Volume XLX, No. 4 North Forsyth High School Winston-Salem, NC December 2009 The holidays are officially here, which means that several organizations are in need of assistance. Shipping toys to children who will not have presents under their Christmas trees and aiding cooks who provide food for the homeless are common ways in which people volunteer. The Forsyth Humane Society is also in need of volunteers to assist them in caring for animals. One way is by donating a doghouse that is in good condition. This will help unsheltered dogs from getting wet and cold from the wind on Christmas, while humans snuggle with their families in front of a fire. FHS also needs temporary foster homes for the holidays. Some of the animals are recuperating from injuries, while others just do not have a place to go. The Forsyth Humane Society’s address is 61 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC, 27104, and the phone number is (336) 721-1303. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation in Greensboro, NC desires helpers who will help sort and distribute toys with them. There are also several stores where toys can be bought and placed inside of a box. Toys “R” Us, Creekside Bowling, and Panche Salon and Day Spa are a few businesses where toys can be dropped off. If physically volunteering does not seem appealing, there are other ways to assist. Donating money or just visiting a lonely, elderly neighbor on Christmas Day is a simple way in which joy can be brought to someone. One out of every eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer. Mrs. Doby, the Allied Health instructor at North, says, “I think if insurance companies stop paying for mammograms before the age of fifty we are going to see a rise of breast cancer related deaths. I have a thirty-one year old neighbor with two small children who was just diagnosed with breast cancer; where does she fall into this?” “I think people are making too big of a deal of this. They should do what they think is best for themselves,” says Mrs. Monroe. These guidelines were created to benefit women, but are they helping or hurting? Students who achieved honor roll were permitted to attend dress rehearsal on December 9th during 7th period. The play, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, featured Austin Holdren as Hamlet.
