At the beginning of November, I went to Shanghai to attend Asia's largest industry trade show "China International Industry Fair (CIIF)" for the third time. Different from the past, Delta's participation this time was all planned and carried out by Delta Greentech, signifying a deeper integration inside the Delta group to move toward the next milestone. After close cooperation in the past years between Delta Greentech and Brand Management Office, a mode of cooperation based on integrated industry trade show was successfully established. In "Special Report" of this issue, we will learn about how Delta (Delta Products Corporation, DPC) maintains dynamics of innovation under the wave of rapid growth in electric vehiclesbypartneringwithUSDepartmentofEnergy(DOE),thepowercompanyofDTEEnergy,andMercedes-Benz on a project to research technology for intelligent charging of electric vehicles.
Regulations and policies accelerate maturation of the market for electric vehicles
Reduction of carbon emission has been a worldwide consensus. Major car manufacturers in the world have also been actively developing electric vehicles, with a worldwide sales volume exceeding 200 thousand in 2013, which ismorethan40percent ingrowthascomparedto2012.Throughregulationsandenergypolicies,governmentsof many countries have been encouraging automakers to devote more into the research to push for upgrade of the industry and promote development of green economy, which in turn made development of electric vehicles a criticalfactorforUSautomakerstoprofit.Thus,the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles is becoming vital because it is essential to solve"rangeanxiety."TheUSDepartmentofEnergy is actively cooperating with the industry in a hope to find solutions for charging of electricvehiclesthatsatisfyrequirementsfrompower companies, makers of electric vehicles, and users. result, and, through this research project, we are able to learn better about the needs of different users."
During the cooperation of more than two years,DeltaandDTEEnergy jointlybuiltthe largest cluster of smart-grid-connected charging stat ions in Michigan. DTEEnergyhad24unitsofchargerequipmentinstalled in MGM Grand hotel beside its headquarters inDetroitand theseunitswereopenedforusebyemployeesofDTEEnergy and guests of MGM Grand hotel. Throughactual recordingandanalysisofdata on the EV chargers from EV users, the research team was able to learn more about the information that end-users would like to obtain on charging, so that it would serve as an important reference for managing the system interface.
OnOctober29,Deltaexhibitedthefullsetofsmart-grid-capableEVchargingsolutionintheheadquartersofDTEEnergyinDetroit.AttendingguestsincludedlocalpressandrepresentativesfromUSDOE,DTEEnergy,NationalLabs,aswellasautomakerssuchasMercedes-Benz,kVA,GM,Ford,Chrysler,Nissan,Toyota,andBosch.Everyone expressed high level of interest in Delta's solution.
Participating the US DOE program is one of the best ways to get Delta name out into US industry. Winning an awardfromDOEmeansagoodstandingandjustificationtoacompany.ItgetsalotofpublicityforDeltaduringtheexecution of the DOE program.
Inadditiontocomplyingwithspecificationsfrommajorautomakersforthechargersinthefuture,anewgenerationofEVchargerequipmentmustbeabletocommunicatewiththegrid,astheusageofelectricvehicleshasbeenrapidly increasing and the overall electricity infrastructure has to be taken into consideration for corresponding expansion on the EV charging demands.
"During the night, the EV charging system can utilize wind electricity as the source of power to balance supply and demand of renewable energy on the grid; however, the overall loading of the EV charging system on the grid has to be taken into consideration during the peak time," said Dr. Zhu upon further describing opportunities and challengesforelectricvehiclesupplyequipment."Themostimportantthingfordevelopinganewproductistojoinwithcustomerstofinddemands,andweneedtoknowhowDTEEnergywouldliketomanagewindenergyandsolarpower,sothatwewillknowhowtodefinestructureofthesystem."
Delta'ssmartEVchargerfeaturesWifiandZigbeecommunication.Throughthesitemanagementsystem(SMS)developed by Delta, the smart-grid-capable EV chargers can prioritize and optimize EV charging activities of a groupofEVandPlug-inHybridEV(PHEV)workplacechargingstationsbasedonutilityenergyprofiles.ThissolutionhelpsstabilizeEVchargingdemandsforutilities,offices,orcommercialbuildings,andreducecostsforinvestmentonexpansionofcurrentpowerinfrastructure.Itwillalsobenefitconsumersbytakingadvantageofoff-peak electricity rates for electric vehicle charging.

"TrustisimportantforbecomingaTier1supplierforlargeautomakers,"saidDr.Zhuwhensharingonopinionsoncooperatingwithlargeautomakers."Thelonglifecycleforautoproductsrequiresatleast15yearsfromthestartofproduction to aftersales service and, as a result, the automakers will not be willing to go further with the business if they feel you do not have the determination for long-term cultivation."
WithadvancedlabequipmentinDetroit,DPCisabletobuildtrustfromcustomersbasedonitsactualcapabilitiesinresearchengineering."Our labequipment isconsistentwith those in factoriesandcansimulatechargingofelectric vehicles. When receiving issues from customers, our engineers can immediately locate the abnormal parameter in Detroit and co-work with related departments to propose a short-term solution to customers within 24 hours.Theplanforlong-termimprovementwillbeproposedonceactualissueshavebeenfullyclarified."
For growth and future outlook of Delta's auto business in North America, Dr. Charles Zhu humbly expressed that there were still many things to learn. Perhaps it is because of this kind of truthful attitude that the needs of customers could be truly discovered along with the most effective solution.

Theparticipationof2014CIIF isalsoamilestone forDeltaGroup in in-depth internal integration.Afterclosecooperation in 2012 and 13, DGC marketing team and BMO successfully established a mode of cooperation based on integrated industry fairs. Before the show, the two parties performed repeated scenario analysis on the group's strategy and status of the local market in order to plan for customer interactions and the main topic for attending the show, which were then carried out by the DGC team. Delta demonstrated how to design a green datacenter for enterprises during the 2014 DatacenterDynamics Converged in Moscow, Russia. In this case study, Delta's datacenter manager, Mr. Eagle Wang, introduced sophisticated cooling system methods to use when renovating a green datacenterwithinanenterpriseofficebuilding.Thekeystrategies toadopt are: cold/hot-aisle containment, chilled-water type cooling units, variable fan speed control of air conditioners, free cooling, cooling systemcombinationsfordatacenterandofficebuilding,andtemperaturesetting optimization. Using these methods a renovated datacenter can save30%oftotalenergyexpensesfortheenterprise.Ahighly-efficientand eco-friendly datacenter is the result of implementing this green cooling system design.

Delta upgrades UPS for a leading Russian pharmaceutical company <TextbyMCISBU>
Delta, togetherwith itsofficialdistributorTempestoand thesystemintegrator IBS Platformix participated on a project to replace the UPS on the premises of Akrikhin, one of the leading pharmaceutical producers in Russia. Its server rooms, located in Moscow and Kupavna,areequippedwithDelta'sModulonNHPlus60kVAUPS.
Akrikhin is among the largest Russian pharmaceutical producers ofhigh-qualitymedicines inRussia.Thecompanyhasanoffice inMoscowandafactoryinKupavna.Thepowerbackupsystemsofbothbuildings were previously not centralized. Servers were installed with several UPSs as a power back-up separately. For easier management and higher reliability, the company sought to centralize and upgrade its power backup systems.
Forthiscentralizedsystem,Akrikhinsethighrequirementsto theUPSs, includingthree-phasepowerwithN+1redundancy, and able to provide power backup for up to 20 minutes at maximum load. As the available space for itsserverroomwaslimited,thefootprintofthesolutionwasalsoaconcern.Giventheseconditions,TempestoandIBS Platformix suggested the NH Plus modular UPS from Delta as a suitable solution. Information for on-site printers is uploaded via a 3G communication module to cloud platform, through which the upper-leveladministrationequipmentconductsmonitoringandcontrolon theprinter.The3Gcommunicationmodulemainlyconsistsofa3Grouterandaprogrammablelogiccontroller(PLC).The3Grouterfeatureseditingon computation, where accuracy of information is guaranteed and controlled by comparison of values sent and received. Greeting the editorial team with smiles, Mr. Chiou is both humble and friendly which are common traits of Delta people .
"With founder Mr. Cheng's foresight and expectations, the automation team was established in 1986 from a former automation technology department to assist with the continued enhancement of Delta's production automations former managers included Mr. Steven Liu, current chairman of Cyntec, and Mr. Jinming Chen, whoisnowresponsibleforbatterytechnology.Theyestablishedanexcellent foundation for the automation team to grow stronger over the past 30 years," Mr. Chiou recounted in his story of the growth of Delta's Automation.
Joining the automation team in 1988, Mr. Chiou has worked for Delta for 27 years. Engine to strengthen Delta's competitiveness
Delta's Automation is responsible for R&D, introduction, and service for automation machinery platforms. For example,Cyntec'shotpressmini-chokewaswell-receivedbythemarketlastyear.Theautomationteamshippedabout1,000machineswithinjustafewmonths,sothenewchokecouldbeproducedinquantitieslargeenoughto receive positive feedback from customers. "During that time, our colleagues in the department took no rest so they could meet the schedule of the Cyntec team. Mr. Vincent Lin, Director of Automation, still has a deep impression of that time. "During the peak of production, we had 200 technical staff simultaneously assembling the machine. Even though their families complained about working in the office during holidays with little time to go home to eat, they had a great feeling of accomplishment."
Mr. Chiou glanced at his younger colleague and continued, "Even though Vincent looks young, he has been with Delta for20yearsand this ishis first job.The turnoverrate is very low for our team and that is why the team's technical capabilities and experience in development have accumulated for such a long period of time." With a smile Mr. Kotler said that if any enterprise got a full score of 45, he would hurry to buy its stock. A total of between 27 and 36 was a pretty good score. He emphasized that enterprises need to use indexes and scores to evaluate the effectiveness of their marketing efforts and they also need to continue keeping track of the scores.

As we stayed in the same hotel for 5 days in a row, we used the same showering and hygiene facilitytoreducewaste,fulfillingoursmallwishforenvironment-friendliness.
Save energy by taking trains, buses and walking
Thetrip toBaimatemple inLuoyang,Longmengrotto,andancientcityofKaifeng involved inter-city travelling.Therefore,webookedround-triptrainticketsbeforethetrip.Ittookus45minutesonatrainridetothetrainstationin either Luoyang or Kaifeng, where we then rode the buses that took us directly to the major tour spots. Both YuntaiMountainandShaolintempleinMt.Songareclassifiedas"5Anationalscenicarea".Eventhoughlocateddeep in the mountain, there were tour buses to take from Zhengzhou's station for long-range buses directly to the entranceofthetourarea.However,thevisitinsidethesetourareasrequiredwalkingonfoot.Walking,hiking,andstrolling along the streets and alleys while chatting and making friends, we had fun time learning about the local custom and culture.
Thecombinedarrangementoftransportationbytakingtrains,busesandwalkingofferedconvenienceandsavingof money while avoiding rip-off taxis and realizing the goal of being healthy and staying in shape.

Eventhoughwemadeathoroughplanforourtripandtheplaceswevisitedweretrulymagnificent, therewerestill some imperfections. Due to both human issues and geographical factors, the air of many places in Henan Province in early October was highly polluted, especially the PM 2.5 and PM 10 in Kaifeng and Yuntai Mountain, whichcontinuedto fallbetween300and500.Thebeautifulscenerywasshrouded in thedark fogandtheairirritated both the nose and eyes. As a result, we deeply felt there is a long path toward achieving environmental-friendlinessandenergy-saving,whichrequiresusalltostrivefor.

"An Environmental Exhibition: Run for Water, Water for Run" held by Delta Electronics Foundation (DEF) at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park came to a successful conclusion on October 8th , and proved to be a hit having attracted over 35 thousand visitors during its 26-day display including over 60 school-group visits. Standing by its objective of continuing on environmental educat ion and protecting the environment by reusing displaying items of the exhibition, DEF decided to authorizeTaiwanWaterResourceHall of Central Region Water Resources Office from Water Resources Agency and Rivers ofFormosaExhibitionfromtheBuddhistCompassionReliefTzuChiFoundationtocontinuetheexhibition inJijiTownship,NantouCountyandZhongheDistrict,NewTaipeiCity.

With the two-star marking for green buildings as a goal, it will build a campus with low carbon emission based on a level of 7.5 degrees (with setup forresistance inkeyareas) inearthquakeresistance,sothat teachersandstudentscouldreturntoasafeandcomfortable learning environment soon. After completion, this will be the second green-building school in Sichuan built by Delta.
