MOLESCROFT PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 23rd November 2018 Volume 18 Issue 4 The Magic of Christmas at Molescroft Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils All the children and staff are getting ready for four special Christmas events to which you are invited. Christmas at primary age is a magical time and we look forward to sharing the wonder with you and your children. The Foundation Year is joining forces with Year 1 to present their own Christmas Family Assembly “The Inn Crowd” which will be performed on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th December at 9:15 a.m. Year 2 and Y3 meanwhile are to present Disney’s stage production of Beauty and the Beast Junior on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th December both at 9:15 a.m. These times have been chosen to hopefully help parents with the potential for flexible working to attend, rather than it being in the middle of the working day. I understand that for some of you there is disappointment that we do not admit any pre-school children to the performances. Unfortunately I have seen so many events distracted by little children crying, or even running about that I made the decision a long time ago not to invite our pre-school children. I apologise for the disappointment but I believe the priority must be for the children who are performing. It is equally annoying for parents if their child’s line is lost under the background noise. Nevertheless I can offer a compromise. The assemblies are to be performed to the school as a Dress Rehearsal. If Parents/Carers wish to bring along a pre-school child or indeed would find it difficult to attend otherwise, they can attend either dress rehearsal. Please inform the office in advance if you would like to attend a Dress Rehearsal as the limited places must also be booked. The FY/Y1 dress rehearsal is on Tuesday 18th December at 9:15 a.m. and the Y2/Y3 Dress Rehearsal is on Tuesday 11th December at 9:15 a.m. In order to secure tickets for our public performances please complete the booking form at the end of this newsletter; which was also sent home in hard copy; and return it to school by Friday 30th November 2018. Please note forms will be dated as they are received in the office and tickets issued in that order. Once the hall is full it is impossible to allocate any more tickets. There are a maximum of 2 seats available per family (at the moment). If after the initial booking period there are spare tickets these will be released via a second round form issued on the following week on the same basis as above up to a maximum of 1 more ticket per family. R Christmas continued... Making sure you don’t miss out.

Meanwhile the Y4 to Y6 Christmas Celebration will be held in Beverley Minster on Monday 17th December at 7pm. We are calling the event a Festival of Christmas and I am sure it will be a wonderful occasion. All children from Y4 to Y6 will be performing, PLUS Y3 CHILDREN WHO ARE CHOIR MEMBERS. I am delighted to announce that this year we are again being joined by KS2 children from Woodmansey CE Primary School. This is recognising the collaboration partnership we have with the school. The event is to be spread throughout the central nave so all can get a good view. Those of you who are familiar with this, but new this year, will be the use of the full length of the nave to the back of the Minster and special lighting installed throughout the length, avoiding the rather blinding spot light. No one should miss anything, wherever you are sat. All are welcome and there are no tickets to book for this event. As indicated, the choir will be performing as well. Every Y4 to Y6 child will also be playing their Recorder and we are looking forward to the first ever public performance from the Woodmansey CE Primary School Ukelele band. The

main feature of the evening is to be a Christmas Musical “Christmas Around the World” performed by all the children in Y4 to Y6. I am grateful again to the Minster staff for facilitating the event, which will be in itself an act of some faith as we shall not be rehearsing in the Minster before the event. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. This date was advertised in the November Newsletter and clearly we hope that every KS2 child will participate. If for any reason this is not possible, please write a short note or e-mail as soon as possible. This is to ensure anyone not performing is not rehearsed in a crucial role or pivotal position.

Again following beautiful concerts in previous years, the Orchestra plus featured soloists are to have their own special Festival of Christmas Music in school on Friday 14th December. This will commence at 2:30 p.m. and is a ticket only event. This event is not open to pre-school children. In addition The Friends will be serving festive refreshments from 1:45 p.m.

Tickets must be booked using the Christmas Booking Form. Deadline: Friday 30th November 2018.

“I hope our mix of Christmas events will launch the Christmas spirit”

The Friends’ Association will be serving refreshments in the hall from 8:45 am on Wednesday 12th, Thursday 13th, Wednesday 19th & Thursday 20th December 2018 and from 1:45pm on Friday 14th December 2018 to guests attending the assemblies.

R CHRISTMAS DATES FOR THE SCHOOL CHOIR It’s the choir’s busiest season.

Every Thursday lunchtime the school is treated to the Sound of Music as the members of the school choir meet up to practise with Mrs. Walker, Mr. Britton and Mrs. Cameron The choir adds greatly to the life of the school and often sings for us at special events. In advance may I pass on my thanks to the children for their work, sharing their talents and giving of their time. Also thanks to their parent/carers for ensuring the children can meet their out of school time bookings!

Sunday 2nd December 2018 at 12:30 and 1:30pm FOMS Christmas Fayre

Monday 17th December 2018 at 7:00 pm. Festival of Christmas at Beverley Minster. THIS INCLUDES Y3 CHOIR MEMBERS

Thursday 20th December 2018

Beverley Grange Residential HomeFriday 21at December at 9:30 am. Final Assembly of 2018In addition the choir will perform at Tescos for an hour to raise money for charity. This is not a performance and we must request no audience, as a few years ago our “fans” blocked the access route through the store. Y3 are similarly to sing for an hour.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MOLES ON STAGE Maybe we should add “School of Performing Arts” to our title. Moles are popping up on stage all over the county this Christmas. We have talented and enthusiastic children appearing in Pantomimes in Hull, Beverley and Bridlington. In addition Moles can be found on stage at the East Riding Theatre and in Evita at the Hull New Theatre.

Needless to say I am absolutely delighted for them all “Break a Leg”.

COME DRESSED AS YOU LIKE DAY The last event of the Charity Campaign Our final day is a non-uniform day but children may also choose to be more creative and come in fancy dress. The same applies to staff! The fine for this is £1 which is the final part of the Charity Fund Raising Effort. At our final assembly for 2018 we will announce how much the children’s charity appeal has raised and also the charities that they have chosen to support. May I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the school and the pupils, and particularly for your support of the children’s Charity Fund Raising Events. The aim is, as you know to encourage the children to think of those less fortunate than themselves and to make some small sacrifice in the terms of time, effort and pocket money. It is not designed as a major assault on parental purses and wallets!

NOW LIGHT 2000 CHRISTMAS LIGHTS A special bit of magic for our children. Continuing our tradition there will be a special assembly to welcome the decoration of the Christmas tree and the start of the school’s festive preparations. This will be held on Friday 30th November at 10:00 am. Unfortunately not everyone can attend, however Governors,

Staff, Friends Association Committee Members and Volunteer Helpers are most welcome. The assembly will conclude with the lighting of both our indoor and outdoor trees. The outdoor tree is illuminated by 3000 lights provided by the Parish Centre Committee. Please note: Guests attending MUST BE ON SITE BEFORE 9:45am

The famous Christmas Tree Assembly, it’s a gift to the children.

CHRISTMAS DINNER A NEED TO RESERVE Christmas Dinner will be served on Thursday 20th December 2018 in four separate sittings. In order to avoid waste. Parents/Carers were asked to return the reservation slip at the end of the November newsletter. If you haven’t done this, please return it immediately as the food is being ordered now.

OUR ACT OF REMEMBRANCE A fitting tribute Many of you were I know moved by the many events and ceremonies observed to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice. One of the most poignant to me was the engraving of the beaches across the land of images of fallen soldiers, then being washed away by the incoming tide. The fall of poppies in the Royal Albert Hall or at the Menin Gate in Belgium is always enough to raise a tear and so it was on 12th November when we joined together to mark our ceremony of Remembrance in school. As always the children were simply

remarkable. Their respect and silence was moving in itself. The procession to the Friends Garden of Remembrance was flawless and the resulting tribute of the wonderfully decorated pebbles which they brought, quite emotional. The lasting memorial is shown below, photographed by Mr. Britton and highlighting the soldiers made by Mr. Platten, who similarly wanted to do his bit for the commemorations. When I asked the children why we do this, the answer from the hall came, because a promise was made to those who

suffered and died that we would not forget. Indeed we will not; the next generation is taking on the mantle of carrying the promise forward.

Edgar, Emilia, Phoebe and Charlotte met up

with Mr. Loncaster at the Beverley War Memorial

on Sunday 11th November 2018.

The children presented the Wreath from

Molescroft Primary School recognising our promise to those who gave everything in the

First World War.

SNOW POLICY: IMPORTANT The following is taken from the school’s Safeguarding Policy and should prepare parents/carers for what to expect when it snows.

The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

Policy in Practice What the school does to assist in the event of icy weather conditions. It is not practical to grit the entire site, but as part of the gritting policy, safe routes round the site and across the South Playground have been identified and will be gritted before giving access to the site, thereby minimising the risks to children parents and visitors. The car park will also be gritted.

Children are not allowed to make slides on the playgrounds. Playgrounds are gritted if practical before 8:30am and when not, by morning break. At playtimes a decision as to whether children are to be allowed outside will be made by the senior teacher on duty in conjunction with a member of the Senior Management Team.

Children may not throw snowballs on the playgrounds. However if the field is covered by thick snow pupils may be allowed to play on the field in the snow, make snowman and throw snowballs. Those not wishing to throw snow (or indeed be hit by snowballs) should stay on the playgrounds. The school believes that playing in and throwing snow is part of a child’s life experiences.

In extreme cases the Headteacher may decide that there is no option but to close the school if there is presented a severe health and safety risk. This done, the Chair of

Governors will be informed and parents via text message. A severe Health and Safety Risk would be presented if insufficient staff could reach the school or indeed the health and safety of staff meant that they should leave early. Due to the location of the school it is expected that the school will be able to remain open. Closing a school at short notice including closing mid way through a day poses considerable difficulties for parents and will only be taken as a very last resort.

A complete heating failure in the winter and/or a loss of the water supply would however result in the school having to close.

Good communication is essential. Parents receive a copy of specific instructions during the autumn and winter months via the monthly newsletters and the website. Children have the processes explained to them in the classroom. It is expected that parents adhere to these instructions and pass all relevant information to friends and relatives who may also come to school to bring and fetch children. Parents/Carers are asked to be responsible and plan more time for their journey, suitable footwear for having to walk further, wrapping up to keep warm etc....Parents should not expect to be able to park close to the school at these times! Parents and visitors are expected to use the gritted paths rather than walk across the snow and ice.

Snow Policy and Procedures - information for teaching and support staff In the event of disruption caused by heavy snow the prime concern of the school must always be the safety of the pupils and staff.

It is expected that all staff will make every reasonable effort to undertake the journey to school. It is appreciated that the journey may take longer than normal and therefore some staff may not be able to arrive before the normal start of school time.

In the event of severe weather, a decision to close the school for pupils will be made by 7am. The Head Teacher will make arrangements for PARENTS TO BE INFORMED BY TEXT IF THE SCHOOL IS TO CLOSE.

Updates will be posted on the Twitter section of the school’s website. www.molescroftprimary.net

In the event of the normal timetable being suspended, a programme of activities will be organised for pupils who arrive at school. Teachers and Teaching Assistants will be delegated to supervise these activities.

Rather than a full closure it is more likely that the school will remain open on a reduced capacity. In such an event, parents/carers will be asked if it is possible to make alternative arrangements for pupils. Where this is not possible the school will remain open for those who need to come to school or for those who cannot go home in the case of an unexpected early closure. As the number pupils remaining decreases, they will be moved to other classes or the hall.

The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

GOVERNOR OF THE MONTH Having spent the past few months introducing all our governors to you, governors are now going to reappear but this time explaining their role and responsibilities. The first governor is our Chair Mr. Ade Adamson What does a Chair of the Governing Body do?

Allow me to be honest; despite having been a parent governor for four years, it was still a question I asked myself, when I was asked to be Chair of the Molescroft Governing Body.I've now been in that "Chair" for two years, and in a better position to answer.I’m here, along with the other governors, not just to support the head-teacher and staff at the school, but to make sure that they are providing top-notch education for our children. We endeavour to do this by having that strategic overview of the school; by setting suitable objectives, agreeing policies and targets, reviewing those targets and standards, and ensuring all our pupils are included. We're also that "critical friend" for the school. We offer support and advice, but also challenge and question where we feel it appropriate. The governing body is quite a team; we're volunteers from police officers to teachers; from accountants to sporting professionals and specialists in education. This means that there is a breadth of knowledge and experience, to support the headteacher, his staff and the school. I sit as chair of meetings of the full governing body. These take place once per term and we discuss and make decisions upon various items, including financial matters, policy agreements and membership of the governing body.I also sit as chair of the curriculum meeting. Taking place once per term, we consider the quality of the teaching, assessments and pupil outcomes. I sit on both the safeguarding meeting and the financial meeting. There we make sure that all areas of safeguarding are effective and also look closely at the school's financial arrangements, including financial planning for the years ahead. These also take place termly.I also attend the teachers' salary reviews and the performance review of the head-teacher.Each governor has a link to an item on the school improvement plan. It assists in spreading that burden of responsibility across the whole governing body. As Chair, I am the safeguarding link governor, as well as subject link governor for maths. As governors, we may also attend interviews for staff; disciplinary meetings and may deal with some complaints. Also, as some of you may have witnessed, I come in to Molescroft School on occasion, and other schools, to give presentations on E-safety to the children, staff and parents.

That, in a nutshell, is what I do, along with juggling my time between being a Police Officer and a parent of two girls (with all the drama that entails). I'm certainly busy, but enjoy all my roles, and wouldn't have it any other way.

CHARITY CINEMA NIGHT The children have selected the film“Brave” This year’s Charity Fund Raising Cinema is to be held on Thursday 6th December from 3:15pm to 5:30pm. It is for Y4 to Y6 Children. R Countdown to the Friends’ Christmas Fayre Donations welcome anytime On Sunday 2nd December 2018 11:00 am to 2:00 p.m. the ‘Friends’ are hosting the annual Christmas Fayre. This is, as most of you know, the biggest fundraising event of the Friends’ year and, once again are asking for your help to make it another resounding success. There will be lots of old favourites including Santa’s grotto, tombola, chocolate tombola, jam jar tombola, teddy stall many games and prizes, raffle, refreshments and craft stalls.

The ‘Friends’ will be extremely grateful for items for any of the tombola stalls — unwanted gifts, new books and toys, chocolate and soft toys. Filled jam jars (filled with anything you like) for the jam jar tombola are now a firm favourite. Please note sweets in jars must be wrapped. We regret we are unable to accept second hand books, jigsaws, DVDs, CD’s and toys (other than cuddly toys for the teddy tombola).

We will, as ever be grateful if anyone can spare an hour or so on the day to help out on a stall, set up or clear away. Please let the office know if you have any availability.

The Friends Association have also asked if the Choir will be willing to provide some festive music at 12.30pm and 1:30pm. Last year nearly £3000 was raised at this event. The Friends work tirelessly for the school and all our pupils benefit so much from their work.

One of the obvious benefits of the work of the ‘Friends’ is the Adventure Playground, but the Friends have purchased so much more including 114 iPads, the fully fitted kitchen, Tony Knight Centre, Conference Curtains in the Hall, new carpet for the FY & the new Maths Mastery materials The difference the Friends Association makes to the learning, happiness and wellbeing of your children is immense. OUR NEXT TARGET of 1 iPad for every KS2 child is now 75% complete.

Please note that the Fayre opens at 11:00am ... just in time for lunch and we are catering just for you! This is the ‘Friends’ biggest event of the year. They need your support.

Please don’t forget to return the Sold and unsold Raffle Tickets to school by Friday 30th November 2018

KEVIN’S DIARY It’s a school dog’s Life I hope you all had a lovely half term, I did. I went to France with Mrs. Jameson and her family for the week. I went on the Eurotunnel and was extra well behaved in the car. I then stayed in Normandy for the week. I enjoyed running around in the garden and playing with a chocolate Labrador called Tom.

I was very excited to come back to school and see everyone though.  I’m back in routine now and I am settled happily in Mrs. Jameson’s office. I had a very important part to play in Teachers got Talent and felt that my stage debut went very well. I accidentally, on

purpose, ate the straw from Mr. Loncaster’s boots. Sorry Mr. Loncaster, I didn’t know you were a scarecrow. Mr. Loncaster and Mrs. Jameson have mentioned that I will start going into the library soon for your reading for enjoyment sessions. I can’t wait to start hearing you all read. I am enjoying listening to all the rehearsals for the Christmas plays and I am excited to see how big the Christmas tree is this year, Mrs. Jameson has told me it is always pretty.

Mr. Loncaster has told me that I must be on my best behaviour when I am near the tree and try not to eat any of the decorations or water it!

Kevin made his Theatrical Debut in Teachers Got Talent in a spoof version of “The Wizard of Oz”.

CHARITY DISCO Get down and boogie for a good cause. This year’s Charity Fund Raising Disco is to be held on Tuesday 4th December from 3:15pm to 4:30pm. It is for FY to Y3 Children. Booking form has been sent home to order tickets and is reprinted in this newsletter.

Entry is £4 which includes a full refreshments package including Hot Dog, Bun, Crisps and unlimited juice.

Following the huge success of the recent Friends’ Disco, the same DJ

has been booked with his professional kit, entertaining style and great prizes.

Children attending the disco will not require any additional money at the event.

The children organising the event will be supervising the food and juice and points and helping the younger children to have a great time. All the money raised will go to this year’s charity appeal to send deprived children in the UK on a holiday to the Nightingale Centre in Derbyshire.

Children may bring party clothes to change into for the Disco, Cinema Night and the Christmas parties in December.

Y5 LONGCROFT FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

Having been successful in the Y4 tournament last year, Molescroft’s Y5 team kicked off this year’s tournament with both optimism and the weight of expectation on their young shoulders. The tournament format had changed due to increased numbers. 16 games to be played over 2 sessions but with just 6 minutes a game. To be successful, the team would need to be able to score quickly whilst continuing to defend resolutely. The squad of Daniel M, Charlie and Joe S, Lucas H, Luke H, Ben C, Max B, Matthew L, Ben P and Jessica M…did just that. However, from the start it was clear that the level of football had improved across the competition and in addition to the always resolute Minster and St Nicholas squads, both Swinemoor and Cherry Burton were playing well.

Throughout the two days of the tournament; the midfield was anchored by the irrepressible pair of Charlie S and Daniel M. Their ability to break up opposition moves and then drive Molescroft forward was invaluable and they both have real ability in the sport. They were strongly supported by the attacking guile of Max B and Lucas H who showed deft touches and an eye for goal when it was needed. Upfront, Ben C led the line exceptionally well, showing great technique and pace. Most importantly, keeping the score board ticking over. Luke H, Jessica M and Ben P were strong in defence and productive when pushed into midfield.

I would like to make special mention of Joe S and Matthew L. Joe is an outstanding goalkeeper and one that the team rely on. When you are in a successful team, with not lots to do, and it’s a cold evening, it is not always the most enjoyable position. However, the team were able to play offensively because they know they have him there. Finally,

Matthew, who played out of position as our stalwart in defence. Both his football and athletic ability saved the team on several occasions and in a group blessed with attacking talent he filled a vital position when he naturally wanted to play further forward. He may not always enjoy it as much but like Joe, he is exceptional at it.

Highlights of the tournament were numerous but included; A brilliant flowing 5 pass move started and finished by Ben P, a thunderbolt from Luke H, A bullet header from Charlie S, Brutal tackling from Jessica M, A fantastic goal saving defensive tackle by Matthew L and one of the most impressive central midfield games I have seen for a while by Daniel M.

The team ended victorious having played 16, W12, D3, L1. conceding just one single goal all tournaments, this resulted in their only loss over 2 tournaments! However, I was proud this 1 conceded goal came from the team trying to play out from the back. In this writer’s opinion, the right way to play football.

This is an excellent group of footballers. They are talented, a joy to coach and represent the school well. I would like to say thank you for the brilliant support by family on both evenings; the latter was exceptionally cold and wet and must not have been the most enjoyable experience.

The future continues to look bright for this squad and Molescroft football as a whole. S. Morton

“The team conceded only one goal”

The future continues to look bright for this squad and Molescroft football as a whole.
