Volume XLX, No. 4 North Forsyth High School Winston-Salem, NC December 2009
The holidays are offi cially here, which means that several organizations are in need of assistance. Shipping toys to children who will not have presents under their Christmas trees and aiding cooks who provide food for the homeless are common ways in which people volunteer.
The Forsyth Humane Society is also in need of volunteers to assist them in caring for animals. One way is by donating a doghouse that is in good condition. This will help unsheltered dogs from getting wet and cold from the wind on Christmas, while humans snuggle with their families in front of a fi re. FHS also needs temporary foster homes for the holidays. Some of the animals are recuperating from injuries, while others just do not have a place to go. The Forsyth
Humane Society’s address is 61 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC, 27104, and the phone number is (336) 721-1303.
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation in Greensboro, NC desires helpers who will help sort and distribute toys with them. There
are also several stores where toys can be bought and placed inside of a box. Toys “R” Us, Creekside Bowling, and Panche Salon and Day Spa are a few businesses where toys can be
dropped off. If physically
v o l u n t e e r i n g does not seem
appealing, there are other ways to assist. Donating money or just visiting a lonely, elderly neighbor on Christmas Day is a simple way in which joy can be brought to someone.

This merchandise promotes breast cancer awareness within younger generations.
The federal government issued new guidelines for breast cancer screening. According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, up to fi fteen percent of malignant tumors are not detected by a mammogram. The guidelines recommend that women with no cancer risks screen biannually and start at the age of fi fty instead of the current age of forty. The reason for this change is to avoid unnecessary testing and radiation exposure for women.
Accord ing to Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, “The cancer screenings have caused a great deal of confusion and worry among women and their families across this country.” She pointed out that these guidelines support
an outside independent panel of select doctors but not the Obama Administration.
One out of every eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer. Mrs. Doby, the Allied Health instructor at North, says, “I think if insurance companies stop paying for mammograms before the age
of fi fty we are going to see a rise of breast cancer related deaths. I have a thirty-one year old neighbor with two small children who was just diagnosed with breast cancer; where does she fall
into this?”“I think
people are making too big of a deal of this. They should do what they think is best for themselves,” says Mrs. Monroe. These guidelines were created to benefi t women, but are they helping or hurting?

Students who achieved honor roll were permitted to attend dress rehearsal on December 9th during 7th period. The play, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, featured Austin Holdren as Hamlet. Hamlet lost his holiday cheer and was visited by three phantoms who helped him recover his Christmas spirit.
