ISLAND DEF JAM TOP LABEL IN 2006Atlantic, Interscope, Zomba, and RCA Round Out The Top Five

Island Def Jam Music Group is this year’s #1 label, according to Mediabase’s annual year-end airplay recap. Led by such acts as Nickelback, Ludacris, Ne-Yo, and Rihanna, IDJMG topped all labels with a 14.1% share of the total airplay pie. Island Def Jam is the #1 label at Top 40 and Hot AC, coming in second at Rhythmic, Urban, Urban AC, Mainstream Rock, and Active Rock, and ranking at #3 at Alternative.

Atlantic was second with a 12.0% share. Atlantic had huge hits from the likes of James Blunt, Sean Paul, Yung Joc, Cassie, and Rob Thomas -- who all scored huge airplay at multiple formats. Atlantic ranks #1 at Rhythmic and Urban, second at Top 40 and AC, and third at Hot AC and Mainstream Rock. Atlantic did all of this separately from sister label Lava, who actually broke the top 15 labels thanks to Gnarls Barkley and Buckcherry.

Always powerful Interscope was third with 8.4%. Interscope was #1 at Alternative, second at Top 40 and Triple A, and fifth at Rhythmic. Interscope was led by All-American Rejects, Black Eyed Peas, Fergie, and Nine Inch Nails.

Zomba posted a very strong fourth place showing. The label group garnered an 8.0% market share, with massive hits from Justin Timberlake, Three Days Grace, Tool and Chris Brown, along with the year’s #1 Urban AC hit from Anthony Hamilton. Zomba was third at Rhythmic and Urban, fourth at Top 40 and Urban AC, and fifth at Active Rock.

Rounding out the top five is RCA Music Group. RMG had a huge year at Urban AC and AC, where they nabbed the top slot. The label also ranked fifth at Mainstream Rock.

ISLAND DEF JAM TOP 40 CHART TOPPERInterscope, Atlantic Rank 2-3; Epic Scores Top Two Songs

Besides being the overall label champion, Island Def Jam also scored a big win at Top 40 this year. The label racked up an astounding 18.7% chart share, which also marked the largest chart share for any label, in any format, this year. Considering the competitive nature of the Top 40 format, this is a huge accomplishment. Island Def Jam scored the victory with a diverse mix of artists including Rihanna, Nickelback, Ludacris, Fall Out Boy and Ne-Yo. Two other labels scored more than a 10% share at Top 40. Interscope ranks second for 2006 with 13.6%, catapulted by key performances from the likes of All-American Rejects, Pussycat Dolls, Fergie, and Snow Patrol. Atlantic comes in third with 10.4% of the airplay this year. Sean Paul, Cassie, Staind, and James Blunt were the airplay leaders for Atlantic. Zomba was fourth within the Top 40 format. The label scored huge #1 hits from Justin Timberlake, as well as Chris Brown, along with solid performances from Nick Lachey and newcomer T-Pain. While Epic ranks fifth overall with 7.2%, the label has the bragging rights for the year’s two most played songs. “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield and “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira ranked #1 and #2 respectively, as well as two big hits from Fray. New artists that broke through during the chart year included: Bedingfield, Fray, Chris Brown, Panic! At The Disco, and Cassie.

ATLANTIC, IDJMG DOMINATE URBANTop Two Labels Account For More Than One-Third Of The Chart Share

Atlantic and Island Def Jam scored the top two positions in the Urban format this year in dominating fashion. Atlantic replicated its Rhythmic share of 18.0%, while Island Def Jam was a solid second at 15.5%. Between the two labels, their combined 35.5% gives them over one-third of the chart share in the format. Fueling Atlantic were Young Dro, and two songs each from Yung Joc and T.I., which all finished among the top 20. Cassie and Juvenile also contributed to Atlantic’s huge year. Over at Island Def Jam, the label’s commanding second place finish was led by two songs by Ne-Yo, with both landing among the year’s top 20. Other key acts for IDJMG included Ludacris, Mariah Carey, Shawnna, and Rick Ross. Zomba had a solid year and garnered a third place ranking. The label shined with strong performances from Chris Brown, T-Pain, Anthony Hamilton, Kelis, and Ciara. The #4 slot goes to Columbia, thanks in part to the sophomore effort from Lyfe Jennings, who finished the year at #16. Columbia also had major success from Beyonce (who had multiple hits), Three 6 Mafia, and the new Bow Wow. Rounding out the top five was Geffen, who had the year’s biggest hit from Mary J. Blige by an overwhelming margin. Blige really drove the year for Geffen, along with strong success from Avant and hip-hop newcomer Jibbs.

ARISTA RETURNS TO #1 IN COUNTRYUnderwood, Paisley Lead The Way; Capitol, MCA Take Second And Third

Arista Nashville recaptures the coveted Label of the Year crown it wore between 2001-2004. The label garnered an astonishing 14.8% chart share, the highest percentage of the Mediabase-powered chart era. Propelling them to those lofty heights were 17 charted records (11 of which are in the top 100 of 2006), 11 top 15 hits, and six number ones that occupied the top spot for 14 weeks. Leading the way for VP/Promotion Skip Bishop and his team were Carrie Underwood, who posted three hits that spent an incredible 10 weeks at #1, and Brad Paisley, whose pair of chart-toppers held the #1 position for a total of three weeks. Capitol, last year’s top imprint, slots in this year at #2, with an impressive 10.6% chart share. Sr. VP Jimmy Harnen and his crew posted 16 charted records, nine top 15 hits, nine in the top 100, and three number ones by Dierks Bentley. MCA moved from fourth last year to third in 2006, on the strength of 15 charted tunes, 10 top 15 hits, and four smashes that spent nine weeks at #1. Kenny Chesney was the secret weapon for BNA in 2006. The label claims the #4 slot, while Chesney has four charted records in the Country top 50. Rounding out the top five is Lyric Street. 2006 was a banner year for the label, with multiple hits from Rascal Flatts, including the #1 Country song for the year, “What Hurts The Most.”

RCA, ATLANTIC IN PHOTO FINISH AT ACLess Than 150 Spins Separate Top Two; Other WMG Labels In Top Five

In a tight battle, the RCA Music Group edges out Atlantic to take the top spot at AC this year. RMG was fueled by big performances from American Idol alumni Kelly Clarkson, Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood. RMG beat out second place Atlantic by less than 150 spins. Atlantic, however, lays claim to this year’s most played song, “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt. Atlantic also had a stellar year from Rob Thomas, who had the year’s sixth and ninth most played songs. Warner Bros. came in a strong third with a 10.3% chart share thanks to hits from Daniel Powter, Faith Hill, and the Goo Goo Dolls. Columbia ranked a solid fourth, as the label saw breakthrough years from Anna Nalick and Chris Rice, both scored songs in the top 15 most played. A third Warner Music Group label, Reprise, rounded out the top five, giving WMG three of this year’s top five labels at the format. Leading the Reprise charge was Michael Buble -- one of the AC format’s core artists in 2006. Buble had the eighth and 10th most played songs of the year.

NICKELBACK KEYS IDJMG HOT AC WINCanadian Superstars Dominate With Three Huge Hits

Island Def Jam, who were #1 overall and at Top 40, also score a win at Hot AC thanks to an enormous year from Nickelback. The Canadian rock group scores three songs among the top 20 most played with “Photograph” (#7), “Savin’ Me” (#8), and “Far Away” (#17). To give you an idea of how huge Nickelback was in 2006, they scored over 200,000 total spins this year on the three songs, and alone would’ve ranked eighth as their own label. IDJMG also had hits from Bon Jovi, Fall Out Boy, and Rihanna. A great year from Fray helped Epic claim the #2 spot. Fray scored the year’s most played song with “Over My Head (Cable Car)” and ranked 26th with “How To Save A Life.” Epic also had the year’s fourth most played song with “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. Howie Day and INXS also drove Epic’s strong 2006 performance in the Hot AC format. Atlantic scored a 10.9% chart share and nabbed this year’s third place ranking. The label had two songs in the top five: “Ever The Same” by Rob Thomas at #3 and “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt at #5. Staind also landed in the top 15, ranking 13th with “Right Here.” In fourth place was Warner Bros., who had the year’s second most played song with “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter. It was also a solid year for Warner Bros. stalwarts the Goo Goo Dolls, who ranked 12th with “Better Days” and 20th with “Stay With You.” Red Hot Chili Peppers also had a strong showing, slotting at #21 with “Dani California.” RCA Music Group came in fifth, driven by Kelly Clarkson, who had three songs in the top 30: “Walk Away” at #9, “Because Of You” at #11, and Behind These Hazel Eyes” at #28. Bo Bice, Santana, and Christina Aguilera were among other RMG artists who charted in Hot AC.

Coming in second was Island Def Jam achieving success from Nickelback and Stone Sour. The label also had hits from Roadrunner’s Black Stone Cherry and Theory Of A Deadman. Atlantic ranks third in the format, capturing this year’s #1 song with “Save Me” by Shinedown, along with “I Dare You” at #11 and “Heroes” at #30. VETERAN ACTS LEAD ALTERNATIVEInterscope, Warner Bros. Rely On Core Acts To Drive Chart Share

Interscope pulls off a victory in the Alternative format thanks in large part to a great year from Nine Inch Nails, who had two of the year’s top 20 songs. Also performing well for Interscope were AFI, Audioslave, Snow Patrol and Wolfmother. Interscope was the only label to achieve more than a 10% chart share. However, the race for #2 was much more competitive, as only a 1% share separated the #2-5 positions. Warner Bros. came in second with an 8.4% chart share – thanks to the venerable Red Hot Chili Peppers. The group had the year’s #1 song with “Dani California” and the #21 song with “Tell Me Baby.” Avenged Sevenfold landed in the top 15 for Warner Bros. with “Bat Country.” In third was Island Def Jam, who scored with Fall Out Boy at #10, Stone Sour at #19, and the sophomore Killers effort at #23. Virgin had a very strong year, moving into fourth place. One of the year’s biggest stories was the development of 30 Seconds To Mars – who rode a long chart run to the #6 song of the year. Solid airplay from the Gorillaz in the early part of the year, and a couple of hits from Korn also spurred success for Virgin. In fifth place was Atlantic – thanks to key performances from Shinedown, Death Cab For Cutie, and Jet.

COLUMBIA REIGNS SUPREME AT TRIPLE AInterscope, Warner Bros. Battle It Out In Tight Race For Second

Columbia has always had a nice roster of acts that score airplay at Triple A, and this year was no exception. The label used hits from proven acts John Mayer, Train, and Bob Dylan - but developing hits from Mat Kearney and Aqualung catapulted the label over the top and into the #1 slot for 2006. Kearney scored Columbia’s biggest hit in the format with “Nothing Left To Lose” at #8.

It was a very competitive battle for second, with Interscope grabbing the runner-up position, with a 9.3% chart share. Driving airplay for Interscope this year were Keane, Snow Patrol, U2, and Feist.

Warner Bros. ranks a close third with a 9.2% chart share. Veteran acts Tom Petty, Goo Goo Dolls, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers all charted for Warner Bros. this year.

In fourth place is Virgin who broke through with two of the year’s top five hits from K.T. Tunstall. “Black Horse & The Cherry Tree” ranked second, while “Suddenly I See” came in fifth. Virgin also had two hits from Ben Harper at #15 and #44. Three labels finished with identical 7.3% chart shares – but Epic nosed out Reprise and Atlantic for fifth place by less than 300 spins. For Epic, they had two of the year’s top 10 hits with Fray (# 4 and #9) and Augustana coming in at #25.
