Defeating Discouragement 1. Remember God’s mercy 2 Corinthians 4:1 (ESV) Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. Genesis 6:5 (ESV) The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Matthew 24:37 (NIV) As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Exodus 6:9 (NLT) Moses told the people what the Lord had said, but they wouldn’t listen anymore. They had become too discouraged by the increasing burden of their slavery. Psalm 42:5 (NLT) Why am I so discouraged? Why am I sad? I will put my hope in God. Look to Jesus. 2. Be authentic 2 Corinthians 4:2 (ESV) But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. 2 Corinthians 4:2 (NLT) We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God. 3. Choose proper friends 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 (ESV) And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 1 Peter 4:8 (NIV) Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 2 kinds of friends: Casual friends are the result of circumstances Close friends are the result of choices Proverbs 27:19 (TLB) A mirror reflects a man’s face, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses. Proverbs 12:26 (NIV) The righteous choose their friends carefully . . . 4 kinds of people to avoid: Lazy 2 Thessalonians 3:6 (GNT) Our friends, we command you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to keep away from all believers who are living a lazy life and who do not follow the instructions that we gave them. Angry Proverbs 22:24-25 (GNT) Don’t make friends with people who have hot, violent tempers. You might learn their habits and not be able to change. Immoral 1 Corinthians 5:9 (TEV) I told you not to associate with immoral people. Unbelieving 2 Corinthians 6:14 (NLT) Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. Choose close friends who will: Challenge me mentally Proverbs 13:20 (NIV) He who walks with the wise grows wise . . . Support me emotionally Proverbs 17:17 (NIV) A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. Strengthen me spiritually 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV) Encourage one another and build each other up. 4. Keep the main thing the main thing 2 Corinthians 4:5 (ESV) For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 2 Corinthians 4:5 (GW) Our message is NOT about ourselves. It is about Jesus Christ as the Lord. We are merely your servants for Jesus’ sake. 5. Relax in my limits 2 Corinthians 4:7 (ESV) But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

2 Corinthians 4:1 (ESV) Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.
