To Our Guests:Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Cityview.
Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service.
The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today.
If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. We have clipboards next to each row: we call those our “Connection Cards”. These are a place for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know, and to request any information from us that you might need. Pastor Dan Adamson ([email protected]) is alwaysenthusiastic to meet you in person, as well.
For Children:Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service.
Nursery is provided during the service for children 2 years of age and younger.
Children ages three through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the greeting portion of the service.
If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Interim Children’s Ministry Coordinator Lynda Adamson ([email protected]).
Community Life:After the ServiceEach week, we linger for fellowship with one another. Please join us for refreshments in the cafeteria.
Community GroupsCommunity Groups are the primary way to get to know people at Cityview. At a Community Group, you will be invited to deepen your spiritual involvement with others. You will find a weekly opportunity to study the scripture passage for the upcoming week’s sermon and pray together. We welcome new members throughout the year. When & Where

The LiturgyPreparing in StillnessWe often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read the reflections, look over the rest of the service or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.
Call to WorshipWe need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas- and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.
Confession of SinBecause sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.
Assurance of GraceChrist has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.
Worship Through GivingBecause money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.
The SermonSome view the sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.
CommunionCommunion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with his church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament.
The BenedictionGod always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

ORDER OF WORSHIP
Ever since the child was born, there have been people who have gotten drunk on him no less than a man can get drunk on hard liquor. Or if that metaphor seems crude, all the way down the twenty centuries since that child was born, there have been countless different kinds of people who in spirit, who have been grasped by him, caught up into his life, who have found themselves in deep and private ways healed and transformed by their relationships with him, so much so that they simply have no choice but to go on proclaiming what the writers of the Gospels first proclaimed: that he was indeed the long expected one, the Christ, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace - all these curious and forbidding terms that Christians keep on using in their attempt to express in language one thing and one thing only. That in this child, in the man he grew up to be, there is the power of God to bring light into our darkness, to make us whole, to give a new kind of life to anybody who turns toward him in faith, even to such as you and me. — Frederick Buechner
God Calls Us
Call to Worship — based on John 1:14; Philippians 2:5-7; Colossians 1:15
The Advent wreath is a circle with no beginning and no end. It is a symbol of God’s unending love and faithfulness.
Jesus Christ is the brightest revelation of God’s love. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
Christ Jesus, who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
But made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,The glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
5
Prayer of AdorationO God, we joyously come together to worship, realizing we need not summon you into our midst, for you are here. We need not call you into the secret places of our hearts, for you are there. We need our eyes of faith to be opened, that we may see you; our ears to be unstopped, that we may hear you; our minds to be sensitive, that we may know you; our hearts to be tender, that we may receive you. Grant each one a blessing, O Lord, as each has need, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

God Cleanses Us
Confession of Sin Father in heaven, you call us to walk in your light,
yet at times we have been half-hearted in our response. You call us to walk in your light and confess our sins,
yet at times we have chosen the darkness of keeping them hidden. You call us to walk in your light and believe the good news of the gospel,
yet at times we have chosen the darkness of being plagued by guilt. You call us to walk in your light and obey your commandments,
yet at times we have chosen the darkness of rebellion.

Assurance of Grace - adapted from Isaiah 9The people who walk in darkness have seen a great light. Those who dwell in a land of deep darkness, on them the light has shined. For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given. And the government will be upon his shoulders, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
In Jesus, we are forgiven. In Jesus, we have new life.
Brothers and Sisters, you have heard God’s holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you? We do.

Prayers of the People Lord of light, who created the heavens and earth, prepare our hearts this New Year to receive you anew, and grant that we may rest in the comfort you offer. For this, O Lord, we pray:
Lord, hear our prayer.God of mercy, faithful to the faithless, grant peace and hope to the downtrodden and oppressed, and use us to effect justice in our broken world. For this, O Lord, we pray:
Lord, hear our prayer.Great Physician, Comforter of the nations, provide healing and tender care to the lonely and afflicted, and help us better care for those in need. For this, O Lord, we pray:
Lord, hear our prayer.Jesus Christ, whom the prophets foretold, deliver us from selfishness, fear and insularity, and give us hearts that move toward brokenness and hands of service. For this, O Lord, we pray:
Lord, hear our prayer.Holy Spirit, sustainer of the church, move in the hearts and minds of our brothers and sisters, and inspire us to be messengers of your truth and love. For this, O Lord, we pray:
Lord, hear our prayer. And for what else should we pray?
Members of the congregation may add their own intercessions at this time, ending with, “For this, O Lord, we pray” and all responding, “Lord, hear our prayer.”
11
The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

God Strengthens Us
Confession of Faith - from John 1What do we believe about the coming of Jesus Christ into the world?
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
God Speaks To Us
Sermon Text - Isaiah 9: 2-7 2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. 3 You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. 4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. 5 For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Sanctus
He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

Doxology
Prayer for those searching for truthLord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.
Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.
Prayer for those struggling with sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, thetrue and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. Amen.
Prayer of commitmentLord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit.Amen.
Prayers for Reflection
Words of InstitutionWe break bread in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and proclaim the mystery of the faith:
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us;Therefore, let us keep the feast.

It’s a simple commitment- just pick a nearby location and eat lunch with some other folks on a Sunday after church. We have a need for hosts in the coming new year. Please contact Dan Adamson or Jenny Avila if you would be willing to serve the church in this way.
