Journal of Sisterhood, December 2017
December 2017
From the Desk of the NAASC President Tara Buckner, C’87
As members of the National
Alumnae Association of
Spelman College, we
proudly speak of our alma
mater and our
sisterhood. For the past year,
as your president, as a Board
of Trustees representative,
Spelman donor and parent
of a current student, I have
pondered the meaning of
sisterhood: specifically, the Spelman Sisterhood.
In my student years, I appreciated my sister political
science majors. They were my friends and my
competitors. Individually, we worked to present our
best academic efforts in class, but when studying,
we shared knowledge with each other, somehow
understanding that while the environment was
competitive, we aspired to help each present her
best work. In addition to my academic experience,
I was also blessed to make great friendships – all that
have lasted the test of time - while living on and later
off campus during those four wonderful years.
After graduating from Spelman, I flourished under
the sisterhood of mentorship from alumnae in our
Twin Cities and Detroit chapters. Sisters advised me
in many aspects of my life, from navigating graduate
school, to employment, marriage and raising
children and the importance of giving back. The
wisdom I received cannot be quantified!
The most interesting thing is that while I received, I
also gave back! The most successful relationships
are like that. Moreover, relationships that last are
built on mutual respect. If I were to identify one key
characteristic of a Spelman Woman, it would be her
respect for others. It is, by far, one of the things that
makes us stand out.
As alumnae, we owe it to our legacy to stand as
beacons of academic strength, hard work, kindness
and service. NAASC should both want and strive to
make the world a better place. This requires that we
put in more than we receive as well as shunning
opportunities to dismantle positive work in favor of
unnecessary chaos. We must choose to uplift each
other and show the world that the legacy of
Spelman alumnae is one of brilliance and
kindness. This is what sets the Spelman Sisterhood
apart from all others. As you reflect on this holiday
season, be sure to reflect upon the wonderful gift of
the Spelman experience and living the legacy of
sisterhood, service and success!

Journal of Sisterhood, December 2017
On November 5, 2017, the Huntsville Area Chapter of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College
(HAC-NAASC) hosted its Fall Information Session for prospective students of North Alabama. This year’s session
welcomed almost 30 students and parents to learn more about our esteemed alma mater and enjoy light
refreshments. Spelman’s southeastern recruiter Allyson Smith facilitated the session, fielding questions ranging
from transferable credits to available extracurricular activities. HAC-NAASC members were also kept abreast of
changes made in the admissions process as well as changes in the 2017-2018 tuition and fees. At the program’s
conclusion, chapter members introduced themselves to the students and parents, and spoke with many
afterwards. This event, amongst others, is part of the chapter's ongoing commitment to encouraging young
women to attend our beloved Spelman College!

Jacksonville Chapter (FL)
NAASC Jacksonville will be once again participating in the annual holiday Adopt-A-Family community service
project with Jacksonville Hubbard House, a local nonprofit actively working to support and house women and
their children who have been victims of domestic violence. How it works: Hubbard House asks families who are
currently under their care to create a wish list which is then shared with the giving community. In the past families
have asked for clothes, household items and of course toys. Sibyl Carley, our annual coordinator, will share the
list with the Chapter and if you are able to give, chapter members can bring their item to the meeting on
the December 9th!
Learn more about Hubbard House here: http://www.hubbardhouse.org/services/
South Florida Chapter (FL) Our Holiday Social for students and alumnae will be on December 9, 2017 in Margate, (Broward County), FL. One

spread the word to those you know in South Florida (or may want to come to Miami for these performances) by
encouraging people to apply our promo code (SISTER) before selecting the date and time for their ticket
performance.
On October 7, 2017, the South Florida Chapter attended the FIU Frost Art
Museum's Steven & Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series to hear Dr.

2017 CASA Holiday Gift Drive!
It's time for NJ Spelman's annual holiday gift drive in support of Essex County CASA! Essex County CASA (Court
Appointed Special Advocates) is an independent, court-authorized, nonprofit organization which works through
professionally trained and supervised volunteers to promote the welfare of foster children in Essex County, NJ.
For over a decade our chapter members have generously provided holiday gifts for CASA's children and we are
hoping for strong participation again this year. Each participating member is requested to provide a wrapped
gift for one or more children, each valued at no more than $25. Where possible, the name, age, and gift
suggestion for a specific child will be provided. Gifts will be collected at our next chapter meeting on Sunday,
December 10th. Can't make it to the meeting? You can still participate by providing a gift card.
If you are interested in participating, please e-mail Julie Wilkerson, C'87 at [email protected] for details.

The Northern New Jersey Chapter of NAASC hosted its first annual Reclamation Night on Saturday, October

not involved in the chapter and encourage them to come out to reconnect with their Spelman sisters and join
the chapter. The event was a success and we saw 12 new faces! We are looking forward to a great year!

and enduring importance of HBCUs. Alumni from Spelman, Morehouse, FAMU, Hampton, and Howard, who live
and/or work in the Westchester community, shared their HBCU experiences and insights. The chapter has

Cleveland Chapter (OH) Cleveland Chapter has begun its 2017-2018 calendar year with newly elected chapter officers, reclaimed
alumnae as well as recent graduates from the C'2017. We are encouraged by the enthusiasm and energy that
is brought to our meetings, events and activities.
Our calendar year began with supportive planning and attendance at college fairs. Cleveland met our new
region recruiter from Spelman, Jasmine Jones C'2017. Jasmine's presentation was engaging and filled with
information perspective students wanted to hear as well as their parents.
The chapter participated in Cancer Awareness month activities that celebrated survivors. We look forward to
Stroke Prevention Awareness events/activities that we will assist in bringing forth critical needed health
information. We are also continuing our awareness of healthy habits/obesity & its effects, engaging in physical
activity as well as healthy meal planning.
We are looking forward to our current students returning home as well as reaching out to alumnae for the holidays,
embracing the fellowship across generations. Fundraising is at the forefront of our immediate events. We will
collaborate with two restaurants "eating for scholarship dollars". Stay tuned for more to come. The Cleveland,
