1 Introduction

1.1 Dell EMC PowerProtect DD series appliances DD series are a Purpose-Built Backup Appliance (PBBA), specifically a target appliance. DD series consists of both DD series appliances and PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE). DD series provides fast backups and recovery, protects data on-premises and in the cloud, and delivers a lower cost-to-protect with leading data deduplication and bandwidth utilization. The Data Domain Operating System (DDOS) is the intelligence that powers DD series appliances. DDOS provides the agility, security and reliability that enables the DD series appliance to deliver an efficient, comprehensive, scalable, high-speed, and cloud-enabled protection storage for backup, archive and disaster recovery.

1.2 Veritas NetBackup Veritas NetBackup software is a heterogeneous backup and recovery suite for large-scale enterprises. NetBackup provides backup, recovery, archive, retrieval, and disaster recovery for a wide range of enterprise applications, hypervisors and multicloud environments. The product backs up data to disk, tape and public clouds.

NetBackup Terminology:

Master Server: Manages backups, archives, and restores. The Master Server contains the NetBackup catalog which includes the internal databases that contain information about NetBackup configuration and backups.

Media Server: Installed either on the master server machine or on one or more separate machines. Provisions the storage devices and manages the backup target such as a disk storage unit or virtual tape drive.

Client: Installed on the client machine to be backed up. Sends backup data and receives data on restore operations.

2 Configuring DD series with NetBackup using DD Boost OST Plug-In

2.1 DD Boost for Open Storage Dell EMC DD Boost (DD Boost) enables backup servers to communicate with storage systems without the need for DD series appliance to emulate tape. DD Boost increases backup performance by distributing the deduplication process between the client and the backup server.

DD Boost for Open Storage software is a licensed option that allows a DD series appliance to act as an Open Storage server for Veritas NetBackup. DD Boost for Open Storage software includes a plug-in (referred to as the Data Domain OST plug-in) that runs on the supported NetBackup media servers defined in the DD Boost Veritas NetBackup Support Matrix.

The OST plug-in version must be compatible with the software version of your protection system and with backup application configurations. DD Boost supports only combinations detailed in the DD Boost Compatibility Guide available at the Online Support site https://dellcom/support

2.1.1 DD Boost features overview

2.1.2 Reference Architecture – DD Boost for Open Storage with NetBackup

Reference architecture – DD Boost for open storage with NetBackup

NetBackup environments consist of media servers and a master server. The master server manages clients and media servers. Master server can also function as a media server. The OST plug-in must be installed on each media server. If a master server is configured as a media server, then the OST plug-in must be installed on the master server.

To integrate NetBackup with DD series appliances, the DD Boost OST plug-in is used. This plug-in includes the DD Boost libraries to integrate with the DD series appliances and enables NetBackup administrators to use all the features of DD Boost.

The DD series appliance exposes disk volumes called storage units to a DD Boost-enabled media server. Multiple media servers each with the DD Boost OST plug-in installed, can use the same storage unit on a DD series appliance as a storage server.

2.6 Best Practices

- It is a best practice to register the interface with a resolvable name using DNS or any other name resolution mechanism. If the DD series appliance is 192.168.1.1 and is named dd22.abc.com, the command to register it on the media server will be:

nbdevconfig -creatests -stype DataDomain -storage_server dd22.abc.com -media_server win-8uktouan6kj

- The OST plug-in can recover from temporary network interruptions. However, the operating system on the backup application system might terminate a job prematurely if the backup application time-outs are set too low. A best practice is setting time-outs to at least 30 minutes (1800 s)

4 Configuring DD series Virtual Tape Library (VTL) Storage Unit with NetBackup DD Virtual Tape Library (DD VTL) is a disk-based backup system that emulates the use of physical tapes. It enables backup applications to connect to and manage DD series storage using functionality almost identical to a physical tape library.

Virtual tape drives are accessible to backup applications in the same way as physical tape drives. After these drives are created in a DD VTL, they appear to the backup application as SCSI tape drives.

DD series configured as a VTL Storage Unit is connected to one of the ports on an HBA on the NetBackup media server. The DD series can be connected to the media server either directly or through a SAN switch.

Configuring Replication in NetBackup using DD series

31 Dell EMC PowerProtect DD Series Appliances with Veritas NetBackup - Configuration Guide | S2403

6 Configuring Replication in NetBackup using DD series

DD Replicator provides automated, policy-based, network-efficient, and encrypted replication for DR (disaster recovery) and multi-site backup and archive consolidation. DD Replicator asynchronously replicates only compressed, deduplicated data over a WAN (wide area network). In order to meet a broad set of DR requirements, DD Replicator provides flexible replication topologies, such as full system mirroring, bi-directional, many-to-one, one-to-many, and cascaded.

DD series replication has two types,

1. Native replication which is controlled by DD series 2. Managed File Replication which is controlled by the backup application

Native replication can be divided into three types,

1. Directory replication provides replication at the level of individual directories. 2. Collection replication duplicates the entire data store on the source and transfers that to the destination,

and the replicated volume is read-only. 3. MTree replication replicates entire MTrees

Managed file replication, which is used by DD Boost, is a type of replication that is managed and controlled by backup software. With managed file replication, backup images are directly transferred from one DD system to another, one at a time, at the request of the backup software. The backup software keeps track of all copies, allowing easy monitoring of replication status and recovery from multiple copies.

6.1 Pre-requisite

1. A DD series is already configured as a primary backup target. 2. Another DD series is available to be used as a destination duplication target. 3. Appropriate license is available to configure replication. 4. For AIR, another NetBackup Master server is configured with DD series. 5. For AIR, ensure that the Master servers are added to the Trusted Master Servers list for interdomain

operations.

Configuring DD Cloud Tier

45 Dell EMC PowerProtect DD Series Appliances with Veritas NetBackup - Configuration Guide | S2403

7 Configuring DD Cloud Tier DD Cloud Tier is a native feature of DDOS 6.0 (or higher) for moving data from the active tier to low-cost, high-capacity object storage in the public, private, or hybrid cloud for long-term retention. No separate cloud gateway or virtual appliance is required. Data is sent directly from the DD series to the cloud with seamless management using the data movement policy configured on the DD series.

NetBackup allows users to move their backup datasets to DD series active tier to cloud tier using DD series “data-movement” commands.

Overview of Cloud Tier with NetBackup

7.1.1 Pre-requisite

1. For Cloud Tier, ensure the cloud capacity license is available. 2. Ensure Cloud Tier storage is configured on the cloud provider for the DD series to support cloud units.
