Reflections on Chanukah

of Judas Maccabee, his father andthe other stalwarts of theMaccabean line, has been cele-brated in song and story for overtwenty centuries. There are fewJewish children who have notbeen thrilled by the heroism oftheir ancestors and few Jews whohave not been fortified by the glo-rious victories of the Maccabees.

The celebration ofChanukah is a yearly re-affirma-tion of the conviction that neitherdiscrimination nor persecutioncan destroy the racial and reli-gious identity which has been pre-served over centuries. The storyof Chanukah, its miracles andmartyrdoms, is our inspiration inthe long and painful struggle topreserve our faith and traditions.

Some twenty centuries ago,the ancient Jews resisted theattempts of AntiochusEpiphanes to substitute thepagan religion of the Greeks forthe monotheism of the Hebrews.Stubborn in their allegiance tothe faith of their fathers, wiselyled by the heroic Mattathias andJudas the Maccabean, the Jewsfinally won the unequal conflictand in a spirit of reverence anddevotion rededicated the Templein Jerusalem to the worship ofGod.

The history of those days, interwoven with rich and colour-ful legend, has been a flamingtorch lighting the way to the hopethat no attempt to destroy theJews can ever succeed. The story

Most AmericanChristian leaders stronglycondemned theKristallnacht pogrom thatthe Nazis carried outagainst Germany's Jews 73years ago, in which hun-dreds of synagogues weretorched, the windows ofthousands of Jewish busi-nesses were smashed, onehundred Jews were mur-dered, and 30,000 morewere dragged off to concen-tration camps.

But words of con-demnation were not alwaysaccompanied by calls foraction. When it came toadvocating steps such asopening America's doors to

Jewish refugees, or severingU.S. relations with NaziGermany, Christian voicestoo often fell silent.

The liberal Catholicpublication Commonwealcalled for suspendingAmerica's immigration quo-tas in order to admit morerefugees. The largerCatholic weekly magazineAmerica, however, took adifferent line. America head-lined its post-Kristallnachtissue “NAZI

It is still unclear andappearing increasinglyunlikely that the popularArab uprisings of last springwill amount to any signifi-cant progress towards thecreation of free and opensocieties. The elementarymistake that so many seemto make is that 'electionsequal democracy,' but, asNatan Sharansky writes inhis famed book The Case forDemocracy, "elections arenot the true test of democ-racy, and are never thebeginning of the democraticprocess." What value is anelection with one choice onthe ballot, or many choicesbut a terrorized electorate, alternatively, less terror, more choices but complete-ly controlled access to infor-mation?

He writes, what isfirst necessary before free

elections can be held, is"free press, the rule of law, independent courts andpolitical parties." Of thesepreconditions, free media isthe first and most importantin securing a smooth transi-tion to democracy, as itspurpose is to serve as thetool by which all the othersare guaranteed.

As has been welldocumented, the organiza-tion and coordination of thevarious groups of revolu-tionaries throughout theArab world was largelymade possible as a result ofthe relatively recent democ-ratization of information. Itwas applied through vari-ous social media platformssuch as Facebook and twit-

ter. Simply put, whereas inthe past, media tools wereonly available to a selectfew, today everybody hasaccess to them.

It follows, that inseeking to ascertain thedirection in which the 'ArabSpring' is headed, and thelikelihood of the emergenceof true democratic societiesin the three countries thathave implemented regime

R E V I E WART SPIEGELMAN AND THE HOLOCAUST

Reviewed by STUART NULMAN

My first encounterwith Art Spiegelman’sunconventional, yet searingaccount of his fatherVladek’s survival of the NaziHolocaust in his nativePoland, which he calledMaus, was quite by acci-dent.

It happened 35years ago in 1976, when Istumbled upon the originalthree-page work whichappeared in an under-ground comic anthologycalled “Comix Book”. Whatintrigued me was hisunique approach to thememoir of a Holocaust sur-vivor, in which the Jewswere mice and the Naziswere cats (in a more tragicversion of the classic cat-and-mouse confrontation). How Spiegelman used thecomic book medium, andtwo cartoon animals that Iwas used to seeing in Tom &Jerry cartoons so dramati-cally, stayed with me for along time.

Imagine my sense ofanticipation when I orderedvolume one of the book ver-sion of Maus from theQuality Paperback BookClub 10 years later. To mysurprise, Spiegelmanexpanded that three-pagecomic strip story to a bookthat not only pioneered thegraphic novel genre, buthas become one of the pre-mier works in the long list ofimportant books dealingwith the horrors of theHolocaust. The novel hasreached out to future gener-ations who might otherwisehave forgotten the broadtragic scope of the Nazis’“Final Solution” forEuropean Jewry.

To Spiegelman, themega success of both Mausbooks have been a blessingand a curse, both personal-ly and professionally (aPulitzer Prize, best sellerstatus and translated intoat least 20 languages). Butnow, he has produced abook that is a perfect com-panion piece to Maus (whichis being reissued in a 25thanniversary edition singlevolume), called Meta Maus.

Meta Maus effective-ly answers the three mainquestions that Spiegelmanhas been constantly askedby fans, critics and themedia alike: why theHolocaust, why mice andwhy comics?

Through a series ofinterviews that he conduct-ed with University ofChicago associate professor

his body, moves forward, his hands clenching twogrenades. Two of the menin robes fly at him andwrestle him to the ground, knees in back, as they dis-arm him.

It looks like a scenefrom a low-budget actionfilm, complete with smokegrenades and onlookersslipping into the frame likeloose boom microphones. But it’s the final drill in aweek-long course for pro-tection specialists learninghow to behave in the high-risk Middle East environ-ment. The participantswere reenacting a realincident at a UN installa-tion not long ago, exceptthat it was staged nearIsrael’s border with theGaza Strip.

“When you neutral-ize a suicide bomber, youdon’t need to kill them. You don’t need to give hima bullet if he is still aliveand, anyhow if you have togive him the bullet, it hasto be in the right placebecause otherwise youmight hit the explosives,”explains instructor MirzaDavid.

With unrest in theArab world now in its sev-enth month and no end insight, there’s growingdemand for personal secu-rity experts from govern-ment officials and busi-ness people. Over twodozen people came toIsrael to learn from formermembers of the country’ssecret services. They gotinstruction in not only howto carry a weapon and dis-arm an attacker but howto look and act like a local.

But don’t call thembodyguards.

“It’s a protectioncounter-terrorism special-ist and, no, we don’t dobody guarding. We doguard VIPs, but that isjust one aspect. A small, small aspect to what wedo. It can go all the wayfrom guarding convoys inthe Middle East to guard-ing an actor or actress inHollywood. It’s verybroad,” says Daniel Hout,an American currentlyworking in Afghanistan.

Mirza David, chiefexecutive officer of theInternational SecurityAcademy (ISA), the compa-ny running the course, believes the chaos will last“more than a decade.” Inthe meantime, countriesneed to keep their govern-ments and economiesfunctioning, whichrequires experts such asbusiness people, engineersand policy makers to bethere on the ground.

“Without protectionspecialists, nobody willenter,” David says. “Youcannot improve the econo-my in a developing area ifnobody is protecting you.”

On this trainingbase run by ISA, they aretapping into Israel’sunique experience in deal-ing with these threats andlearning counter-terrorismtechniques like convoy andVIP protection. The week-

A few months later, refugee advocates proposedlegislation to help GermanJews that could not be con-strued as underminingAmerica's economy. TheWagner-Rogers bill wouldhave admitted 20,000 chil-dren--too young to competewith American citizens forjobs. Yet even then,Christian Century found areason to oppose helpingthe Jews: "AdmittingJewish immigrants”, it said,“would only exacerbateAmerica's Jewish problem."

One notableChristian response toKristallnacht was an initia-tive by the U.S. branch ofthe Young Women'sChristian Association(YWCA). Less than twoweeks after the pogrom, itestablished a Committee onRefugees, which undertookinformation campaignsaimed at persuading thepublic that refugees wereloyal and hardworking.Unfortunately, the YWCA'snational board soon lostinterest in the project anddeclined to fund it.According to Prof. HaimGenizi, the AmericanJewish Committee ended upproviding much of the com-

had the opportunity to exer-cise influence through theirmass-circulation newspa-per, the Christian ScienceMonitor. But true to theirchurch's emphasis on thepotential of prayer to healall ills, the Monitor's editorsargued that in response toKristallnacht, "prayer...willdo more than any amount ofordinary protests to heal thehate released in the last fewdays and to end injusticesand excesses practiced inthe name of anti-Semitism.”

The Monitor didacknowledge that "findinghavens for [the] refugees"was a necessity, butrefrained from suggestingthat America should serveas one of those havens.

One of the few con-sistently strong Christianvoices in the aftermath ofKristallnacht was that ofUtah Senator William King,a former missionary whowas arguably the most

prominent Mormon inAmerica at the time. WhilePresident Roosevelt onlyrecalled the U.S. ambas-sador from Germany tem-porarily for “consultations,”Senator King urged theadministration to complete-ly break off U.S. diplomaticrelations with Hitler. WhileFDR said that liberalizationof America’s immigrationquotas was “not in contem-plation,” King introducedlegislation to open Alaska toJewish refugees.

Sadly, SenatorKing's initiatives attractedalmost no support fromAmerica's churches. Theresponse of most Christianleaders to Kristallnacht, likethe response of theRoosevelt administrationand most of the Americanpublic, was, in the words ofProf. Henry Feingold, "nomore than a strong specta-tor sympathy for the under-dog."

the situation is unique.Dr. Adel Iskandar, of

There are norestricted websites, and 20-30 independent newspapershave been launched withinthe past 6 to 8 months. Twoof the newspapers areowned by the new govern-ment. aluation it is fair to say thatthe fledgling democracy islikely to thrive.

In Egypt, the Statemedia formerly controlledby ousted President HosniMubarak is now in thehands of the SupremeMilitary Council. In-famously the TV networkblatantly attempted tocover up a massacre ofCoptic Christians perpe-trated by the controllingmilitary. Iskandar saysthat this was an "act of sui-cide" for the station andwill result in "continuedloss of credibility." A tug ofwar persists between theInterim Government andthe Military, the outcome ofwhich remains to be seen. Some 25% of the populacehas internet access andover 5 million people haveJoined Facebook in the lastyear. The future ofEgyptian democracyremains a tossup, leaningslightly in favor of open-ness with a current 60%freedom of informationscore.

The situation inLibya is far less clear asthere is little media comingout of the country in gener-al. Whilst infrastructure fornew TV networks hassprouted, the NationalTransitional Council hastaken control of state mediaand there is no criticism ofthe current government. There are a number of clan-destine news networks thathave sprung up, as well assome newspapers, internetaccess is intermittent anduncertain. Iskandar putsLibya's freedom of informa-tion score at 40%.

The real questionhowever, is how all this willimpact the Arab-Westernrelations. In a general sensethere is an assumption thatif democracy takes hold inArab countries, peace willflourish. Sharansky strong-ly makes the case for this inhis book, saying “democra-

street, and although takingcontroversial positions on anumber of internal Arabissues, it is almost uni-formly anti-Western.Iskandar confirms that "ifAl Jazeera were to changeits coverage, it would loseits following." A formeremployee tells me that fromWashington DC based pro-gram editors, there is "verymuch a feeling of 'let's crit-icize what the US is doingnow,' and they often usethe line 'let's hold their(American policy makers)feet to the fire.'"

The US governmentlaunched an Arabic mediachannel called Al Hurra, which according to a recentZogby poll has capturedless than 1% of the market.

The above men-tioned institutionalizedmassacre of CopticChristians in Egypt and thepronounced lack of objec-tion from the general popu-lace serve as a strong indi-cation that Islamist reli-gious prejudices are by nomeans diminished. This isalso indicated by the rise ofthe Muslim Brotherhood inEgypt and the election of a“moderate” Islamist party inTunisia.

In truth, even if rig-orous internal debate is fos-tered, a society that doesn'taccept the fundamentalhumanistic principle thatall men are created equal, regardless of race religion orcreed has not yet earned thetitle 'democracy.'

Readers are given afascinating first-handaccount of this evolution inboth words and pictures. We find out why Spiegelmanchose to portray Jews asmice (based on the Nazis’“dehumanization” of theJews, whom they saw asnothing but vermin); hisdecade-long quest to get hisfather Vladek to recall allthose painful memories ofsurviving the Holocaust, especially as an inmate ofAuschwitz (the completetranscripts of those inter-views are included in thebook); how he careful ly

‘The Holocaust justwasn’t part of the publicconversation,” writesSpiegelman. “As a kid, I canremember my friends ask-ing my mother about thenumber on her arm, andher saying it was a phonenumber she didn’t want toforget.”

That all changedduring the highly publicizedtrial of Nazi war criminalAdolf Eichmann in 1961.Speigelman discovered apaperback book aboutEichmann and his warcrimes, giving him his firstexposure to the many pho-tos that were taken of theatrocities in the concentra-tion camps. This led him todo further reading and con-duct research on theHolocaust. He pouredthrough the many Polishlanguage booklets aboutthe Holocaust his mothercollected after the war. Hevoraciously read many ofthe important nonfictiontomes and novels that werereleased during the 1960sand 1970s and quicklybecame part of theHolocaust canon, such asPrimo Levi’s Survival inAuschwitz, LucyDawidowicz’s The WarAgainst the Jews andTadeusz Borowoski’s ThisWay For the Gas, Ladiesand Gentlemen. Guardian To Be“More Vigilant”

It will be some timebefore Jews will be con-vinced of its sincerity butthe Guardian newspaperhas acknowledged thatthose who claim that thepaper is “carrying materialthat either lapses into lan-guage resonant of anti-Semitism or is, by itsnature, anti-Semitic” mayin some cases have a validpoint.

Chris Elliot, thepaper’s readers’ editor, admitted that there werethree articles in the pastfew months which “couldbe read as anti-Semitic”.The articles included“References to Israel/U.S.‘global domination’ andthe term ‘slavish’ todescribe the U.S. relation-ship with israel; and in anarticle on a lost tribe ofMallorcan Jews, what Iregarded as a gratuitousreference to ‘the islands’s

The new propertytax, levied by the govern-ment in an effort to raisemoney, has been particular-ly onerous. The Jewishcommunity’s biggest sourceof revenue is income fromreal estate. The problem iscompounded by the factthat a lot of property isvacant because people can-not afford it, or tenants aredemanding large reductionsin rent.

Greek Jews haveappealed to the AmericanJoint DistributionCommittee for help. TheJDC, which played a majorrole in Argentina in 2001,has begun auditing thecommunity’s finances. Aloan may very well dependon the Greek Jewish com-munity’s own willingness tobalance its books. The clos-ing of a summer camp forJewish children is an indi-cation of how painful thecuts will be.

the paper did not deliber-ately publish anti-Semiticmaterial, But even ifthese examples are merely“read as anti-Semitic” theGuardian has to be morecircumspect. He wants“reporters, writers andeditors to be more vigilantto ensure our voice in thedebate is not diminishedbecause our reputationhas been tarnished.”

Kosher Cateringin U.S.Senate

We are not sure how“kosher” U.S. SenatorsRichard Blumenthal,Barbara Boxer, Ben Cardin,Dianne Feinstein, AlFranken, Joe Lieberman,Bernie Sanders or the othersix Jewish senators are, butin all likelihood they wouldprefer to see more than thefamous bean and ham soupserved in the Senate cafete-ria.

Well, it could be thattheir “prayers” have beenanswered. RestaurantAssociates, the contractorthat runs the chamber’sfood service, is looking intooptions for kosher food withdifferent vendors. No finaldecision has yet been madebut it does appear that forSenators who want thoseJewish delicacies, chickenand kreplach soup are onthe way for the winter.

Romney’s“Jewish” Connections

Republican presi-dential candidate MittRomney is hoping to appealto Jewish voters dissatisfiedwith Barak Obama’s posi-tion on Israel. While hisMorman background maydisturb some Jews, he doeshave a couple of “Jewish”tidbits in his personal biog-raphy which might over-come resistance amongJewish voters. First, hisfather, former Michigangovernor George Romney,

NATAN SHARANSKY MADE THE WISH OFnine-old Racheli Berger come true when he metwith her at the Jewish Agency office in New YorkCity. Racheli, who suffered a stroke in July 2009,was recently approved by the Make-A-WishFoundation, an organization that grants wishes tochildren with life-threatening medical conditions. Her wish was to go to Israel to meet her hero,Natan Sharansky. When the family was informedthat due to State Department travel advisories theFoundation does not send children to Israel, theJewish Agency stepped in. Mr. Sharansky, whohad recently participated in the JewishFederations of North America's General Assemblyin Denver, came to visit Racheli in New York. Howis it that a nine-year-old child's hero is one of thegreat human rights activists of modern times?Racheli's mother, Miriam, has the answer. "WhenI was growing up, I was very involved in causesworking to free Soviet Jews, and NatanSharansky was perhaps the best-knownrefusenik. I told my children the story of theactivist who spent nine years in the Gulag fordefying Soviet authorities and demanding the rightto emigrate to Israel." Racheli was enamored withSharansky’s story. She has dolls named after himand his wife Avital. She reenacts their reunionafter he was freed from prison and met up with hiswife in Frankfort, Germany. She even reenacts themoment when, in a final act of defiance to theSoviet regime, Sharansky walked in a zigzagtowards the car that would take him to freedom, despite being told by his captors to walk in astraight line. At Racheli’s insistence, Miriam readssections of Sharansky’s memoirs aloud to her chil-dren, and they have watched him in dozens ofvideos online.

“Hebrew Hammer”Wins MVP

Milwaukee Brewers’outfielder Ryan Braun maynot be Jewish in the eyes ofsome. But he shares withHank Greenberg and AlRosen the nickname“Hebrew Hammer” and hasbeen called a “significantJew” by one Jewish sports-writer. He is the son of anIsrael-born Jewish father, whose family was destroyedduring the Holocaust, and aCatholic mother. For mostJews that’s good enough tobe called the first Jewishbaseball player in nearly 50years to win the NationalLeague Baseball’s covetedMost Valuable PlayerAward. Braun was alsoRookie of the Year in 2007.

Braun plays on theSabbath and acknowledgesthat he has never beenobservant. He did not have
