Deighton Griffith ‘Dukers’ shine in poster competition

Congratulations to the hard working ‘dukers’ of the Deighton Griffith Secondary School. They were in winners’ row when Sheraton Mall held a poster competition to raise awareness of bullying and support calls to reduce its prevalence amongst our nation’s youth. One of many entries from the

Deighton Griffith Secondary school was deemed as the best in the older category. The first place prize was a Samsung Galaxy S4 mini handset which was donated by Electronics on Edge. Dukers help with public campaign

Along with the poster competition there was a public awareness campaign throughout the summer. On one

Saturday, shoppers at the mall were treated to a performance by ‘dukers’ when they put on a skit to highlight the different

types of bullying which are experienced daily. The highly informative skit was written and produced by group leader Ms. Susan Renee. The group caught the attention of shoppers of all

ages, as they also presented tips on dealing with bullying.

‘Dukers’ were on board with every aspect of the campaign, they also encouraged members of the public to make pledges

against bullying on Tuesdays and Fridays at the mall. They were often seen sticking new pledges to the wall and

motivating others to take selfies for the event’s Facebook page.

Congratulations to all who got involved with the campaign and

great work!!!

Gold Award holders to gather in Seoul

When the 14th International Gold Event (IGE) kicks off in South Korea in late October, the Award in Barbados will be represented by Dr. Allison Ramsay. The triennial event will be held under the theme, ‘Leadership for a transformed Award’. Allison will join with dozens of other gold award holders at the National Youth Centre of Korea where they will have the opportunity to engage in leadership training and visit different places where they will be able to see civic action at work. The Delegates will also be put on the spot as they will have to collaborate on presentations to the International Council on issues affecting the Award and global youth.

Allison started the Award when she went into sixth form at Queen’s College and has completed both the silver and gold awards. Her greatest award memories include hiking in Dominica as part of the yearly CASC Adventurous Journey. Of this she says, “At just seventeen at the time, conquering mountainous terrain, crossing rivers and navigating in a different country was an unforgettable and exciting experience and it was worth every step.”

Through the Barbados Gold Award holders Association (BGAA), she stays connected with the Award in recent years and has assisted with different events. Most recently, she served as compère at the national bronze and silver award ceremony held in June. She assisted with the CASC 2014 fundraising efforts and has been a part of the Christmas Cheer event organised by Sheraton mall. Allison has praised the Award’s role in helping to make her a well-rounded person. She is also an active volunteer with the SAVE Foundation and her alma mater, HillTop School.

Allison’s experience in journalism and research will surely be useful as worlds collide during the IGE. We wish her the best of luck and a lifetime of

memories as she sets off to share the exploits of the Award in Barbados.

CASC 2014 – The Vincy Experience An experience to remember!!! The Caribbean Award Sub-Regional Council (CASC) went back to its origins in 2014, when St. Vincent and the Grenadines hosted the annual adventurous journey camp. Barbados joined with Award participants from eight other countries: The Bahamas, Bermuda, Guyana, Cayman Islands, Dominica, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and host St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Queen’s College student, Erica Jordan did her silver qualifying expedition and

Ricardo Greenidge tackled the gold side of the venture, to complete the

Programme’s most coveted level. Barbados’ two participants had memorable

adventures, as they took on the mountain ranges of our closest island neighbour.

They were accompanied by Wayne Ifill as trainee leader and staff Charles Sealy

Kenrick Rogers and Carla Alleyne. Both silver and gold groups had the chance to

climb to the top of La Soufriere volcano. Other points of interest along the

expedition included Owia Salt pond and

Black Point Tunnel.

Coming from Barbados, St. Vincent offered the

chance to enjoy a black sand beach when the

local staff treated the group to meal of callaloo

cooked right on the beach. In addition to the

picnic, there was a treasure hunt which sent

the groups traversing the island in search of a

variety of items which included common goats

and a visit to Fort Charlotte. Gold participants

were also part of efforts to spruce up the very

popular spring and park area known locally as

‘The Spa’.

In addition to the camp, chairpersons and national directors

attended the CASC annual general meeting. Whilst giving reports on

the various developments in the different member countries; it is

always an opportunity to share best practices. Mike Heath, Head of

Information Management at the International Award office attended

the meeting. He made a presentation on the upcoming digital tools

that will be used for Award training across the world. Presently the

Award is working to advance to the full use of digital technology

wherever the Award is available.

Clean Up Barbados – Third year and counting

For the third year ‘Dukers’ were on board with the annual Clean Up Barbados organised by the Future Centre Trust. This event is a great way for participants from different groups to come together and have some fun while giving back. This year the group again tackled the beach area from the BTI car park at Cavans lane and up towards the Boatyard. Again the job of collecting ill discarded trash proved too much for the small group. But we’ll be back again next year to take the challenge!!!

Congratulations to the Future Centre Trust on another great campaign in the continued effort to raise awareness about our impact on the environment.

Bring ah fren Hike is back!!!!

Dukers are expected to be out in their full numbers on Sunday 26 October, when the annual Bring ah Fren and come hike takes place. For the first time this year there is a registration fee. Participants are encouraged to register as groups to take advantage of the group rate and the opportunity to win prizes.

The money raised will be used to assist those attending the planned annual CASC Adventurous Journey camp in Grenada in 2015. It is also a great opportunity for those new to the Programme to get a sampling of the hiking which is a major part of completing the Award.

Over the last few years, the routes used have included the Skeetes Bay area, Three houses Park and King George V Memorial park. It has typically given group leaders and participants the chance to take in the beauty of nature in a relaxing atmosphere.

As is clear from the name, all are welcome to participate. Parents, friends and those just curious about what the programme is all about are encouraged to take part in the hike. There will also be an information booth where interested persons can find out more about the many great activities associated with being a ‘duker’.
