A: The 16th century author of the Shulchan Arukh, Rav Yosef Cairo writes (OC 681:2) that in Shul on Motzei Shabbat, lighting the Menorah precedes the recitation of Havdalah. The 16th century Ashkenazik halakhic authority, the Rema (ibid) adds that the same thing would apply when lighting at home, as one has already heard Havdalah in Shul. The Mishna Brura (OC 681:2), authored by Rav Yisrael Meir Ha'Kohen Kagan (1839-1933) explains that although we generally have a principle of “tadir v’sheino tadir, tadir kodem,” - the activity which is performed more often should be performed first. In this case we light the Chanukah candles first because it allows us to extend Shabbat and publicize the miracle (pirsumei nisa) for a longer time. However, Rav Dovid Ha’Levi Segal, the Taz (1586-1667) argues and says that the principle of “tadir v’sheino tadir, tadir kodem” trumps the other factors and thus Havdalah should be recited first (OC 681:1). Both the Mishna Brura (OC 681:3) and the Aruch Hashulchan (681:2), authored by Rav Yechiel Michel Ha’Levi Epstein (1829-1908), rule that in Shul one should first light the Menorah and afterwards recite Havdalah. With regard to the proper order at home though, the Mishna Brura writes that this dispute remains unresolved and thus both options are valid (see also the Aruch Hashulchan (681:2) who says that the minhag in Lithuania was to recite Havdalah first unless one already heard Havdalah in shul, and Teshuvot Melamed L’hoil 1:122 where Rav Dovid Tzvi Hoffman writes that the custom in Germany was to recite Havdalah first). Rav Ovadia Yosef (Yechave Daat 1:75) writes that Sefardim have the custom in their homes to first recite Havdalah and then light the Menorah. Sefer Minhagim 1) On Friday we start Mincha a little earlier so that the Menorah

may be lit right after Mincha. We only say the Brakhot and Hanerot Halalu when the candles are lit. We sing Maoz Tzur before Bameh Madlikin.

2) On Friday night of Shabbat Hanukah, we recite Bameh Madlikin in Shul.

3) On Shabbat Hanukah at Minha we delete Tzidkatcha Tzedek and we don’t recite Kel-Male.

4) On Saturday night the Menorah is lit before Vayehi Noam, right after the Hazi Kaddish after the silent Amidah.

5) During the regular days of Hanukah, the Hazan says Hazi Kaddish after Hallel. On Shabbat and Rosh Hodesh, the Hazan says Kaddish Shalem after Hallel.

6) This year Rosh Hodesh coincides with Shabbat. The following is the order for the Tefilot right after Shacharit and before the Torah reading:

1) Anim Zemirot 2) Shir Shel Yom 3) Barchi Nafshi 4) Mizmor Shir Chanukat Ha’Bayit 5) Mourner’s Kaddish

7) This year Rosh Hodesh Tevet falls out on Shabbat Hanukah. We take out of the Aron Hakodesh three Sifrei Torah. The first is used for Parshat HaShavua. Six Aliyot are read from that Sefer. The second is used for the Rosh Hodesh reading. The third is for the Hanukah reading. Hazi Kaddish should be recited after the second Sefer Torah, and the second and third Sefer Torah should be on the Shulchan. The first Sefer Torah does not need to be replaced on the Shulchan for Kaddish.

8) When Rosh Hodesh Tevet falls out on Shabbat, the Haftorah is just the Haftorah for Hanukah. We do not add any other verses mentioning Rosh Hodesh.
