CONDO 1by Paul Milowe

I welcome back all unit owners returning home for our Fun Warm Winter season. The Condo 1 HOA Board will gladly accept all applicants for the upcoming board election. Please submit all resumes to Joel Neulight.

We have to applaud Doug for doing a Great Job getting our New contract with Gem Landscaping. Palm Greens Condo 1 is happy that Sal, who runs Gem, has a Degree in Horticulture and is keeping it looking Great.

We completed a reserve study on our property and you can come into the office to read it at your convenience.

Please use the new trash cans supplied by SWA. No plastic bags will be accepted outside of the trash cans. If you have large items for SWA, please contact them to give them a heads up on how big the item is. They may have to make an appointment with you to pick it up. The SWA phone number (561-697-2700) is on Channel 63 along with all new events.

If you haven’t given us your E-Mail address, please do so. This way we can notify you with all new information. We also ask that all “Snowbirds” call the office and let us know when you are leaving for the year, and when you return. If we have “mailings” to do, we need to know where to send them.

For those of us who need to exercise after the Thanksgiving Food Festivities, the gym on the lower clubhouse floor is open for business. Enjoy.

We wish to send our heart felt thanks to Marilyn Diekmann for the 10 excellent years she served as President of the Condo 1 HOA Board. This year is her last in this capacity.

Please bring all of your questions and concerns to the Board so we can give you the attention that you need. Thanks for your continuing support.

CONDO 2 TO ALL PALM GREENS

RESIDENTSby Susan Herman, President, Condo 2

As 2019 comes to an end, I’d like to recognize my fellow board members for their tremendous dedication to our community as clearly demonstrated by their tireless hours spent working on association business. Given their high salary of $00.00, and the unfortunate fact that it’s impossible to please everyone, they should be commended for their continued fortitude and perseverance. Next time you see Bob Atchick, Peter Driefus, Sandy Klimas or Christa Varsalone, please thank them. I also want to thank our wonderful staff, Gabe, Audi, Aldo, Sal, Jorge, Jorge, Ramon, Felix and Vincent. They have done an amazing job keeping our aging community under check. As the units get older and require more maintenance, our staff works extra hard to keep up with the needs of the community. Please thank them when you see them. If you haven’t noticed already, Rejeanna is back at the front desk. She gave birth to her baby girl in June and has returned to us. We are thrilled to have her back.

As 2019 comes to an end, I have to write about the 2020 budget. Everyone was mailed a copy and those who attended the budget meeting in November were able to ask questions. For those of you who did not attend its very important to note that this year’s budget was very difficult for us since there were several significant increases that we had no control over. Our insurance agent came to the budget meeting to explain why our insurance increased so dramatically. A major factor is that the accessed value of our condominiums has increased. The other significant increases were cable costs, the water utility and replacement of our dilapidated mailboxes. The Board continues to explore ways to bring overall expenses down. We realize that many of you will ask why we could not use the money that we are going to receive from 13th Floor to offset these increases. While we may be able to offset a small amount for maintenance and repair of the units, the majority of that money will be used for infrastructure repairs including replacing deteriorating steel beams in the units, other structural building repairs and updating the irrigation system.

As 2019 comes to an end, I am taking off my condominium hat and putting back on my oversized

RECREATION BOARDby Dave LeVine

Hello all and welcome back snowbirds! Chris, Charles and the rest of our Recreation Association staff have done a terrific job in getting our facilities in shape and we are looking forward to another fun and sun filled season at Palm Greens. 2020 will be the third year in a row that there will be no increase in the unit owners’ $59 per month contribution to the operation of the Recreation Association. Again, kudos to our Recreation Association staff for keeping things up and running without the need for budget -busting expenditures. For example, take a look at the beautiful job that our in-house maintenance staff recently completed on the resurfacing of the tennis courts, at a savings of $10,000, had we contracted the work out. As Shelly Cohen reported in the November Pulse, the Delray Trails permitting process is well underway. If things continue to go smoothly, 13th Floor’s construction of the new clubhouse/pools will likely commence this coming summer. The Association’s existing clubhouse/pool will remain in operation during the 12-18 months that it will take to complete and open the new facility, and the construction of the Delray Trails homes would begin in earnest after that. For those who are interested in seeing the types of homes that may be built on Delray Trails, 13th Floor anticipates that its single family and townhouse model homes at the Orioles (“Avalon Trails”) will be completed and opened for viewing around the end of March. In other news: The November 8, 2019 function honoring our Nation’s Veterans was a great success. Many thanks to Eleanor Horowitz for her coordination and leadership of this important event.

The Mixer for the Unit Owners and Renters who joined us in 2019 is set for December 9. If you are a newcomer and have not yet RSVP’d for this event you can still do so up until December 8. A flier containing all of the details with respect to the Mixer can be found elsewhere in this edition of the Pulse. Finally, two seats on the Recreation Association’s Board will be up for election this coming January, one from Condo 1 and one from Condo 2. A new president will then be chosen by the reconstituted Board since the incumbent, Tom Aldrich, may no longer serve as president due to the 3-year term limit for that position. Thank you, Tom, for your service as president!

FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR

by Mel Clapman

So, it’s December and we are hot and heavy into the new season, with all of our activities up and running.

If you are thinking of joining one of our clubs or organizations, now is the time. You’ll find the experience worthwhile as it allows you to get into the “flow” of Palm Greens and gives you the opportunity to make a contribution to the community in which you live.

In keeping the spirit of the month and the major holidays in which we get involved, it’s acceptable to say Thank You to the people with whom we work and depend on for a smooth, no-problem life.

First and foremost, we thank our Pulse writers, who sit down and create their articles seven times a season. Their subjects are interesting to read, informative and timely. They make us more knowledgeable about what’s going on and allow us to stay current about life in Palm Greens. We also thank the “Pulse People” without whom we would…simply put…have no Pulse. To our production manager, Beth Villanova, and our advertising Manager, Rhoda Misikoff, both of whom contribute heavily to the way the Pulse looks and bringing in the advertisers. And a tip of the hat to Minuteman, who not only prints our newspaper but designs its “look”, making it more eye-appealing and easy to read.

On to the service people who keep our community looking pretty and functional. Without them, our pristine tennis courts just wouldn’t look --pristine.

And we should not forget Pride and Nozzle Nolen, who service us when we have appliance and insect control issues. We know they are not perfect (who is?), but they do, for the most part, get the job done.

Finally, the clubs and organizations. I know I will leave some out and I apologize. But when you look at what they do, what they offer, and what they contribute, you certainly can appreciate their efforts. Tennis, theme parties and dances, contributions to school children and libraries, and hospitals and charities that are always in need of help, all receive the Palm Greens treatment that helps them move onward and upward.

Before we sign off, I think we can all agree, unequivocally, it has been some year. The 13th floor program by itself was quite a project. But at the end of the day, we pulled it altogether as a community and received a trove of perks, benefits and a new community that we will all be proud of. And let’s not forget the Milagro project and the donations to the victims of the terrible hurricanes. All in all, a wonderful effort by the people of Palm Greens. When you take a moment to think about where you are currently living, and the people with whom you associate, you should be very proud of yourself.

We wish all of you a Happy Holiday and a Healthy New Year and look forward to staying in touch with you as we go into 2020.

MEN’S CLUBby Mort Teisch

Welcome back remaining snowbird members. We look forward to seeing you at our December 15 meeting.

This was the first meeting I missed since becoming President, many moons ago, and I fully intend to be at subsequent meetings. Thanks to all the well wishers who called to check up on me.

Prior to last month’s initial meeting of the new season, all arrangements had been made for the coming meetings. At our Sunday, December 15 meeting, we will be having our usual breakfast and additionally, some pleasant entertainment.

We have secured a date for our golf tournament against our arch enemy Emerald Pointe. It will take place on Friday, February 28, the time to be determined. Sign-up sheets for the tournament as well as the fishing trip and shirt orders will be displayed at the next meeting.

As a constant reminder of the next meeting, check the Pulse, our web-site- www.palmgreens.org and Channel 63.

Looking forward to seeing you at the December 15th meeting.

ALLIANCE OF DELRAY RESIDENTIAL

ASSOCIATIONSby Judy Goldberg

Here we are, December 1st! Where is the time going? We want to wish all of our Palm Greens family Happy Holidays no matter what you celebrate. Enjoy the time with family and friends. Joy to all. Have a very Happy, Healthy, 2020.

The Alliance meeting for November was geared toward planning for the Election 2020 with Volunteer Opportunities & Voter Registration. We also learned about the 2020 Census.

Wendy Satory Link, Supervisor of Elections in Palm Beach County, announced a number of changes and procedures to voting. It will now be possible to see voter turnout in real time and early voting wait time. New security enhancements as well as back-up plans have been implemented. She displayed the new voting machines and invited the audience to try them out at the conclusion of the meeting. Additionally, two new programs have been established. The “Adopt-A-Precinct” program allows area clubs, groups, and organizations to participate by voting and earn some money for the group. The “Vote in Honor of a Veteran” program also is intent on increasing voter participation. There are three ways to cast a ballot: 1) Vote by Mail 2) Early Voting 3) Election Day at the Polls. To date, there are 966,253 active registrants, 45% Democrat and 38% Republican. The rest are Independents. Another item discussed was the sign up signature not matching prior one. Less than 1% of signatures do not match, but with new equipment this problem will be handled better. Also, with new machines, we will fill in our choice with an oval instead of connecting dots. All of this will be explained when packets are made available.

Lisa De La Rondo, from the Pam Beach County Public Affairs Office, discussed the importance of being counted and included in the census. Residents are given the options of using a paper form, a telephone call, on line (phones, tablets, etc.), or a personal visit from a census worker. Seasonal residents will be counted as of April 1. A representative from the Census Office emphasized that the census directly affects everyone in the form of money received from the federal government. This is money

THE HEALTH ROOMby Mel Clapman

Best types of exercises for seniorsNo matter how old you are, the best exercise for you

is the one you enjoy the most. After all, if you don’t like your workout, how long are you going to stick with it? Still, when sampling any of the countless forms of exercise out there, it’s important to keep in mind exactly what you want and need to get out of your workout. And that’s bound to change throughout the years.

To do that, focus on workouts designed to help you build strength, stay mobile, and improve balance. Also key is considering the requirements of any given fitness option. Are your bones strong enough for high-impact exercises such as running and jumping? Is your balance where it needs to be for fall-free bike rides? How much time do you realistically have to spend at the gym?

As always, it’s smart to check with your doctor before beginning a new fitness program, especially if you have a chronic condition, balance issues, or injuries. The good news: Assuming your doctor hasn’t said a type of exercise is off-limits, choose whatever you like—they’re all terrific.

1. Swimming There’s a reason swimming is called the world’s

perfect exercise. Whether you’re performing the breaststroke, taking a water aerobics class, or playing Marco Polo with the grandkids, getting in the pool is a great way to increase your cardiovascular fitness while also strengthening your muscles.

It does all this while putting minimal stress on your bones and joints, which is a major plus for men and women who have arthritis or osteoporosis. As if that isn’t enough reason to jump in, a 2012 study in the Journal of Aging Research suggests that swimming can help older adults keep their minds as sharp as their bodies. Not a swimmer? You can still benefit from water aerobics classes that stay in the shallow end of the pool.

2. YogaWith a holistic approach to fitness, yoga helps build

muscle strength, aerobic fitness, core stability, and total-body mobility—all of which are important for older adults. And while yoga is low-impact and gentle on your body’s joints, it’s still weight-bearing, meaning that you have to support your body’s weight with every posture. That’s vital to strengthening not just your muscles, but

TENNIS COMMITTEEby Bob Krokus

and Beverly Clapman

As the end of the year approaches, the Tennis Committee hopes everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends and are looking forward to celebrating all the holiday festivities.

We are starting to see all the improvements made to our tennis courts and surrounding areas. A big thank you to our Property Manager, Chris Sadej and his assistant Charles Medina, our Tennis Pro, Jim Boardman, and our liaison to the Recreation Board, Joseph Healy, for overseeing and providing us with all our needs. Our courts are looking beautiful with a fresh layer of Har-Tru applied by Aubrey and Luis. By the way, when you see them riding in their carts or grooming the courts, please say thank you for the service they provide. They work hard and always with a smile and a “pat on the back” goes a long way. The banners are up, the wind screens are down, new bag stands are in place, and the landscaping is a work in progress.

Golden Girls Status - As of week 6, it looks like Palm Greens will be in a three-way race to the finish line. We will be facing both our competitors in the final weeks, so it will be anyone’s chance to finish in first place.

Inter-Condo Status – We are unable to report information on the teams at this time due to some uncertainties a few of the teams are experiencing, but the January issue will definitely provide you with the levels and captains of all our teams.

Jim Boardman is back and will be starting his FREE clinics the first week of December with beginners on Tuesdays from 11:30 -12, and intermediates on Fridays from 11:30 -12. Take advantage of this great opportunity to learn the fun game of tennis or to sharpen your strokes and strategy and enhance your game skills.

The Rotation Program is up and running. We have made some changes to the sign-up process so please be patient as we work out any blips that you make us aware of. If you have any problems don’t hesitate to speak with any members of the tennis committee to help you get on board. The Rotation Program is a wonderful way to play with and meet new players on your level. Great friendships have been formed due to this program, both on and off the courts.

Your Tennis Committee wishes everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy Healthy New Year!

Enjoy your time on the courts!Game-Set-Match!

TIPS FROM OURTENNIS PRO

by Jim Boardman (USTPA Pro)

Lob and Approach – When you’re playing doubles against a team, with the server back and the

other player at the net, you can take control by lobbing your return to the server and moving in, even though the server can easily return your lob. He probably won’t hurt you, and your side can take over the net.

FOUR SEASONSby Sherry Stein

Turning the calendar page to December, finds the Four Seasons Club activities in full swing. We continue to welcome back our returning members. Hoping that

your Thanksgiving was a good one filled with the warmth of family and friends. Wishing an especially happy and merry Holiday Season to all!

Those members who have recently returned to Palm Greens certainly missed November’s Hoedown which featured Square and Line Dancing. A wonderful time was had by all as we ‘dosi-doed’ our partners and bowed to our corners. Thanks to Kate Dalton and Jill Rothman for coordinating the event.

On Saturday, December 7th, we look forward to our Welcome Back Brunch. This delightful event, offering a full array of delicious entrees at the Delray Beach Golf Club will feature the song stylist, Andrea Garofalo. Members, $27 and guests $34. I hope you have already reserved your tables. Any questions, please call Bobby at 561-499-5170 or Judy at 516- 983-8045.

Be sure to join us Thursday night, January 9th, 2020. You won’t want to miss our Night of International Dancers, Music and Magic held at the Clubhouse. Be prepared to be entertained by two extraordinarily talented women who will delight you with a show of dance, magic and surprises. A delicious sit-down dinner, including salad, entrée (choice of short ribs, chicken marsala or snapper oreganata), dessert (make your own ice cream sundae) and coffee or tea will be served at your tables. Please note – this event is something special and not our usual dance. The cost is $28 for members and $35 for guests. This event will sell out quickly, you don’t want to be closed out. Check the flyers in the clubhouse and get your checks and table arrangements in ASAP. If you have any questions, please call Ellen Euse at 561-865-7888 or Sherry Stein at 561-637-3272.

Membership dues for 2020 are now being accepted. Checks for $15 per person should be put in an envelope with Four Seasons Club clearly indicated on it and placed in the “CLUB” box in the Clubhouse. Don’t miss out on the fun and event subsidies that membership provides.

The action just keeps on going, mark your calendars for a fun Valentine’s evening of music and dancing with the fabulous group ‘Cruzin’ on Saturday, February 15,

2020. And on Sunday, March 8th you won’t want to miss our Spring Brunch. There will be more information to follow.

Be sure to check Channel 63, our website www.palmgreens.org and the flyers in the Clubhouse for future events. Activities are planned year-round for your enjoyment.

Sharing good times and friendships at our functions is what the Four Seasons Club is all about. Looking forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events!

BOOK CLUBby Joan Zimmer

In response to some requests from Palm Greens residents, the December Book Club will be held on Wednesday, December 18, at 7:30 PM at the Clubhouse. The book to be discussed is IN THE MIDST OF WINTER by Isabel Allende. It begins with a minor traffic accident that leads to a love story between two people who thought they were into the “winter of their lives”. Please join us for a friendly and interesting evening.

POINTS OF INTEREST FORPALM GREENERS

by Mel Clapman

Now that you’re all settled in for the season, it would be a good time to start thinking about places that you and the family can go to. Here are some suggestions. With its beaches, hammocks and meadows, Palm Beach County is home to animals great and small. Here are just some of the amazing places you can take your family for an up-close encounter.

Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge (west of Boynton Beach): Nearly 144,000 acres of protected land is home to 257 species of birds, 23 types of mammals and 60 species of reptiles and amphibians. It is home to the American alligator and the critically endangered Everglades snail kite. In any given year, as many as 257 species of birds may use the Refuge’s diverse wetland habitats. Address: 10216 Lee Rd, Boynton Beach, Phone: 561-732-3684

Busch Wildlife Sanctuary (Jupiter): Rescued animals of all types are cared for at this naturally designed site. Here you can see alligators, bald eagles and panthers, to name a few. The Sanctuary is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and conservation of Florida’s wildlife and natural resources. Address: 2500 Jupiter Park Dr, Jupiter, Phone: 561 575-3399

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center (Boca Raton): Families can enjoy wandering the boardwalk and exploring the tanks while learning about local wildlife, like butterflies, sea turtles and more. A variety of native fish, sharks, and other marine animals reside in marine aquariums. Indoor displays feature wildlife indigenous to South Florida and a series of stained glass windows depicting the coastal island as it may have appeared in the 1500s. Address: 1801 N Ocean Blvd, Boca Raton, Phone: 561 544-8605

Manatee Lagoon (West Palm Beach): Manatees are slow-moving, gentle marine mammals attracted to warm waters. You can watch manatees, and their calves, swim and then learn all about this delicate creature at the FPL Eco-Discovery Center. Offering free admission, Manatee Lagoon welcomes visitors with engaging opportunities to learn about them. Exhibits offer insight into South Florida’s coastal ecosystem. Address: 6000 N Flagler Dr, West Palm Beach, Phone: 561-626-2833

As always, we encourage you to call ahead so you have the latest status on shows, prices and times.

TENNIS SOCIAL CLUBby Sharon Dorfman

By now most of the snowbirds will have returned to beautiful sunny Florida. We are anticipating a great season. DID YOU EVER WONDER ABOUT THEADOPT-A-HIGHWAY PROGRAM?

It’s a fact. Most of drive on highways. Some just locally and others long-distance.

But the common denominator is we do spend time on these open roads.

And oft time as not, we see the ubiquitous Adopt-a-Highway signs. Has anyone ever taken a mo-ment to question what this program is all about and how did it ever start?

Well, we thought you might find the following facts about the Adopt-A-Highway program interesting and, maybe, humorous.

On March 9, 1985, the first-ever Adopt-a-Highway sign was erected on Texas’s Highway 69. The highway was adopted by the Tyler Civitan Club, which committed to picking up trash along a desig-nated two-mile stretch of the road. And so it began. And over the years, the program developed into part of the American culture…to the point where it found itself in TV shows, books and other media. Here are some examples.

• In the hit U.S. sitcom Seinfeld episode “The Pothole”, Feb. 20, 1997, Cosmo Kramer adopts a mile of the fictional Arthur Burghardt Expressway. Kramer proceeds to alter the 4 lane highway to 2 lanes to allow the creation of wider “leisure lanes”, which results in major traffic congestion.

• In the American Dad! episode “It’s Good to Be Queen” Francine comments on the cleanliness of the highway and gives thanks to the Ku Klux Klan.

• In the Simpsons episode “Krusty Gets Kan-celled”, Bette Midler is seen picking up trash along a stretch of highway she has adopted, and causes car crashes for drivers who deliberately litter.

• In Rick Riordan’s The Trials of Apollo, Book 2: The Dark Prophecy, the character Apollo finds his destination via an Adopt-a-Highway sign sponsored by the book’s antagonist, Triumvirate Holdings.

FRIDAY NIGHT MOVIES

Now that we are in the midst of the new season, it would be smart to put “The Friday Night Movie” on the top of your activities list. We make every attempt possible to show the most up-to-date movies in a variety of cat-egories including comedy, drama, musicals and other timely features.Seating is first come – first served. It featured five hit singles by Whitney Houston: “I Will Al-ways Love You,” “Run to You,” “I’m Every Woman,” “I Have Nothing,” and “Queen of the Night.” The film was Houston’s acting debut and was the second high-est grossing film of 1992 (the first was Aladdin).

SQUARE DANCING, LINE DANCING AND ROUND DANCINGTAKE THE SPOTLIGHT AT THE FOUR SEASONS HOEDOWN

by Mel Clapman

The doors to the clubhouse opened at 6 PM and in marched almost 100 neckerchief, straw hat and cowboy boots-wearing Palm Greeners ready to “Dozy-doh and Allemande left” at the Country Hoedown sponsored by the Four Seasons Club.

The floor was jam-packed as the professional caller and his lovely assistant walked the guests through the ABC’s of country dancing.

Fortified by 6-foot subs, soft drinks, coffee and dessert, the crowd never let up and a “grand-old” time was had by all.

PALM GREENS CELEBRATES ITSANNUAL VETERAN’S DAY PROGRAM

On Saturday, November 9, Palm Greens celebrated its annual Veteran’s Day program in the clubhouse.

The program was hosted by Eleanor Horowitz, who welcomed the almost 100 people attending this event. Under the baton of Morty Teisch, the Palm Greens chorus led the guests in singing “America the Beautiful”, the “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.

The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Volunteer Honor Guard performed the raising of the flag, the Pledge of Allegiance” and ended with a soulful “Taps”.

The guest speaker was Jennifer Mackinday, who spoke about her experiences with the renowned Wounded Warriors Project.

The ceremony closed with Eleanor acknowledging The Veteran’s Day Committee consisting of Chris Sadej and Charles Medina, and the Honor Guard. Refreshments were then served and the Palm Greens Annual Veteran’s Day event was concluded.

also your bones. If you are new to yoga, look for an introductory

class that will teach you the basics. Restorative, hatha, and Iyengar classes are also great options. Talk to your class instructor about any physical limitations before getting started.

4. Bodyweight TrainingOne out of every three older adults experiences

severe muscle loss, according to an analysis in Age and Ageing. Meanwhile, when it comes to fighting age-related abdominal fat—a marker for overall health—Harvard research shows that strength training is more time-efficient than cardiovascular exercise.

Fortunately, you don’t have to bench press a ton of weight to keep your muscles healthy and prevent fat gain over the years. For most older adults, it’s far safer to start small. Simple bodyweight exercises such as chair squats, single-leg stands, wall pushups, and stair climbing will do a great job at keeping your body strong and ready to tackle everyday activities.

5. CyclingAnother low-impact form of exercise, cycling is ideal

for those who want to increase their leg strength, but can’t run or engage in other high-impact sports due to osteoporosis or joint issues, Cycling also helps improve cardiovascular health, metabolic health, and cognitive performance in adults older than 70.

If you have cycling trails near your home, consider scheduling regular bike rides with family or friends. Indoor cycling is another great option for those without access to trails or when weather conditions aren’t ideal. Plus, with a stationary bike, you don’t have to worry about falls or needing to wear a helmet.

CLARIFICATION OF TENNIS COMMITTEE REGISTRATION FEE

It has come to the attention of the Tennis Com-mittee that there is some confusion about the $20 Registration Fee. The following will hopefully clear up any questions you may have.

The $20 Fee is used to help defray any costs the Tennis Committee incurs in managing the many activities available to the tennis community. These costs are not reimbursed by the Recreation Board. The Tennis Committee authorizes this fee to be charged to all participants in the Rotation Program where balls are supplied all year long, Inter-Condo team play and Special Events followed by a catered brunch in the Clubhouse.

ANYONE NOT ChOOSING TO PAY ThE $20 FEE CAN USE ANY AVAILABLE COURTS, BUT CANNOT PARTICIPATE IN ThE ABOVE-MENTIONED ACTIVITIES.

As written in our Rules and Regulations hand-out, priority use of the courts are the Rotation Program and Inter-Condo matches and practices. As of December there will be sign-up sheets in the ten-nis office for open play.

Please mark your calendars for January 8, 2020 at 4 PM for tennis.

that will be used for health care, education, infrastructure, and other important areas of Floridians lives. Anyone interested in becoming a census worker can apply online at 2020census.gov. Pay is $17/hour & up.

Captain Zandt of the PBC Sheriff’s Office reminded us that the holiday season brings a higher amount of crime. He urged that everyone be especially wary of people posing as maintenance workers who try to gain access to their home. Also, he recommended the “RING” doorbell. This is effective in combating crime by allowing the homeowner to see who is at the door. NO, he does not get a commission on sales!

Lieutenant Morales also emphasized the “RING”. He also urged the audience to download the app call Neighbors. This app posts information within the community as well as allowing videotaping in real time around the community. This too is a very effective crime fighter. Please remember to LOCK YOUR CARS and do not leave any personal items in plain sight.

Karen Brill of the PBC School Board reported that the principal of Spanish River High School was fired because of voicing his opinion concerning the reality of the Holocaust. Additionally, there is a class action lawsuit that has been filed against vaping.

State Attorney Dave Aronberg criticized the state for putting up roadblocks to block the implementation of Amendment 4 – allowing former felons to vote. This amendment was passed by a large margin of Florida voters and has yet to go into effect. Efforts are being made to correct this injustice. Efforts are also being made to make animal cruelty a federal crime. This is overdue!

Lori Vinikoor, Executive Vice President, announced that on Feb. 7, 2020, the Alliance will host a getting to Know Palm Beach County Expo. The Expo will be held from 9AM to noon at the South County Civic Center. It is a chance to become familiar with government operations, safety services, elected officials and all resources available to the public. There will be lots of “treats” presented in the Alliance of Delray’s signature style! MATURE DRIVER COURSE AT THIS EVENT. To register for courses, contact Lori Vinikoor at [email protected] or call or message at 561-715-1530. Admission is Free.

The next meeting of the Delray Alliance will be on Wednesday, December 4, 2020. And the topic will be focused on the Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and Delray Medical Center Emergency Services.

Meetings take place at the South County Civic

Center, 16700 Jog Road, Delray Beach, across from Morikami. Doors open at 9AM when refreshments are served. The meeting begins at 9:30 and always concludes by 11:30. All are welcome.

See you there.

YOU KNOW HOW YOU BROUGHT IN THE NEW YEAR…

EVER WONDER HOW IT’S DONE ELSE-WHERE?

Here’s a “shorthand” description of how people around the world spend New Year’s Eve.

Big Fireworks DisplaysOne of the most popular ways to celebrate seeing in

the New Year is with big fireworks displays. These take place all over the world, as different

countries hit midnight. In New Zealand, crowds gather at Auckland Sky

Tower in the capital for an impressive fireworks dis-play, and the same happens in Sydney Harbour in Aus-tralia.

In Toronto in Canada, people gather in Nathan Phil-lips Square, while in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, people flock to the city’s famous Copacabana beach to watch the sky being lit up by fireworks.

Smashing PlatesIf you came out of your front door to find a load of

smashed plates, you might be a bit confused. But that’s exactly what people in Denmark hope to

find after midnight, as it means good luck. So, if you were Danish, you might go and smash a

plate on a friend’s doorstep to bring good luck over the next 12 months.

Eating GrapesWhen the clocks hit midnight in Spain, you’ll find

people reaching for grapes. This is because there is a tradition to eat one grape

each time the clock strikes at midnight. The idea is that this will bring you 12 lucky months in the year ahead.

As you know, I am also a member of the Palm Greens Community Association Board and I will continue to serve in that capacity as we transition from the negotiation stages of Delray Trails to the actual construction process.

As 2019 comes to an end, it’s time to encourage you to attend the candidate forum on December 18, to meet the unit owners who are running for the Board of Directors. I also strongly encourage you to vote and attend the annual meeting in January. There are two positions available for the board of directors and the two incumbents, Christa and I, are not running. I commend all the candidates for throwing their hat in the ring. While it’s not always an easy job, it’s a very important one. The election for Board of Directors should be taken very seriously. These are the people that you entrust to make decisions that affect your lives.

As 2019 comes to an end, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year filled with laughter and love.

SEVEN TIPS TO FOLLOW AS ARESIDENT OR GUEST AT

PALM GREENS

You’ve heard it before and, for the most part, you follow through like a responsible Palm Greener. But, it doesn’t hurt to review the following tips to make your life and the lives of your fellow residents a more comfortable one.

1. Please make sure that you have your master key. Replacing a lost key will cost you $100. So don’t lose it!

2. Don’t forget to patronize the Poolside Café. The food is good and the price is right. And you just can’t beat the breakfast specials!

3. Please do business with our advertisers. This is important for two reasons. First, they can use your business, and second it helps them justify advertising in The Pulse.

4. Make sure you carry your Palm Greens ID card at all times. Sometime in your life, some one will ask you for your Palm Greens ID. Don’t be the one who says, “Huh?”

5. Check out our resurfaced tennis courts. They are the best Har-Tru, the lines are easy to see and your game will definitely pick up while you’re at it. Stop over to the shuffleboard area. Ten courts, no waiting, and usually someone around to help you with your game if you are a newbie.

6. The poolroom and workout room in the club-house are available for your enjoyment. Just don’t be a “gym hog” and treat the equipment as though it is your own.

7. Thank you for not bringing drinks and food into the pool area. And thanks again for cleaning up after you finish with your refreshments.
