Worship & FormationVestry News My father had a sign in his garden that read “He who plants a garden believes in tomorrow.” He has sadly passed away, but I know that his years of lovingly planting and tend-ing his garden have left lasting beauty that the new owners of his property are able to enjoy. The sign now adorns our garden, and it provides one of a myriad of pleasures for me as I garden, one of my favorite activities. There is something so very ful-filling about the act of planting, nurturing and admiring the finished product. I feel a strong part of the life cycle of nature, and of its Creator. The very act of being involved in and enjoy-ing such beauty is very meditative for me. It reminds me that I am a vital part of this beautiful world, and indeed am mak-ing my own contribution. I am playing a role in preserving the beauty of the earth, which we have “borrowed from our chil-dren,” and am tending it for the next generation and beyond. I wrote a few months ago of the pleasures to be found in the city, but, as I said then, I find even more joy in the sensory stimulation in our backyard: the songs of the birds, the sight and smell of the flowers, the very feel of the soil in my fin-gers. I am one with nature, and the loveliness and serenity that surround me provide constant opportunity for reflection and inspiration. God is very much with me in these surroundings

… which brings me to the other garden plaque that I inherited from Dad. It bears a poem that ends “one is nearer God’s heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth.” This is certainly true for me. Wherever you find your inspiration, I hope that you find it easily and embrace it! The Vestry and wardens have agreed that we want to revert to the original intent of this column. As its title suggests, its sole focus in the future will be to provide you with updates on what the Vestry and our many ter-rific ministries are doing. My big news this month is that Rahel, Anna and Sofie have found a nice apartment on Williams Street, just up from the church. They are pleased; Anna exclaimed that it will be great to still be able to walk to church – and we are very pleased that they will still be so close to us, in every way! – Patty Fox, Senior Warden

Welcome Summer! Summer weather is upon us and soon school will be out. Thoughts turn to summer vacation. Here at St. James, we continue worship services every Saturday at 4 pm and Sunday at 9:30am. Please feel free to dress casually, and appropriately for the summer warmth. Depending on the heat and humidity, our Saturday service may be held in the air-conditioned library of the St. James campus. If you vacation away from the lovely Mohawk Valleytake “Flat St. James” with you. Snap a picture of all of you with Flat St. James during your travels and post it on the St. James facebook page using #StJamesTravels, or e-mail your picture to [email protected] is a great way to remember that you are a part of St. James, Clinton, wherever you go…and St. James is a part of you! Stay in touch the old fashioned way. Purchase some post-cards and mail them to our shut-ins; contact Laura Stoll, St. James office administrator, at [email protected] for a list of names and addresses. Alternatively, bring the postcards back with you, place them in the wooden box in the back of the church and we will see that they get to our shut-ins. Imagine the joy and delight these postcards will bring! For our families with young children, or for the young-at-heart, pick up a “Take-out Church” pizza box filled with summer activities. See the article on page 5 for more information. When you visit another community for a worship ser-vice, bring back the worship bulletin and place it in the box in the back of the church by the door. We will feature them on one of our bulletin boards in the parish hall. How fun it will be to share "where we went for our summer vacation" in September! Whether Methodist, Baptist, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Episcopalian or (fill in the blank), we are all Christian, so share in that wonderful community of love in name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Finally, but certainly not last, remember the needy. As you travel, consider bringing back unopened toiletries (soap, sham-poo, conditioner, lotions, small boxes of detergent, toothpaste) from your hotel/motel stay for the guests at Hope House. There are collection boxes in the back of the church and in the Parish Hall lobby. Speaking of those in need, remember to pick up packs of juice, fruit cups and instant oatmeal for the Country Pantry Kid’s Paks. If as many of us as are able will commit to pick-ing up at least one pack every time we do our grocery shopping, this will go a long way in assisting our summer outreach min-istry project. Need help remembering? Pick up one of the tags from the back of the church and put it on your key ring as a reminder. Alternatively, make a financial donation using one of the envelopes in the pews or by sending a check made out to St. James, with "Country Pantry" in the memo line. – Patricia Jue

Volunteers will apportion the food into freezer trays to then be frozen and distributed to people in need. Drop off your food contributions Saturday or Sunday morning. Please clearly label that it is for the YNI Cook-in. Watch your weekly bulletin or newsletter for the date.

Fellowship The final fellowship event of the spring will be our annual parish worship and picnic at Kirkland Town Park, Sunday, June 19th, at 10am We will be in the pavilion to the right (south) side as you enter the park. Sign up sheets have been posted in the church and parish hall. Please bring a side dish to pass. Pulled pork, rolls, condiments, water, lemonade, plates, cups, and flatware will be provided. Please also bring along some yard games and sunscreen! Hurrah! for the outdoor weather! The Handiwork Ministry Group will continue to meet over the summer but on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, begin-ning in June. Please join us in the library at 10:30am for an hour of handiwork projects. We are currently working on lap robes and prayers shawls and baby sets (to sell at the Lutheran Home store). The Lectionary Reflection Group meets every Wednesday at 11:30 - 12:30 in the library. We look at the readings for the coming Sunday and reflect on what the words might be speak-ing to us in our lives. It's a great way to start thinking about what will be heard on Sunday and perhaps gain new insights to Christ's words. All are welcome to join us! – Terry Neil

Wine & Cheese Gathering We will have a fellowship gathering following Saturday's Worship Service on June 18th. All are welcome! Join us for some wine and simple hors d'oeuvres. If you'd like to bring fin-ger food to share, it will be appreciated, but it's not necessary. A sign-up sheet is at the back of the church.

Our most loyal Saturday acolyte Suzanne Phillips had a very special evening on May 25th at Grace Church in Utica. It was an honor for several of us from St. James, along with her parents and Grandmother, to witness Susie undertake the sacramental rites of Holy Baptism and Confirmation. Bishop Skip was there to commemorate this very special occasion. While there were several folks from around the region who were confirmed, received or reaffirmed, Susie was the only person to be baptized. As Bishop Adams pointed out - it was the Susie show and she did a wonderful job as the star. We were all very proud of her and wish her all the best as she graduates from Mount Markham this month and heads to Harwick College in the fall to study French. When you see Susie be sure to congratu-late her on all of her recent accomplishments and keep her in your prayers.

Take-Out Church There will be “Take-out Church” pizza boxes for our families with young children, or for the young-at-heart available on Sundays, beginning June 12th. Take-out Church offers opportunities to connect summer fun with church life while you are on vacation this sum-mer. The boxes contain silly games for long car rides and quiet activities like finger labyrinths, as well as table graces, conversation starters, prayer cubes, bedtime prayers, and ways to serve others. Inside the box are instruction sheets which offer short explanations. In the spirit of the “Flat Stanley” phenomenon, there will be a “Flat St. James" to color. Take him with you everywhere you go. Snap a picture and email it to church, [email protected], or post it to the St. James Episcopal Church facebook page. There will also be a few postcard stamps to send a “thinking of you” sentiment to one of our shut-in parishioners, or to a family member, or to a special St. James’ person. The idea is that while you are away from St. James and traveling, you take time to remember God and your St. James’ family. Take-out Church is a way for your fam-ily to bring your faith with you on vacation this summer. You will have opportunities for laughter and fellowship, opportunities to see and share God's awesome Creation, to praise God, pray, give thanks, and serve. When you are away, we want you to remember to take St. James with you. Have fun, be safe, and, when you can’t be with us here in Clinton, take church with you this summer!
