1. Mrshpll Mountain. The let Brigade, 5th Infantry Division (Meoha-nived) conducted operations during the month of February in the MarshallMountain AO. The Bde operated principally from FA Sh'.ron (YD13439), FSB
Nancy (YD4439), FsB Anne (Y2940), FB Tombstone (Y.D3959), and ',underBeach YJ4839),
The 3de conduoted extensive patrols and searoh and clear operationsthroughout the AO in cooperation with the lst and 2nd ARVN Reglments andlocal popular and regional forces. The guang Tti Combat ProvisionalRifle Co operated under the operational control of the Bde north ofTrieu Phong District Eq and later in the month from quang Tri City.
1st Bn, 11th Infantry (::cch) operated from FSB Sharon, Nancy, and
Anne with effective ambushes and patrols throughout the AO. On 3 Feb at
1930, a sniper team from A/l/11 sighted 5 enemy moving north. The enenr
tripped a olay.more surprise firing device and the team called mortars in
on the eneqy. After the sniper team coordinated with another 1/11 ambush
team in the vicinity, both teams then swept the aix'ea finding 8 enemy KL)A
and 2 pistols.
On 8 Feb, B Co slet Bn, 61st Infantry (Mach) began operating in .the
Di)ong Ha panhandle area, east of Dong Ha Combat Base (YD2459). Later in
the month they moved into the Zuang Tri Combat Base AO and conducted patrols
with a platoon of B Co, 1st Bn 77th ,rmor and a platoon of Marines from
4~CB. TLis operation ended on 26 Feb as B Co returned to FSB :haron.
On 26 Feb, the 1st Bde assuaed. operational control of the 1st ADVrac Bn,
2. KENTUCKY. Task Force Bravo, with Headquarters at Dong Ha Combat Baseconducted operations in the Kentucky AO until 18 Feb at 0800 when 3d MarineRegiment assumed control.
2nd Bn, 3d Marines and the 1st Amtrac Bn operated under control of TaskForce Bravo. 2nd Bn operated from C-2 (YD1364), 0-2 Bridge (YD1167), Cam Lo,and in the 1ai Loc TAOR. U! Co 2/3 worked with local popular forces in CamLo, while F Co 2/3 participated in sim lar o erations in 1ai Loc.
I` Co 2/3 provided security for the 59th 7ngineer Co which conducted landclearing operations in the Leatherneck Square Area. A total of 8,364 acreswere cleared by the U. S. Arrmy engineer unit. Several bulldozers were damagedor destroyed by enemy emplaced anti-tank rmines. (n 8 Feb in the vicinity ofYD1764 three bulldozers struck ::ines and were badly damaged. Three soldiersalso suffered muinor wo-nds. Ulso participating in the operation were the3d -ngineer Bn. and the 11th 7ngineer Rn who cleared 385 acres and 884 acresrespectively. The operation was completed and secured at the end of the month.
There were also signs of increased enemy activity along the Cua Vietiver. On 10 Peb at 0130, a liver P?atrol Boat sighted 4 enemy on the bank at
£D270643. A 3d tecon Bn team in the vicinity was notified and they xoved inbehind t>e enemy and initiated contact with smrall arms fire. Ain e,xploitationforce fro• 1st Amtrac Bn was sent in to search the area. .esults were 4 VC KitAand 4 individual ieapons captured.
From 11 Feb - 17 4eb, F Co, 2nd Bn, 4th 1iarines operated under the operationalcontrol of 2ask Torce Bravo. F Co conducted search and clear o.erations northof Dong Ha Combat Base.
On 18 Feb at 08, '0, the 3d Marine legiment, returning from O-erationTaylor Common, took over operational control of the Kentucky AO and Task ForceBravo was deactivated.
The 3d Bn, 3d 11arines was the first battalion to return to Kentacky. TheBn commenced operations from A-4 (YD1170), 0-2, and in the 'hi Ha area (YD2770).On 18 Feb, ' and C' Co, 2nd 3n, 3d Marines helilifted into FSB Erskine andCunninghan in rewey ,anyon. They conducted operations from these positionsfor the remainder of the month. On 21 Feb the 1st Bn, 3d Marines returned andco:'enced operations from VCB and Elliott Combat Base under the operationalcontrol of Task Force Hotel.
On 12 Feb C Troop, 3d Squadron, 5th Cavalry began operations in theKentucky '0. On 25 Feb, the 101st kirborne Týiv unit was joined by the 'q &Hq Troop and B Troop. A Troop, 4th Squadron, 12th Cav operated with the 3dSquadron (-) north of Dong Ha Combat Base and in the vicinity of C-2 and A-4.

3. SCOTLrJD II. During the month of February, combat operations in theSCOTL(AD AO were conducted by the hth Marine qegimentp under the operationalcontrol of Task Force Hotel located at Vaxndegrift Combat Bae.
The 1st Bn, hth Marines operated from FSB Neville (XD8357), FSB Russell(XD9195), FSB Fuller (YDO159) and 7lliott Combat Base (XD9854). They con-ducted patrols and search and clear operations in their AO.
2nd Bn, hth Marines conducted extensive squad size reconnaissance patrolsalong the DPZ, north of A-h. The battalion made several contacts with smallenemy units and found nu,merous enemy bunker complexes.
The 3d Bn, 4th Marines operated from Ca Lu (YD01h54), FSB Cates (YD9143),FSB Fuller, Elliott Combat Base, and Vandegrift Combat Base. The battalionconducted extensive patrols throughout their AO.
Enemy contacts early in the month were generally with small sized units,however later in the month units at FSB Neville and FSB Russell received heavyground attacks by enemy sappers and infanty units.
At 2230 on 24 Feb, FSB Neville received light small arms fire. At about0100 the position received RPG's and 8 2mm mortar incoming. The enemy groundattack commenced on the west side of the perimeter at 0300, Using sAtchelcharges and heavy AK-47 fire, the enemy reached the defjnsive wire. By0530 the area had been cleared of enemyraud 1solidation-began. Severiadead NVA were found with satchel charges .stranne t-,ntheir backs. There-v6re11 FR KIA, 29 WIA(E), 13 VIA(M), and 36 NVA(C). A similar attack was madeagainst FSB Russell on 2-Feb at 0350. The base received a sudden mortarattack and was hit by an enemy ground attack. All major bunkers were hit inthe first :ortar barrage. The 3d Bn operated from FSB Cunnin~ham (YD1813) and as it swept southit operated southeast of LZ Montana (YD2011), while I Co operated from FSBTurnage (YD2509). Just as with the let and 2nd battalions, 3d Bl operationswere marked with heavy enecy contact. On 16 Feb at 0845H, K/3/9 was hit whilemoving in the vicinity of YD215095. An estimated enemy platoon hit the,front and rear of the column with small arms, automatic weapons, RPG's and60mam mortars. Fire was returned with organic weapons and suprorting arms,including air strikes. Contact was broken at 1400 with 14 enemy KIA(c) and5 individual weapons captured. Friendly casualties were 1 KIA and 18 1IA(s).
During the Dewey Canyon operation units received coordinate, ground andmortar attacks on-fixed positions by the enemy. On 17 Feb at 0405 FABCunningham was attacked from the north, south and west. The perimeter waspenetrated by 13 sappers armed with satchel charges, RPG's, bamboo mines andgrenades. The attack, in which the enemy employed small arms, automaticweapons and mortars, was broken at 0700. Resulting casualties were 4 KIA,8 WIA(E), 38 WIA(M) and 37 EN KI, while 8 AK-47, 3 R1G launchers iith 26rounds, 2 radios and marV grenades were captured.
The 9th Marines found several large enemy weanons and ordnance cachesand staging areas. On 28 Feb, A Co and D Co 1st Bn, 9th Marines found acache including 10,000 82mm mortar rounds, 19,000 60mm mortar rounds,,O,000 Chi-Com grenades, and 305 SKS rifles. On 20 Feb C Co attacked andseized an enemy bunker complex killing 71 iNVA. Ei6ht individual weaponswere captured and 7 crew served weapons were captured, including two 122mmtowed howitzers.
On 18 Feb the 2nd Bn 3d Marines (-) began operating from FSB Cunnin,.amand F.33 irskine, allowing the 9th Marines to push farther south in pursuitof the enemy.

5. Target Intellipence 3ections The Target Intelligence Section continuedto maintain overlays on targets acquired, AA firings, and secondary firesand explosions. a. A sensor emplacement team from the Ground Surveillance Section em-pl,. ed sensor strings 118, 119 and 120 in the Scotland II Area of Operationon 3 February. The strings consist of the following:
b. On 4 February the Commanding General approved a forty-five man sur-veillance platoon within the Ground Surveillance Section. The organizationconsists of six teams of seven men each, a maintenance chief, supply man,and one clerk. The teams are scheduled to provide surveillance at combatand forward operating bases within the 3d Marine Division Area of Operations.
c. A reconnaissance team from the 3d Reconnaissance Battalion emplacedsensor string 151 in the Scotland II Area of Operations on 4 February. Thisstring contained 3 handsids and 1 magid.
d. On 6 February in response to a request from the 1st Battalion, 11thInfantry, a sensor contact team went to the vicinity of String 302 to inves-tigate the improper functioning of that string. Two sensors were re-emplacedand the string functioned properly.
e. On 8 February, surveillance equipment requirements for the Duel Bladearea were submitted to III MAF and XXIV Corps.

Subsistence support provided Army, Navy and MarineCorps personnel of this comwand average 35,445 rations daily. Aprroximately27% of the total rations fed daily consisted of Meal, Combat, Individualand approyimately 73% were subsisted on the III YPF Master Menu. The IIIMAW Master Menu is based on 1O0 P10110.17, Chapter b. The Marine CorpsIII !,AF Master Menu utilizes both perishable and non-perishable cannonents.The Meal, Combat, Individual is utilized only where operational require-ments preclude serving the III MAF Master Menu.

a. During the month of February 1969, 53 officers and 1804 enlistedpersonnel joined the Division. Personnel transferred by normal rotationincluded 57 officers and 1124 enlisted. Personnel transferred by servicerecords due to medevace were 11 officer,s and 551 enlisted. Other person-nel transferred by service records include one officer and 20 enlisted.
b. A total of 23 Division Directives and four Sub-Zone CoordinatorDirectives were published during the month

h. Administrative Assistance Team
(1) Approximately 80 hours of administrative assistance wererendered to various units within the Division. Numerous units were con-tacted via land phone to correct errors in Personnel Accounting and adviseon the Manpower Management System.
(2) During the periods 20-23 February 1969 and 25-28 February1969 two courses on the Manpower Management System were held at DivisionHeadquarters. The subject courses consisted of lectures, practical workprobloes and questions and answer reriods on the new Manpower Management
stem. These two courses were taught to a total of 46 students. Theresults of the classes were outstanding.

b. Portable snack bars selling canned snacks and soft drinkshave been opened at the Dong Ha Comanbat Base Air Terminal and theQuang Tri Exchange Location. Both snack bars have been well received.
c. A new troop store was opened at the rock crusher site.
d. Requests have been made to the Danang Area Exchange Coamanderfor a contract to operate eXchange laundry and barber concessions.
3. Information Services
a. The Informational Services Office continued its coverage ofthe Division's activities. During the month of February 3,010 writtenFleet Home Town news releases and 128 tape recorded Fleet Home Townradio interviews were prepared and forwarded to the Fleet Home TownNews Center, Great Lakes, Illinois. In addition, a total of 65 ne*sand feature articles supported by 45 photographs and 16 photo captionreleases were also prepared and forwarded to CIB, III ~AF for release andfurther dissemination. a. Traffic violations totaled 358 for the period. A total of 27traffic accidents were reported during the period resulting in oneVietnamese civilian fatality. A total of 134 Class I offenses and 77Class II offenses were committed during the period.
b. A daily average of three prisoners were detained in the P.O.W.facility at Dong Ha during this reporting period.
8. Career Planner
a. During the month of February 1969 a total of 11 Career Planningreporting units (Battalion/Battery) were visited at least once.

10. Staff Judge Advocate. During the month of February 1969 the Officeof the Staff Judge Advocate reviewed 16 special courte-martial and 22sumnary courts-martial. Sixteen Judge Advocates were assigned as counselfor respondents at Administrative Discharge Boards; 104 for specialcourts-emartial; six to act as Government and defense counsel and Invest-igating Officers in Artidle 32 investigations; and one to conduct aspecial fact-finding investigation. The Legal Assistance Officer hand-led 96 cases and two battalions were inspected. The Division JudicialActivity received 58 cases and of these, 16 cases were disposed of.
11 Chaplain Information
a. The chaplains of the 3d Marine Division conducted 341 Sundayworship services with an attendance of 7,916 during February. Weekdayworship services numbered 302 with a total attendance of 4,387. In-cluded in the above figures are 337 communion services with 2,890 cnommun-icants.
b. Eemorial services conducted were 30. The total attendance was15131.
c. There were three worship services conducted during February bylay-leaders within the Division with a total attendance of 27.
d. There were 11 Bible classes held with a total attendance of 90.
e. On 1 February 1969 Chaplain (CPT) Bruce FR~YER, USA, XXIV CorpsJewish Chaplain, visited Jewish personnel in 3d ~arine Division TAOR andconducted services in Dong Ha.
f. Catholic chaplains of I Corps had a day of recollection at St John'sSeminary in Danang on 20 Feb. LCDR Robert C. FRANKLIN 574630/4100, CHC, USN,11th :ng Battalion, served as the Retreat Master.
g. The chaplains of the 3d Marine Division delivered 22 lectures,ith a total attendance of 432 M5rines.

1. There were 57 lifts out of V#B to 11 locations for a total ofl14s/t or resupply.
2. on 3 Feb 8600 dixie cups and 126 gal. of bul icecream was pickedup at FLI, Danang and transported by tru-k to Dong Ha.
3. On the 4th approximately 7500 Dixie Sups were transported to V3Bfor issue on the 5th.

1. 'here were 40 lifts out of V3B to 6 locations for a total of63 s/t.
2. MIB-t has completed work on the Ghia Bridge. Route 9 is now opento VJB at 1000.

4. 60MM Mortors are due up from FLj today. 13 M60 M1D and 5 81 mm mortorswere floated from FLSG-Bravo' s maintenance float yesterday.
5. The 3B8s are moving thee Rock 3rusher from 3ALU To Dong Ha4 onSunday 9 Feb. It is an extremely wide load and will create a delay inthe normal movement of traffic.
6. Yesterday there were 4 helo parachute drops in Dewey 3anyon.
7. The first drop to this location (11851258) DALLAS to 2nd Bn9th Marines could not be observed due to the area being socked in.A second flight was aborted and returned to Quang Tri.
8. At 1530 2 flights departed Quang Tri for these 2 ARVN positions(21641750) and (22201535) LIGHTNING. One drop was 300 meters offthe other was 1000 meters off, Both were recovered.
9. At 1730 2 flights departed QT for the same pesitions. Howeverone flight droped it load at thib position (18252124) and picked up3 med-evacs, the other returned to LS A.
10. At 1700 a '-130 from Danang made two drops to the ARVN. Onedrop was 1000 meters off, the other 4000 meters off. Both wereobserved but neither were recovered
11. Air delivery people will move their gear from QT to V3B. Theywill OP~0N to the Shore Party unit there.

1. There were 27 lifts out of V3B to 6 location for a total of58 sit.
2. The Land ilearing 'o. cleared 576 acres and no mine incidentswere reported.
3. At this location (21641750) 2 drops were made and both wererecovered.
U. At this location (18252124) TORNADO there were 4 drops. 2 were notrecovered and 2 were recovered.
5. At this location (22201535) South of LIGHTNING. There 3 dropsand all were recovered.

5. At 22201535 there were 7 drops, all recovered.That is where3/9 presently is.

2. Contact has been made with the Ghou Hoi Ienter in QT relating toimproving the defensive positions there, A composite Marine Unit willcomence the installation of triple concertina enclosure around thehamlet and improve existing defenses. A completion date is aroundthe 14 of February.

2. Due to the fact that the l1th Eng. on Route 8B lost anothervehicle yesterday for a tbtal of 4 vehicles lost since the projectwas started, all by mines. Div. Eng. has recommended to 2hth corpsthat the project be reveiwed in light of the cost of the work as tothe gains. The 24th lorps engeneer will discuss the matter withthe 'iv Eng 0 in an attempt to develop a new approach to the problems.

b. Distribution of Commodities. 7,129 pounds of food, 169 poundsof clothing, 80 pounds of soap, 1 blacksmith kit, 2 midwife kits, 1P. T. kit, 1550 school kits and 100 refills for school kits were dis-tr- buted.
c. Health and Sanitation. 5 health workers received training.
d. Educational Efforts. 38 English classes were held for 790
people. 35 people attended vocational training classes.
