Salve Regina University

Salve Regina was chartered by the State of Rhode Island in 1934. Founded under the sponsorship of the Sisters of Mercy, Salve Regina was established as an independent

institution in the Catholic tradition of education, providing higher education to women and men.

The university is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc.

through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.

Project: IL e-Portfolio

• Fall 2006 release of IL ePortfolio presented a number of challenges:

– Xythos Professional Services provided updates and customized campus software

– 600 students receive hands-on instruction on how and why to use MyDATA

Page 11: Delivering Campus Web Services Through an Open-Standards-Based Content Management Platform Bill DiPietro, Xythos Software Jason Black, Salve Regina University.

Behind the Scenes

• Each student upon first logon to MyDATA has an ePortfolio folder pre-configured for use

• This folder is a publicly accessible “ePortfolio” folder set to Read Only

• Each user is allocated space to store backup files, share documents, and present portfolio web pages

How Does It Work?

Publishing access to individual portfolios is provided through a ‘wired’ customized installation of Macromedia Contribute and the individual’s Active Directory logon via WebDAV.

“Collected” files are published onto MyDATA folders. All published content is backed up on SAN

URL’s are made accessible to the public by the individual.

Project: EDCfolio

• Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards

• Sophomore & Junior portfolio– Produced and posted using Adobe

Contribute 3– MyData is one of the critical parts of the

EDC-folio process. It allows the student to collect and store all of the evidences required in the seven prompts that must be answered and demonstrated as well.

Project: EDCfolio (cntd.)

“I really like using MyData [Xythos]. It has help me reach students. They ask fewer questions about how things have been organized or what they have to do and get to concentrate on what is being taught. It has really helped some of them keep themselves organized for the first time, especially when studying for a test. No more losing assignments and if they are sick they have access to my lecture for that day.”
