WHAT’S IN YOUR HEART?

In the gospel, John the Baptist repeats Isaiah’s prophecy about a time to come when

ground will be made level and paths straight. In biblical terms these words are

metaphors for the change that needs to happen in one’s personal life. Advent is a

good time to “prepare the way of the Lord” in your heart and mind.

In your own life what are the “valleys” that need to be filled? What is “crooked” that

you need to straighten?

FROM THE PASTOR

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As you may already know, this Tuesday on the Feast of the Im-

maculate Conception the Holy Year of Mercy will begin and

carry though until next November. Our Holy Father, Pope Fran-

cis has stressed continuously and repeatedly throughout his pa-

pacy the importance of God’s mercy. We are the recipients of it,

and as such, we should also be agents of that same mercy to

those we meet. I mentioned in my letter a couple weeks ago that

we would be featuring excerpts of Bishop O’Connell’s beautiful

pastoral letter written for the Holy Year of Mercy, entitled Mer-

cy and Truth Shall Meet. The excerpts will be included in the

bulletin periodically throughout the course of the entire year. I

hope you enjoy reading it.

The season of Advent is upon us and already, I’m sure we have

been asking ourselves, “Where does the time go so quickly?”

We never seem to have enough of it. In this year of mercy, I

share with you some thoughts from Pope Francis’ papal bull in

which he announced the convening of this year of mercy:

As we can see in Sacred Scripture, mercy is a key word that in-

dicates God’s action towards us. He does not limit himself mere-

ly to affirming his love, but makes it visible and tangible. Love

after all, can never be just an abstraction. By its very nature, it

indicates something concrete: intentions, attitudes, and behaviors

that are shown in daily living…

In order to be capable of mercy, therefore we must first of all

dispose ourselves to listen to the Word of God. This means re-

discovering the value of silence in order to meditate on the Word

that comes to us. In this way, it will be impossible to contem-

plate God’s mercy and adopt it as our lifestyle.

EXCERPTS FROM B ISHOP DAVID M. O’CONNELL’S PASTORAL LETTER FOR THE HOLY YEAR OF MERCY – MERCY AND TRUTH SHALL MEET

INTRODUCTION When you look into someone’s face, you can often see many things. At times you

see a peace and satisfaction that resides in a person’s soul. Other times, you see

worry or distraction, confusion or anxiety, wonder or hesitation. Perhaps you see

weariness or sadness, anger or frustration. There are times when a face betrays

loneliness or a hunger to be loved, a faraway look or just a blank stare. A smile, a

frown, a tear, a furrowed brow, a curiosity or special interest, a look of love: a

face often reveals more than words might ever say.

While we can often see many things in the faces of others, things that are hard to

hide, we should also remember that others can see many similar things in our

own face. St. Jerome once wrote to a widow, “The face is the mirror of the mind

and eyes; without speaking, they confess the secrets of the heart (Letter 5).”

In the Old Testament we read in the Psalms, “always look to the Lord and his

strength; always seek his face (Psalm 105: 4).” The Book of Chronicles advises

that we “rely on the mighty Lord; constantly seek his face (1 Chronicles 16: 11).”

When we seek the Lord’s face, we will find it most often in the face of others.

When we seek and find the face of the Lord, what is it that we really see there?

Estimados Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo, Este martes, celebramos la Fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción y comenzará el Año de la Misericordia que estará vigente hasta noviembre del 2016. Nuestro Santo Padre Francisco, ha destacado constantemente y repetidamente durante su papado, la importancia de la misericordia de Dios. Nosotros somos los destinatarios, y como tal, debemos ser agentes de esa misma misericordia con todos aquellos que encontramos en nuestro camino. En la carta mía de unas semanas atrás, yo les mencioné que les iba a presentar durante este Año Santo de la Misericordia, extractos de la carta pastoral escrita por nuestro Obispo David M. O'Connell, titulado La Misericordia Y La Verdad Se Reunirá. Los extractos serán incluidos en el boletín periódicamente durante el transcurso de este año litúrgico. Espero que los disfruten y que a la vez les ayuden a su crecimiento espiritual para mostrar profundamente la “Misericordia” a todos. Aquí les ofrezco algunos de los pensamientos del Papa Francisco, escritos durante su anuncio y convocación del Año de la Misericordia. Como podemos ver en la Sagrada Escritura, la misericordia es una palabra clave que indica la acción de Dios hacia nosotros. Él no se limita meramente a afirmar su amor, pero lo hace visible y palpable. El amor después de todo, nunca puede ser sólo una abstracción. Por su propia naturaleza, indica algo concreto: intenciones, actitudes y comportamientos que se muestran en la vida diaria... Con el fin de ser capaces de misericordia, debemos en primer lugar disponernos a escuchar la Palabra de Dios. Esto significa, redescubrir el valor del silencio para escuchar la Palabra que viene a nosotros de Dios y meditar en ella. De esta manera, podemos contemplar la misericordia de Dios y adoptarla como nuestro modo de vida.

INTRODUCION

Cuando tú miras la cara de una persona, se ven muchas cosas. Hay veces que vemos la paz y la tranquilidad que vive en el alma de la

persona. Otras veces, vemos preocupación o distracción, confusión, ansiedad, indecisión o asombro. Tal vez se ve el cansancio o la

tristeza, la ira o la frustración. Hay momentos en que un rostro delata la soledad o el hambre de ser amado, una mirada lejana o sim-

plemente una mirada en blanco. Una sonrisa, un gesto, una lágrima, la frente fruncida, una curiosidad o interés especial, una mirada

de amor: una cara, a menudo revela más que lo que las palabras podrían revelar. Por eso debemos recordar que otros pueden verlo

mismo en nuestros rostros.

San Jerónimo le escribió a una viuda una vez, "La cara es el espejo de la mente y de los ojos; sin hablar, se confiesan los secretos del

corazón (Carta 5)”.

En el Antiguo Testamento leemos en los Salmos, “siempre miremos al Señor y su fuerza; siempre busquemos su cara (Salmo 105:4).”

El Libro de las Crónicas nos informa que "confiemos en el Señor poderoso; buscando constantemente su rostro (1 Crónicas 16: 11)”.

La cara del Señor se encuentra con más frecuencia en el rostro de los demás. ¿Y cuándo la encontramos, que es realmente lo que ve-

mos?
