Adelaide ADF members and their children came along to Bowland, Elizabeth to enjoy some quality time together before the end of the school holidays. DCO recognises that families have been managing a number of absences from home over the recent months, and this was an opportunity for members and their children to reconnect and have a fun afternoon together.

On Saturday 01 September, DCO facilitated an event for ADF members and their partners to “Cruise and Connect” the Port River and hopefully spot some dolphins along the way. This event was promoted as a child free event to recognise the differences within ADF families and a concerted effort by DCO to ensure we capture and meet the needs of an ever widening definition of family. Guests were treated to a two hour cruise along the Port River with some light refreshments. From speaking with attendees it was obvious that many people did not know each other, but that didn’t stop the conversation flowing and some laughs along the way, along with several dolphin sightings! Our group also put together information about their favourite spots they’ve found in Adelaide, both tourist attractions and local restaurants they enjoy to share with the wider group.

Outside of the DCO event, the Dolphin Explorer is a really affordable family activity for those interested. We noticed that groups were able to bring their own food on board as a way to keep costs down and the staff were very accommodating and friendly to all.

Community Groups North East Defence Community Inc.

The North East Defence Community Inc. (NEDC) is a tri-service group based at RAAF Base Edinburgh – NEDC organise events and activities to help Defence families & couples develop a support network. It's all about making new friends and enjoying Defence life in Adelaide.

Little Rockets

In September the North East Defence Community enjoyed two great evening catch ups at Little Rockets Play Café in Munno Para. On Friday the 7th and Friday the 28th around 80 NEDC members met up there for dinner, a play and of course some fairy bread. It was a great opportunity for working families and school aged children to participate in an NEDC event. Everyone had such a great time, evident by the smiling faces, and there were even some families that found the energy to stay until closing time at 9pm!!

School Holiday fun

The North East Defence Community held several events over the October School Holidays. One of the most well-liked events was Playgroup at the Park. Around 35 NEDC members met at Carisbrooke Park to play on the equipment and with each other.

No 6 Wing, Australian Air Force Cadets The Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) is a youth development organisation set in a military and aviation environment, administered and actively supported by the Royal Australian Air Force.

The AAFC offers a wide range of activities for young adults including drill & ceremonial, aviation, aircraft recognition, fieldcraft and radio communications. As Cadets progress in seniority, they may be selected to undertake leadership courses toward promotion, gaining skills in management, public speaking and operational planning.

All cadets can get up to three opportunities a year to pilot a light aircraft for free (under the supervision of a qualified flying instructor). Cadets can undertake formal flying training courses, and can qualify to fly an aircraft solo at 15 (for gliding) and 16 (for power) – the minimum legal ages. Scholarships are available on a competitive basis to support flying studies.

Studies completed through the AAFC home training curriculum can be recognised for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), and most activities can also be counted towards the Duke of Edinburgh International Award.

The AAFC also provides opportunities for adults to be involved – as Civilian Instructors, as uniformed Instructors and Officers of Cadets, and as ADF Support.

ANZAC DAY School Awards

Jacqui Langstreth our energetic and much-loved Defence School Transition Aide (DSTA) works across Playford Primary School and Catherine McAuley Catholic School. In April, Jacqui entered the Campus into the 2018 State and National ANZAC Day Schools Awards. This entry incorporated many multi-faceted activities and aspects of honouring the ANZAC tradition.

The Campus schools were lucky to secure a DVA grant to create a Remembrance Garden which the students have been busy weeding and preparing for planting. They selected the most suitable plants including plenty of rosemary which will form a hedge of honour and designing and painting the pavers ready for the ANZAC Commemorative Assembly.

There were many activities that took place in the lead up to the Campus ANZAC Service.

Six different classes from across the Campus decided to honour our 3 Military Services by painting each of their emblems onto boards that will be displayed at special assemblies and around our Remembrance Garden in the years to come.

ANZAC DAY cont. This amazing teamwork from students and staff at the Playford/McAuley Campus has resulted in gaining National recognition and the presentation of a plaque, prize money and winning the South Australian and National ANZAC Schools Awards for 2018 in the Primary section.

Many thanks to Jacqui for organising the events and also for her commitment to honour the ANZACS through the Schools Awards application. Mrs Lorraine Davies and Mrs Angela Walsh should also be acknowledged for their invaluable expertise and management of the DSTA role.
