and WeepDue to the unusually cold start to December, the annualBlock o Bucks will still go on as scheduled, but the kids do nothave to attend this Saturday mornings shopping. Te parents o children still have to attend, but with theextreme cold we made the decision that the kids will not berequired to show up, Jan Plant o the Soroptimists stressed.
Tat being said, its going to be a miserably cold dayor the collectors on Friday, but the Cottonwood Inn hasgraciously offered the use o their outdoor propane heaters, sothat should help out a bunch. Remember, your donation to the Block o Bucks will
be used strictly or winter clothing, so please dig a littleextra deeper this year as orecasters have been calling or atreacherous winter with colder-than-average temperaturescoupled with plenty o snow. We hope theyre wrong, but soar theyre spot on and then some.
Flu vaccine still available, protectyourself now before the holidays! Anyone can get the flu, but the risk o getting theflu is highest among children. Influenza can make somepeople much sicker than others. Tese people includeyoung children, older people, pregnant women, anyonewith certain health conditions, such as heart, lung, orkidney disease, or a weakened immune system. Flu vaccine is especially important or these people, and anyone in close contact with them. Te more peopleprotected by vaccination, the less chance this disease haso spreading to others, and influenza is now circulatingin Montana. Te Valley County Health Department has nasalflu vaccine or healthy people 2-49 years o age, whoare not pregnant, i you dont like needles. Te healthdepartments supply o nasal and injectable vaccine
is limited, so please call ahead to check availability at#228-6261. Te Glasgow Clinic has injectable vaccine availableor anyone 6 months o age and older. Please call #228-3400 to schedule a flu immunization with GlasgowClinic. ~ Happy Holidays from the Valley County HealthDepartment!

Overall hunter numbers and big-game harvests weredown at the Montana Fish, Wildlie & Parks Region 6 gamecheck station outside Havre during the eight weekends it wasopen this all. Hunter numbers were down 9 percent below those seenin 2012, and 35 percent below numbers seen in 2010, saidHavre-area Wildlie Biologist Scott Hemmer. Tere were atotal o 671 parti es and 1,443 hunters checked this year. Hemmer noted that the severe winter weather in 2010-11 resulted in decreased deer and antelope populationsthroughout most o the Region, and that was reflected at
the check station. In addition, there was high white-taileddeer mortality rom epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD)outbreaks in the eastern part o Region 6 in 2011, and in thewestern part o the Region earlier this year.
Due to these weather and disease events, antelope, mule deer, and white-tailed deer doe licenses have all beensignificantly reduced below historic levels, Hemmer said.Te combination o decreased game populations and eweravailable doe licenses are primary actors in the decreasednumber o hunters and harvest seen at the station this year. Te largest percentage decline in this years harvest waswith pronghorn antelope. Te number o harvested antelopechecked was down 67 percent rom last year and 93 percentbelow the long-term average.
Tere were only 27 antelope checked this year, and inthe past we would historically check 400-plus antelope in
a year, Hemmer said. Te drop in harvest concurred withhunter reports o ewer antelope observed. White-tailed deer harvest was also down significantly, and the number o white-tailed deer checked was down 57percent rom last year and 76 percent rom the long-termaverage. Mule deer harvest was down 15 percent rom last yearand 38 percent below the long-term average.

Te reports rom mule deer huntersat the check station indicated lower deer
numbers observed overall, but reports werevariable, Hemmer explained. Huntersin some hunting districts reported seeingsubstantially ewer deer than in past years, but in other areas hunters reported averageto above average deer numbers. Both muledeer and white-tailed deer were also morewidely dispersed this year due to mild allweather and excellent orage conditions, which resulted in ewer deer observed byhunters.
Elk harvest this year was up 46 percentrom last year, but was 2 percent belowthe long-term average. Te number o elkchecked was up substantially at the beginningo the big game season, but harvest appearedto slow toward the end o the season.
Most elk hunters reported seeing goodnumbers o animals, although some cow elkhunters reported encountering mostly bullelk, he said. Overall, weather conditions thishunting season were warmer with less snow, which may have reduced big game activityand reduced harvest. Te weather did resultin improved road conditions and hunteraccess in most areas. Te reported upland bird harvest wasdown this year in FWP Region 6. Above-average precipitation this spring and summer
resulted in increased vegetation heights andwider distribution o birds, which may have
limited hunter harvest.Hunters reported patchy upland bird
distribution, with increased bird densities inbetter habitat. Overall, bird hunter reports orpheasants and Hungarian partridge indicatedbird numbers comparable to last year, whilehunters reported seeing ewer sharp-tailedgrouse. Along those lines, the reported pheasantharvest was down 22 percent rom last yearand 35 percent rom the long-term average, and the Hungarian partridge harvest wasdown 14 percent rom last year and 45 percentrom the long-term average. Sharp-tailedgrouse harvest was down 52 percent rom theprevious year and 59 percent rom the long-term average.
Tere was a relatively high percentageo juveniles in the upland bird harvest, suggesting increased reproductive successthis year, Hemmer said.
Increased precipitation this spring andsummer resulted in good wetland conditionsor waterowl. Duck harvest was up 22percent rom the long-term, but was down 32percent rom last year. Most waterowl hunterreports were positive, but Hemmer said e werwaterowl hunters were seen at the checkstation later in the season.
