Do’s anD Don’ts of outDoor exercising outsiDe During summer

Outdoor Summer Exercises Do’s:• Drink plenty of fluids. Drink 15-20 minutes before beginning your workout and every 15 minutes throughout the exercise.• Eat regularly. Include lots of fruits and vegetables. Aside from being nutritious, fruits also tend to help with hydration.• Wear light, loose fitting clothes that breath. Cotton is always a good choice. Consider clothing designed to wick sweat away.• Wear sunscreen.

Outdoor Summer Exercises Don’ts:• Don’t try to diet by sweating. Any decrease in the scale would simply be a result of water loss, not fat reduction.• Don’t adapt the “no pain, no gain” motto. Ignoring your body’s signals could be dangerous. Heat-related illnesses come with warning signs. • Don’t forget to drink plenty of liquid when swimming. As with any land exercises, you need to regularly replenish lost fluids when in the pool.• Avoid physical activity during the hottest part of the day, which usually is between 10 AM and 3 PM.• Avoid extreme changes in temperature. Don’t hop from being extremely hot and sweating excessively right into an ice cold, air-conditioned environment.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 17 - 19, 2012In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Go to www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html for details on included items and restrictions.

gardeN tiPs for august• Time now to make plans for fall land-scaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most dam-age. Use Dursban to stop the damage.• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf.• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

BOY SCOUTS

Texas Representative Duane Bohac honored four Eagle Scouts at their court of honor: from left: Ryan Patrick Andrew Juergens, Rep. Bohac, Bishop Ron Barrow (leader of the church sponsoring Troop 996), Larry Heki and Quinn Taylor.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 996 Four ScoutS Honored witH eagle rank

Four Eagle Scouts held a combined court of honor celebrating their attainment of Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank. The four young men, all of troop 996, sponsored by the Copperfield Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are Andrew Juergens, Larry Heki, Quinn Taylor and Ryan Patrick. Only about five percent of Boy Scouts persevere to reach the rank of Eagle, so having four from one troop at the same time is outstanding.

Each Eagle Scout has completed at least 21 merit badges and has served in a series of leadership roles and he must complete a self-directed major project. The accomplishment says much about the character of the young man, but also much about his scout leaders and parents, who have encouraged him over many years. During the June 27th court of honor ceremony, Texas Rep. Duane Bohac honored the Eagles as guest speaker.

Andrew Juergens is the son of Kurt and Gretchen Juergens. He is about to start his senior year at Langham Creek High School. His Eagle project was to collect used baseball and softball equipment, donated to RBI (Recycled Baseball Items). The baseball equipment will be used for inner city baseball teams and the softball equipment will be sent to troops overseas.

Larry Heki is the son of Scott and Charlotte Heki. He graduated from Langham Creek High School in 2010. Larry actually completed his Eagle requirements last summer, but left for a year of study at Brigham Young University before there was time to celebrate with a court of honor. His Eagle project was done for the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District’s Nature Trails facility. It was a conserva-tion project in which he led and participated in the removal of an invasive species of water plant, the parrotfeather, a noxious weed that is a native water plant of the Amazon River in South America. He also built two new floating platforms to place in the pond for the turtles, ducks and other wildlife to use to sun themselves or to rest on. Larry has been studying chemistry and leaves in late August to serve as a missionary for two years in Finland.

Quinn Taylor is the son of Tim and Janet Taylor and the third in the family to earn the rank of Eagle. His project was completed for Houston Marine Moms. He organized the collection and sorting of donations used for care packages sent to Marines serving in Afghanistan. Quinn is a well-known basketball player for Langham Creek High School. He will be attending Utah State University on a basketball scholarship this fall, studying civil engineering. After his freshman year he plans to serve as a missionary for two years before returning to sports and school.

Ryan Patrick is also a basketball player. It was through his basket-ball friendship with Quinn Taylor, starting in third grade, that Ryan learned of scouting and got involved in Troop 996. He is the son of Rich and Jeannie Patrick. His project was to make large animal feeders for Boys and Girls Country. Many of the students at Boys and Girls Country participate in FFA (Future Farmers of America) competitions with the hope of earning college scholarships. Ryan’s project was to help them in their efforts. Ryan will be attending Texas A&M University this fall, in the Mays School of Business.

HoMeScHool Pack 164Cub Scouts is a fun way to teach boys about character, respect, respon-sibility and many other traits. Pack 164 is a Christian, home school Cub Scout Pack that services the Greater West Houston/Katy area. Pack 164 promotes service to God, to country and to others. If you are interested and your son is entering 1st through 5th grade, please contact “Van” VanZant at [email protected] or at 281-851-8374. We will also have an informational meeting and registration Thursday, August 16th at 7 PM at the Bear Creek Community Center.

Cy-Fair Women’s ClubWomen serving the Community

Making a difference is what we strive for all year long. It was an honor creating the Breast Cancer Pillows this month and it was a pleasure to meet our scholarship recipients during our June meet-ing. We wish them all great success in their personal endeavors. We are very proud to have had the opportunity to support several organizations again this year. A few of these organizations are Reach Unlimited, Mission of Yahweh, Cy-Hope, Cypress Assistance Ministries, Magnificat House and the Glory Ranch. Our goal is to continue assisting our community and making a personal difference. Please remember to come join us in august, as we are all looking forward to a SPA like experience to help us prepare for our very special marketplace event “Shop Til You Drop” on september 8th. Mark your calendars. You don’t want to miss this event! CWC is a service organization that gives back to the community, so all funds raised will go right back to the community in scholarships for graduating high school seniors, at Lone Star College, Cy-Fair and grants to other non-profits in our community as well. Membership for the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is open to all ladies in Northwest Houston/Cypress neighborhoods. Currently we meet the first thursday of most months at West Houston Church of Christ. Our meetings begin with social time and refreshments at 7:00 PM immediately followed by a program at 7:30 PM. The church is located at the corner of Queenston and West Road. Our monthly meetings are not only educational and enjoyable, but they develop lasting fellowships. We look forward to meeting you there! Please contact Susan McLeroy, Membership Chair at [email protected] if you have any questions about our club or need directions to the church.

General admission is $50 per person, Texas Hold’em Entry is an add’l $20 per person. The evening will in-clude Casino Games, a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament,

Hors d’oeuvres, Dancing, Door Prizes, Raffle and a Silent Auction.

In order to make our fundraiser as successful as possible, we are looking to the good neighbors of our Community for their support. The Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization as defined by the Internal Rev-enue Code, Section 501(c) 3 and all qualified donations made to ZTA Foundation are tax-deductable, so please consider helping us make a difference in the lives of women everywhere.

The Pink Tie Affair fundraising event, through the ZTA Foundation, supports breast cancer education and awareness, the Komen Race for the Cure® Survivor program, scholarships, educational programming and leadership development. Through our affiliations with The Susan G. Komen Foundation, Yoplait, The NFL and Self Magazine, the ZTA Foundation has donated millions of dollars to this worthy cause. As one of the leading causes of death in women, breast cancer affects us all.

We had a great turnout for last year’s first annual, raising $7000 toward our cause and anticipate an even better 2012. If you are interested in purchasing tickets or other ways of contributing to the event, please contact Natalie Taylor at [email protected] or www.cypresszta.com, our website. We hope to have your support and to see you there!

KiMberly AKiMbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, november 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007).

Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-win-ning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attach-ment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

(a barbershop ChorUs)We are a ladies daytime chorus with approximately 30 members. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 30 years. We sing old favorites and contemporary tunes arranged in the barbershop style. The four parts creating the barbershop sound are Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass.

We rehearse friday mornings from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center located at 2501 Westerland, off Westheimer and Gessner. We love to have visitors and even more when you decide to join our chorus.

For additional information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or [email protected] (email).

We perform two types of shows each year. Currently we are singing a selection of patriotic songs, Johnny Mathis’ “Chances Are,” Perry Como’s “Hot Diggity Dog” and other fun tunes. You’ll be singing along with us before you know it.

Our Christmas show includes old favorites, but also includes new fun tunes with props, narratives and choreography. We’ll begin preparing that program in october and book performances for the first two weeks in December. Come visit any friday and see how much fun you can have with us.

PREGNANCY HELP CENTER OF WEST HOUSTON DIAPERS & WIPES DRIVE - WESTLAND BAPTIST

Left to right: Eric Heki, Larry Heki and Aaron Heki

Three BroThers Will serve as MissionariesTwins Eric and Aaron Heki, along with their younger brother Larry, are about to serve as missionaries in far-flung coun-tries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Eric will be sent to Durban, South Africa for two years. Aaron will be serving nearby in Johannesburg, South Africa. Larry will be serving in Helsinki, Finland. All will be starting in the Mission Training Center in Provo, Utah. Larry will arrive there late August, a couple of weeks before his brothers and will stay a few weeks longer for language training - although most of the Finnish language will come once he’s in the country speaking it full time.

All three graduated from Langham Creek High School in 2011. All three played in the marching band there: Eric played trombone, Aaron played tuba and Larry played French horn. All three are Eagle Scouts, earning the BSA’s highest rank. Eric’s Eagle project was to build raised flower beds for Copperfield Estates independent senior living center. Aaron’s project was to put up a world map on the

side of the building at Horne Elementary. Larry, who held his Eagle court of honor on July 4th, built two turtle platforms and reclaimed a lake at the Cy-Fair ISD Nature Trails.

The boys are sons of Scott and Charlotte Heki. The parents are justifiably proud of these three sons and feel it a rare privilege to be sending all three off to serve at the same time. The Heki family has lived in the Copperfield area for about 15 years and attend church in the Copperfield Ward of the Katy Stake of the LDS Church, on Longenbaugh at Park Falls.

SALES TAX HOLIDAYAUGUST 17 - 19, 2012

In 2012, Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 17th, 18th and 19th - the state’s annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take ad-vantage of the sales tax holiday.
