MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY

Greetings! We are pleased to present you with this annual report highlighting the mission and services of your Community Foundation. Our slogan is “For Good. For Ever.” An amazing number of partnerships converged in 2012 that truly exemplify that slogan.

Highlights include:Endowments & Donor Services – With 19 new charitable funds and over $7 million in contributions, 2012 was a record year for the Foundation in terms of asset development! Contributions from nearly 200 donors toward the renovation of our new permanent home in the historic Sycamore Train Depot demonstrated a broad base of support for our mission. We are grateful to the Friends of the Community Foundation committee, chaired by Mike Cullen and Suzanne Juday, for leading the fund development. We also had two unique new Funds begin toward the end of 2012. The Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation, a private foundation in existence since the 1940’s to support music education and performance, converted its operations to a Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation. The Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation Fund will exist in perpetuity and continue to make its namesake proud. Finally, Tom Warren, a retired farmer in Somonauk, created the Thomas Warren and Friends Fund, a Donor Advised Fund that allows him and his friends to support causes important to them. His donation of farmland is a unique model for other landowners to consider for creating a charitable fund that fuels their philanthropy.

Stewardship – Long-time board members Tom Matya and Mary Pritchard rotated off the board after making significant contributions to our mission. Joining our leadership starting in 2013 is Amie Carey. 2012 also brought about growth in our staff composition. We created a fourth full-time position, Grants and Community Initiatives Manager, to help administer the many grant programs and community initiatives we participate in. Becky Zantout, already on staff, was selected to fill this inaugural position.

Grantmaking – We made distributions from our various charitable funds totaling nearly $1 million. The year 2012 should be the last lagging effect of the 2008 recession on our fund payouts. We are proud of the fact that we had a record level distribution during the heart of the recession in 2008 and 2009. We are committed to

continuing to meet needs throughout DeKalb County thanks to endowed funds established by private donors. Our Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) initiative continues to be a great experience for the high school youth involved as well as our board and the community. YEP youth led the way to innovation at the Community Foundation by writing and receiving a grant from Horizons Unlimited Foundation to introduce an on-line grant application and management system – starting with YEP grants early in 2014!

Community Initiatives – The highlight of progress in 2012 in our CommunityWorks initiative was in the Land Use arena. Our Land Use Committee worked with the DeKalb County Storm Water Management Committee and DeKalb County Government in securing a grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) to conduct watershed planning in DeKalb County. This planning process, which has yielded a broad base of support from many stakeholders, will provide important data to inform effective land use development decisions in the years ahead. Finally, we worked with a terrific Steering Committee to officially launch the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership – a membership-based network of partners within the nonprofit sector serving DeKalb County.

Our donors, grantees, and community partners continue to demonstrate how philanthropy thrives in DeKalb County! We invite you to contribute to the vision of the Foundation….by seeking a grant to help you to serve DeKalb County….through a contribution to one of our existing funds that matches your charitable interests….or by setting up a fund yourself that helps express your vision through philanthropy!

Our mission is to

enhance the quality of

life in DeKalb County by

proactively addressing

community needs and

expanding, managing,

and distributing

philanthropic resources.

4. Choose a Type of FundWe offer a variety of funds that are flexible to meet our donors’ different charitable interests:

Undesignated Funds Undesignated funds offer the broadest giving option, allowing grants to be made to wherever our board and professional staff determines our community’s needs are the greatest. Field-of-Interest Funds These funds create grants that meet needs in a particular field or geographic area that is of interest to you. Donor-Advised Funds Donor-advised funds enable you to recommend specific eligible organizations to receive grants. Scholarship Funds Scholarship funds enable students to pursue academic goals. You may define guidelines for candidacy, the advisory committee, the school and the field of study. Designated Funds These funds let you support specific organizations while we make sure that grants to these groups remain relevant over time and responsive to changing circumstances. Organizational (Agency) Endowment Funds Organizational endowment funds are established by nonprofit organizations to provide income to them. We handle all administrative and investment responsibilities, freeing the organization to pursue its charitable mission.

HOW DO I CREATE A FUND AT THE DCCF?

1. Decide When to GiveYou can create your fund now, establish it in your will, or generate a trust arrangement that benefits your family as well as charity. 2. Decide What to GiveAlmost any kind of asset can be used to start your fund, such as cash, publicly traded securities, closely held stock, real estate, life insurance, and tangible personal property.

3. Choose the Name for Your FundMost of our funds are named for the donor or the donor’s family, or as a memorial to someone special.

In November 2011, the DCCF took title to the historic Sycamore Train Depot, to serve as its permanent home. The skill and dedication of Sharp Architects, Inc.; Swedberg and Associates, Inc; and Russ Smith Construction, LLC resulted in a solid and elegant finished building. The DCCF officially began operating out of the Depot in October of 2012.

This new home represents a significant milestone in the history of the DeKalb County Community Foundation as it approaches its 20 year anniversary. Operating out of the Depot significantly increases the visibility, awareness, and donor confidence in the permanency of the Community Foundation.

As a catalyst to further grow the practice and effectiveness of philanthropy in DeKalb County, the Depot location better positions the DCCF to:l serve additional donorsl increase grantmaking to nonprofit and community organizations throughout the Countyl convene and offer leadership resources around important community issues

In late November, 2012, the DCCF hosted a special Open House and Dedication for current and former Board Members and staff of the Community Foundation, donors who have established Funds at the Community Foundation, and friends who support the mission of the Foundation, especially through the renovation

of the Depot. Following a Prayer of Dedication for the work of the Foundation and the Depot, the special night’s program reflected on the past, celebrated the present, and looked to the future of the DCCF. Clint Cargile, a local author, wrote a book about the history of the Depot and the railroad’s significance to Sycamore and the region. His research has been a great addition to the story of the Depot as we write a new chapter together.

Operating out of a historically significant building that reflects the Spirit of Philanthropy in DeKalb County, our Board and Staff re-commit ourselves to our mission and vision.

The Community Foundation thanks the many contributors who made it possible to put the Depot back into use to benefit all of DeKalb County. Special thanks go to Auto Meter Products, Inc., the City of Sycamore, and Doug and Lynn Roberts for having the vision and commitment to give new life to the Depot. We are proud that, with the help of so many contributors, we were able to renovate and move the DCCF into the Depot without reducing the Foundation’s important grantmaking to organizations throughout DeKalb County.

The DCCF Board formalized its commitment to community leadership and proactive grantmaking by allocating $12,000 in 2012 to launch and coordinate the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership (DCNP). DCNP was created out of a dedicated consortium of established local nonprofit organizations and resource providers who support them. DCNP is a membership-based network of partners serving DeKalb County who fund, help coordinate and are supportive of the efforts of DeKalb County’s nonprofit community. DCNP is designed to communicate, coordinate, and create programs and initiatives that raise the level of nonprofit program and organizational effectiveness and efficiency in fulfilling their individual and collective mission of making DeKalb County a great place to live, work and raise families. Member benefits include free workshops, access to discounts from participating local venders, and access to leveraging support and services.

Since its launch in March, 2012, DCNP • Created a 13-member steering committee composed of nonprofit agencies, providers and donors meeting at least monthly • Secured a $20,000 grant from the Douglas C. & Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation to launch and promote DCNP• Established the DCNP Philanthropy Center at DeKalb Public Library• Created DCNP website: dekalbcountypartners.org• Co-sponsored monthly nonprofit events, including Nonprofit Day attended by 300+ administrators and staff, board members and supporters of the nonprofit community• Welcomed 34 inaugural DCNP members providing DCNP with $8,540 in supporting memberships• Distributed over 130 timely electronic DCNP announcements throughout the nonprofit community

COMMUNITYWORKS

Early Care and EducationGoal To increase the quality, availability and affordability of child care in DeKalb County while increasing the support of the business community.

Results DCCF partnered with 4-C: Community Coordinated Child Care to support a full time Quality Rating System (CRS) Specialist position. Grants for over the last four years have enabled early care and education programs to enhance the care they provide while at the same time receiving additional state funding that can be used to further enhance their programs. Since 2010, over $1 million has been received by programs in DeKalb County from leveraging DCCF’s funding. All eligible nonprofit centers in DeKalb County have achieved star ratings and the county is home to two of the six 4 Star rated child care centers in Illinois. DCCF’s 2012 $9,550 grant assisted 4-C to meet the increased need of consultation and training of DeKalb County’s nonprofit child care centers in preparation for Illinois’ redesigned Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS). Going forward, 4-C will be able to sustain the Specialist position without need for DCCF support.

CommunityWorks invests in DeKalb County by cultivating young learners, developing wise use of its natural resources and growing a proficient and skilled workforce. Twenty separate CommunityWorks endowment funds together generated $65,183 that was distributed in 2012 over the initiative areas of Child Care, Land Use and Workforce Development. DCCF Board Members Lana Haines and Kristina Garcia co-chair the CommunityWorks Steering Committee.

CommunityWorks funding supports a Quality Rating System (QRS) Specialist who works with classroom teachers to create a quality learning environment for young children.

15

Workforce DevelopmentGoal To enhance “soft skills” education for all DeKalb County middle-school youth, while working to improve employer participation in youth workforce preparation.

Results DCCF has been working with middle school educators to promote sixteen specific “soft skills” identified as lacking in the emerging workforce. As a result, DCCF developed and copyrighted the Skills for a Successful Future Wheel and distributed it to area schools and programs impacting middle school youth. DCCF issued $3,900 in grants during 2012 to middle school programs in DeKalb County. Initial evaluation of the Learning for Life program promoting soft skills at Kishwaukee Education Consortium reported gains in a number of individual soft skills, which include academic, social, ethical and character development.

Rural landowners study watershed maps to identify stormwater and water quality issues at a workshop hosted at the Depot.

Land Use Goal To provide tools for key DeKalb County decision-makers so that future land use decisions are informed, wise and serve the common good.

Results The DeKalb County Stormwater Management Planning Committee has been working together with DCCF to identify opportunities to address flooding and stormwater management issues throughout DeKalb County. In 2012 DCCF partnered with DeKalb County in securing $58,615 from IEPA to conduct watershed planning in DeKalb County. CommunityWorks funds provided a $30,000 cash match along with local in-kind resources to fund this $115,000 stakeholder-driven project. The 18-month project, coordinated by a 10-member Watershed Steering Committee representing the watershed area is designed to address flooding and stormwater management issues in three sub-watersheds in western Kane County and east-central DeKalb County, encompassing the communities of Cortland, Maple Park and portions of Sycamore. DCCF’s primary role is to coordinate outreach opportunities within the community.

“Now, more than ever before in light of the many advances in technology, as employers and educators, we cannot lose sight of the importance of soft skills. These skills set us apart and solidify our relationships with the consumer.” – Elizabeth Hoppenworth, Director of Resident Services, DeKalb Area Retirement Center and CommunityWorks Workforce Development Committee Member

Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) completed its fourth year as a DCCF initiative. High School youth from across DeKalb County participate in monthly meetings, leadership activities, and volunteer outreach to understand the need for philanthropy in DeKalb County. The youth are familiarized with the nonprofit sector and introduced to grant making. Through youth led meetings, the YEP committee learns to analyze grant applications and identify the potential impact on other youth in DeKalb County. YEP grants support projects and programs that implement the 40 Developmental Assets™ to grow more successful engaged youth in DeKalb County.

YOUTH ENGAGED IN PHILANTHROPY Hope Haven GrantYEP granted $2,467 to Hope Haven to allow homeless youth an opportunity to travel on summer outings to enhance their education, social and leadership skills, and family interactions. The grant was a perfect fit for YEP funding because it had a high level of impact on youth and promoted many of the 40 Developmental Assets™. Many of the youth affected by this grant would never have the opportunity to go on trips to places like the Brookfield Zoo or Discovery Center. It helps them think beyond their current circumstance and open their mind to new learning opportunities.

GRANTS IN ACTIONIndian Creek School District Indian Creek School district is taking a stand against bullying and promoting healthy lifestyles for school students and adults across DeKalb County. The Community Foundation provided funding to help produce a four DVD set with supplemental materials to address bullying prevention, suicide prevention, respect for self and others, and toxic environments in the workplace. Dr. Pamela Rockwood, Superintendent of Indian Creek School District, explains her motivation for the project, “while there are materials that are in the market for each topic, there is not a professional development DVD and professional development guide that exists that is organized by age level for each of the topics.” The grant exemplifies the DCCF Board’s commitment to support projects that provide a county-wide benefit and that leverage the Foundation funding with support from multiple partners.

Live Healthy DeKalb CountyIn partnering with community leaders through the Live Healthy DeKalb County (LHDC) Initiative, DCCF is helping to create policy and environmental changes that promote healthy lifestyles and to make the healthy choice the easy choice in all of the places where people live, work and play. Through the end of 2012, DCCF granted $31,267 to projects supporting the Initiative’s two focus areas: (1) creating a walkable/bikeable community with safe family-friendly environments and (2) increasing the number of and access to community venues that offer healthy food and beverage choices. As part of the LHDC Community Leadership Team, DCCF helped to launch the DeKalb County Food Security Council composed of local food pantries, food providers and members of the community interested in increasing access to healthy food.

Cindy Capek, DeKalb, explains one of the new trail kiosks for area bike trails made possible as part of a $15,000 DCCF grant to benefit the Live Healthy DeKalb County initiative. Additional funds from the grant will be used to provide bike racks and to promote trail usage.

AdventureWorks of DeKalb CountyA grant of $2,500 to AdventureWorks of DeKalb County supports its adventure therapy programs for at-risk youth in DeKalb County through the purchase of five canoes to be used by a group of youth ages 13 to 18. Before AdventureWorks was able to purchase canoes, paddling groups had to rent equipment and were limited by transportation and flexibility. Now, AdventureWorks is implementing a weekly paddling group. Patrick McMillion, Clinical Adventure Group Coordinator explained that canoeing and other outdoor adventures provide metaphors for real life situations. According to Lynette Spencer, AdventureWorks’ Director, the paddling group will teach trust in oneself and in others and good communication skills to the youth involved.

Ellwood House MuseumThe Ellwood House Museum is embarking on a capital campaign to better orient visitors to all properties of the Ellwood House Museum. The DCCF has committed to a multi-year community needs grant of $27,000 over three years to support the installation of a site orientation exhibit in the Visitor Center.

“I want our guests to view this new exhibit and understand the importance of the history that we preserve,” says Brian Reis, Ellwood House Association Director, “this includes an understanding of the historic structures on the estate, the family that built them, and the businesses that made it possible.” The community foundation recognized this project as a good use of grant funds because of its long term impact on the community. The exhibit will be developed and installed over the next two years with an opening reception planned for May of 2015.

The Thomas Warren and Friends Fund, started by its namesake, was established in order to facilitate grants recommended by Tom and his committee of advisors. Warren is a retired farmer who lives in Somonauk, and a strong believer in community. His family roots go far back in Northern Illinois. “It has been a long term interest of mine to give back to the community as so many have done over the years”, stated Tom. “We would like to invite others to contribute to this Fund as a friend as we spend some time on the road less traveled”.

The Community Foundation is honored to be partnering with Tom and his friends to support the charitable organizations and causes important to them.

Recently, the Thomas Warren and Friends Fund at the DeKalb County Community Foundation presented a $10,000 check to Dave Baker, Executive Director of Open Door Rehabilitation Center. Baker comments, “This grant will be used to help fund the completion of a group home remodeling project that expands the capacity of a 4-person to a 7-person group home to meet the increasing demands in the upcoming admission of new residential consumers in addition to our existing consumers.”

This year Open Door celebrates its 50th anniversary serving 125 adults who have such developmental disabilities as mental retardation, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, autism, and other

disabilities. In addition to the 54 residential consumers (soon to be 58), Open Door also provides vocational services for an additional 12 consumers who live in apartments, and 59 who live in the community with family or foster parents.

Baker remarks, “Open Door was launched with the financial and community support of volunteers, organizations, and businesses. The Thomas Warren and Friends Fund is another example of community support which continues to enable our programs to thrive and to continue to meet the needs of persons with disabilities in our local communities.”Philanthropy is the giving of one’s time, talent, and/or treasure to help their fellow citizens and community. Donor advised funds are a wonderful way to enjoy tax benefits and the joy and fulfillment of giving to improve the lives of others. When we work together to meet the needs of DeKalb County residents, we exemplify what it means to be a community and can enhance the quality of life for us all.

The slogan for The Wurlitzer Company at one time was….’the name that means Music to millions’. The Company began in the United States in 1856 and was primarily known for its production of premier pianos and organs – both pipe and electric. At one time Wurlitzer was the largest musical instrument company in the U.S. Perhaps you have a Wurlitzer piano in your home?

The company owned retail music stores in most major cities from the 1930’s through the 1980’s, with primary manufacturing locations in DeKalb, IL; North Tonawanda, NY; Cincinnati, OH; and West Germany. Although the company went out of business in the mid-1980’s, the Wurlitzer name has endured – currently owned by the Gibson Guitar Company.

The Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation was established in the 1940’s by Farny and his wife Grace. Farny, who died in the early 1970’s, was the last family member involved with the company. The Foundation began with a mission and focus of providing financial assistance to further music education and performance. The majority of its grantees were in the mid-west, but some support went to other parts of the U.S.

The Board of Directors of the Wurlitzer Foundation consists of five long-standing members. In 2011 they began exploring ways to maintain the Foundation’s existence in perpetuity. This led to dialogue with the DeKalb County Community Foundation and the perfect solution. As of the end of 2012, the Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation converted its operations to become a Donor Advised Fund within the Community Foundation. Private foundations often find many administrative benefits operating under the structure of a Community Foundation, while continuing to enjoy its grantmaking role in the community.

The Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation Fund’s creation constituted a 15% increase in the Community Foundation’s total assets and will add about

25% to its annual grant and fund distribution total. Since Charlie and Mary Roberts began the DeKalb County Community Foundation in 1993, this is the single largest gift in the Foundation’s history. Another unique element of this partnership is that the Wurlitzer Foundation’s Board of Directors requested that their assets remain invested with the National Bank & Trust Company in Sycamore. The Community Foundation Board honored that request, allowing for a locally invested pool of assets for the Community Foundation that can grow with on-going contributions.

The Community Foundation is honored to keep the Wurlitzer name alive in DeKalb County by working with the Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation Fund Board of Advisors to continue to ‘mean music to millions’ through its grant support of projects that are consistent with its original mission.
