Message to our Community

Greetings! We are pleased to present you with this annual report highlighting the mission and services of your Community Foundation. Our organization’s vision is to be a philanthropic leader as we partner to build strong communities throughout DeKalb County. Our donors, grantees, and community partners helped us move even closer to that vision in 2011.

Highlights include:Endowments & Donor Services – With 28 new charitable funds and nearly $3.3 million in contributions in 2011, our donors have ensured that we continue to have a strong philanthropic resource to enhance DeKalb County’s quality of life. You can read two visionary donor stories on pages 6-7. We are grateful to the many local donors who contributed $1,045,547 over a three year period to our Vision for a Thriving Community Campaign! The Grand Victoria Foundation matched these contributions to CommunityWorks and Administrative Endowment Funds dollar for dollar….thank you! You can see more details about the Vision Campaign on page 23.

Stewardship – Long-time serving board members Brad Brown, Joe Bussone, Evelina Cichy, Pete Dell, and Mariam Wassmann rotated off the board after making significant contributions to our mission. Joining our leadership starting in 2012 are Beth White, Kevin Fuss, Penny Rosenow, Charlie McCormick, and Alethia Hummel. 2011 also brought about a significant change to our staff. Deanna Cada and Alison Harris left the Foundation. We welcomed Becky Zantout, a recent graduate from the University of Iowa with degrees in Accounting and Marketing, as our Administrative Manager. Anita Zurbrugg joined the Foundation as Program Director, bringing with her a history of commitment to the DeKalb County Community. Prior to joining our staff, she worked for ten years with American Farmland Trust, a national public policy not-for-profit organization headquartered in Washington D.C., most recently serving as Midwest Director over 7 states. Anita’s father, Joe Faivre, was among the first Board Members of the Community Foundation from 1993-1998.

Grantmaking – We distributed nearly $1 million in grants and scholarships in 2011. We are committed to continuing to meet needs throughout DeKalb County thanks to endowed funds established by private donors.

A chart summarizing how our nine grant programs supported various areas of interest in the County can be found on page 4. Our Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) initiative continues to be a great experience for the high school youth involved as well as our board and the community at large. YEP awarded $12,186 in grants this spring to DeKalb County organizations that will partner with youth and build Developmental Assets. You can read more about their activities on pages 24-26.

Community Initiatives – We continue to implement the goals and strategies of our Vision for a Thriving Community - CommunityWorks Impact Plan, in the areas of child care, land use, and workforce development. Results of those investments are being evaluated as we formulate a strategy going forward. You can catch up on CommunityWorks results on page 22. Finally, we spent much of 2011 planning with others to form the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership – a membership-based network of partners within the nonprofit sector serving DeKalb County. The Partnership brings together these organizations as well as resource providers who fund, help coordinate, and are supportive of the efforts of our nonprofit community. You can learn more about the Partnership through its website, dekalbcountypartners.org.

We invite you to contribute to the vision of the Foundation….by seeking a grant to help you to serve DeKalb County….through a contribution to one of our existing funds that matches your charitable interests….or by setting up a fund yourself that helps express your vision through philanthropy. You can leave your legacy in DeKalb County and sustain our quality of life!

Our mission is to enhance the

quality of life in DeKalb County

by proactively addressing

community needs and expanding,

managing, and distributing

philanthropic resources.

In November 2011, the DCCF took title to the historic Sycamore Train Depot, to serve as its permanent home and benefi t all of DeKalb County. Thanks to the investments of Auto Meter, the City of Sycamore, and the Doug and Lynn Roberts Family, the exterior and infrastructure of the Depot has been restored and is solid.

We are currently renovating the interior...and we need your help! “Friends of the DeKalb County Community Foundation” has been formed to help achieve the $750,000 goal that will fi nish the Depot and allow the Community Foundation to move its operations without reducing grantmaking to the community. Learn more at dekalbccf.org.

Operating out of the Depot will signifi cantly increase the visibility, awareness, and donor confi dence in the permanency of the Community Foundation.

The Depot location will better position the DCCF to: •serveadditionaldonors •increasegrantmakingtononprofitandcommunityorganizationsthroughouttheCounty •conveneandofferleadershipresourcesaroundimportantcommunityissues

The south, two-story portion of the building will house the DCCF offi ces and meeting rooms. This will consist of a reception area, board and conference rooms, and four distinct offi ces to accommodate current and future staff growth.

The former freight room will be used as a Community Meeting Room. Organizations will benefi t from meeting in a historically signifi cant and functional building while supporting the mission of the Community Foundation.

Tony and Micki Chulick Support DCCF’s Community Leadership

The Chulicks have lived in DeKalb for 37 years; and contribute to the quality of life in DeKalb and the County as a whole through their personal and professional contributions. Tony, a successful dentist; and Micki, as Executive Director of 4-C (Community Coordinated Child Care) have served with a deep care and concern for people’s lives and futures.

Tony and Micki have long had a vision for a community that responds to the needs of its residents, with an emphasis on access to quality early care and education for our community’s young children.

They are long-time supporters of the Community Foundation, with Micki serving on the DCCF Board of Directors from 2001-2006.

In 2011, Tony and Micki’s vision led them to respond to the Vision for a Thriving Community Campaign by creating two endowment funds at the DCCF. The CommunityWorks Fund they created provides grant support to the strategic priorities in child care, land use, and workforce development in DeKalb County. As Co-Chair of the Child Care Vision Committee for many years, Micki knows how important philanthropic dollars are to support and grow a vibrant early care and education network throughout DeKalb County.

The Community Leadership Fund created by the Chulicks is an administrative endowment fund that supports the Community Leadership work of the DCCF. As the Foundation grows, its ability to go beyond ‘writing checks’ means that community issues and needs can be addressed through convening of key stakeholders and by building the capacity of organizations that serve others throughout the County. This fund and other Community Leadership Funds help the DCCF expand its success in accomplishing its mission.

Tony and Micki want to be known and remembered as good community stewards. They have demonstrated that DeKalb County is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

The DCCF can help you to give back and achieve your philanthropic vision as well. Contact us to get started!

Donor Story

Page 7: DeKalb County Community Foundation Annual Report 2011

Kevin Ballantine Continues to Make a Difference

Kevin William Ballantine, of DeKalb, lived a short life. After a three year struggle with leukemia, he passed away in January, 2012, at the age of 23. However, he always strove to inspire those around him. In a message on his personal blog, kballantine.wordpress.com/2010/07, he summarized his core philosophy of life:

From the beginning, and especially more recently while breaking the recent news [of my illness] to friends, I’ve heard the same question repeated over and over. At first I didn’t really know how to answer, but then I thought harder about what I can make out of this situation. Is there anything I can do for you? At first, I simply said thanks, but I can’t think of anything. But then I came up with a different, slightly longer answer.

Remember that life is fleeting, and there are more important things than grudges or ill wishes. Underneath our different skin colors, yarmulkes, head scarves, or crucifix necklaces, we’re still the same people. We still want the same thing – for people to be nice to us. All I ask of those who want to help me is this – treat your strangers as you would your best friends.

Kevin desired to make a difference. Now, thanks to the Kevin Ballantine Music Scholarship Fund, a fund recently set up by his family through the DeKalb County Community Foundation, each year, one graduating senior at DeKalb High School active in the DHS music program will receive a scholarship to help with college expenses. Kevin’s goal was to become a high school chemistry teacher, but his passion was marching band. He was a percussion section leader at DHS and Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. He went out of his way to encourage new band members and make them feel welcome. He felt strongly that students and people should educate themselves on current issues and take an active part in government.

The DeKalb County Community Foundation is the perfect way for Kevin’s energy and memory to live on, and to give back to the community that fostered his concern for others.

In the opening chapter of a planned autobiography that was never finished, Kevin wrote: “I hope that this book will allow me to live on in some way, continuing to make a difference in the world, however small that difference may be.” The book was left unfinished, but DCCF’s Kevin Ballantine Music Scholarship Fund will make Kevin’s dream of continuing to make a difference in the world come true.

Northern Illinois Food BankIn the fall of 2011, the DeKalb County Community Foundation awarded a $15,000 Community Needs Grant to the Northern Illinois Food Bank (NorthernILFoodBank.org) for the Take 50 Food for Health program. This program is designed to increase access to healthy food for DeKalb County partner food pantries which can be distributed to their clients to help them maintain a healthy diet. This program strives to educate partners and clients about the importance of good nutrition and ensures that the food purchased by the Northern Illinois Food Bank meets set nutrition criteria. Food products accessed by this program include low-sodium soups and beans, whole grain pasta, oatmeal, brown rice, and fresh produce. The challenge for food pantries is that, although these products are healthier choices, on average they are more costly than less healthy items. The “Take 50 Food for Health,” grant provides 50 cents credit for every $1 in shared maintenance fees. As a result, DeKalb County partner food pantries and their clients are able to access nutritionally dense food products. Northern Illinois Food Bank collaborates with fifteen partner food pantries in DeKalb County. To date, these fifteen food bank partners have acquired 11,697 pounds of healthy food and have used about $8,000 of the grant. The long-term impact of this program will improve the diets of people dependent on food assistance and lessen the risk of diet-related diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

Greater Kishwaukee Area Concert BandA $1,100 grant in 2011 allowed the Greater Kishwaukee Area Concert Band (kishconcertband.org) to purchase percussion instruments and a portable public address (PA) system for narration and announcements during concerts. The band serves two distinct, but inseparable populations; performers and the listening audience. The Kishwaukee Band provides a venue for experienced community musicians to play traditional concert band literature in an organized ensemble. Membership is open to anyone who has played in a concert band in high school, college or beyond and auditions are not required. Since the all-volunteer Kishwaukee band was started in 2002,it has continued to increase in size, representing 35-45 participants from across DeKalb County.

DCCF board members, Dean Lundeen and Alethia Hummel celebrated with IVVC students and staff at the May, 22 open house marking the completion of construction.

“We go to extensive measures to research, prepare and share informative narrative material about the composers, music and soloists and other interesting facts the audience might enjoy. With the addition of this PA, the band and audience have given much positive feedback as to their appreciation for the content and being able to hear it very easily. The quality of sound is WONDERFUL!” – Sue Huhta, Manager, Greater Kishwaukee Area Concert Band

an actual fire. Situations for which students get trained include: ladder deployment including victim removal, forcible entry, building constriction, and firefighter survival. The realistic training exercises prioritize safety of the trainees, so well constructed prop structures are necessary. The IVVC Fire Science program has grown in enrollment since it started in 1997, with over 300 students enrolled over the years. Many of the graduates have continued to serve as volunteers who protect our local communities.

Youth Engaged in Philanthropy

Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) enjoyed its third exciting year as a DCCF program. High school student participants in YEP learn leadership skills and the importance of philanthropy within and beyond their community. The youth met on a monthly basis and participated in a “Leadership Voyage” lead by DCCF Board Advisor, Tim Suter, and learned about the 40 Developmental Assets™, personality types, group consensus and grant making due diligence. YEP members participated in a variety of community activities including the Altrusa Spelling Bee, Ben Gordon Center Dodge Ball Tournament, community holiday gift wrapping, and programs and presentations with NIU. In the spring of 2012, ten organizations applied for YEP grants requesting a total of $18,736.00. The Youth were able to grant $12,186 to seven of these organizations thanks to the DeKalb County Youth Grantmakers Fund established in 2008 through the estate of Helen Bozivich and generous donations from several local private donors.

“The YEP grant helped to cultivate a philanthropic spirit which can have a positive influence on [the children’s] self esteem and provide the means for continuing to give back to the community”. –Brenda Donley, Director of New Hope Academy

New Hope AcademyYEP granted New Hope Academy $3,750 in 2011 and 2012 for vegetable plants and gardening tools to start and continue a youth-led vegetable garden project. With 2011’s harvest, 70 youth and their families served more than 200 families monthly and contributed produce to the community through New Hope Church Food Pantry, Hope Haven, and local nursing homes.

“The youth have studied the entire growing process …from beginning to end and have gained many valuable assets from their practical applications and experiences. Their leadership skills have improved tremendously because they initiated, planned and implemented the planting, maintenance, harvest and distribution schedules of the vegetables” observed Brenda Donley, Director and Founder of New Hope Academy.

“The program represents what YEP is about. We have helped them start and grow a garden that serves a lot of people. Just as they have grown, so has YEP”. YEP Grantmaking Chair Joey Thompson stated.

Rayitos del Sol, Mariachi Moderno Costumes are essential to any performance. Conexion Communidad’s Rayitos del Sol and Mariachi Moderno programs use mariachi music to teach youth cultural heritage and community pride. Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) has supported costumes for the programs since their inception. The groups have been growing in size and popularity and have had over fifty performances since 2010. The costumes are put to good use by generations of young students. Older students in Mariachi Moderno act as mentors and teach younger members music skills. The program brings together families and community members to support youth and learn about aspects of Latino culture. Aside from promoting cultural awareness, youth ranging in age from kindergarten to high school gain experience in leadership development and philanthropy (https://www.facebook.com/ConexionDeKalb?sk=wall).
