The Fold Monthly Newsletter of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church
December 2018
Greetings, GSUMC Family!
Sometimes it can be easy to succumb to the culture of fear and division. We fear the world around us, the comparison and judgments of others, our own weaknesses and self-revelations.
Our faith communities can also suffer from fear and discouragement. The antidote we have from our faith in God is HOPE. During the season of Advent, we can calm some of our fears with the hope that we are promised in Jesus Christ. The Advent message that prepares us for the Babe born in Bethlehem is our resource to cast out every fear. We need our Christian hope now more than ever.
At this time of year I am reminded of a sermon I once preached titled "Coming Home for Christmas." Perhaps each one of us can think of one person we could ask to "come home" for worship at GSUMC. People are thinking about their faith during this time of year. Why not ask them to join you for a worship service? Perhaps their own fears will find relief as they hear the messages of Advent and Christmas.
May you have a blessed and peaceful Advent and Christmas season. May the Christ Child enter in our hearts and give us true joy. I am thankful to be partners with you in the ministry of the Gospel of Christ. Thank you so much for all of your love and support. All blessings to you and yours.

Spaghetti Dinner Friday, December 7th
Attendees at the November SPARK meeting, after much discussion, decided that a dinner will be held on Friday, December 7th. After the December dinner we will assess the volunteer coverage for the various positions that are needed for the dinner as well as the attendance and decide if the dinners will be continued.
The dinners give GSUMC the opportunity to open our doors and invite anyone who wishes to come to enjoy a great meal at a nominal price as income for the church. Please find a place to share some of your time to help at the dinner. If you have any questions about any of the preparations for the dinner (the tasks before, during as well as afterwards) feel free to contact Pam Post.
None of the prep and things that are done for the dinner are difficult, they involve mostly a bit of your time and energy. If you are someone who usually works before, during or after the dinner talk to folks and make a personal invitation to join you wherever you might usually help. And of course - invite friends, family, co-workers and neighbors to join you for a delicious pasta dinner!
Please contact Pam Post with any questions.

JOY RIDEOur Next Joy Ride is
Christmas Day
For those who are not familiar with our Joy Ride, we make homemade cookies,
pack them up and deliver them to places in our community that are open and working on the holidays (first responders, hospitals).
It is such a wonderful outreach and the response we receive is overwhelming! We will have sign-up sheets in the Fellowship Hall this month for those who would like to donate a dozen homemade cookies. If baking is not your thing perhaps you would like to grab a plate and drop them off at a designated place?
We will be posting more information about drop off times for the cookies and picking up a plate to deliver on Christmas day.
Please consider contributing to this outreach program so we can let our community workers know just how much we appreciate all the work they do for our community.
5th Sunday Clothing
Drive
December 30th
Please bring your gently used clothing and household items to Good Shepherd on December 30th. We will take them over to the Brightmoor Free store where families can shop for clothing and household items. Please make sure your items are in a box or bag in a size that is manageable for who load and deliver donations.
Tai Chi Holiday Schedule
Tai Chi will be taking a break for the Holidays. The last class of the year will be December 13. We will resume class on January 7th.
Happy Holidays!

Dearborn Community Food Pantry Update:
Our food pantry was blessed to be the recipient of the food and money collected by Henry Ford Village retirement community during their annual food drive and turkey trot. Erin Reas-Williams attended the kick-off event on Nov. 2 and told the group assembled for the turkey trot about the Dearborn Community Food Pantry located at our church. During the following 12 days, the residents responded generously by donating over 1,000 food items and $1235. These will go a long way in helping to feed our guests who come to shop at the monthly food pantry distribution.
Next Pantry Date: December 15th
We need your help restocking the Pantry shelves for the Christmas Season. Our clients have a need to help feed their four-legged family members too. Listed are some items that we are critically low on, but any boxed food item is welcome.
Pet Food (dog and cat), Cat Litter, Almond Milk, Juice, Jam/ Jelly
