By Elsa Maxey Even though you were not
driving your vehicle when it was caught on camera taking a red light, if you own it, the ticket and responsibility for paying it is yours. That’s one of the flaws that Capt. H.F. Van Der Grinten dislikes most about the red light camera operations in Sugar Land. Capt. Van, who lives in New Territory, is the founder of the Houston Coalition to Ban Red Light Cameras. He also backs non-payment of a red light camera ticket fine saying that paying it is “virtually voluntary. “ But is it?
“The city works with a collection agency for the collection of past due violations,” said Sugar Land spokesperson Doug Adolph. He also reports 87,569 violations year- to-date with an 80 percent collection rate for each at $75 a pop, a civil and not a criminal fine, he said. “This collection rate is consistent with previous years.”
Capt. Van maintains that motor vehicle registrations will not be denied due to outstanding red light cam fines. Sugar Land also does “not participate in the registration

would feel morally obliged to pay the fine,” said Capt. Van in prepared statements.
He’s now on a campaign to collect signatures on a petition to place the red light matter on a ballot allowing Sugar Land voters the say so on operating the cameras. Neighboring Houston did away with them in a referendum approved by its voters.

Van is that “the mailed violation notices state that failure to pay may result in a hold placed on your vehicle registration,” he said, calling it a false statement. But not intentionally paying for fines is what is called scofflaw, a disregard and contempt for the law. However, “If I received an RLC (red light camera) ticket in Sugar Land and I felt that I got caught fair and square, I

In what can only be described as a bungled trifecta, the county's latest three bank robberies may be related.
It all started on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 when two men robbed the Houston Community Bank located at 13811 FM 1092 near Houston Community college in Stafford. In that case the two entered the bank wielding pistols demanding money at about 2 in the afternoon.
According to Stafford police spokesman Raphael Virata, the men ran into the bank, one jumped the counter and began to load cash into a bag from a teller’s drawer while the other lurked in the lobby. As the counter-jumper was loading his loot into his bag, many of the bank employees escaped out the back door of the building to wait for police.
The two crooks fled out the front door and left the scene
in a white Suburban that had been reported stolen out of Montgomery County. Virata said the getaway car was found just blocks away, abandoned behind some trees on Cash Road.
Interestingly pink paint splatters were all over the inside of the Suburban's windows. Virata said the red/pink dye was an
indication that the dye pack in the stolen money had exploded inside the vehicle. The Suburban and some cash were recovered by
police and FBI agents. The next bank robbery pulled
by two men who very much resemble the Stafford duo was on the following Wednesday near Sugar Land. Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel said at 9:03 a.m. Wednesday, morning, Nov. 28, 2012, deputies responded to a robbery call at the Chase Bank, located in the 5800 block of New Territory Boulevard in the New

residents probably know that Segments C and D of the Grand Parkway are each primarily located within their county. But what they may not know is that a public workshop on Segment C is about to take place. The Grand Parkway Association and TxDOT will present the workshop this Thursday, December 6, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m, at the George Ranch
High School. It will be about the schematics and the findings of a final environmental impact statement for Segment C. The workshop is intended to be an open house style type of meeting, which means there will be no formal presentations.
Essentially, the public workshop will detail plans for the segment’s proposed construction from US 59 to SH 288 in Fort Bend and Brazoria Counties. As proposed, the project consists of the construction of

Back in September a Telfair family was terrorized and held hostage by armed intruders; one suspect has been arrested.
On Monday night, September 24, 2012, shortly before 10 p.m., a family residing at a home on Baldwin Crossing in the Telfair subdivision answered a knock at the front door. When the resident opened the door for a purported pizza delivery man, the house was stormed by pistol wielding men.
During the home invasion, the 53 year old woman of the home was beaten in the head. According to police, her injuries were not life threatening, however she was transported to a Houston hospital for treatment.
During the intrusion the suspects took televisions, cash, jewelry, phones, and the family’s 2003 Toyota Camry. According to police, the family has business interests in the metro Houston area. The suspects were all described as males with bandanas covering their faces, armed with handguns, driving a silver Toyota.

the men pistol whipped the woman.” Adolph said, “The suspects left with a large amount of cash, electronics and the woman's 2003 Toyota Camry. The vehicle was later recovered by police in Houston.”
Sugar Land's investigation has led to the arrest of Aaron Nathaniel Reyes, 18, of Houston, on Oct. 30. He has been charged with aggravated assault. Police continue to search for Molina and the two other men.
Anyone with information should call the Sugar Land Police Department at (281) 275-2540 or Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at (281) 342-TIPS (8477).

'Tis the season for gift giving and the City of Sugar Land is giving taxpayers an early present--more than $85,000 in savings from energy efficiency improvements to city facilities. The savings exceeded the City's earlier projections by almost $20,000.
In 2010, Sugar Land was awarded a $780,000 grant from the Department of Energy. The money was part of a $2.7 billion block grant program, funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to encourage communities to reduce fossil
fuel dependency and convert to energy-efficient technologies.
McKinstry Essintion, Inc. was hired to design and construct improvements that primarily included interior and exterior lighting changes at nine of the City's largest facilities as well as building automation enhancements at Sugar Land's police and municipal courts facility. The work was completed in 2011.
"The grant money allowed us to change out the interior and exterior light bulbs and ballasts in our larger facilities and it made a substantial difference," said Mike Leech, Assistant Public Works
City of Sugar Land lightens load on taxpayers with energy savings
Director. "It sounds very simple and basic but we are seeing just how far lighting technology has come in terms of energy consumption."
In addition, Leech said, McKinstry installed a targeted temperature control system that monitors all of the larger H-VAC systems in order to make sure that they are functioning at optimum energy efficiency.
"The system can adjust the temperature inside the facilities in off-peak hours so we aren't running the system when no one is in the building," Leech

Segment C will be a 26-mile, four-lane, controlled access toll road that is for enhancing mobility in this area. It will have frontage roads from US 59 to SH 288 through the two affected counties.

“Show Me City” successfully teams up to "Stuff the Squad Car"Thanks to the generosity
of Missouri City residents, staff, churches and community groups, the 4th annual “Operation Thanksgiving—Stuff-the-Squad Car” greatly exceeded its goal of filling 15 police cars with food and nonperishable items to assist area families in need. Additionally, 11 barrels that had been placed at several city facilities were filled to the brim with donations.
All city departments collaborated to sponsor the Nov. 17 charitable event that was held in the parking lot of Public Safety Headquarters on Cartwright Road. Dozens of residents dropped off carloads of nonperishable items throughout the morning and received help unloading the goodies from police officers and volunteer groups. Donations were distributed to three area churches—Second Mile Mission Center, Bethel Ministries and the Powerhouse of Love.
“Knowing that volunteers from the community and that the City responded like they did is really

touching,” said Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald. “I think we are in lean times, and I’m thankful to live in a City where concerned citizens and the church community volunteer of their time to make other people happy.”
Ulises Duran, a manager with Classic Chevrolet, brought donations that the car dealership gathered from employees and the community. “This project is wonderful,” he said. “It is a chance to give back to the community and also teaches
our kids to be part of it.”Shirley Bellard, of the
Powerhouse of Love, said the group enjoys reaching out to the community. “This is our second year to volunteer,” she said. “Our outreach group meets once a month to organize projects that give back to the community.”
Joe Torres, whose father pastors Bethel Ministries, said: “We have a food program and serve about 500 families every week. We are glad to help those less fortunate.”

Bev’s BurnerSome’s Hot, Some’s Not!
The search is on.....Bev’s Burner received a copy of a letter from a fan that had been sent to all board members. I would like to run it here as I totally agree with the letter writer.
Dear Sir/Madam,Since 1995 to the present,
there have been four superin-tendents of FBISD with only one, the esteemed Dr.. Betty Baitland, being selected for the position from within the District. FBISD spends what has to be an extreme amount of money on the search and then payouts upon the exiting of superintendents.
My question is this: Wouldn’t it be more prudent to use the money that is set aside for a nationwide search and then most likely a pay-out, on needs for teaching the kids, and hire from within the District?
FBISD has (including our current Acting Superintendent)
individuals who know the workings and personnel of this district from the inside out, someone who “gets” where the District has been and how far it has come. Why lose that perspective to a newcomer who has his/her own visions of where FBISD should go?
In my opinion, we just witnessed a grueling time in FBISD’s history with the pre-vious superintendent’s tenure. NEVER have I heard such a breath of relief from students, adults and the community as when he resigned. Morale was at it’s lowest during his “reign;” I hope and pray there is never a repeat of the likes of that era again.
As a taxpayer and parent, I want to see established talent and capability recognized.
Name withheld by request In an answering letter which
I was made privy to, board member/president(?) Susan Hohnbaum said, “As a board,
we felt this was the best route to take-to use a professional for a task none of us have ever undertaken.” Ms. Hohnbaum pointed out the search was about $30,000 which was not the cost of a first year teacher.
Our letter writer was cor-rect in mentioning that Dr. Betty Baitland was promoted from within and did work out wonderfully until some board members were elected that did the district a great disservice from which we are only now recovering. The back story was that a coach was “retired” because he let a student get injured which he was playing on his computer in his office. He and another disgruntled employee ran for the school board and only one won. He teamed up with a couple of other board members, some, led down the garden path, and some just wanted to make a name for themselves.
Many shameful things were done including hiring a lawyer whose claim to fame was he was caught washing his car and taking his child to the zoo during office hours when he was a Houston official. He was hired at a high price to find financial wrongdoings on the part of Ms. Baitland and he found nothing. As one board member famously shouted, “Is that all you got?!” By the way, his main office was a private post office box. I have no idea whose friend he was.
One of the most shame-ful things that was done hap-pened at the first meeting of the recently elected board. Lisa Richert engineered her elec-tion as president of the board and her first office act in the middle of the meeting was to order Dr.. Baitland to the end of the table from her usual place at the side of the board president. She was told to get her things and move to the very end of the board table. It was bad manners and something that could have been accom-plished in a much nice and less noticeable manner. However, it certainly showed Ms. Rickert’s intentions and her raising. There was an audible collec-tive intake of breath from the audience.
Board meetings became so contentious that campus cops had to guard the meetings. Not from Dr. Baitland or other offi-cials but from the audience which was ready to lynch Ms. Rickert. Needless to say, Ms. Rickert and others on the board were “one and gone,” a term used locally to indicate a one term situation,
Although Dr. Baitland agreed to stay on until a new superintendent was hired, that board was having none of that
and instead named a woman who was the new head of human resources to lead the district. It was a disaster.
She did the best she could to follow the edicts of the board president but there was such rancor and retaliations that the district has suffered for years. I would dare say there are still people in the district who are still mad about the inci-dent. I know I am and I don’t even work there. In any event, Dr. Jenney was hated from the beginning. Some because of the way Dr. Baitland was treated because she started as a teacher and came up through the ranks so she was “one of them” as far as the staff was concerned, and some because evidently Dr. Jenney had a per-sonality that rankled the rank and file.
Over the past 35 years, FBISD had a rather checked history of superintendents. The first superintendent I remem-ber was:• Lawrence Elkins, who
served for 10 years• Dr. Rodney LeBoeuf, 7
years• Dr. Raj K. Chopra, 3 years• Dr. Don W. Hooper, 7 years• Dr. Betty Baitland, 7 years• Dr. Manuela Pedraza, 1 year• Dr. Timothy R. Jenney, 6
yearsSo about every six or seven
years, it seems FBISD gets another superintendent. This may be healthy but I’m sure tired of paying off the depart-ing superintendents. I’m sure the taxpayers are too.
It’s about time we hire a superintendent with the pro-viso:
“If you leave on your own or we fire you, you take no sever-ance pay!” Of course we may not be able to hire a superinten-dent with that attitude.
I haven’t met the Acting Superintendent Michael McKie although he had indi-cated an interest in meeting all the media in FBISD. I’ll get around to it eventually. But from reports I hear, he is very qualified and generally liked.
Christmas notes ... About eight years old is the age where children start to not be fooled so much. Every time my grand-children find some presents I didn’t hide well enough before Christmas, I tell them they are for some poor children in the neighborhood. This year they found some and when I said they were for poor children, they started giggling. “BeBe
you always say that and they’re really for us.”

If you're ready you can go to Macy’s and write a present list letter to Santa Claus. You can also write a Christmas wish on your letter. Then just slip it through the mailbox.
Once my little brother got money inside of soap. So when you are done using it you get money. We were too impatient and I cut through the soap with my pocketknife, but sadly we only got one dollar.

Lowering High Cholesterol LevelsCholesterol is an important component for the body. It is made in the
liver. When too much bad cholesterol (called LDL) travels to the blood it may build up in the vessel walls causing hardening and narrowing that can limit proper blood flow. The increased LDL may increase the risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Other risk factors for high cholesterol levels include older age, male gender, post-menopausal women, and whether or not it runs in the family.
The goal of lowering cholesterol is to reduce the risk of heart disease. Lifestyle changes and medications are the main treatment methods. LDL can be lowered by changes that include increased exercise, reduced satu-rated fat, and limiting high cholesterol foods. Drugs called HMG-CoA Reductase inhibitors, such as Crestor, and Lipitor reduce the amount of cholesterol made in the liver. Another name for these drugs is statins. Drugs called Fibrates (Lopid, TriCor) work to decrease LDL levels and increase good cholesterol (HDL). Bile acid resins (Questran, Welchol) work to decrease the amount of fat that is absorbed into the body, but it may cause constipation. Ezetimibe (Zetia) inhibits cholesterol absorption from food. Niacin (Niaspan, Niacor) helps increase HDL and lower LDL. A combination of medications is sometimes recommended.

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has new hybrid operating room
New Hybrid Operating Room Technology
Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has completed construction on a new hybrid operating room that is the first of its kind in the nation. The hybrid OR incorporates advanced technologies with traditional surgery capabilities to offer patients a new range of diagnostic and treatment procedures that can streamline care, reduce recovery time and complications.
Methodist’s new hybrid OR is the first in the United States that combines the most advanced operating table created by Maquet, a German company specializing in OR equipment, integrated with the latest C-arm robotic system for angiography from Siemens Healthcare, one of the world’s largest suppliers of imaging equipment. This combination of technologies allows patients to be diagnosed and treated more rapidly and with better outcomes for a range of conditions, including vascular, cardiac, orthopedic and neurological. In addition,
specialists from multiple disciplines can now work together more collaboratively.
According to Chris Siebenaler, Chief Executive Officer at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, “This new hybrid OR is a great example of how we are bringing leading medical innovations to our region. The safety and
speed of this technology enables our skilled surgeons to provide more advanced care for patients, especially those requiring more complicated treatments.”
For more information on Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, visit MethodistSugarLand.com or Facebook.com/MethodistSugarLand.

What’s up everyone? Lets get our Christmas on! Now who wants some presents? Y’all better start thinking about what you want before Christmas. You better hurry it's in 20 days.
doesn’t work just stick it on with some tape. Take one piece on each day. Then when you get to 1… It’s Christmas!
That’s all for this week goodbye.

Dear Editor,
Did you know that there is NO risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke that contains over 7,000 chemicals of which hundreds are toxic? (Surgeon General's Report 2010) And did you know that food service workers are 50% more likely to die from lung cancer than the general public? (Surgeon General's Report 2004) And that smoking costs Texas health care over $5.83 billion every year? (Tobacco Free Kids Campaign, March 2012) Did you know that you can help reduce the dangers of secondhand smoke inside public places in Stafford?
Here's how: attend the public hearing at Stafford City Hall, 2610 S. Main St. on Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. City council members need to hear from Stafford residents especially. So this is your chance to make a difference in
the health of your family and friends. People's jobs should not give them heart disease, emphysema, cancer and many other health problems that are caused by secondhand smoke. Everyone's health matters whether you work in a restaurant or a bar. How can a business suffer that cares about the lives of their customers and employees?
As a high school senior who has attended Stafford schools for nearly 10 years, this is very simple to me. We expect businesses to provide safe food, pure water, and a safe environment. Safe indoor air is expected as well.
Hope to see you at the council meeting on Dec. 12. Together we can help make Stafford a healthier place to live and do business.
Everyone deserves to breathe safe air.

Stafford Municipal School District high school senior urges Stafford residents to attend public hearing
Dear Editor,
The kind of rhetoric Barbara Carlson is saying is fear mongering, pure and simple.
And when people start to do this, it opens the way for tyrants to take over, and civil discourse to escalate to civil conflict, and worse.
History is full of examples. Read it sometime, it's quite fascinating.
Every time a Democrat is elected president, gun sales strongly increase, nothing new.

FOOT FACTSby Dr. Eric Tepper
BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS
Many of the trendy choices in teenage footwear will result in foot, knee, and back pain in a teen’s future. Shoes and boots with little or no heel and rubber soles provide no stability for a teen’s growing feet. Because foot bones continue to grow through adolescence, they are still soft and can be forced into unnatural shapes. If the shoes do not offer sufficient support, the arches, muscles, and ligaments become stressed and strained. To alleviate the possible negative effects, teenagers should wear shoes in a natural, breathable fabric with a strap, Velcro, or laces to hold them on; small heels; and deep toe-boxes. Smart shoe choices for teenagers can prevent a lifetime of pain from foot problems.
Today’s informative column has been brought to you as a public service. We are to the foot what a dentist is to the mouth or an ophthalmologist to the eye - a specialist who has undergone lengthy and thorough study to become uniquely well-qualified to treat a specific part of the body. You’ll receive the highest quality medical care coupled with the personal attention you expect and deserve. Our approach is conservative, gentle, and caring at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. We welcome your call for family foot care at 281-980-3668. Don't take your feet for granted - call us for an appointment. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment.
HINT: If your teen insists on wearing “bad” shoes, encourage the use of simple foot orthotics.

said. "And then it is smart enough to adjust the temperature 30 minutes before people get to work to make sure it is sufficiently cool inside."
The performance contract with McKinstry guarantees a 100 percent return on the City's investment over 15 years. If Sugar Land does not realize $64,102 in annual savings each year for the next 15 years, the
contractor must reimburse the City for the shortage or replace the necessary equipment to meet the performance requirements.
"Going forward, as equipment wears out, we’re going to get more energy efficient systems," Leech said. "This is how we are going to do business from now on because we want our return on investment to be as high as possible so we'll put in green equipment whenever we can."

Really!
Captain sails course to ban Sugar Land’s red light cams with camerasCAPTAIN, continued from page 1
Capt. Van’s other reasons for refusing to pay these fines is the assertion that red light cameras are unfair because drivers are forced to guess the time length of the yellow light. Also, if the violation was for a rolling stop for a right turn on a red light, “I would feel justified in paying a fine of only $7.50 because I have proof that this violation is only one tenth as serious as a straight through violation and the fine should reflect the seriousness of the violation.” Capt. Van said that since the city will not accept the reduced fine “I would pay nothing.” By the way, he reports
that 60 percent of the citations are issued for rolling stops.
Accounts indicate that 24 states and the District of Columbia currently use red light cameras. A reported claim against their use is that “The United States Department of Transportation and the states are conspiring to make it a civil crime so they can eliminate due process.”
Of the money Sugar Land generates from operating the red light cameras, installed for public safety, it is split between the state and a special city account, states Adolph.
He said it funds traffic safety programs, intersection improvements, public safety
programs and traffic enforcement, including the Safe Light Sugar Land initiative.
Captain Van’s petition to place the red light camera operation as a public referendum in Sugar
Land has now reached 971 of the 2,600 signatures needed. “Those signatures have been verified by the Voter Database Search as valid Sugar Land resident voters,” he said.

Territory subdivision. He said that two armed men
entered the bank with bandanas covering their faces dressed in baggy suits and floppy brimmed hats. He described the suspects as white males, one being about 6’1” to 6’3”. The other suspect is about 5’9”, he said. In this incident as in the Stafford robbery, many bank employees were able to escape out the back door of the bank; with no one to give the gun wielding crooks any cash, they left this bank empty handed. The getaway vehicle was identified as light-colored Chevrolet Impala.
At press time the last reported bank robbery believed to be attributed to this pair was reported on Friday, November 30, 2012, at 1:53 in the afternoon. In this robbery just one of the duo walked into the Capital One Bank in the 11500 block of Highway 6 S near the Woodbridge subdivision wielding his gun, again jumping the counter and demanding cash.
Haenel said provided
surveillance photos showed a lone suspect entering the bank wearing a suit, sunglasses, a black or dark blue bandana and a floppy hat. Haenel described him as as a light-complected male. He was waving a gun at the tellers and provided them with a black or gray bag to fill with cash. Responding law enforcement personnel swarmed the area. During the ensuing search evidence relating to the robbery was recovered. No robberies have been reported since last Friday.
Investigators from the Stafford Police Department, the Fort Bend Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI are working together on these cases.
Information which leads to the apprehension and or conviction of the suspect(s) involved could earn a reward of up to $5,000 from Crime Stoppers. At this point, area residents are more familiar with the completed Segment D of the Grand Parkway, which is the section from US 59 to IH 10. It reportedly has 9 signalized intersections. The main lanes of
this segment were constructed by TxDOT, also in conjunction with Fort Bend County for the area that was more commonly referred to as SH 99. Segment D is 17.4 miles and recent work on this roadway includes improvements such as the construction of tolling overpasses currently underway.

Stafford celebrates 15th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony
By Karen Daniels
As the Stafford High School and Middle School choirs sang festive songs, parents and citizens gathered for the annual tree lighting ceremony held last Thursday at the Stafford Centre. The evening had just enough crispness in the air to warrant holiday sweaters and jackets. Part holiday celebration, part patriotic recognition, the ROTC posted colors, led the audience in the pledge of allegiance, before the choir sang a moving rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner.
Mayor Scarcella, wearing a red and green Gatsby hat, said a few words welcoming the crowd. Beside him, a large wrapped box with a handle and a decorative bow. After the countdown, the Mayor pulled
the handle, and without any hitch the entire Stafford Centre was lit up in bright, white lights, as a collected gasp from the audience could be heard.
The choir began Here Comes Santa Claus as the Stafford Fire Department, with their lights and sirens ringing, arrived on the scene
with a very important person. From the top of the fire truck, Santa Claus waved to the crowd, their bright reds matching perfectly. Everyone was invited inside for snacks and refreshments and more holiday singing. Excited kids stood in line to meet Santa as their parent's snapped this year's holiday photo.
The City of Stafford has held the tree-lighting ceremony for the past 15 years (8 at the Stafford Center, 7 at City Hall). Mayor Scarcella feels it's important for a city to be there for citizens when things are good and bad. After Ike, the Stafford Centre opened their doors for those who were temporarily displaced. "It's wonderful to utilize the city equipment and facilities for the children and their families."
Set for December 7 and 8, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., candlelight tour Fri. night 6-9 p.m.The tour will feature six distinctive homes in Lake Pointe, Sweetwater, Oaks of Alcorn, Lakes of Williams Ranch and Sienna Plantation. Tickets are available for $25 at Fort Bend County Kroger and Randalls stores, the Sienna Plantation HomeFinder Center, at the door, and online at www.cafb.org. Shown (L to R) are: Lin Wooten, Tracy Pipes (back) and Diana Null. For more info 281-344-5100.
CASA Christmas Home Tour this weekend
By Karen Daniels
The City of Meadows Place has an interesting format during their monthly City Council meetings. At the end of each meeting, the floor is opened to audience members who wish to voice their thoughts - for three minutes. Because their council meetings are well attended by residents, this can attract a lot of comments. But it's not all complaints. Some people use this time to commend the City for a job well done.
At the November meeting, two agenda items were discussed that prompted many audience members to speak. The first topic was about the streets shifting and heaving due to last summer's drought and this fall's rain shortage.
Mayor Jessup is currently looking into ways to raise funds to fix the roads. One way, he suggested, was to add a "Road Use Fee" of approximately 10% onto the current garbage collection which is $18.10 per month. With a potential new revenue of $1.81, in one year's time approximately $33,600 would be available for road services.
Mayor Jessup said that he wants the public's input on this matter and a public hearing would be scheduled next year when the City and Council have more information gathered.
Of the two people who spoke about this during the audience comments time, one was a civil engineer who praised the City for recognizing the streets need attention, but warned that $33,600 would not be enough money.
The second citizen to speak suggested that the City aggressively seek renters for the shopping strip located at West Airport and Kirkwood.
The second topic was the lack of a Code Enforcement officer. The City has posted the job and so far has received 17 applications. They plan
Meadows Place meetings allow time for audience comments to start interviewing in December to fill the job.
Until the position is filled, and depending on the gravity of the situation, either the police department or public works will handle all calls
and complaints. An audience member asked why this position wasn't filled sooner. The Mayor explained that the prior Code Enforcer left the job suddenly, not giving the City much time to react.
In the spirit of the holiday season, the Austin High School Orchestra will present its Holiday Concert on Thursday, December 6, at 7:00 pm in the school’s auditorium, 3434 Pheasant Creek Drive, Sugar Land.
Directed by Carolyn Vandiver and John Law, the concert will feature a medley of holiday songs and moving renditions of “Overture to Messiah” by Handel, “Shabbat Shalom” by Susan C. Brown and “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” by Tchaikovsky.
Refreshments will be sold prior to the concert, beginning at 6:30 pm and during intermission. The event is free.
The concert is made possible, in part, by funding provided by Fort Bend ISD and the Austin High Orchestra Booster Club. All proceeds from the event will support Austin’s orchestra program, which currently has 216 members enrolled
in six orchestras, making it the largest school orchestra program in FBISD. Each orchestra level will be represented at the concert.
The AHS orchestra program has become known for its tradition of bringing quality music to the community – and has earned several top awards, including:
• Commended Winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Orchestra Honors project – AHS Symphony String Orchestra, directed by Carolyn Vandiver; and
• Texas Music Educators Association String Honor Orchestra Finalist, 2012-2013 – AHS Camerata String Orchestra

What Are Real Ear Computer Measurements?
Real Ear Computer Measurement technology allows an audiologist to measure the sound that the hearing aid is amplifying while in a patient’s ear. By
using a computer and a tiny microphone placed within the ear canal, sound is measured while the hearing aid is activated. While the microphone measures sound being amplified by the hearing aid, adjustments can be made to make sure the aid is programmed correctly. This creates precise adjustments for individual hearing losses as well as acoustic differences due to different sized and shaped ear canals. By obtaining these physical measurements, the effectiveness of the hearing aid settings can be verified. This creates an accurate fitting and subsequently improved hearing. These measurements are visible on the computer screen so that the patient can see the results as changes are being made.
If you would like additional information about this technology, please contact us at Advanced Hearing Center, 281-491-0200.

Should a repair facility provide me with a loaner vehicle?
A high-quality shop will not provide
a loaner, but will offer to arrange a rental vehicle if you require one. The cost is $25-$35 per day and there is usually no out-of-pocket expense if the cost of the rental remains within the amount stated in your insurance policy. The policy does not pay for additional insurance coverage offered by the rental company. If the repair shop offers you a loaner and can be absorbed in this cost, they have to recover it somewhere. Are they cutting corners on your repair or charging for work not performed? Beware of the “free loaner”.

I’m thinking about using a DIY kit to refinish my tub. What results should I expect?
Do-it-yourself bathtub refinishing kits are marketed at home improvement centers as an easy way to fix a worn or damaged bathtub. Unfortunately, these kits more often than not lead to
disappointing results and eventual professional refinishing. We at Miracle Method know, as nearly 20% of the bathtubs we are re-doing are an amateur attempt at tub refinishing.
DIY kits use a hydrofluoric acid wash to etch the porcelain tub surface to help the new epoxy stick. Hydrofluoric acid etching is not only old technology, but can be dangerous. While epoxy is durable, it chips easily and eventually turns yellow. This method also often leads to eventual peeling of the new surface.
Miracle Method will professionally repair and refinish your tub to a glossy like-new look and feel. Our process includes removing the existing caulk, a thorough two step cleaning of the tub, and repairing any chips. Miracle Method’s non-acid MM-4 bonding agent will ensure the new coats of high tech acrylic urethane will adhere and provide an even surface, and a final buffing and polishing will make your tub shine like it did the day it was installed.
Miracle Method offers a five year warranty – that’s something you won’t find with a DIY kit!

Is there anything I can do to reduce my high monthly office expense?
This is a great question right in line with our trying economic times. ProStar Communications has an answer for reducing that large monthly expense for office space. If you have the type of business where you deal with your customers over the telephone instead of face-to-face, then a VIRTUAL OFFICE is
the answer for you. With a virtual office, you can work from anywhere…..even from home. You can have your own telephone number with customized automated attendant and voice mail box greetings. There are other great features like having your voice mail messages sent to your cell phone, BlackBerry or E-Mail. You can have a telephone set at your house or work on a laptop Softphone anywhere there is internet. And the best part is your customers will never know if you are at an office, at your home or in a hotel on vacation.
If you need office space to see clients, but want to downsize then send most of your employees home. With the Panasonic IP telephone equipment, we recently took a company with 20 employees that did a majority of their business over the telephone and set up 15 of them at home. This drastically reduced the company’s monthly expense for office space. Incoming calls can be answered at the main office or a remote site and transferred between locations seamlessly and the caller never knows.
ProStar Communications and Panasonic have many more solutions for your office communication needs. ProStar is an authorized Panasonic dealer serving the Fort Bend and Houston area since 1992. Please call us at 281.265.3500 for a free consultation to discuss your needs for today and into the future.

At Classic Chevrolet we always get ask the question “What are the Benefits of Nitrogen in Tires”
Compressed nitrogen has long been used to inflate the tires of race cars and aircraft. Regular air is approximately 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and 1 percent water vapor. The oxygen and water vapor can degrade tires and wheels, shortening tire life. Nitrogen
inflation is now available from many commercial and passenger car dealers.
Slower Inflation Pressure Loss - A tire inflated with regular compressed air will lose about one and a half to two psi of pressure per month. Most of the pressure loss is due to oxygen molecules permeating through the tire rubber. Replacing the air with 95 to 98 percent nitrogen reduces the pressure loss to less than one-half psi per month. Since many drivers do not regularly check their air pressure, nitrogen inflation will allow their tires to maintain proper inflation levels longer. The major benefit of properly inflated tires is optimum
Oxygen can cause oxidation of tire rubber and corrosion of metal and alloy wheels. The water vapor in air can accelerate these processes, especially under pressure like the compressed air in a tire. The corrosive effects of both oxygen and water vapor are multiplied when a tire overheats due to under-inflation. Nitrogen is an inert gas and will not cause corrosion or rust. Nitrogen also will not degrade the seals in air valves, further preventing pressure loss.
Improved Tire Life - Using nitrogen to pressurize tires has benefits over regular air for tire longevity. The greatest threats to tire life are heat and uneven tread wear. Both of these result from improper tire pressure; using nitrogen will maintain a more even tire pressure over the life of a tire. Also, the rubber inner lining of a tire will degrade over time in an air environment. As the rubber lining degrades, air pressure will be lost faster, accelerating the effects of under-pressurization. Nitrogen will not cause the inner lining of a tire to degrade, extending its useful life. According to the Innovative Balancing website, inflating tires with nitrogen can extend tire life up to 25 percent.
Classic Chevrolet Nitrogen for Life - Classic Chevrolet will install Nitrogen in your tires for $39.95 for life. That means when you purchase Nitrogen for your Vehicle, all of your tires that you purchase from Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land for the life of that vehicle we will put nitrogen in them for free.

I’ve heard that video on my website will improve my search engine rankings. Is this true? How do I start?
It is true. Google especially loves video and for other search engines, it’s an element that positively impacts website exposure.
So, let’s get started. The first step for any video project is to determine your target audience and the effect you want when someone sees the video. Do you want to be called for more information or do you want the audience to feel more comfortable about your product or service? Want the viewer to visit your business? Your trade show? Invest money in your business, or order products from your web site?
The video needs to speak directly to particular interests and needs with a tailor made message. And for that, you’ll need a script. “If it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage,” goes the old saying.
We can write a script for your approval that reflects what you want to say about your business, reaches your target audience and creates the effect you desire. Then, we’ll schedule a video shoot, edit the footage, and do voice-over narration with music and titles to create a custom produced project that shows off your business to potential customers and clients.
At Star Digital Studios, we handle all aspects of production from script writing to post-production editing and we do compression for website upload. Call us at 281 690-4280 for a free consultation.

FORT BEND DRIVING SCHOOL
Serving the students ofFort Bend for over 25 years
Thank you, Fort Bend Star loyal readers, for the highest number of calls that I have received so far in support of my column content since I began my column and after your
reading the letter to the editor. The love and tolerance from the Left was oozing while the devastating direction unions have taken was totally missed by the disgruntled reader. How
We must stop amnesty and continue to educate the misinformed
grossly inaccurate to align me to the Nazi Party, my indictment of organized labor, my favorite snacks are supposedly Hostess products (I don’t even know what a Devil Dog is), that I support Hostess because, I guess, I also support Bain Capital, that I drive a (Honda) gas guzzler and that my source is Rush. Oh, how the misinformed wander in their rebuttal and refuse to bring substance to the debate.
So not only are certified, skilled professionals only born from a union, but it’s perfectly acceptable that union dues are spent on political power and candidate gain when all union members are NOT in agreement with how union dues are allocated. The U.S. is supposedly on track to becoming the biggest oil exporter—even with strict EPA regulations and moratoriums that have been inflicted on the oil companies. Wait, aren’t the oil companies the greedy, bad guys?
The feedback that I have consistently received is “the fair and balanced approach” that Bev’s and my opposing columns that The Star offers all of its readers—which is unmatched with any other paper—and that the Conservative voice is truly represented in Fort Bend County.
Here’s a no-brainer: If one doesn’t want to read the Conservative column - one that is researched extensively each week—a logical option is to simply turn the page. Why does the Liberal have to personally attack while he is ignorantly spouting? Why does the Liberal argue that it has to be all or nothing: You either accept what I am throwing down your throat or I need to stifle your voice? It’s either unions or utter chaos. Turn the darn page if you’re upset, just like Conservatives flip the channel when MSNBC comes on and our stomachs start to churn. This disgruntled reader could learn quite a bit if he’d pick up the book “Face It, We’re Broken.” Oh, heck, the Conservatives will pray for the parrot this week.
So what is wrong with Arizona when Arizona law is based on federal immigration laws? Why are Republicans again expected to cross the aisle—what’s called a compromise—on illegal immigration? The Left is pushing for another amnesty when they had already left us with empty promises if enacted that the southern border would be made secure? Are we really going to fall for that fallacy again?
Before amnesty can be addressed, we, as a country, deserve our southern border to be secure. There is no other country that is more porous than ours. With amnesty comes an even bigger flow of illegal crossings. Why is Congress unwilling to admit that terrorists are also crossing our porous southern border, destroying private property and killing innocent Americans?
Do we no longer value American lives and put ones who are breaking our laws above fellow Americans? Do we no longer have a conscience that we are rewarding illegal perpetrators above fellow law-abiding American citizens?
Why is Congress allowing Social Security to go bankrupt while we have paid in for decades while allowing illegals to collect without contributing a dime? Until Congress has “skin in the game,” they will continue this inexcusable fiscal irresponsibility with The Social Security Trust Fund.
Why can’t Congress admit that we are endangering fellow Americans with national security issues with our porous borders? When is Congress going to stand up to the plate and admit that they have made a gross mistake for decades and that the illegal immigrant population is financially draining us and we must enforce our laws when our country is in fiscal crisis? When did the quota system get tossed out the window? There were very logical reasons for quotas given to each country.
The Conservative Voice
By Barbara J. Carlson
When did we deviate from allowing people into our country who are educated and knew the English language?
When did Congress say that it was okay to come to our country, take our jobs, be allowed to send money home without being taxed, not wanting to assimilate into our culture with the intention to return home someday? When did Congress stop asking the tough questions if one was coming to our country to truly become a part of the greatest country in the world or simply to use us as a pawn with the intention to return home someday? What does that say about us as the leader of the free world? What does that say to our forefathers who sacrificed much more than any of us to build a nation that they were so proud of?
We have lost what we stand for as the greatest country in the world. We have lost what it means to “be an American” and have succumbed to the bully.
Yes, my Liberal friend, we are “stuck” with ones that we are sending back to Washington—and not to our liking. Many of us are ready for Boehner to resign. It is time that we demand Congress make the tough decisions even if they’re afraid that they may not be re-elected in another two or four years or try to slip another pay raise under America’s radar.
We cannot afford another downgrade—every one that has occurred under this sitting president. We must get our financial feet back on stable ground and address the tough issues.
Perhaps we should tax all outgoing Western Union transactions 91%, you know, like what Paul Krugman is suggesting for the top 2%. How about everyone pay “their fair share”?
God bless our great country. God bless Israel.

Often crime victims are caught so off guard or so fearful for their life they don't get to react like they would like to. Last week a man shopping in Stafford got in a lick for the good guys.
After shopping at a Stafford store the man returned to his vehicle and found a crook sitting in his driver’s seat looting his truck. Incensed, the truck owner forced the suspect to unload his pockets, he only had $5, so the victim took it
as a down payment for the damage he caused by punching the lock on his truck door. It appears that once the two came to an understanding on who the truck belonged to, the owner ordered the crook out of his driver’s seat. The crook fled in a silver Nissan along with two other co-conspirators.
Stafford police took a burglary of a motor vehicle report. The suspect was described as a black male over 6' tall, in his mid 20’s. He was covered with facial tattoos including

Sugar Land Police were called to a major accident last Thursday, about 3:50 p.m. A car traveling westbound, the wrong way, on Lexington Avenue near Colonist Park Street hit a Fort Bend county ambulance traveling eastbound.
Sugar Land Police spokesman Doug Adolph said, “The ambulance driver saw the vehicle going the
wrong way on Lexington, so the EMS(ambulance) unit activated its emergency lights and positioned the ambulance in front of the oncoming vehicle.” Adolph said the car did not stop and struck the ambulance.
He said that the driver of the car was disoriented and transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Since the accident it has been determined that the accident was the result of a medical issue.

Chrishonta Richard, 17, and Angelic Harris, 18, both of Houston, were arrested for a pepper spray attack in a Target parking lot
on November 12. Both were charged with
aggravated robbery and are being held in the Fort Bend County jail with bonds of $75,000 each. The investigation is ongoing, and police anticipate further arrests.
Richard and Harris confessed to attacking and robbing two women who were loading merchandise into the trunk of their vehicle at 8:45 p.m. An elderly woman was also punched, and her purse was stolen.
A review of surveillance video inside Target helped identify Richard and Harris.
They left the crime scene in a black, four-door passenger vehicle driven by a black man. Police were able to recover images of the vehicle and a license plate number from license plate recognition (LPR) cameras
located on Town Center
Boulevard South near the AMC Theater.
The vehicle's license plate number was DK2 B894. There
was also a Houston Texans sticker on the rear window.
For the last four years, Sugar Land Police have operated a pilot project using LPR systems. Five mobile systems were installed on police vehicles, and three "fixed" systems were installed at locations in the Town Square/First Colony Mall area. The LPR camera systems are valuable tools to help identify vehicles used in the commission of crimes.
An expansion of the LPR system is currently being considered at major entrances and exits to Sugar Land.
Anyone with information about other suspects in the Target attack should call the Sugar Land Police Department at (281) 275-2540 or Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at (281) 342-TIPS (8477).

Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel said, “Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers, Inc. will pay a cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects in a theft case at a Katy-area sports store.”
The theft at The Sports Authority sporting goods store in the 5400 block of State 99 (The Grand Parkway) occurred Wednesday, Nov. 21, about 8:30 p.m. Haenel said store officials told responding deputies that a lone suspect entered the store and grabbed about 40 licensed sports jerseys, turned and ran out of the store to a waiting getaway vehicle.
The suspect was described as a black male with short black hair, wearing a blue/gray striped shirt, blue jeans and brown shoes. The vehicle is an older model white Ford Taurus with paper license plates.
Officials believe this same suspect and vehicle were involved in other thefts in the Houston area.
Information which leads to the apprehension and filing of charges on the suspects involved could earn a cash reward.

Compliance with posted speed limits improved more than 16 percent during the first two years of the Sugar Land Police Department's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP).
The enforcement initiative - funded with an $85,251 grant from the Texas Department of Transportation - also resulted in a 10 percent reduction in accidents since Oct. 1, 2010.
The grant period is from Oct. 1, 2010, through Sept. 30, 2013. The STEP grant provides overtime to staff increased traffic enforcement in targeted areas, an extra resource that does not affect SLPD's normal operations.
Speeding continues to be the number one factor contributing to accidents within Sugar Land, accounting for 52 percent of all crashes that occurred in October 2012.
The police department uses crash data, speed surveys and information supplied by residents to identify those areas where additional enforcement is needed.
SLPD speed surveys conducted prior to the STEP grant indicated only 19 percent of drivers were obeying posted speed limits at some of the STEP grant's targeted intersections, and compliance was below 50 percent at every targeted location.

Each year, Fort Bend ISD students and staff pay tribute to our U.S. veterans for their dedicated and loyal service to our country. Schools host breakfasts, luncheons, parades and presentations honoring the lives and service of all the great men and women who have served in the U.S. military or are currently serving.
Sienna Crossing Elementary School was among FBISD campuses to celebrate
Veterans’ Day. Some of their activities included patriotic songs performed by the third-grade choir, a parade of poster tributes and a special luncheon for families and their veteran relatives.

Seniors Helping Seniors® In-Home Services - Who are you going to call?
Who do you call if you need someone, or a senior you love needs someone to drive them to the grocery store? Take them to a doctor’s appointment? Take care of a pet? Do some light housekeeping? Prepare a few meals? Or even to stay overnight?
Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home services is that one phone call to make.
The organization matches seniors who are in need of those home services with senior helpers who can provide them. Currently the organization has over 200 offices in 40 plus states including Hawaii. The Fort Bend Seniors Helping Seniors office opened its doors earlier this year and
already has a staff of qualified, compassionate senior care providers anxious to provide Fort Bend seniors the care they need to stay in their homes, live independently with dignity and respect. “It’s a win-win for everyone, according to Mike Alexander, Fort Bend Seniors Helping Seniors Director, those who give and those who receive learn from each other everyday – and all we hear is about how rewarding it is for both of them.” “There is a huge difference in the kind of home care you can receive from someone who really understands what your
life is like as a senior and the concerns seniors have and their need for independence.”
The rapidly growing population of seniors has combined with more and more seniors determined to remain independent in their own homes. “Seniors Helping Seniors is an alternative to being in a long-term care facility, said Mike Alexander.”
Seniors Helping Seniors services have affordable rates for those who need services.
For more information, please call Seniors Helping Seniors at 281 261-8107 and check the website at www.seniorshelpingseniors.com.
