Mother Teresa grew famous for humbly ministering to lepers, the homeless and the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta (otherwise known as Kolkata), India. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Welcome back to Term 2! As usual, ANZAC Day brought with it some windy weather that turned a warm day into Winter, very quickly. I would like to extend a special thanks to all students, staff and parents who came out in school holidays to attend the Lithgow area commemorations for ANZAC Day. The marches were very well supported by our school community and students represented our school very well in a number of area locations. At the start of this week Mr Gibson, Ms Williams and I travelled to our Catholic feeder primary schools in Portland, Oberon and Lithgow. We spoke to Year 6 students about our transition program for Year 7 in 2020. The students and staff made us feel very welcome and the students asked very good questions. If you know a Year 6 student who does not attend a Catholic school but is interested in attending La Salle from next year, please encourage them to contact the school office to obtain information about our Year 6 transition program. Congratulations to Year 12 students for their application and willingness to succeed in our examination sessions. We hope that the experience was useful, gives you some great feedback about your progress and assists your preparation for the HSC. We would also like to thank teachers, parents and students in Years 10 and 11 for their support of our NESA information sessions last Monday evening and Years 7 and 12 for their attendance and support of our Parent/Teacher interviews last night. It is lovely to meet with families on these important occasions and we appreciate your attendance. A special thanks goes to Ms Hughes for her organisation of both evenings. The annual Qualtrics surveys were sent by email to all students, staff and parents during the first week of term. If you have not already completed a survey, please assist us by doing so as soon as possible. If you did not receive the link, please contact the office and they will forward this to you. The feedback we gain from the survey is very useful and assists us in identifying the needs of the school and in our planning for the future at La Salle. Best wishes to Year 7 and 9 students, who will complete their NAPLAN next week. The NAPLAN will be facilitated through an online format this year. Students have had several opportunities to prepare for the new NAPLAN and we hope that students will be more comfortable with this method of testing. God bless! Mrs Joyce Smith Principal

REC CO-ORDINATOR REPORT Jesus called out, ‘Have you caught anything, friends?’ And when they answered, ‘No’, he said, ‘Throw the net out to starboard and you’ll find something.’ So they dropped the net, and there were so many fish that they could not haul the net in (John:21 – from last Sunday’s Gospel) “Consult not your fears but your hopes and dreams” Pope John XXIII The Caritas Project Compassion appeal raised an impressive $788 for poor communities around the world. A great effort by our students and thank you to all who donated. Year 9 and 10 have had their Lasallian retreat days last week. The theme for the Year 9 retreat was ‘Me, Myself and I’. They learnt that ‘life is the most difficult exam’ and not to let any peer pressure to conform define for them what success is. The theme of the Year 10 retreat was ‘SOS: Service Opportunity Sacrifice’. The retreat’s activities helped build our student’s empathy for the poor. They were encouraged to look to the sacrificial example of Jesus and take advantage of opportunities to get involved and make a difference

A WORD FROM OUR STAGE CO-ORDINATORS Ms Williams– Stage 4 Co-ordinator

Camp Yarramundi Welcome back Year 7 and 8 to an exceptionally busy term. Since my last delegram article, our Year 7’s has participated in their three-day school camp at Camp Yarramundi late last term. What a fun filled three days we had. Whilst some activities were a challenge i.e. the giant swing, students forged new friendships and exhibited courage, strength and determination. I was particularly impressed at the group work ethic that they displayed. The camp leaders were very complimentary regarding the behavior and commitment of our students stating that the students from LaSalle were excellent! Well Done also to the Year 10 Peer Support leaders who did a wonderful job helping the Year 7’s. Thank you to Mrs Leighton, Mr Picman, Mr Jessett, Mrs Donnelly and Mrs Legge for all of your help and support on camp. Year 6 Visits It’s that time of year when we begin looking into enrolments for Year 7 2020! On Monday this week I went on tour with Mrs Smith and Mr Gibson to talk to students at St Joseph’s Portland, St Joseph’s Oberon and St Patricks, Lithgow. Each group of students had insightful questions to ask about both secondary schooling and what it might be like to be a student at La Salle Academy. It was great to meet you all, and looking forward to the upcoming High School Transition days where you will continue your pre High School journey and partake in sample high school lessons and tours of the campus! Have a good fortnight, [email protected]

Mrs Holgate – Stage 5 Co-ordinator

Welcome to term 2 and to the change of weather which also means the change of the uniform. Students are

reminded that boys are to be wearing their tie each day and that the wearing of shorts is not an option with the

uniform. Girls can also take advantage of wearing the school trousers when the weather is not so friendly. Please

refer to the uniform policy that is posted on the school website for information regarding beanies and scarves.

Term 2 is a very busy term as many students are completing tasks that form their report results. Students must

make sure that they are planning and preparing themselves well in advance of the due dates for the submission of

the task. Please don't leave things to the last minute as this often leads to the disappointment of the result achieved

when the task is handed back.

Subject Selection Year 10 will soon be looking at subject selection for year 11 before they go on Work Experience at the end of the

term. Now is the best time to be talking to teachers about the subjects that they are interested in to get as much

information as possible so that you and your parents can make an informed decision about your future. I am more

than happy to answer any questions you have about the transition to Stage 6, just ask.

Please remember that I am here to assist students in Stage 5 with any issues that they may be experiencing. You

can contact me via email [email protected] or contact the school office on 6354 5100.

Mrs Hicks - Stage 6 Co-ordinator

Only two weeks of term has passed, yet students in Years 11 and 12 have been very busy.

Year 12 returned this term to “practice examinations” to give them the opportunity to complete

examinations under HSC exam conditions in the Bishop Dougherty Hall. I was very impressed

by how seriously the students completed the exams, which although not assessment tasks, will

help them in their preparation and revision as the HSC approaches. On Friday of last week, Mr

Gibson and I accompanied Year 12 to CSU Bathurst for a FACTS Day which provided them

with information, not just on universities but also apprenticeships, studying at TAFE and other

career options. They also attended a presentation on UAC. While a lot of information is found in

the UAC Guide and on their website, it was very valuable to hear from a recent graduate,

particularly about the bonus points on the ATAR scores.

Thank you to all the parents who attended Parent Teacher Interviews last night. These provide

a wonderful opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher and discuss the progress being made

at school by their child. I hope that those of you who were able to hear Ms Hughes presentation

of UAC in the library, are now more familiar with the procedures to be followed in the next few

months with regards to university applications.

Year 11 students were visited by Alison and Martin from Services NSW who spoke

predominantly to them about getting their driver’s licence, but also about other services

available to young people. Please ask your child about “Free to Go”, a service provided by

NRMA Roadside Service. Also, Alison advised the students about the “Active Kids” and

“Creative Kids” vouchers of $100 which can help defray the costs for young people engaging in

sporting and artistic and creative pursuits. Again, ask your child about these.

As winter is approaching, I ask for parental support in ensuring that your child is following the La

Salle Academy uniform code for the winter terms. The school blazer is compulsory and the

black jacket is to be worn in addition to the blazer, not instead of. Grey trousers, purchased

through the La Salle uniform shop, and no others, may be worn during terms 2 and 3 by the

female students.

If you have any concerns regarding your child in Year 11 or 12, please contact me on 63545100

or at [email protected]

YEAR 6 STEM DAY On Friday, 5th April 2019, the Year 6 students from St. Patrick’s Primary School Lithgow and St. Joseph’s Primary School Portland attended La Salle Academy for a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) event. The students were engaged in performing an open-ended investigation to determine the effect of frictional force on the speed of an object. The Year 6 teachers from St Patrick’s and St Joseph’s accompanied their students to and from this event and assisted in the supervision of their students throughout the day. The Year 6 students were asked to formulate an aim, a hypothesis and a safety assessment for the investigation, as well as consider the variables operating throughout the investigation. They carried out the investigation, drew a diagram of the set up for the investigation, tabulated their data, graphed their data, analysed their data and formulated a conclusion. Mr. MacKinnon’s Year 10 Science class assisted in the running of the Year 6 STEM day in the Bishop Patrick Dougherty Hall (La Salle Academy School Hall). These students will be presented with a Merit Certificate for their efforts on the day. To train the Year 10s so they were ready for the day, they practiced this investigation themselves so they became familiar with it. This event proved to be a positive learning experience for all parties partaking, particularly for the Year 6 and Year 10 students, as it engaged all students, as well as encouraged patience, resilience and tolerance and assisted in the strengthening of STEM knowledge and skills outlined in the Science K-10 syllabus. STEM days at La Salle are planned for Years 5 and 4 for later in the year. If you have any questions, comments or concerns about these STEM events, please e-mail me at [email protected], and I will respond in kind. Thank you for your time. Mr. Jason MacKinnon Organiser
