Film fest at district jail

Tribune News ServiceDehradun, August 4 The Dehradun edition of the CMS Vatavaran Biodiversity Film Festival held an innovative film screening session at the district jail here. An event of this kind has been organised for the first time on the premises of any prison of the state.

The event portrayed environmentally relevant issues on celluloid aimed at increasing the knowledge and creating awareness about the biodiversity surrounding human beings.

Around 500 inmates, including women, attended the session. Ramdev’s aide Balkrishan currently lodged in the Dehradun jail was also among the audience.

Inaugurating the session, chief guest on the occasion Narendra Singh Rawat, UttarakhandKranti Dal (Panwar) leader, appreciated the noble idea and said, “Such kind of events will spread awareness among inmates and encourage them to contribute to the environment.”

Festival coordinator Avinash Ujjwal said it was a noble opportunity for the inmates to be part of such an event which would increase their knowledge and encourage them to contribute to the environment.

Also present on the occasion were District Jail Superintendent B Pandey, Deputy Jailor SK Sukhija and Conservator of Forest SS Rasaily.

The screening session at the district jail marked the concluding ceremony of the six-day long film festival which was being organised at 25 venues across the city.

Film festival on biodiversity to begin on July 30 India’s premier environment and wildlife film festival and forum, the fifth CMS Vatavaran Biodiversity Film Festival and Forum will begin in Dehradun on July 30. The film fest being jointly organised by CMS Environment and Uttarakhand Forest Department will be inaugurated by Governor Aziz Qureshi as the chief guest at the Raj Bhawan and will continue till August 4. Festival coordinator PriyaVerma of CMS Environment said this while addressing the mediapersons along with the principal chief conservator of forests Raghu Bir Singh Rawat and other department officials. Verma said that Dehradun is one of the five cities including Jaipur, Goa, Kolkata and Hyderabad where this festival is being organised. “About 60 award winning films will be screened in 25 different locations in Dehradun during the next six days. Our research showed that environmental issues received comparatively lesser space in the media so this biodiversity film festival and forum is being organised in order to increase the interest of the media, raise public awareness and organisations’ interest on environmental issues and to nurture a new breed of film makers. A total of 30 organisations are partners in organising this event in Dehradun,” she said. During the festival the Governor will present awards to three green ambassadors apart from which an award-winning film on the Rajaji National Park will also be screened on the occasion, added Verma. PCCF RBS Rawat said that this event provides an opportunity to showcase the rich biodiversity of Uttarakhand. The movies selected in this festival will be screened at the XI Conference of Parties (COP) on Convention of Biological Diversity to be attended by delegates from around the world in Hyderabad in October this year. According to the event organisers, the biodiversity film festival and forum will showcase best of green films in addition to a host of activities including a media roundtable, filmmaking workshop, panel discussion, open forum, eco-tour on healing the forest and a quiz — all on biodiversity theme. The 25 venues include university, colleges, schools, village, paramilitary forces campus and the district jail among others. The theme of CMS VATAVARAN 2012 travelling festival is “Biodiversity Conservation” and is in sync with India hosting the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) 11th Conference of Parties (CoP11) in October 2012 in Hyderabad.

4. http://uttarakhandnews2k.blogspot.in/2012/08/media-turns-focus-to-environmental.html

Media turns focus to environmental issues The media in Uttarakhand has elicited focus on various important issues and public movements related to the environment like the issue of carbon credits which was first raised in Uttarakhand before any other Indian State. However, there is need for developing trust between the journalistic fraternity and the forest and wildlife fraternity to facilitate journalism which raises awareness on both the environmental problems and solutions.

These were some of the views which were expressed during the media roundtable on reshaping the future of environmental journalism organised as part of the CMS Vatavaran Biodiversity Film Festival in Dehradun. Centre for Media Studies chairman N BhaskaraRao said that research in 2000 showed that only one per cent of prime-time news space was dedicated to environmental issues. He said that Dehradun is an inspiration for the others in India in the environmental aspect and requested the media to raise environmental issues more elaborately.

Former Wildlife Institute of India professor BC Choudhary said that media in India was instrumental in raising various environmental issues like limestone quarrying in Mussoorie which led to the formation of the Eco Task Force; pros and cons of Tehri dam; factors which led to the creation of Corbett Tiger Reserve; environmental and socio-cultural impact of regulation of surface water flow in the Ganga and other issues. Chief Conservator of Forests (Ecotourism) Rajiv Bhartari said that media in Uttarakhand has been reporting prominently on environmental issues but there is need for in-depth stories which also inform the public about how to prevent anomalies like forest fires.

Noted environmentalist Jagat Singh ‘Junglee’ said that many are interested in simply getting their names and photographs published in newspapers so journalists should ascertain whether the works claimed by such persons are actually executed as purported.

Conservator of Forests SS Rasaily said that both journalists and foresters should be honest to their profession and officials should not take constructive criticism negatively. He stressed on the need for developing trust between journalists and forest officials. Senior journalist JyotirmayThapliyal pointed out that though many officials are cooperative there are some who do not communicate with the media. Reports cannot be filed without authentic data from the department but this is not always easily available so the department should make this available on the internet.

CMS Vatavaran festival director Alka Tomar said that analysis of 19 English and Hindi newspapers in Dehradun revealed during in a period of six months 48 and 52 percent reports in English and Hindi newspapers respectively were on environmental issues. Senior journalist PremPratap Singh and ArjunKaintura of Radio Khushi also expressed their views.

Ecologist’s concern over environment in state 10,000 villages face water shortage despite several glaciers

Tribune News Service

Dehradun, August 1CMS Vatavaran hosted a panel discussion on challenges to biodiversity of Uttarakhand from climate change at the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education Auditorium today.

Taking part in the deliberations, founder of Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organisation (HESCO) and renowned ecologist Anil Joshi spoke about the wisdom of farmers. He further stated: “It is certainly not the first time that the world is facing an environment crisis. These issues are linked to the villages and not to metros like Delhi. We require an inclusive approach. Our state has several glaciers but still over 10,000 villages suffer form water scarcity. For any positive change we do not need science alone; we need tradition involved with science. We most definitely require a resource-based economy. In India, the richest in resources are poor and the poorest in resources are rich. India will soon require oxygen booths.”

Other speakers gave presentations on various aspects like species, temperature, seed germination, Himalayan glaciers, black carbon, Uttarakhand as a water capital and water problems. A discussion on depleting rivers was also held. The speakers concentrated on collective community growth.

The discussion targeted on focusing Uttarakhand as a hub of biodiversity with an estimated 7,000 species of plants along side several rare and endangered species of herbal and aromatic plants. They stated the importance of conserving Uttarakhand’s biodiversity to keep danger at bay.

Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests DVS Khati, Deputy Director General (Ext), Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, SaibalDasgupta, scientist, Wildlife Insitute of India, RuchiBadola, were prominent participants in the discussions.

Further, the second day of movie screenings was yet again enjoyed by students of various schools. Movies on environment were screened at Jaswant Modern Senior Secondary School, Doon University, The Asian School, Welham Girls' School, Welham Boys' School, Merico Industries and Guru Nanak Fifth Centenary School.

The most exciting phase of the festival today was a green film-making workshop that took place in Doon University itself and Malsi Deer Park. Celebrated photographer-film-maker GurmeetSapal taught the intricacies of filming wildlife to the participating students.

Encouraging students to participate in such endeavours, Doon University Vice-Chancellor V K Jain appreciated the efforts of the School of Communication and CMS Vatavaran. GurmeetSapal elaborated the functioning of a camera for students and explained the significance of concepts like picture composition, colour combination and frames.

A total of 26 students from six renowned institutions, Doon University, Sai Institute, Doon School, Welham Boys’ School, Jaswant Modern School and Guru Nanak Fifth Centenary School, Mussoorie, participated in the workshop.

Wildlife Film Festival from July 30 JotirmayThapliyal

Tribune News ServiceDehradun, July 12

For the first time, Uttarakhand will be a witness to an Environment and Wildlife Film Festival from July 30-August 04, 2012.

CMS Vatavaran, one of the most prestigious film festivals across the globe that has successfully positioned India as a vibrant destination for environment and wildlife film-making, has finally come to Uttarakhand and will hosting a film festival in Dehradun.

The inauguration ceremony in Dehradun is slated for July 30 at the Governor House followed by a round table conference at Manthan Hall in the state forest headquarters, the very next day.

On August 1, panel discussion on biodiversity will be held at the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education. Further a film-making workshop will be held on subsequent days at Doon University.

This, apart from environment and wildlife-centric films, will be screened at various venues across the Dehradun during the period. Some of the films are also expected to be based on environment and wildlife issues of Uttarakhand. Biodiversity conservation will be the theme of Dehradun film festival. The last edition of the festival was held in 2011 in Delhi.

India’s one and only environment and wildlife film festival – CMS Vatavaran - began its maiden run in 2002. It served a dual purpose – generating awareness on environmental issues, and lending recognition to the endeavours of environment and wildlife filmmakers.

The initiative has been supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

According to CMS Vatavaran, organisers said environment awareness in Uttarakhand kept much importance as the region had been facing environmental problems on account of various factors, including the stress caused by human activities, such as tourism, construction of dams and roads, mining and other developmental projects, overexploitation of aromatic and medicinal plants for commercial purposes, destruction of habitats, deforestation, lopping and over-grazing. Pollution, indiscriminate use of pesticides and illegal trade and trafficking of wild animals in the commercial market have also had an adverse impact on the environment and ecology of the region.

After Dehradun, the film festival is slated to travel to Jaipur, where the festival will be staged in September.

Media boom hasn’t helped growth: Expert Monday, 30 July 2012 21:58 Jaskiran Chopra n Dehradun Hits: 52 Chairman of the Centre for Media Studies, New Delhi, Dr N BhaskaraRao expressed concern that the “media boom” in the form of growing numbers of news channels over the past decade has not contributed to the growth and development of the country. “These news channels are all copy cats and have turned their viewers into copy cats too,” said DrRao while addressing students of mass communication at Doon University on Monday. He explained how advertisers, public relations agencies and marketing forces have become the “new

74

gatekeepers” of the media and brought a “paradigm shift” in the way media functions now. “They are all playing a jugalbandhi and mesmerising the viewers and making fools of them by showing them nonsense. Instead of giving the viewers what is in their interest, they are inducing them to watch the nonsense,” said DrRao, a pioneer of social research in India and an eminent mass communication expert with more than four decades of experience in the field. He called upon the young students to take up the “opportunity and challenge” of looking creatively with a “long-term vision” at the media scenario and work towards bringing about the much needed change. “You all have to liberate television from the trap it is caught in,” said the founder chairman of the Centre for Media Studies and acknowledged expert in public opinion, feedback and research methodologies DrRao has done extensive research in India on television effects, including on children and was responsible for benchmark studies on media and television policies. He said that it was strange that despite a three hundred per cent growth in news channels between 2000 and 2011, the growth in viewership was negligible. “No other country has witnessed such a boom in news channels. We have been monitoring all the channels and have found that they are not having any positive effect on development. This shows that merely chasing numbers is not enough. The quality of the content is very important,” he said. He said that television has become an addiction and channels are greatly affecting markets, lifestyles and behaviour. “TV is the source of the deviant behaviour seen in youngsters and it also promotes the greed element in human beings,” said the communication expert who is here in connection with the CMS Vatavaran Biodiversity Film Festival. DrRao said that the news channels have made no difference to governance, law and order and social issues. “In fact, they have made things worse. Media is talks about corruption all the time but it has had not been able to reduce corruption in the country.” He said that earlier, newspaper editorials told people what was best for them but this is no longer the case, especially in messages given by news channels. “If politicians do what voters want them to do, if editors write what people would like to read and channels dish out things people enjoy, we are surely heading for a rotten society, said Rao. Earlier, Dr Rajesh Kumar, Head of School of Communication at Doon University, welcomed DrRao and introduced him to the students. School of Communication faculty members Dr Tapas Ray, Nitin Kumar and Harish Kumar were also present on the occasion.
