Background:

The satirical video Too Late to Apologize: A Declaration is a great remake of

the original song ‘Apologize’ by OneRepublic. The clever video and lyrics

features our Founding Fathers as they write the Declaration of Independence

from England. I find that my students are able to do a great job with finding

symbols in the video and interpret the lyrics, but also laugh throughout the

entire three-minute video!

Though this is a short activity, I highly suggest watching the video a couple times with your students. On the next couple of pages, you will see lyrics to the song and a couple different versions of worksheets to give to the students.

Suggestion: A great extension or enrichment activity would be for your students to rewrite another song to fit the theme, such as Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”. Characters featured:

Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, John Adams, Sam

Adams, King George III

Halfway across the globe And we're standing on new ground Screaming 'cross the waves You can't hear a sound

There's no fair trials, no trade, no liberties No tea We've colonized America; we won't stand for tyranny, Oh king

And it's too late to apologize It's too late I said it's too late to apologize

It's too late

We've paid your foolish tax, read the acts And they just won't do We want to make it clear, we believe this much is true

All men were created with certain Unalienable rights Among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit Of happiness

And it's too late to apologize It's too late I said It's too late to apologize

It's too late It's too late to apologize It's too late I said it's too late apologize

It's too late I said it's too late to apologize, yeah It's too late

I said it's too late to apologize, yeah

Halfway across the globe And we're standing on new ground
