Dear Friends, Virginia wrote a letter to Santa Claus…… Somehow, that letter gets printed each year in newspapers across the country as an expression of innocence and the basic goodness and generosity of humanity. I am thinking about that phenomenon as I am writing this letter to you. It’s actually the 31st year where I have written a weekly letter to parishioners. I began writing such a weekly letter when I was first named pastor at Holy Rosary Church in St. Amant, La. I chose the title “Life Together” from Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor-martyr from the time of World War II, who was and is one of my inspirations. I am aware that our founding pastor, Fr. Gene Engels, had his letters to parishioners in Langniappe which were at times something else indeed---hilarious, confounding; you never quite knew what Gene was going to say. Over the years, I’ve been a bit more tame, I suppose. Just trying to connect with you. So, here for the 31st time, I am wishing my parish a Blessed Christmas. It continues to be my joy to live within this parish, and to literally share life with you. St. Jean Vianney is a blessing, and a Church with so many wonderful people. For all of us who are priests, we count ourselves so blessed when we can say that about the parish who “takes us in for a little while.” So, thank you for taking me in. I look forward to seeing you at Christmas this year, celebrating the yearly commemoration of the Lord Jesus’ birth and experiencing the blessings of this unique church community, this Body of Christ. A little gift: Silence of midnight, voices of angels, singing to bid night yield to the dawn; Darkness is ended, sinners befriended, where in the stable Jesus is born. Timothy-Dudley-Smith God bless you and yours. Love,

We extend our sympathy to the following parishioners who recently lost a loved one:

To the family of Betty Applin. To the family of Don Touchet on the death of his

mother, Grace Touchet Theard. To the family of Carl Gebhart on the death of his

brother Louis Gebhart.

Religious Education Request Would you like to share your knowledge of the sacraments with 5th grade students on Monday evenings? We are in need of a teacher for the second semester, beginning Jan. 13th from 6 – 7:00 pm on Monday evenings. There will only be a total of 10 classes left for the current school year – can you make that commitment to share your faith? Jesus assures us that those who follow Him in the ministry of teaching the Good News will receive rewards both in this life and in eternal life! Call Denise or Betty for further information at 751.2926.

The Five Giving Principles As part of our parish’s Total Stewardship program, in the weeks to come we will discuss the significance of the

Stewardship of Finance. Five elements of spiritual giving—the Five Giving Principles—help us express our generosity and our prayerful participation in the work of ministry and service. The five established principles include the following: Giving is planned. Giving is proportionate. Giving is sacrificial. Giving is a free expression, and giving is an act of prayer.

50th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy

Rereading Sacrosanctum Concilium

in Its Historical Context

As we entered into the Year of Faith, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI invited the Church to attentive reflection on the documents of Vatican II. As we study anew the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, we cannot help but to appreciate it in light of what followed after it at the Council, namely the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium. . . ), the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum. . . ), and the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes. . . ). These four constitutions together form the backbone of Vatican II, and should a ways be seen in relation to each other.

In addition, it is important to recall that the Constitution on

the Sacred Liturgy was the fruit of the evolution of the

Church's teaching on the Liturgy, especially from the

early years of the last century. The reformed Liturgy was

the result of extensive historical scholarship and reflection

on pastoral needs, and it was carried out by the

specially-created Consilium under the direction of the

Sacred Congregation of Rites (later to become the

Congregation for Divine Worship) and Venerable Pope

Paul VI. Among numerous examples, we cite two.

The first example is from the pontificate of Pope St. Pius X, who, in his 1903 landmark statement on music in the Liturgy, Tra le Sollectudini, stated that the purpose of the Liturgy is "the glory of God" and "the sanctification and edification of the faithful" (no. 1). St. Pius X also made the concept of liturgical participation a matter of papal teaching: "[T]he faithful assemble for…acquiring this [true Christian] spirit from its foremost and indispensable font, which is the active participation in the most holy mysteries and in the public and solemn prayer of the Church." This 1903 motu proprioemphasized that music sung by the assembly (in addition to music sung by a choir) was an important means of participation in the Sacred Liturgy. Tra le Sollecitudiniclearly set a standard for subsequent magisterial documents.

The second example is that of Venerable Pope Pius XII,

who believed the liturgical movement was a sign of God's

providential work and a movement of the Holy Spirit in the

Church, drawing the faithful closer to the mysteries of the faith and the riches of grace that flow from active participation in the Liturgy (cf. Discourse to the Participants in the First International Congress of Pastoral Liturgy at Assisi, September 22, 1956: AAS 48 [1956], 712). Pope Pius XII undertook some revision

himself in a particular way with the restoration of the rites

of Holy Week and the Easter Vigil (1951-56). Two of this

Pope's many encyclicals—Mediator Dei. . . (1947), on the

Sacred Liturgy, and Mystici Corporis Christi. . . (1943),

on the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ—were highly

influential on the thinking that undergirded the

Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, and, in fact, were

valuable building blocks for its drafting.

We believe that the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy

should be understood as a "keystone," with both a history

leading to it and other developments flowing from it. For

example, the praenotandae(introductions) to all the rites

as revised after Vatican II are important sources for

theological, liturgical, and pastoral teaching on the

contents of the revised rites. In addition, other magisterial

documents on the Liturgy since Vatican II continue to

shed light on the Constitution's vision of the Sacred

Liturgy. For instance, the General Instruction of the

Roman Missal, Blessed John Paul II's Encyclical

Ecclesia de Eucharistia. . . (2003), the Instruction of the

Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the

Sacraments, Redemptionis Sacramentum. . . (2004),

and the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortations of Pope

Benedict XVI—Sacramentum Caritatis. . . (2007), on the

Eucharist in the Life and Mission of the Church, and

Verbum Domini. . . (2010), on the Word of God in the

Life and Mission of the Church—are examples of the

ongoing authoritative teaching about the Sacred Liturgy

and the celebration of the Eucharist, all in continuity with

Sacrosanctum Concilium.

SJV Parishioners Share Birthday, Christmas Greetings Through Angola

Card Ministry

For the second year, a group of SJV parishioners is sharing Christmas greetings and birthday well wishes with the men of the Catholic Community at Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola). This year our SJV school students created more than 500 cards to send as Christmas greetings from our parish. Parishioners who would like to participate may donate new Christmas cards to the SJV card ministry program by bringing your cards to the parish office. The card ministry group can use these for next year’s Christmas card mailing or send extra cards to the men so they can send holiday greetings to their families.
