HAPPY NEW YEAR

Kilsby Kronickle

Welcome to the Christmas and New Year edition of Kronickle which brings news

of a variety of events over the festive period and into the New Year. The first of

these is the annual Christmas Tree event (see page 10 for details) at which Millie

Avery will help Father Christmas switch on the Christmas Tree lights.

Congratulations to Millie for winning the drawing competition with her lovely

picture of a tree.

It is good to see from the Parish Council report that we now have a full

complement of councillors again, and that volunteers have come forward for the

Speedwatch and Recreation Ground jobs. We also have a new Chairman of the

Council and we wish Jenny every success in the role.

As ever, the report from Kilsby School details a whole variety of fascinating

activities the children have undertaken in the last couple of months. It is good to

see that they were involved in the events in the village to mark the 100th

anniversary of the Armistice, placing hand painted ’poppy stones’ along the edge

of the church path.

On page 16 are details of the waste and recycling arrangements for the Christmas

and New Year period, including an extra recycling collection in early January,

and there is information about Oil Club orders on page 6.

Finally, we are experimenting this time with some colour pages in the magazine

to match the festive mood. We hope you like them - let us know what you think.

We hope you all have a very happy Christmas and a happy healthy and peaceful

2019.

KILSBY PARISH COUNCIL (From Councillor Bob Gent, Tel: 823528 and Clare Valentine, Clerk to the Parish Council, [email protected] Tel:07581 490581)

PLAYTIME Mondays 9.45 – 11.45 am (N’hants term-time)

(From Victoria Devaney, Tel: 07544 929501)

Kilsby Playtime is a parent and toddler group for

parents and carers of babies and children up to

school age. There are toys, books and jigsaws,

craft activities and a baby area for the little ones.

Everyone is welcome and there is always a cup of

tea or coffee with a biscuit!

We’ve been delighted to welcome some new babies

and children to our group this term. Christmas is

fast approaching and we’ll be doing some

Christmas crafts over the new few weeks and are

looking forward to our Christmas party on our last

session before the holidays.

Kilsby Playtime plays a vital role in providing local parents and carers with somewhere to take their children and babies once a week for a play and to have some adult company too. We are run by volunteers and charge £2 per family to attend. However, with increasing hall hire costs and expenses, including the necessary insurance, we need to make sure we are well-attended in order to cover costs. So invite your friends and relatives and remember to mention us to new parents in the area! (Eds: See also advertisement on page 14.)

Welcome all to this festive edition of the Kilsby Kronickle from all of us at the Parish Council. Christmas is nearly upon us and the weather has at last turned seasonably cold. The last couple of months have been a very busy period for us on the Parish Council and we have brought a number of new faces not only to the council but also our associated teams. Firstly, we have a new ‘chairman’, Jenny Fisher. Jenny has been a councillor since 2015, with her main accomplishment to date being involvement in the implementation of Kilsby’s Neighbourhood Development Plan. She has very recently retired from paid employment so will have more time to give to the chairman role. On the Parish Council we are all very excited to have Jenny’s guidance and leadership going into 2019 and wish her all every success in this new position. Secondly, I am sure you would all like to join me in congratulating our new parish counsellor Robin Nicholls on his appointment and wishing him a warm welcome to the team. Robin will be joining us for his first meeting in December and I know we are all looking forward to having him on the Parish Council. We have also appointed Debbie Marsh as Community Speedwatch coordinator for the village. She will be recruiting and leading several Speedwatch volunteers in the task of keeping our village safe. If you are interested in volunteering as a Speedwatch volunteer, please contact Debbie on [email protected] Debbie has created a poster with further information about Speedwatch and the volunteer role. The village shop can provide this information and the posters will also be displayed in strategic positions around the village. Speeding is a very important issue to us in the Parish and I am sure that, as a village, we will all support Debbie wherever possible. A further volunteer is Cressida Woodcock–Sweales. Cressida has kindly volunteered to be Secretary/Treasurer to the Recreation Ground and I hope you will join me in wishing her every success in this vital role. In other news, it has been reported to us that HGV’s and car transporters have been using the village as a shortcut and driving at dangerous speeds. Please be wary and keep your families safe this festive season. If you see these drivers please note the vehicle registration and/or company logo, and report them to the Parish Council.

Thank you to everyone who supported us in defending the parish in our ownership of part of the land used by DIRFT. This was land which Crick had asked Daventry District Council (DDC) to transfer to them as part of a Community Governance Review (a standard periodic review of councils) DDC is undertaking. The deadline for comments has now passed. We will update you via the website and Facebook when we hear anything further. The Parish Council would like to take this opportunity

to thank all residents for their support throughout

2018 and wish you and your families a very Merry

Christmas, Happy New Year and a prosperous 2019.

FROM DISTRICT COUNCILLOR CATHERINE LOMAX (Tel: 890939, 24 Castle Mound, Barby, CV23 8TN, [email protected])

Unitary Authorities The deadline for the Government’s decision about setting up two unitary councils to replace Northamptonshire County Council has passed, with no word. As the Government is bogged down in Brexit this is not surprising. Of course, the ‘decision’ is almost a foregone conclusion, as the Government made it very clear, whatever local opinion is, that that is what it wished to happen. So much for democracy, and so 2020 will see the end of Daventry District Council after 44 years of existence. Daventry District Council is seeking suggestions for a name for the new council, which will incorporate Northampton Borough and South Northants District. Inspiring suggestions thus far include West Northamptonshire Council, Grand Union Council, and Greater Northampton Council. You have until 5 December to think up a new name, and, surprise, surprise, it is the Government which will decide on the new name. We do not yet know how the County Council’s deficit is going to be dealt with, whether it will simply be passed on to the new unitary councils, written off, or, most unlikely, found by government. Dog Control Orders DDC’s new Dog Control Orders come into force on 1 December. Dogs will be banned from fenced play areas, where smoking will also be prohibited. Dogs must be kept on leads in the vicinity of schools in

term time, and also in cemeteries. No more than six dogs can be exercised together by one person, (which is the recommended maximum accepted by breeders etc.). Grants for Community Fundraising Events Grants of up to £500 are being offered by DDC for community fundraising events taking place before 31.3.19. Already 25 groups have benefitted this year from this scheme. Other capital grants totalling £188,000 have recently been awarded to voluntary and community groups in the district, and a further £140,000 remains to be allocated. Potholes on our roads Potholes are the bane of our lives. The numbers have reached epidemic proportions. The good news in the recent budget was an extra £420 million for their repair. It is reported that there are an estimated 2,000,000 potholes on England’s roads, so the money may not go all that far. The road repair industry estimates that 1.53 million potholes were repaired in 2017, at a cost of £96.9 million, but each year from 2015 has seen a decline in the number repaired. As this is the last KK of the year, I wish you all a wonderful Christmas.

KILSBY VILLAGE HALL (From Julie Bunyan, Secretary, Tel: 823707) The Village Hall continues to be very busy and we are pleased to welcome several new groups. Yoga/Meditation, Baby Music, Baby Massage and Urban Bootcamp are now available with regular sessions during the week. Zumba classes will start in January 2019. The film nights continue to be popular and well supported and we intend to show films at least 4 times a year. During the year we have benefited from raising funds from the Open Gardens, film nights and various grants which have provided additional funds to improve the hall. Many thanks for the support from the residents and groups who have helped us during the course of the year. If anyone is interested in joining the committee or help occasionally with projects or events you would be very welcome. Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year to everyone and we hope to see you at the hall in the New Year. See What’s On at www.kilsbyvillagehall.co.uk (The next Film Night will be on 16th March. See the next Kronickle for details.)

THANK YOU (From Nancy Golding, Tel: 822611)

I wish to express my sincere thanks to all those kind people in the village who sent cards and messages following the unexpected death of my dear husband, Tony. The kind words and offers of support at such a difficult time have been a great comfort and are very much appreciated by both myself and my family. The collection following the funeral raised £500 for the RBL Poppy Appeal which will be gratefully received when the fund is sent to Poppy Appeal headquarters. Nancy Golding

Kilsby War Memorial (From Nancy Golding, Tel: 822611) The work of restoration to the War Memorial was completed in time for the Remembrance Service on 11th November, the 100 year anniversary of the Armistice. This was a project which the late Tony Golding had started and he would have been pleased to know that it had been finished. Thank you to all those who gave donations and made it possible. Special thanks to Moira Morriss Memorials for the stonework and to Steve Hartwell for the landscaping.

In addition to the restored memorial the centenary of the Armistice was marked in Kilsby churchyard by a Poppy Trail created by the W.I. (see page 15 and picture below) and by stones painted by the children of Kilsby School with poppies, which were placed along the path (see page 17).

The Jubilee Plantation (From Janet Chappell - Clerk & Trustee Kilsby Poors Land Charity) The Jubilee Plantation is an area of woodland of approximately 6.5 acres owned by Kilsby Poors Land Charity. It is situated within the Parish between the A5 and the southern side of the Rugby to Northampton railway, providing the village with a partial shield from DIRFT. It was planted in 2002 under a Forestry Commission scheme to create woodland in perpetuity and it is managed by Bob Wilson on behalf of the Charity. As a valuable local green space it has always been the intention to encourage community access to it once the trees had matured and this stage has now been reached. With the benefit of an award this year of £500 from Grantscape it has been possible to fund a pedestrian gate for ease of access for walkers. Despite its proximity to road and rail routes the wood is a pleasantly tranquil spot and quite a haven for wildlife. So, do come and explore it for yourselves. For the sake of the wildlife it would be preferable to keep the area dog free but if dogs are walked there please keep them on leads at all times. As a follow up project, when finances permit, it is hoped to erect an information board describing the flora and fauna of the site. For further details contact Bob Wilson (07766

704683) or Janet Chappell (01788 822764).

gate.

DO YOU REMEMBER? Help needed with Family History (From Tracy Dale, Tel: 575184)

I am currently working on my family history and I am seeking information on my great grandfather, Henry “Harry” Dale and would be grateful if anyone who has any information, anecdotes or photos could get in touch with me. I believe he lived in Kilsby from 1946 until 1953 and I think he lived in Acacia, Vine and Mansfield Cottages – although in one of the Rugby Registers it also gives his address as “The Bungalow”. I think that he ran the off licence for just one year in 1952/3 and he also worked as the village postman. He was a football referee and also I believe the secretary of the Kilsby Football Club in the late 1940’s. I have also been told that he used to chauffeur Frank Whittle and that when Frank didn’t need the car he would let him take the children (Fay, Howard and Henry) to the sea and I would particularly like to know if anyone has any more information on this. I would be grateful for any information that anyone has and can be contacted on Rugby 575184.

DAVENTRY CALLING (From Terry Dougan, Tel: 822650) Thanks to everyone who contacted me to say that they had not received the September edition of Daventry Calling. The information you provided was fed back to the District Council and to the distribution company and we have been assured that steps have been taken to try to ensure everyone household in the village receives its copy in the future. The next edition of Daventry Calling is due to be distributed to all homes in Kilsby between 3rd and 17th December. If you have not received your copy by 17th December could you please contact the District Council - Becky Hutson and her team at [email protected] - to let them know..

Help needed in our Shop

(From the Editors) The report on page 14 makes good reading. Our community shop is thriving. But there is a real and urgent need for more volunteers to come forward to help out in the shop, not least to cover absences because of holidays and sickness. If you could spare a few hours on a regular basis or be prepared to come in when cover is needed then Andrea would be delighted to hear from you on 07861 295358. Please help if you can.

Kilsby Poppy Collection 2018 (From Sue Dobson, Tel: 822523) A very big thank you to all those who rose to the occasion and went out and collected this year and those who gave so generously. We made a grand total of £1,104.50. This was a fantastic tribute to Tony Golding who did so much ground work in previous years. Apologies to those who volunteered to collect but were not contacted. This was because paperwork was not forthcoming. If you were one of those and are still interested in helping out with collection next year then do give me a ring. Also we need an organiser for the collection for next year. If this good cause interests you please ring Sue Dobson on 01788 822523. Thank you all once again.

1st Kilsby Guides (From Joanna Carpenter, Tel: 07985 797539) Kilsby 1st Guides have enjoyed a busy autumn so far! The girls have been working towards their healthy lifestyle badges and for this have enjoyed a talk by a dietician, sampled fruits from around the world and made their own smoothies! We've also tried our hands at pumpkin carving and printing our own Christmas wrapping paper. We were lucky enough to have a visit from a representative from The Body Shop. The girls enjoyed sampling lots of the products and each receiving a foot massage!

Work continues on our community mosaic and the 4 seasons design is nearing completion! It will be coming to decorate a village shop near you very soon! Thank you to all those villagers who have donated materials, time and expertise to help us create a wonderful piece of artwork.

Kilsby Village Shop (From Trish Brown, on behalf of the Kilsby Village Shop Management Committee)

It’s been a busy couple of months with Halloween

- the selling of our pumpkins proved a success with the addition of our Halloween goody bags - and the start of our Christmas stock arriving into the shop. We also made our first home shop delivery so if you do need our help and cannot get to the shop, please contact Andrea, our Shop Manager, who will be happy to help. Her number is 07861295358. You may have also noticed that we have added an additional central display area in the shop, following our successful grant application from the Community Fund for Kilsby administered by GrantScape, and we will also shortly be installing a new automatic door to the shop which we hope will benefit all of our customers. We are sad to say goodbye to Janet and Kevin Heathcote who are leaving the village. They have given a lot of help and support to the shop, Janet being a key member of the Shop Committee and a volunteer in the shop and Kevin giving his time on the new display cabinet, storage box and lots more. So, on behalf of the Shop Committee and our Shop Manager, Andrea, we wish them all the very best for the future.

Christmas is coming....

As you start your Christmas preparations please pop into the village shop to see our fantastic Christmas range and remember we will be taking orders for roast beef, venison, pork and all the trimmings to make your Christmas celebration one to remember. We have a wonderful range of wines, spirits and prosecco to add that extra bit of sparkle, as well as a new range of non-alcoholic wines and beers. We are now also stocking logs, kindling and firelighters as the weather starts to get colder. Following a very kind donation from Coles Christmas Trees (‘thank you’), we now have our very first Christmas Tree which makes it very Christmassy and really does looks amazing. On behalf of your Village Shop Committee and your Shop Manager, Andrea, we would like to give special thanks to all our volunteers who work in the shop as without your dedication and support over the last nine months the success of the shop would not have been possible. Finally, we would like to thank each and every one of our customers for your continued support of the Shop and we hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year. We look forward to your continued support and to seeing you

in the shop in 2019.

KILSBY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE (From Nancy Golding, Tel: 822611) Our AGM was held in October when we were pleased to re-elect our President, Sue Dobson, together with Karen Gilmurray as Secretary and Nancy Golding as Treasurer. After the annual reports and accounts were presented, members were able to enjoy social time with cheese and wine refreshments. On 26th September some of our members had an excellent day out when they visited the Triforium Exhibition in Westminster Abbey and were also able to explore other interesting aspects of the Abbey.

We hosted a Group Meeting of WIs from Yelvertoft, Welton, Barby and Braunston when Brother John gave us a talk about the Lord Leycester Hospital in Warwick. This is an ancient medieval building which originally provided a retirement home for warriors in the Elizabethan age and is now home to 8 retired military service personnel. Other activities have been a talk given at Holy Cross Church Daventry called 'An Audience with Queen

Elizabeth 1, a visit to Derngate Theatre to see 'Kinky Boots', and also to Milton Keynes Theatre to enjoy a comedy, 'Bank Robbery'. We have also had a Gelli Pad Painting craft event which was good fun. At our meeting in November Dr. Gillian White gave us a fascinating talk on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. Our Skittles team are back practising regularly and the Canasta group continue to play fortnightly. We were very pleased that Sue Dobson came second in the Federation Scrabble competition. As part of the remembrance of those men from Kilsby who lost their lives in the 1st World War, the Kilsby WI laid a trail of poppies to show the grave of Alfred Perry in the churchyard. (Eds. Extra recycling collection

Your blue-lidded recycling bin will continue to be collected as usual over Christmas and New Year, with the addition of an extra collection for all households in the week beginning 7 January. Please put your recycling bin out on your usual collection day alongside any other bins that are scheduled. Please note that this extra collection is not listed on the paper calendar you received in June. Extra recycling that you cannot fit it in your blue-lidded bin should be placed into clear or white bags (not green or black) and placed next to your bin. Don’t forget that sweet tins, and foil-free wrapping paper and Christmas cards can be recycled. General waste Black bins containing general waste will continue to be collected as normal on their three-weekly cycle. Please recycle as much as possible as side waste and bins with raised lids will not be collected.

Food waste Food waste bins will continue to be collected on their usual weekly schedule. Please remember you can recycle leftover raw and cooked foods, including veg peelings, egg shells, out-of-date food, plate scrapings, solid fats, meat and fish bones. Please do not put any liquids in the caddy. Garden waste collections Those subscribed to the service will continue to receive collections on their usual schedule in the run up to Christmas and New Year. Please note there will be a short break in collections during the second week of January so that crews can focus on the extra seasonal recycling. Christmas trees Households subscribed to the garden waste service can put their real Christmas trees in their garden waste bin or alternatively place them alongside the bin for collection in the week beginning 22 January. There are no communal collection points for real Christmas trees, but you can take trees to your local household waste recycling centre. Find your nearest centre at www.daventrydc.gov.uk/recycling Keep up-to-date with our mobile app You can check your collection day and set up notifications to remind your which bins to put out using our mobile app. Available for free from Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store, the app can also be used to access the latest news from Daventry District Council, as well as information about local facilities, services, shops, bars and restaurants.

News from Kilsby School (From Karen Burton [email protected]) We have had a very busy time at Kilsby School since the last edition of the Kronickle. On Friday 5th Oc tober we walked round to St Faith's church for our Harvest service with Rev Nigel Fry. All four classes participated in the service. The children in Maple class concentrated on 'Poverty in the UK', Rowan class spoke of 'Harvest all around the world', the children in Cherry class read 'Harvest poems' and the Reception children in Chestnut class expressed their own 'Thank you's for our food'. The newly elected House Captains also read some prayers.

The Harvest gift boxes the children brought into school were beautifully decorated and were filled with lots of goodies. After the service these were distributed to t h e e l d e r l y residents of Kilsby.

(Do please let us know if you know anyone we missed out this year, so they may be included in 2019.) After the service we held a MacMillan coffee morning back in the school hall with coffee and some delicious looking cakes! This raised a grand total of £165.61 for the charity which is brilliant. O n F r i d a y 9 t h November all the children and staff walked round to St Faith's church where they met with the Rev Nigel Fry to pay their respects (in advance) for Remembrance Day. During the week before, each child had painted a red poppy on a stone they had brought into school and had it varnished.

Rev Nigel showed them the newly refurbished War Memorial in the churchyard and then the children laid their stones along the side of the church path, in remembrance of all those who died during the wars, and also to mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of WW1. We have 96 children and four teachers in school so we had exactly 100 poppy stones. If you have time you might like to take a look at the stones on the path up to the church.

After the stones were laid, the children went into church where they said a prayer with the Rev Nigel. Rory and May recited the famous war poem, 'Flanders Fields', then Rev Nigel read out the names of every single soldier from Kilsby, who lost his life, and afterwards, 'The Last Post' was sounded. We held a minute’s silence in respect for all those who lost their lives fighting for us. In addition to painting poppies on the stones, the children (helped by Miss Smith) created a beautiful piece of artwork to commemorate the end of WW1, which is now on display in our school hall.

On the afternoon of Tuesday 13th November, the children in Rowan class visited the Forest Hermitage Monastery at Fulbrook, near Warwick. This is part of our curriculum – understanding other faiths.

They learnt all a b o u t t h e teachings of Buddhism and had a guided tour around the monastery. We did not have to pay for the trip in money (apart from for the

coach). Instead, each child was asked to donate an item of vegetarian or vegan food as a gift for the monks as they rely heavily on the generosity of others. It was a very interesting visit and the children learnt a lot about Buddhism and how the monks spend a lot of their time in meditation. The children all behaved extremely well and displayed the utmost respect whilst inside the temple.

(News from Kilsby School, continued)

On Wednesday 14th November, the children in Cherry class were excited to have a paramedic come into school to see them, bringing his ambulance with him. He took them outside to show them the equipment he carries inside the ambulance, and told them all about what he used the different items for they even got to hear the siren, which was very loud! He checked their oxygen levels and their heart rates. They were very interested to find out all about his job and what he does to help people.

On Friday 16th November children came to school dressed in something spotty and brought a donation for Children in Need. We raised a grand total of £166.22 with a generous £250 cheque from Wilton Marina which brought the total up to £416.22. The lucky children in Reception spent the day at Santa's Winter Wonderland at Tamworth Snowdome on Monday 19th November. There, they played in the snow on snow slides, snow tubes and on sledges too, then they watched a Santa show in the theatre and after that they met Santa's real reindeer and other furry friends in the animal village, and even had the chance to visit Santa's house! They had a fantastic time! On Monday 26th November Cherry class are going to Birmingham to visit the huge Synagogue there. During the morning they will be given a guided tour of the Synagogue to find out all about Judaism. The Year 5 and 6 children in Maple class will be going on a trip to Coventry Cathedral on Thursday 29th November where they will find out all about the WW2 Blitz. They will take a look at the old and new Cathedrals and find out what happened during the WW2 blitz in Coventry. They will also be able to examine some WW2 artefacts including a gas mask, ration book, etc. and as an extra special treat, they will climb up the Cathedral Tower where they will have a fabulous view of the city of Coventry!

Kilsby School's Christmas Fayre will take place on Friday 7th December 3.15pm – 5.00 pm. Do come along and join us. We shall have the usual stalls, including a bottle tombola, a chocolate tombola, raffle, a wrapping room, refreshments serving mulled wine and mince pies and of course, Santa will be there too! (Eds. See also ad. for the Pre-school bake off at the Fayre on page 8.)

The whole school are very fortunate to have the opportunity to go to the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry to see Sleeping Beauty on Thursday 13th December! Thank you very much to our hardworking KSA who have helped cover the cost of this wonderful treat! We are really looking forward to going.

The children's Christmas lunch will take place on Friday 14th December. Children can come to school dressed in their Christmas jumpers for this occasion. They will enjoy a freshly cooked Christmas meal and all the trimmings, with many thanks to our cook and lunchtime supervisors, who work wonders to feed over 100 people every year! There will be Christmas songs playing and crackers too. After their Christmas lunch, Rowan class will take a walk to Stephenson Court for carol singing with the residents starting at 1.30 pm. This is always a really enjoyable event, we hope the residents will have a good afternoon too. The children's Christmas parties will take place during the afternoon of Thursday 20th December. They will bring their party clothes into school, and change for the afternoon's fun. There will be party food and games and, if they have been good, Santa might make an appearance too! School closes for all, after the parties on Thursday 20th December. We hope that the children will enjoy a well-earned break and we will look forward to seeing them all back in school on Monday 7th January 2019. We wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Kilsby History Society (From Gill Mason, Tel: 822658) Our next meeting is on Thursday 24th January at 7.30 pm in the Kilsby Room. The speaker is Mrs Jackie Hibbert and her subject is: Outlaws, Sheriffs and Wild West Northamptonshire: Crime and Punishment in early 14th century West Northamptonshire (with all the gory bits). All are welcome Members £2.00 Visitors £3.00

Welcoming new residents (From Chris Lomas, Tel: 822650) With lots of houses changing hands in the village I am reminding everyone again that Welcome Packs, containing information about the village and useful contact details, are available for all new residents. These are being delivered to people on the new estate on the A361 as the houses are occupied, and are also available for anyone else moving into the village. The idea behind the scheme is that neighbours should ask for a pack when new people move in next door, and take this round when they go to say ‘hello’ to the new residents. We know from feedback that newcomers find the packs very helpful and it is lovely to be welcomed to the village. Unfortunately very few people are coming forward to tell us when newcomers have moved in and to ask for a pack and it is very difficult for us to keep tabs on all new arrivals in the village. So please, if someone new moves in next door to you, contact me on the number above, or at [email protected] and I will get a pack round to you so you can deliver it to your new neighbour. Let’s try and make all new residents feel as welcome as possible.

NOTE FROM THE EDITORS We have been sent a poem by someone signing themselves just ‘annoyed resident’ . The poem is about the nuisance being caused by those dog-owners who allow their animals to urinate on buildings, flower beds and grass, causing damage, especially to plants. It is Kronickle policy not to publish contributions which are sent anonymously, so we cannot print the poem, but we are passing on the concern expressed in it and the request for dog owners to be considerate of the property of other residents as far as is possible.

News from Kilsby Pre-school (From: [email protected]) This term, the children at Kilsby pre-school have been learning about fireworks night and how other countries use fireworks at different times of year. They have also been learning about Diwali. Michaela Ashby has very kindly, given up her time to come into pre-school and make bath bombs and soaps with the children, ready to sell at the Christmas Fayre. In December, the children will be looking at how other countries celebrate Christmas and comparing it to their own family traditions. They will also enjoy making their own Christmas decorations and learning new songs! FUNDRAISING: Rag Bag Collection We will be having a rag bag collection on Thursday 6th December. If you live in Kilsby, you can leave your unwanted clothing in bags outside your house and we will collect them for recycling. We are paid for each Kg of clothing that we give to the scheme, so your donations are always very much appreciated. (Eds: See page 9.)

Bake Off at the Christmas Fayre We will be joining forces with Kilsby school to host our first ever ‘Bake off’ competition. The competition is open to adult and children. Entry forms can be found at Kilsby community shop. (Eds: See page 8.)

We thank everyone who made it to our Quiz night fundraiser and for your ongoing support. All of us at Kilsby Pre-school wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Gardeners’ Corner Winter at last... So, another year when “October was the new September”. But just in the last week our birch trees have finally shed their leaves, so it now really is clearing up time.

Let the frost do the work It really makes life easier in the spring if you can dig your vegetable plot as soon as possible. Leave it as rough lumps of soil for the frost to break it down over the winter. This both kills a lot of weeds and leaves a fine surface that is easy to rake over for seed sowing in the spring.

Don’t rush into winter pruning There is plenty of time to prune fruit trees and bushes in February. Do that digging first! It is worth checking your fruit tree stakes and ties, particularly those on dwarfing rootstocks which will have weaker roots.

Prepare your spring bulbs Spring bulbs need a period of cold to start them into flowering. So put your potted-up bulbs out in the cold to suffer the frosts. They will flower all the better for it. Now is also a good time to clear the weeds from your bulb beds, giving them a good dose of bone meal to help root growth over the winter.

Jobs to do in December Plant that garlic you should have planted in

November! Clean your paths of moss and slippery

patches. Sit in the warm reading your gardening

catalogues. Order any remaining seeds and plants.

Jobs to do in January Clean and fumigate your greenhouse Expose pots of bulbs to frost but protect from

rain. Later in the month, sow tomatoes in warmth

for early crops.

Times past... In ‘National Allotments and Gardens Society Diary’, 1964:- ‘We would rather say that the rose is the one plant that will not resent the efforts of the amateur to the point where no roses are produced. General rules for pruning are the more vigorous, the less you cut; the weaker, the more ruthless you are. Hard pruning gives quality and light pruning gives quantity.”’ Good Gardening! Ron Kickle
