Delaware nature SocietyDelaware Nature Society, a nonprofit membership
organization, fosters understanding, appreciation and
enjoyment of the natural world through education, preserves
ecologically significant areas, and advocates stewardship
and conservation of natural resources.
Delaware Nature Society, headquartered at Ashland Nature
Center, owns or manages more than 2000 acres of land for
wildlife habitat and education preserves. A farm education
program is taught at our 352-acre Coverdale Farm Preserve.
Abbott’s Mill’s historic, water-powered gristmill is preserved
and operational. Flint Woods Preserves in New Castle
County and Marvel Salt marsh and Cedar Bog Preserves in
Sussex County provide extensive field study opportunities.
We operate the DuPont Environmental Education Center
at the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge on the
Wilmington Riverfront and offers programming at Cooch-
Dayett Mills in Newark. Unlike many nature centers with
environmental education only, Delaware Nature Society has
Natural Resource Conservation and Advocacy components.
In addition, it is the Delaware affiliate of the National Wildlife
Federation (NWF), offering input on national issues that
concern citizens in our region. Our nature centers and
preserves serve as regional hubs for environmental activities
in every season.
Individuals, school students, teachers and community
groups increase their awareness of the natural world
through our programs.

Dear Members and Friends,
In 2013 we set a strategic focus to highlight specific strengths and community niche at each of our sites. In this report you’ll see how Delaware Nature Society has made a state-wide impact utilizing our nature education sites and preserves. From creating Schoolyard Habitats in Seaford, to inspiring teens in Wilmington through educational programs, to discovering a nesting habitat for Meadowlarks at Coverdale Farm Preserve, to assisting the statewide Sea-Level Rise Awareness campaign, we’ve made a real impact on improving our environment and engaging citizens.
Our fiscal report remains strong, thanks to our loyal and generous donors and members. Our dedicated board, volunteers and staff make a difference every day, improving our environment for wildlife, plants and people.
Thank you for the many ways you help us increase our impact in the community. We look forward to building on these results and our achievements in 2014.
Brian Winslow Executive Director

2013 highlightsSeaford Elementary Schoolyard Habitats As a result of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Chesapeake Bay Trust grant (Capacity Building Initiative) and collaboration and partnership with National Wildlife Federation, Seaford School District & Sussex Conservation District, four rain gardens were installed at Seaford elementary schools (one in each elementary school) to be used as Schoolyard Habitats. These rain gardens provided an outdoor teaching space for over 400 students a year, provided habitat for wildlife, beautifies the schoolyard, captured runoff, prevented erosion, and improved local water quality. In addition, the NOAA B Wet grant also included programming for all 2nd & 7th graders in the district.
Delaware Nature Society awarded highly competitive grant for statewide watershed programsThe 3M/AEARO Technologies grant funded comparative watershed programs statewide with Red Clay District travelling to DEEC and Ashland Nature Center; Capital District programming at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center and Milford Park; Milford District programming at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center and Blair’s Pond/Mispillion tributary. In addition to the generous funding provided for the program, 3M/AEARO employees served as mentors to the seventh graders during their field work.
Sea-Level Rise Awareness Week Along with 14 of our conservation partners, Delaware celebrated it’s first Sea-Level Rise (SLR) Awareness Week September 14th-22nd. Established through a legislative resolution, SLR week reached over 300 people through seminars, volunteer tree plantings, and educational events. We also released a 13 minute video titled “Rising Tides” that detailed how Delaware will be impacted by SLR and what local governments are doing now to prepare. Governor Markell kicked off the week with Executive Order 41 which requires all state agencies to consider SLR predictions in all future planning.
Hawk Watch continues to break recordsThe 7th annual Ashland Hawk Watch, which runs September – November, counted a record breaking 20,910 raptors and attracted 1,540 visitors. This daily hawk migration watch station is a partnership between Delaware Nature Society, Delmarva Ornithological Society, and Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
Year of Coverdale Farm Preserve2013 was dedicated as the “Year of Coverdale Farm Preserve” to highlight the farm education programming, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and 352 acres of nature preserve at the site. During the year, visitors and program participants experienced farm to table programs using our kitchen, explored the natural areas during birding programs, and visited our barnyard animals. Site enhancements included installing a deer exclusion fence, planting 150 native trees (with the help of over 50 community volunteers), and expanding our livestock program, with the addition of a new dairy cow and male calves. The Coverdale Farm Preserve CSA provided 22 weeks of fresh, organically grown produce to 200 families in our region.
DuPont Environmental Education Center program inspires Wilmington teen to pursue advanced education in scienceSyesha Walley first experienced DuPont Environmental Education Center as a teen participant in our immersive week-long Delaware Futures program funded through the DuPont Clear into the Future conservation program. This unique program provides Wilmington teens access to our hands-on citizen science program exploring the marsh ecosystem at DuPont Environmental Education Center. Syesha started the program with apprehension about nature (and in particular, spiders), but left with a new appreciation for wildlife, conservation, and marsh animals. This interest led her to receive a scholarship and become the first paid summer education intern, generously funded by a private fund at Delaware Community Foundation, established by the late Gov. Russell W. Peterson, and his wife June. Syesha served as a DuPont Environmental Education Center intern for two consecutive summers. This experience has fostered a deeper appreciation for the environment and the natural world. Today, Syesha is pursuing an education degree so she can teach science to children.
Abbott’s Mill Nature Center expands program offerings for the communityIn 2013, Abbot’s Mill Nature Center had 14,467 participants in our programs, of which, 8,821 were students. This is a dramatic increase over 2012. Our team at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center is committed to connecting more students, school groups and adults with meaningful education opportunities at the site.

The Dream Team Founded in 2009 and naming themselves, the ‘Dream Team,’ this group of dedicated and enthusiastic individuals began their weekly volunteer efforts with the construction of the two Native American longhouses that are used for lessons about the Lenni Lenape. Led by Volunteer Guide Gordon Fisher, Jim Bayard, Tim Lantz, Eric Roberson, Hank Seiler, and Kathy Szczerba meet weekly to work on new projects at our sites. In 2013, the Dream Team helped construct the Ashland Boardwalk, stream-trail bridge and railings, additional picnic tables and benches, raised beds in the Coverdale Education Garden, hanging tomato trellises for the CSA, a canoe rack for the DuPont Environmental Education Center, and the Coverdale Farm Preserve pond boardwalk and platform, totalling 800 hours of service.

Eastern Meadowlark nesting On a warm summer day, our Land Steward, Dave Pro, was mowing weeds in a meadow near Coverdale Farm Preserve when a Meadowlark flew out of the brush! Looking closer, he found a Meadowlark nest that was hidden in the grass. This meadow had once been filled with cool season grasses that were too dense for Meadowlarks to take up home in. Once we took out all of the cool season grasses and planted native grasses in their place, a habitat was created that was perfect for Meadowlarks – and other native birds – to raise their young.

In memory of Doris M. Billingsley In June 2013, a new picnic pavilion at Ashland Nature Center was dedicated to Doris M. Billingsley, a long time volunteer guide. The project was funded by her husband, Jack, in her memory to honor her love of nature and passion for teaching children about nature. The dedication sign invites visitors to “Explore, Learn and Discover the Sense of Wonder in Nature”. The new pavilion provides shelter from the sun, wind and rain for visitors and program participants to the center.

In 2013, Delaware Nature Society saw a continued increase in the number of people reached as we continue to live our mission. We saw a dramatic increase in unrealized gains from last year as our endowment investments continue to grow with the market.
83% of our expenses go directly to mission driven programs. Administrative and fundraising expenses account for 17%.
Full financial statements may be viewed at our offices at Ashland Nature Center in Hockessin DE.
