The votes have been tallied and the results are in! The new chair-elects of the six International Leadership Association Member Interest Groups (MIGs) are:

Business LeadershipJennifer Moss Breen, director of the PhD program in Human Capital Management, College of Business, Bellevue University

Leadership deveLopmentDeRetta Cole, vice president of Human Resources, Turner Broadcasting Systems, Inc.

Leadership educationRian Satterwhite, director of the Holden Center for Leadership & Community Engagement, University of Oregon

Leadership schoLarshipDavid Rosch, assistant professor in Agricultural Leadership, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

puBLic LeadershipNikol Hopman, director of the Leiden Leadership Centre & Centre for Professional Learning, Leiden University Campus Den Haag

Youth LeadershipAngel Acosta, program director, Leadership exCHANGE

For more information on each new chair-elect, please visit their respective MIG website. This year’s election, which ran from Nov. 21 - Dec. 5, garnered an astonishing 15% of membership votes (the previous high was 7%). Elections, which are open to all ILA members, were held via online ballot. Making the election more exciting was the fact there were multiple candidates for each MIG chair-elect position, which showcased a true desire on the part of membership to serve.

“I am elated to be the new chair-elect for the Youth Leadership MIG,” exclaims Angel Acosta. “I work with youth every day, hence it is inspiring to formally be part of a group that intentionally channels intellectual energies for the betterment of youth leadership development and practice.”

In addition to assisting the MIG chair, the new chair-elects will participate in tasks relating to the year-round work of the community including co-managing submissions for the ILA annual global conference, MIG meetings, and special projects.

“Bringing together scholars and practitioners in an effort to learn from one another is a priority for me in my new role as chair-elect of the Business Leadership MIG,” notes Jennifer Moss Breen. “Though not always easy to accomplish, I believe that the ILA can grow through strong connections with business leaders. This year, I plan to assist the MIG in creating opportunities for our collective business and scholarly minds to connect, consider, and collaborate around the topic of leadership consciousness.”

After one year in their role as chair-elect, these six individuals will succeed their respective chairs. After their year as chair is complete, they stay involved as the immediate past chair. In all, these people are embarking on a three-year leadership role in the ILA’s member communities.

“I’m honored to have the ability to increase my service within the ILA,” says David Rosch. “I know I am following in the footsteps of other excellent professionals and I hope over the next two years we will continue our current path of growth!”

The ILA congratulates the 2014 chair-elects and looks forward to working with them to promote our mission and values. Unelected candidates are encouraged to continue their high level of member engagement.

A Season to Celebrate ‘Dispersed Leadership in Action’ILA BoArd Corner

December is always a month that stirs ambivalent feelings for me at ILA. We are excited about the new year, full of possibilities, but at the same time, for many leaders, this is the end of their term. They are stepping down and handing over responsibilities to new leaders. As we close another stimulating year for ILA, I think it is appropriate to take a moment to thank the many ILA leaders who contributed so much to our organization’s growth and continuing success in 2013.

We at ILA put into practice every year what John W. Gardner (1912-2002) in his classic, On Leadership (Free Press, 1990), called “dispersed leadership.” As opposed to centralizing leadership around a few individuals who stay in power for life, he argued that organizations and societies are at their strongest when they empower individuals at all levels to take on leadership roles.

We clearly see dispersed leadership in action every year during the ILA’s global conference, when dozens of volunteers come together and make it all happen. The Montréal conference this year was no exception. We are very thankful for the conference chair, Éliane Ubalijoro, and her team for the countless hours dedicated to a powerful conference.

As much as we enjoy the global conference, ILA is more than an annual event. Our Member Interest Groups (MIGs) provide

a wonderful opportunity for dispersed leadership in action. Each MIG plays a key role in fostering a sense of community among the members. They also create the network through which we advance the study and practice of leadership – the central mission of our organization.

We are extremely appreciative of the work that the outgoing MIG chairs did this year: Karen Geiger (Business Leadership MIG); Tom Sechrest (Leadership Development MIG); Robert McManus (Leadership Education MIG); Kevin Lowe (Leadership Scholarship MIG); Erwin Schwella (Public Leadership MIG); and Andrew Henck (Youth Leadership MIG). They made their mark and contributed to the energy and enthusiasm that permeate the groups.

InadditiontoourMIGs,theILAhasveryactiveAffinityGroups(AGs) and Learning Communities (LCs). Their leaders are also to be commended for their dedication to furthering ILA’s mission. In particular, I would like to thank outgoing Women & Leadership AG Chair Carmela Nanton and Sandra Peart of the Leadership Education Program Directors, Deans, and Chairs AG. While the transition of new leadership for the Directors, Deans, and Chairs AG has not happened yet, the process is already under way. These two leaders, along with all others serving on ILA’s member communities, deserve recognition.

At the Board level, December is also the time when we rotate out some of the Board members, according to the ILA Bylaws. This month, we express our deepest appreciation to Brad Jackson who

finishedhisterm.BradwasaninfluentialcontributortoILA’stransition to an independent 501(c)3 organization. As we drafted the ILA Bylaws and the Articles of Incorporation, Brad’s advice and support served as an invaluable guide. Brad was elected by the Boardtobetheorganization’sfirstViceChair.Weworkedcloselytogether through the Executive Committee.

I think that the truly exciting part of this December ritual is that these leaders are not “going away.” They will continue to be active members in our organization. Therefore, we are not saying “good-bye.” Instead, we are making room for others to take on leadership roles, in the true spirit of dispersed leadership in action. I fully expect that the leaders rotating out this month are not done – they will remain active contributors to ILA for years to come. But for now, we close the year with expressions of gratitude for a job well

New website for Leadership Legacy ProgramILA onLIne

The ILA is pleased to announce the release of the Leadership Legacy Program website featuring a list of honorees, recorded oral histories, videos of recipients being awarded at ILA conferences, and photos. “This is a wonderful venue for the ILA to recognize the ‘hall of famers’ of leadership scholarship,” says Cynthia Cherrey, ILA president. “These individuals are giants, icons, and visionaries, and we are delighted to be able to honor them.” TheILAinductsindividualsfromthefieldofleadershipstudiesintotheLeadership Legacy Program (the Program) by presenting them with ILA’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual global conference. Honorees are selectedbasedontheirsignificantanddiversecontributionstothefieldofleadership.

At the association’s most recent conference in Montréal, honorees included Henry Mintzberg, Alice Eagly, and (posthumously) Ralph Stogdill. Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence at Indiana University for conducting the oral histories for the Program. Scarpino says conducting the oral history interviews has ben “both a privilege and an opportunity.” In addition to enjoying the extended, in-depth conversations, he believes the recording, transcribing, and archivingofinterviews“createsanopportunitytoaddsignificantlytowhatweknowabouttheseindivduals, theircareers, andleadershipmore generally.”

The Flow Project

Skye Burn

Humanity is currently facing tremendous challenges (violence, terror, political polarization, climate change, resource depletion, economic instability). How we respond to these challenges affects the outcome. Leaders play a key role in shaping our collective response, and The Flow Project is providing leaders with new ways of understanding the challenges we face and is helping leaders develop new capacities for addressing the situations.

“The Flow Project is transformative, it looks through the lens of art to reveal a world of possibility and creative opportunities where people often see obstacles and problems,” explains Skye Burn, The Flow Project’s executive director. “We are research-based and engage groups of artists in an inquiry to identify principles and practices of art-making common across mediums. We use a research methodology that combines action research and grounded theory.”

Officiallyestablishedasanonprofitin2008,TheFlow Project’s origins began with “three people doodling around a kitchen table.” They asked how artists could have a voice in leadership and governance and speculated how the knowledge andexpertiseartistspossesscouldbenefitleadersand policy-makers. The name of the organization was chosen on thebasisofmultiplemeanings.Ingeology,“flow”referstotheability to transform under pressure without breaking apart. In art, “flow”meanstheworkhassmoothcontinuity;itflows.“Flow”also refers to the state artists are in when they are creating works of art, sometimes described as being in the “zone” or “groove”. Inleadershipandorganizationaldevelopment, theflowstateisgenerally called “alignment” and it occurs when the members of a group are working with a common purpose and shared vision.

Participating artists can become involved with The Flow Project via its Artist Inquiry, which strives to develop “a comprehensive understanding of the art-making experience which can be applied in resolving the challenges of today’s world.” Working in diverse mediums, artists, with the aid of a facilitator, gather to discuss their experiences creating art. Once the conversation has addressed the mission of The Flow Project – what is important for humanity to know about the art-making experience? – transcripts are created and analyzed to identify emerging themes and concepts. A report is returned to the group with a second question focusing on the dominant theme from the previous conversation and the cycle repeats until the

group or the Flow Process Team deems the conversation complete. In 2011’s Leadership for Transformation, a volume in the ILA’s Building Leadership Bridges book series, Skye penned an article titled “What Art Offers Leadership: Looking beneath the Surface.” In it, she stresses the importance the arts can and should play at all levels of leadership. When leaders encounter resistance, she writes,

artists can “help leaders appreciate the creative valuesofresistance”andworkthroughdifficulties.

The Flow Project is changing public perceptions of the arts and artists, according to Skye. Artists are commonly recognized for the value of their products, but not for the value of their experience and expertise. They are seldom asked to serve as expert advisors in developing public policy or developing strategies for intervening in troublesome situations. The Flow Project is showing that knowledge of art-making has practical applications in creating business, organizations, communities, and the world.

The Flow Project is currently partnering with Western Washington University in hosting an international summit in the summer of 2015. The title of the summit is Thresholds: Resolving Social and Cultural Challenges in, with and through the Arts. Dates are

stillbeingfinalized, butthesummitwilltakeplaceinBellingham,WA, USA. The call for proposals will be issued in the fall of 2014 and Sky encourages ILA members to participate and “contribute to the conversation.”

SkyefirstjoinedtheILAasanindividualandhasattendedeveryannual conference, presenting at many, since 2007. When she and Doug Banner founded The Flow Project, they switched from individual to group membership.

“We value the openness the ILA has to the idea that arts are relevant to leadership. We value the learning community, which provides a space for conversation, sharing research, exchanging ideas, and growing in community.”

Other ILA members have begun taking notice of The Flow Project’s initiatives, and are complimentary of its work model. In her Nov. 5 Spirited Thoughts on Leadership, Transformation, and Survival blog, ILA member Carol Burbank writes about meeting Skye and Doug at the recent ILA conference in Montréal and the “remarkable work” The Flow Project is doing.
