DECONTAMINATION
Decontamination is the process of removing potentially harmful contaminants from exposed
individuals and equipment in order to:
•Reduce the spread of contamination from the work area, and
•Prevent inadvertent and unnecessary contact with contaminated materials
DECON LAYOUT
THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO SET UP FOR DECON, HOW YOU DECON DEPENDS UPON TYPE OF CONTAMINATS, THE AMOUNT, LEVEL OF PROTECTION, WORK, LOCATION AND REASON FOR LEAVING SITE
DECONTAMINATION PLAN
SHOULD PROVIDE FOR:
•Proper level of decontamination
•Suitable location
•Decontamination worker protection
•Appropriate decon methods
•Program evaluation
•Disposal of decontamination materials
•Emergency decontamination procedures
DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURES
•Assume personnel grossly contaminated
•Determine level of protection and specific equipment to be worn
•Remove protective clothing starting with the most heavily contaminated, ending with the least contaminated
•Wash and rinse each piece of protective clothing at least once
•Separate each operation by a minimum of 3 ft.
•Adapt original decon plan to actual conditions
DECONTAMINATION TEAM
DETERMINE LEVEL OF PROTECTION BY:
•Expected or visible contamination on entry team
•Types of contaminate and associated respiratory and skin hazards
•Contaminate concentrations in the contamination reduction corridor (warm zone)
•Results of swipe tests
