Citrix XenDesktopCitrix XenDesktop provides a complete virtual desktop delivery system by integrating several distributed

components with advanced configuration tools that simplify the creation and real-time management of the virtual desktop infrastructure.

The core components of XenDesktop are:

XenDesktop Controller: Installed on servers in the data center, the controller authenticates users, manages the assembly of user’s virtual desktop environments, and brokers connections between users and their virtual desktops.

XenDesktop Database: This Microsoft SQL database hosts configuration and session information, and, as a result, should be hosted on a resilient database platform.

Citrix Provisioning Server (PVS): This component enables you to stream a single desktop image to create multiple virtual desktops on one or more servers in a data center. This facility greatly reduces the amount of storage required compared to other methods of creating virtual desktops.

Citrix NetScaler VPX: Integrated local and global server load balancing and secure remote access ensure improved availability of Citrix XenApp services and Citrix XenDesktop deployments.

This provides security and reliability while avoiding capacity over-provisioning.

Virtual Desktop Agent: Installed on virtual desktops, the agent enables direct Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) connections between the virtual desktop and users’ endpoint devices.

Citrix Desktop Receiver: Software running on an endpoint that enables the device to connect to a virtual Windows XP, Vista or 7 desktop running on a server.

Additional XenDesktop Components:Hypervisor Integration: XenDesktop can be used in conjunction with Citrix XenServer Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware ESX/vSphere for the provisioning of virtual machines. This reference architecture was tested using VMware vSphere.

Active Directory Integration: XenDesktop requires Active Directory for security services. However, unlike

previous versions of XenDesktop, the directory is no longer required by default for Controller discovery.

The Dell Solutions Laboratory — along with Citrix — has spent over 50,000 man hours testing configurations to identify the right scenarios and develop stable and scalable solutions. Dell knows it’s critical for higher education institutions to have software that works correctly and meets the needs of students and staff. Six of the most frequently used software programs have undergone extensive testing and have been validated:

• Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro CS5)

• AutoDesk – AutoCAD 2DLT• Wolfram – Mathmatica 7• MathWorks – MATLAB• SAS• IBM – SPSS

Test FindingsWhile most applications worked seamlessly during testing, the Dell Solutions Laboratory observed the following:

• If running SAS and SPSS, Dell suggests running with no less than 3GB of RAM to support performance.

• When testing Adobe Photoshop, Dell found that the color gametes displayed significantly better on traditional workstations or with a mobile computing platform than on thin clients.

• When testing with iOS, no issues were noted and the applications worked as normal. However, working within this environment is not ideal as the applications have not been designed for touch screen interfaces and the experience can be imprecise.

Dell recommends using these devices for content consumption — not for content creation. In addition, most applications tested are formatted for 12”+ screens and may be difficult to observe on smaller devices. These precision issues can be mitigated by connecting a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone via the Citrix Receiver directly to the touch screen device so that you can use the phone as a tablet to control mouse movement.

• Dell Solutions Laboratory found that certificates of authority and active directory need to be configured in a unique way in order to load the applications on Citrix XenDT.
