Issue 1 Term 4 Week 3 Wednesday 22nd October 2014
Delroy Campus – Year 7 Transition Evening
From the Principal...
Welcome back to school! Keep track of the week
numbers of each Term and help your family stay on
top of the million and one things happening this time
of year with the attached Delroy Campus Term 4
planner. It is easy to pop up on the fridge for all to see.
It has been wonderful to see students return from
holidays in full school uniform and ready to start the
term. Last term I relieved as Dubbo College
Executive Principal and I would like to take this
opportunity to thank Miss Bermingham for relieving
for me throughout this time. I am very glad to be
back as I missed the business of school life, I missed
the teachers and I missed the students terribly. I’m
looking forward to all the activities planned for the
upcoming weeks.
In Week 1 we were very excited to have the
Hon Adrian Piccoli, Minister for Education, attend
our school. Mr Piccoli wanted to visit to witness the
great programs that are occurring at Delroy. He was
very interested in how we have increased attendance
and increased engagement in the classrooms. He also
took the opportunity to participate in a Clontarf
training session and share morning tea with our
Clontarf students.
Last week our HSC students began their exams and I
would like to wish them all the best of luck over the
next month. I know that thorough preparation has
occurred and like the Dubbo College face book site
for more stories and pictures about the HSC.

On Thursday 9th October (Term 4 Week 1) NSW Fire and Rescue conducted a Rescue Education program with Year 10
students. The overall aim of this program is to reduce the frequency and severity of the tragedy and trauma caused by motor
vehicle accidents among 17 - 25 year olds.
Rescue Ed aims to harness positive perceptions of firefighters as rescuers with 'street credibility' to talk to young people about their safety on the road. The emphasis is on firefighters sharing their first hand experiences of the often tragic
consequences of road accidents, and thus guiding young people to reflect on the causes and consequences of such accidents.
Students benefited from listening to first hand experiences from representatives of NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Police and
the NSW Ambulance Service.

And who else? Presenting teachers from Wangbangalang and Warrumbungle Education
Centres
What? Celebrating the importance of earthcakes, earthworms, excretement and energy to our planet.
When? August 14th 2014
Where? Taronga Western Plains Zoo
What did we learn?
‘The corn snake has its habitat in the corn fields of North America.’ Jayde Murray Year 8
‘Eating wholefoods is better for our planet than eating processed foods. Many toxic chemicals are
involved in the production of processed foods.’ Tanisha Tago Year 8
‘There are not very many imported foods that are packaged in Australia anymore. Dates are grown in Iran.
They used to be packaged in Australia but now they are packaged in Turkey.’ Will Clow Year 8
‘Sue from Wangbangalang showed me how to make a pot for seedlings out of newspaper.’ Shanayah Kennedy Year 7
‘By 2025 there will be 9 billion people on the planet. There may not be
enough food to feed this many people if we use the same farming techniques
as we do today. We have to think of better ways to grow good food.’
Phillip Dudgeon Year 8
‘We made a milkshake by putting the ingredients into a blender which was attached to the back of a bike. The harder I pedalled the tastier the milkshake.’
Kailee Linnane Year 7
‘The earthcake was interesting because the people who showed us how to make it
explained that by using wholefoods, the cake is more nutritious to our bodies and better for the environment
as there is less processing. The cake was baked in a solar oven. No electricity needed.’ Kyle Weir Year 8

NAIDOC Trip to the Zoo
On Monday 15th September, Pink and Purple classes went to Western Plains Taronga zoo
to celebrate NAIDOC Day.
The activities that we participated in on the day included getting to meet and pet some of the animals which included snakes, a blue tongue lizard, a green tree frog, a praying
mantis and a ringtail possum. We also saw the baby crocodile and a number of different
lizards and snakes in their enclosures, one was even made out of an old car.
Next we got to make Johnny Cakes on the campfire and even added some bush herbs if
we wanted to. They were delicious with honey and golden syrup.
Lastly we got to go for a tour around
the zoo with Tyrone and then got to
have some free time in the park area.
We hope you like our photos.

New College Executive Principal to boost partnerships
Recently appointed Dubbo College executive principal Ian Nebauer has firm goals in
mind when it comes to meeting the challenges of his new role.
The highly experienced educationalist will concentrate on developing and boosting
partnerships within and outside the College, as well as focusing on making the College
Dubbo’s secondary school of choice. “The College has made incredible progress during the past few years and I would like to
be able to take it to the next level,” he said.
“Providing quality education is what it’s all about and that means strong partnerships
between primary schools and the College, so that is one area I will be working on in
conjunction with principals, staff and parents.
“Reciprocal partnerships with other education providers, employers, community
organizations and support services are also critical to the development and further
education of our students.”
Mr Nebauer (pronounced “Neighbour”), who replaced College Director Kerri Leigh-Gordon, has spent the past six years
working as State coordinator of Dare to Lead, a flagship program owned by the Principals Australia Institute.
The national leadership program has an emphasis on improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander students by providing professional support, coaching and mentoring to teams of school leaders. As well as having a strong background in leadership skill development and practice, Mr Nebauer was the first principal of
Callaghan College’s Jesmond Campus in Newcastle and previously worked as principal at Coonamble High School and
Gulargambone Central School.
He said his new role as executive principal of Dubbo College was exciting and challenging.
“This is a fantastic role because it’s giving me the ability to focus on one college and that’s a luxury,” he said.
“School leadership and capacity-building is core business and I see this as a critical part of my role at all levels at the
College.
“My experience tells me that it’s important to have a Kindergarten to Year 12 perspective and I am really looking forward
to becoming part of a network of principals in Dubbo and further west.
“My initial plan will be to meet all 300 staff of the College, listen to them and work on strengthening leadership capacities
across-the-board.” Mr Nebauer said he was pleased to be back in western New South Wales.
“It was my choice to return to the west because I feel I have an affinity with the people and I am really looking forward to
renewing some old friendships and returning to a country lifestyle.”
These Year 8 students are pictured with their Incense Burners which
they made in Mr Drew Martin’s MandatoryTechnology Class. The
students also learned about the history of incense and the various uses.
Incense is used for a variety of purposes, including the ceremonies of
all the main religions, to overcome bad smells, repel insects, purify or improve the atmosphere, aromatherapy, meditation and for simple
pleasure.

Into the Future…. 25 years from now
At the end of last term, all of the 5 support classes had the opportunity to fill a time capsule each for the West Rotary Club. On Saturday
4th October 2014, over 100 time capsules were unearthed from 1989 and replaced
with time capsules to be opened on 4th October 2039, 25 years from now.
Over the past term we discussed things that should be put into the time capsules
that would be of interest to us when looking back from the future. Items that we placed
in the Time Capsules were:
Letters to our future selves
PB4L tickets
Coins
Loom band bracelets
Photographs
Newspapers and newsletters
Magazines
Artwork
Lists of top 20 things for 2014 such as songs, movies, fashions, TV Shows
We also wrote lists of things that we would expect to change in 2039
such as technology, money, laws
