The ancient science of Yoga is a gift to the humanity. It is the ideal way to maintain balance at all levels of existence and a quintessential tool for sustainability in the modern world. I see

Yoga as the ultimate tool that can help us create a better world. It makes every practitioner more empathetic, compassionate, kind and connects them to their own true self. Completely engrossed in Yoga, you can release stress at all levels of existence. This will further lead to surrender which will help you in establishing a deep connection with the higher reality.

My guru and one of the greatest Yoga masters, Shri Yogendraji brought the knowledge of Yoga to householders and committed his life to the service of humanity. Following his footsteps, since last 100 years, The Yoga Institute is passing on the legacy of the yogic knowledge in its true form.

The 100th anniversary of The Yoga Institute

The 100th anniversary is a milestone which in turn acts as a starting point for the upcoming 100 years journey. This historical development is exceptional for our non-profit organization to sustain a century on its own strength to spread the awareness of Yoga. Since ten decades, The Yoga Institute has been standing tall on deep-rooted pillars of integrity, commitment, resourcefulness and simplicity.

The Centenary year of The Yoga Institute is a gift to the world

It is a special year, a milestone that calls for celebration. More than The Yoga Institute, the Centenary year means a lot more to the world as The Yoga Institute is spreading out to reach every corner of the world and is embracing everyone who follows the classical path of Yoga. As The Yoga Institute’s name and teaching is being recognised all over the world, the institute will run with same dedication and enhanced enthusiasm.

The Yoga Institute in 1918

Shri Yogendraji turned down a secure Government job to pursue his life mission to spread Yoga. He enjoyed practising and teaching Yoga on the Versova beach helping many to overcome their health problems. Consequently, on Christmas Day, 25th December 1918, The Yoga Institute was founded at a bungalow at Versova. It became the first organised Yoga centre to offer courses for free to men, women and children of any caste or creed as Shri Yogendraji began sharing the knowledge of Yoga among the common people.

Founder had a great practice of keeping an account of the details of every student which helped to understand them in and out. Since then The Yoga Institute has consistently maintained a record and registration of all students. He had always maintained authenticity and transparency and The Yoga Institute is following his footsteps with integrity.

Transformation of Yoga practice over the last 100 years at The Yoga Institute

Change is inevitable and it is by accepting the changes only we are progressing. Yoga is a way of life and as lifestyle changes, some modifications are appropriately structured to keep up with the modern way of living. Understanding people’s psychology and needs, Yoga practices have been scientifically and creatively simplified without losing its essence. Transforming lives of millions with Yoga, three generations of yogis have been relentlessly working to spread the knowledge of Yoga since 100 years across the globe.

To cater to the areas of suffering, which has started much early, around the age of 30 years, Yoga teaching and practice has also been modified. With the changing times, we have also become more creative to cater to people of this day and age. Yoga is a way of life and works on our overall well being on various aspects like physical, mental, psychosomatic, psychophysical, interpersonal, etc. We have been emphasizing that Yoga doesn’t not comprise of physical culture only, as generally understood. The Yoga Institute has been offering guidelines of how to manage self and keep up one's sanity and balance in today's competitive tension ridden world.

The Yoga practice 100 years from now

Promoting Yoga as precautionary science, The Yoga Institute is taking

responsibility to empower people to take charge of self and health. Sharing the awareness of Holistic Classical Yoga, we will keep teaching various techniques of asanas, pranayamas, kriyas, meditation as well as yogic philosophy to responsible householders. Slightly modified to suit the outwardly lifestyle, we will educate them about basic techniques to be healthy, prevent diseases, keep mind focused, as well as boost concentration and memory. By investing enough of time and efforts in research, we are successful in simplifying all techniques of Yoga which are very effective for today’s and the future ‘busy’ generation.

The Yoga Institute in 2018

Staying true to our roots, The Yoga Institute has been serving mankind by sharing the awareness of Yoga as an applied science where

yoga is taught from womb to tomb. Functioning as a ‘Life School’ where people from all age groups learn to live,

we have introduced new courses, workshops and camps that focus on targeting specific needs and diseases. Though it was taught indirectly at The Yoga Institute earlier, now we have also introduced ancient medical science of Ayurveda more specifically as a

course. 2018 has been a momentous year too with significant events dotted throughout the year as well as

local and global launches of our branches. The Yoga Institute was also honored with the Prime Minister’s Award

for Outstanding Contribution to Promotion and Development of Yoga in 2018.

The Yoga Institute vision for 2118

My wish is to see more and more people coming into the practice of Yoga. A lot is happening in this 21st century that is taking us away from nature, from each other and even from our true self. The need of the hour is to connect, integrate and understand that we all are one.

Commemorating the inspiring yogic movement, The Yoga Institute will be empowering all humans to take action by maintaining enough yoga practice for daily self-care, stress reduction, mental clarity, and overall health, then getting off the mat and serving society directly.

In the upcoming centenary, The Yoga Institute Yoga teaching will certainly be widely accepted and revered by people because it is simplified, practical and user-friendly. Thousands of branches will open all over the world to reach out to millions with yoga.

Our purpose has always been and will be to see humans become a better version of themselves and being useful to the society and the nation.

Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra

Director, The Yoga Institute.

FROM THE TEACHER’S DIARY

Mr. Neriosang Desai

YOGASATTVA 06

Everyone around us believe that ours is a

match made in Yoga heaven which

spells boundless love, dedication and

selfless service to help in transforming millions of

lives. Together we have dedicated 51 years of life,

hard work and time to The Yoga Institute and its

mission and vision of spreading yoga goodness to

all.

My wife, Mrs. Armaiti Desai, is fondly known as

Mrs. D around the Institute campus. She is a

motherly figure, caring and empathetic soul who is always ready to lead a

helping hand to all those in need. By profession, she was a trained nurse

who worked selflessly for the Holy Spirit Hospital for five years. She

recollects how her journey started many decades ago with special classes

she used to attend and learnt everything thing about yoga from Mother

Sita. She was in awe of Dr. Jayadeva and Founder Shri Yogendraji who

worked untiringly to spread yoga goodness to all.

Eventually, together we joined the yoga teacher training course. After

which Armaiti joined the reputed school Avabai Petit where she taught

Institute yoga for a decade. Also, she was teaching yoga in SNDT for five

years. Sheer admiration and respect for the founder is reflected in her

words. She worked closely as his personal typist, office correspondent,

press agent, article writer, editorial team, support staff …phew list is

endless and not to mention “n” number of errands each day assigned to

her to make the Institute what it is today. The progression of the Institute

from a small classroom where few students came in to present thousands

of students who attend today was all because of their hard work and

sincerity. Of course in all modesty, she takes no credits, saying Founder,

and Dr. Jayadeva did all the work. She narrates “I loved this place.

Yogendras were a huge part of my family. Shri Yogendra Ji, Mother Sita Ji

and Dr. Jayadeva Ji were true yogis who practised what they preached.

Every day they were following all the Yamas and Niyamas, never swaying

and flinching from the path of honesty and Ashtanga Yoga.”

I also recollect that Dr. Jayadeva had said once that I could contribute

something to The Yoga Institute and not just come for the lectures; as I

used to attend all the Parismvads with my wife. We were regular visitors to

the Institute. Since I was a design Engineer at Siemens by profession, I

conceived of an idea to make Yoga more

attractive to children by making games which

would demonstrate the concepts of Yoga in an

innovative and joyful way, I also realized that

proper training occurs when the Aklishta Vrittis

are at the basis of good learning and the games

provided this. Through my experience at Siemens,

I had contact with one supplier who agreed to

make the moulded parts in plastics for the games.

I had worked closely with Dr. Jayadeva for so

many years, and we also developed the concepts

of Samkhya Yoga of the bhavas, which Dr. Jayadeva so beautifully

exemplified in his life and introduced as attitude training for all. The

concept of dharma with its ingredient of a duty sense, discipline, self-

direction, the Yamas and the Niyamas and conditioning were shown as

they played the faith game. As they played, they knew they had to follow

the rules which are part of dharma. They did their duty with

concentration which is included in the Jnana bhava. They used their

senses and a sense of sharing and cooperation. Then one of them made a

little mistake, but they accepted it in a karma yoga spirit with an attitude

of Vairagya, but then went on to make the word and exclaimed with joy

at the sense of achievement Aishvarya Bhava was the outcome. One of

the teachers in the feedback exclaimed, “This is how Yoga should be

taught to children.”

Today even after more than five decades, these games are used as

instructional tools for all the concepts like Yamas and Niyamas, one-

pointedness, confidence and in making better humans.

The Yoga Institute with its rich history of yogic teaching has changed

lives and is making better humans.

Q.) What are the classic symptoms of asthma?

A.) The most common symptoms of asthma are breathlessness or

dyspnea, cough, and tightness in the chest.

Q.) Is there a specific test which can be done to establish that the disease is asthma?

A.) Yes, pulmonary function test would conclusively prove the diagnosis one way or another.

Q.) What are corticosteroids? When do you use them?

A.) Corticosteroids are life saving drugs which are useful in asthma because of their anti-inflammatory effect. They control chronic asthma and are helpful in acute attacks. To reduce constriction of the airways, bronchodilators such as theophylline’s and beta- adrenergic like salbutamol terbutaline are used. These are administered with inhalers.

Q.) Are there any side effects of asthma drugs and

corticosteroids?

A.) Steroids have many side effects on prolonged use. Firstly they generate a feeling of well-being, and the patient is in danger of becoming habituated. They cause fluid retention which leads to swelling all over. Hypertension and diabetes may follow. They remove calcium from the bones which leads to osteoporosis which in turn leaves the patient prone to fractures. However, it must be remembered that in certain cases the steroids are required.

Q.) What are your views on inhalation therapy for asthmatics?

A.) Inhalation therapy is very effective for treatment of mild attacks and to prevent severe attacks. The advantage is that the drug gets directly deposited on the airway of the bronchi where it has to act. A smaller

dose is thus sufficient, and fewer side effects consequently ensue. The problem is that patients tend to misuse the facility and might self-medicate beyond safe limits.

Q.) At The various camps at The Yoga Institute which you helped in so graciously what was your impression of the patients that you examined?

A.) I encountered various types of patients, where asthma ranged from mind to severe. Most were not much aware of appropriate treatment; a majority suffered anxiety about the illness. All were keen to learn how it could be controlled.

YogaMD

YOGASATTVA 07

Dr. A.A. Mahashur MBBS, MD (Chest Diseases

and Tuberculosis)

Q.) Could you tell us scientifically if the patients get any respite from the yogic procedures?

A.) Mild to moderate asthmatics were able to get over the illness with yogic practices. Those with severe asthma reduced their requirement of drugs. The severity also reduced, and they found that they could cope with attacks batter. The lung function test showed significant improvement after six months of regular yogic practices.

Q.) Is the physical therapy of postures and breathing recommended by you? What do you usually recommend in the breathing practices?

A.) In all respiratory diseases, respiratory secretions increase and cause further obstruction due to the blocking of airways. The patient undergoing attack may be unable to get rid of them himself. Postural drainage is useful and important here. Pranayama is highly recommended.

Q.) Do you feel that stress-reducing techniques help asthmatics? What do you usually recommend?

A.) Yes, Stress is one of the very major factors in setting off an attack or in worsening an already existing one. Fear of an impending attack could cause stress. A patient under stress finds it hard to cope. Stress relief helps to avoid an attack. Stress relief forms a major part in the treatment of asthma. I would recommend Yogic practices and relaxation techniques of Nispandabhava and Shavasana.

Name: Geeta Arora

Age: 54 years old

Qualifications: TTC (The Yoga Institute); Diploma in Yoga (Mumbai University)

Profession: Yoga teacher and therapist

Health Issues: Cervical Pain and High Blood Pressure

Q: How did you learn about The Yoga Institute?

A: Started my Yoga Journey in 2005 with The Yoga Institute. The homely atmosphere helped me to calm my nerves. The personal care received from the Institute’s yoga teachers helped me recover.

Q: State your present responsibilities and ailment

A: I am 54 years old with normal family responsibilities and teaching yoga to my students. My prime responsibility is to work towards my husband’s and my health, so we both do all the asanas and pranayama and some traditional techniques that I learnt from The Yoga Institute, every morning.

Q: Family history of any other disease, please share the particulars?

A: High Blood Pressure. I have learnt from The Yoga Sutras that whatever is in the family history relating to any disease, we need to discipline ourselves and break our old habit and patterns. Recommend Yogendra Pranayamas 1 to 9 and doing it religiously every day.

Q: How have you benefitted from Yoga and The Yoga Institute (TYI)?

A: I was in agony with a stiff neck, pain that was not bearable and dealing with high BP. Finally, The Yoga Institutes’ 21 Days programme changed my life. Yoga at the Institute was all about self-care, and it was a transformative experience for me. It changed the way I dealt with stress and changed everyday routines. Gentle yoga was practised daily-through poses, known as asanas, with simple breathing techniques and very helpful relaxation practices.

It significantly reduced my fatigue, stress and depression symptoms. It helped me to develop strength and flexibility and promoted relaxation.

Sleep disturbances were reduced, and peaceful and meditative yoga practices helped my body to heal and relax. I was energetic and went on to finish my seven months yoga teacher training course and completed my diploma in yoga.

I started helping my husband who had a kidney problem, and now he does yoga every day. Later I started helping my yoga students.

Institute teachers were very supportive and helpful. I recommend the seven days camp of The Yoga Institute to all and even the hospitalised people with health problems who approach me for help. Yoga is restorative in many conditions other than high blood pressure, PCOS, fatigue, Sciatica, arthritis, blood pressure, headaches, migraines, etc. conditions.

Today, I am healthy and happy and cervical pain-free. You can also benefit from the marvellous Institutes’ techniques which are very effective. Do check out their upcoming festivities. My best wishes for their centennial celebrations.

My heartiest congratulations for completing 100 years.

It’s such a wonderful feeling this evening to know that this Institute jahaan humne hamaara bachpan dekha, is now completing 100 years. Trust me, as our beloved prime Minister talks about – Yoga is one subject that needs proper attention. The youth of the country needs to understand the power of Yoga. We should all come together, make them understand and realise - yes it’s the most important component of human life. Get into it before it’s too late. Hats off to the Institute once again. oga looks like a challenge, it is so different. One has to have a Yvery serious motivation to take up a subject like this and then to pursue it because basically yoga is a discipline. Whether it is in

sitting, whether it is in diet, whether it is in some kind of a code of life whether it is in thinking, it definitely wants us to act in a certain way. And since we are all deeply rooted in our old ways, it is not easy to make a change. At every step there is a challenge.

In our old literature they tell this, that a spiritual path is for the strongest. There is a lot of meaning in that because the weak persons want easy things. They want things that can immediately please them. But this is not the way of yoga. Yoga is trying to control and overcome some of our own, old tendencies. It’s our tendency to react fast if someone provokes us, immediately getting angry and hitting back. Or to see something good and want to have it or possess it, this is the usual tendency. To work against these tendencies, it just doesn’t convince us, “why should I do that?” , “why should I not eat what I like?”, “Why should I not do what I think i should do?”

Even a posture becomes an inconvenience because it causes a little discomfort, a little pain. To sit in an artificial posture causes discomfort. It definitely is a challenge. But we can meet the challenge to the extent that we are motivated. If we recognize that a physical discipline would have an effect on the mind and would cause certain mental control, if we believe in all that, then there is sense in sitting in a certain way.

The same things are at other levels. The tendency to react; no doubt if we react against a provocation, we feel as if we have relieved off a tension. But when we react, we get angry, we sometimes act too fast, too quick, without understanding. Later on, it may happen that we feel sad also, “why did I get angry?” The whole process causes an unbalancing of the mind. In a way, this is the worst thing that could happen to us, to lose our own balance, lose our own peace and act in some way which later on we would regret. That is why yoga would insist that we should control our behavior, control our reactions. Otherwise, we get into the vicious circle of getting angry and responding and there is no end to the whole thing.

In other areas too, the mind likes to just wander, doesn’t like to remain fixed. We enjoy this. We want to think that we are free and we do what we like, but in doing that, very often we are not able to attend to something for very long. When we don't attend to thing for very long. When we don’t attend to things for long, then we don’t really understand things. Most of our thinking is based on very cursory kind of observations. No doubt these observations do help as we are carrying on like this in life.

So each step in yoga becomes a challenge, becomes a certain effort. Yoga is not something which one can carry on while maintaining one’s own nature and old ways. There is no justification then to take to yoga. If you want to live as you like and do whatever you think is right, if you want to be carried away by all your earlier desires and tendencies, what is the need of yoga for you? The fact that you have decided to take to yoga would mean that you have already put in an effort, that you have worked on certain tendencies, some work has been done. Not only with yoga but this is true of any activity. If you decide in any activity, you have to definitely discipline yourself and make some changes. You can’t just sleep the whole day still want to achieve something in life.

In yoga, the goals are much higher than the ordinary kind of goals. The ordinary goals may not need much effort; a little effort is enough. But here the objective is to completely control oneself, to overcome one’s own nature, to establish oneself in a better state of mind, a better understanding of life, to realize oneself. All these things are harder than the very ordinary kind of interest one holds. To eat, drink and be merry is easier than understanding oneself and overcoming one’s own nature. To establish oneself in a better state would mean more work. Yoga is interested in this. The discipline that it insists correspondingly puts us into a much superior state of mind. So the discipline in that sense is very welcome. You see, becoming a person who maintains very clear headed thinking and has a balanced state of mind, I think, would be a very worthwhile objective in comparison to a person who is highly distracted, very confused and does things impulsively.

TESTIMONIALS

About 4 months ago, I faced nearly 25 days or more of sleepless nights at a stretch due to anxiety. I prayed at several temples, felt suffocated, the thought of medication and going for psychiatric counselling was scary. I thought of Hansaji and I immediately requested to meet her. When I entered Hansaji's room there was a strong aura of clean positive energy. She spoke to me gently and lovingly. Just sharing my symptoms and fears with her made me feel lighter. I thought Hansaji would tell me to do Yoga to overcome anxiety bu t i n s t e ad she sha r ed some Panchatantra stories. At the end of many such entertaining stories and the interesting chitchat with Hansaji, she told me to visit her once a week till I felt fine. She also gave me some simple homework mostly for the mind. At sun set I walked out of Her room feeling almost healed. I’m really grateful to The Yoga Institute and Hansaji. “

It has been a pleasant experience with The Yoga Institute. In 2016 Indian Bank collaborated with The Yoga Institute to celebrate International Day of Yoga. Being a banker and having a busy schedule from morning to night, Yoga has helped me to manage my day with ease and be fit. The teacher has taught some effective asanas which I can perform at my work desk. Yogic kriyas teaches Yoga as a way of life. According to me everyone must do Yoga.

My association with the institute is since year 1998. I started coming regularly in morning asana class since 2004. I regularly attended TYI since then. Taking a morning walk at the institute, attending Parisamvad & then doing asana for 45 min was my routine for 10 years. I did my teachers training in 2014. Life has seen lot of ups & down but learnings from the Institute has kept steadfast in all anomalies of life. I’m indebted to my Guru Dr Saab & Hansaji who have always been a guiding light in my life. Currently I'm teaching at the Institute, honorary. Learning from TYI is - how to press pause & reflect on what I’m grateful for.

The philosophy, techniques and practical tips along with attitude training imparted by TYI during that 4 hour session of Karma Yoga Workshop had a profound impact on me personally and on my business. It helped me envision a higher purpose of doing business and gaining better clarity of thoughts. The fear and the inhibitions had been replaced by faith. I have travelled more for research and execution in past 4 months that I have done in past many years. Our brand which was written off by competitors and various stakeholders in April 2018 is now being praised to be one of the most reputed brands in the country. I can now find out time for things I love to do and at the same time I have the realisation of my duty and I strive to do it with dedication and devotion.

I am proud to say that I belong to this wonderful temple of knowledge, The Yoga Institute. I did One Month Teachers’ Training Course and then One Year Teacher's Training Course several years ago. I had always wished to be the part of this wonderful Institution. This Institute is nothing less than I hoped. It has taught me the things beyond just knowledge and helped me to broaden my horizon to live a meaningful life that I love. The classes are very interactive, faculties ensure that every student understands what is being taught before proceeding. For me, life at The Yoga Institute has been breathtaking and enriching. It not only helped in learning the TRUE Yoga but also in developing my overall personality, fuelling confidence. My sincere thanks to all the teachers, Mother, Doctor Saab, Smt. Hansaji, Nani Ji, Shri Hrishi Ji and Smt. Pranee Ji, they had played a crucial role in shaping me. Thank You, The Yoga Institute for making this journey so pleasant.

Why Yoga? I have to say that before coming here I thought that yoga was just doing Asanas, and for example, my parents thought that it was just a hippie activity. In European countries we have a misconception of the Yoga term and we are also not very open to understand Yoga in a broader way. Over there, it is difficult to find real Gurus and proper knowledgeable people. Here, the 3 MTTC is being a very intensive experience, full of theory and practice but also fun. This course requires all your senses, energy, concentration, and open-mindedness but once you bring all these with you, half of the learning process is acquired. During this time, I also participated as a volunteer in a kids’ workshop, which gave me an idea about how Yoga could be presented to different groups. Once my 3 MTTC is finished, I’ve decided to take all the experiences that The Yoga Institute is awakening in me. Hopefully, this can make a change in the misconception of what Yoga is in some European countries.
