Chris Lawton -

CPNZ Trust Board Chairperson

A Word from our Chair.....

Chris Lawton,Trust Board Chairperson

I wish you all the best and safe patrolling,

I am sure that like many of you, the closing of 2020 is a blessing and we are all looking forward to a newyear. If we reflect on the year that's almost up we will no doubtconsider the efforts everyone made to get through thepandemic, which internationally is still worrying many peopleand their families around the world. We have come through, and hopefully it will remain so, but importantly we have learnedsomething, as individuals, as a country and as an organisation.Because we have done so well, we are able to come togetheragain as a group.

Next year's national event has been planned for Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th March inPalmerston North. We have given it a name to express the focus, which is on Patrol leadership. Itis to be entitled The EEE - Educate, Empower, Excell!

Many of you stand up and show leadership in some form or another, leading, coordinating, managing volunteers, directing patrollers, managing funding and money. These, and many more, are all efforts that fit under the heading of leadership and enable a Patrol to run effectively.

Over the last few years we have established training for Patrollers, and on that solid platform wecan now establish a standard for Patrol leaders. So please join us at the EEE, where face-to-facewe can focus on leadership, an extremely valuable skill and knowledge base. At the event we willalso launch our Manual of Best Practice, a document that is being developed to assist the leadersof a Patrol. More information will flow from our National Office, but if you have any pressingqueries, please call or email the office.

I want to expressly thank all Patrollers for the year we have gone through. It has had its difficultiesbut there have always been the friends and colleagues within this organisation to call upon whenneeded. I think this year we have moved ahead as a single organisation with a combined focus. Our communications are becoming more frequent and efficient as we remove barriers andprofessionalise our publications.

On behalf of the CPNZ Board and staff I wish you a merry Xmas anda great start to the new year.

The Aggravated Robbery Initiative has beenoperating since 2017 identifying at risk smallbusinesses and offering participation to thoselocations which fit the description of a small business, specifically dairies/superettes, and independentlyowned liquor stores and petrol stations (not part of afranchise). The Initiative asks for the business tocontribute $250 for an installed fog cannon worth inexcess of $4,000. To date the initiative has installed 618 fog cannonsinto small business nationally and provided CrimePrevention through Environmental Design to manymore. Criteria for participation in the initiative hasbeen broadened using evidence identified at riskareas and further international research. NZ Police have asked for our assistance to identifylocal affiliated Community Patrols who would bewilling to complete the surveys of local smallbusinesses identified through geospatial informationon commercial aggravated robberies. Community Patrollers have local knowledge, havebuilt relationships within the communities they patroland would be in a perfect position to apply theirknowledge of local areas to ensure the most at riskbusinesses are identified and offered the preventiontools to reduce harm within those communities. The Waikato District is the first area for NZ Police totarget and patrollers in this District have recently beenasked to assist. As further Districts are identified,Patrol Leaders will be contacted. It was great to read the Safer Plates history in a previous briefing and we thank Graeme for providingthese screws to us before retiring and we wish him all the best!

Our favourite Police Liaison Officer pitched the idea to me back in July and I said let’s do it! Wewanted to raise the Patrols profile, raise some funds, maybe get some more patrollers and makePorirua Safer! As we had never done this before I asked Tawa Community Patrol if they could helpus and so we want to thank especially thank Darryl and Graeme for their invaluable support andassistance.

On the 26 September 2020 we held our Safer Plates atCountdown Aotea in collaboration with our Community Police and Tawa Community Patrol.

We had a very successful day with the Major of Porirua Anita Baker stopping by to support us.

Last year CPNZ announced that Patrollers are eligible to access an amazing scholarshipopportunity with Outward Bound New Zealand and attend their once in a lifetime coursesfor a fraction of the normal price.

Our latest Patroller to take advantage of this opportunity was Waitakere CP PatrolLeader, Louise Grevel.

"Two weeks back and it seems just like yesterday, after returning from the mostepic adventure at Outward Bound NZ, located in the magnificent Queen CharlotteSound / Tōtaranui area of the Marlborough region.

A truly magical setting with the most breath-taking scenery, providing a taste ofeach season in just an eight-day period. The Discovery Masters course is perfectlydesigned for the mature yet intrepid adventurer, keen to embark on a personaljourney, challenging both body and mind beyond habitual bounds.

I’m not entirely sure I have sufficient descriptive capability to aptly capture theattributes the Outward Bound Trust has to offer but I can say that it was one ofthe most incredible adventures I have participated in and I’m extremely grateful tomy philanthropic sponsors for providing me the privilege to participate.

Full immersion (yes, literally water) from the very get-go saw us embarking on bush, water and height activities designed to push past any self-imposed physical limitations, along with completely tuning out from routine daily stress to reflect, reassess andre-set.

An opportunity to meet some truly inspiring individuals, forming firm friendships thatwill continue as we travel and connect going forward as OB Alumni.

The banter and the memories we will treasure, reflecting on just how much weachieved and how we miss those pre breakfast icy plunges!

If Outward Bound features on your ‘one day’ list, do not hesitate, book yourself innow, you won’t regret it I guarantee it!"
