PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
December? Wasn't it just
August?...I don't know about all
of you, but this fall just flew by
for me. By the time you read
this, we'll have just finished up
the Thanksgiving day leftovers
and will be pulling out the
holiday decorations! I can only
hope winter fly's by just as fast.
December brings our annual
Holiday party. As always, we'll
have refreshments and cake. Ed
Trout will do a demonstration
and tell you more about that in
his program article.
There were a few bonsai events
over the past couple of months.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE CONTINUED
Unfortunately, the weather did
not cooperate and Miami had a
rainy weekend for their annual
Bonsai Show with Sunday being
a total wash out. But never the
less they had a very nice exhibit
at their new location, Pine Crest
Gardens and some great
workshops and demos by Guy
Guidry.
Another great event was on the
west coast, at Eric Wigert's Open
House in Ft Myers, which has
also become an annual event for
them. It is sure to become a
regular on my bonsai calendar. I
had lots of fun and enjoyed the
whole weekend. It was my first
time at Eric's and I must say I
was like a kid let loose at Toys R
Us!! He has an extensive pre
bonsai collection with a wide
variety of tropical trees. Aside
from the workshops and
demonstrations, Eric and Andrea,
his wife, who was running
everywhere, had several other
vendors there as well as raffles
and they arranged some fun
competitions to watch and or
participate in.
Eric also has an impressive
private collection that was a joy
to walk through and admire.
You can purchase from his
private collection and bring home
a fully styled tree but you might
want to bring the whole piggy
bank!! If you missed either of
these two events there is one
more event coming this January,
Joy of Bonsai, held by the Kawa
Bonsai Society, held up north in
Flagler. More information on
that is available on the BSF web
site.
And of course we have the
biggest event of the year,
Memorial day weekend, at the
2012 BSF Bonsai convention,” A
Learning Experience”. We have
a new venue that we are all
excited about and a new format
that really does promise to make
this the bonsai event of the year
for the entire state of Florida.
I will have to miss this months
meeting as a scheduling conflict
has me attending the bi-annual
BSF board meeting in Orlando,
were we will be scoping out the
new digs and putting the final
touches on the 2012 BSF
convention. I will have more
information on the convention
for you in next months
newsletter.
Since I will not see you, Brett
and I would like to take this
opportunity to wish all of you
and your families a Happy
Holiday and a Healthy New
Year.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Dear Members of Bonsai Societies of
Florida:
The great American Bonsai Master, John
Naka is known throughout the entire world
as a wonderful teacher and a true
ambassador for bonsai. Did you know that
John was also thev FIRST bonsai artist to
tour Florida over 40 years ago as a BSF-
sponsored speaker? John came
to Florida quite often, leaving those he
taught yearning for more and better
appreciating the Art of Bonsai. He was a
very important catalyst that propelled us to
where we are today. We owe him much!
The American Bonsai Society has created
a contest to honor John, and demonstrate
how much his influence shows in our own
trees. The John Naka Award is given every
year to an artist who displays the influence
of John’s teachings in the tree they have
created, a requirement requested by Alice
Naka, John’s wife. It is a very prestigious
award!
I know that there are many, many bonsai
trees in the State of Florida, created per the
requirements of this contest, by artists who
meet the criteria requested by the Naka
family. And because John had such roots
in the advancement of bonsai in Florida, I
firmly believe that we should have a
significant representation of work
submitted for this Award.
Therefore, I would request that each
Bonsai Club in BSF consider selecting a
tree from its membership to submit to this
contest. The details on submission, and
requirements are found next or also
available on the ABS website at
www.absbonsai.org. If there is any way I
can help in this project, or you have any
other questions, please feel free to contact
me at [email protected]
I would really like to see Florida Bonsai
well represented at the 2012 John Naka
Award Ceremony in Denver.
Sincerely yours,
Ed Trout
