    Teaching the Fly Offense

e use three different styles of teaching our run offense.

e Linemen Learn Rulese really only have about five rules for the lineman to learn. There are many styles of offensivee rules, and I dont think one style is better than another. The key is we have a concise, simple

ay to teach our zone, veer, trap, and reach blocks.

e Receivers Learn Conceptse teach concepts to the receivers in the passing game and the run game. Our day one run

me rules for our receivers are;Play away from me (Block corner on me).Play up the middle (Block closest safety, no safety, closest corner).Play to me (Block corner on me).

e Backs Learn Pathsach play requires the back to run to a certain spot and find daylight. The play name is the path th

ck receiving the ball will run. In our two back offense, the back not receiving the ball will eithert a path name or have an option of choosing a path to run. We have paths for each spot a backuld align for us in our formations.

is system creates a lot of variation. By mixing and matching back paths and blocking rules, yo

n quickly amass a wide variety of plays. I have found that coaches and players do not alwaysel comfortable with new plays, but have great comfort with wrinkles described and taught with

    ay one terminology.

Inside Zone Blocking Inside zone blocking is designed to use the movement of the defenders against them as

the running back finds the crease in the defense. Though inside zone plays are usuallycalled to the guard or tackle holes they can break open anywhere from tight end to tightend, depending on how the defense attacks.

Inside zone blocking rules allow linemen to use the movement and attack angles of thedefenders against them. Whichever way the defender chooses to go, he is sealed off and

the running back is prepared to cut off the block. Running backs are taught to attack theline-of-scrimmage (LOS) before cutting on inside zone plays. This gives the blocks theneeded time to develop. The rule for the running back is that his feet must replace the feetof the lineman before he can cut.

Inside zone blocking rules are keyed by whether a lineman is covered or uncovered. Acovered lineman (one who has a defensive lineman aligned across from him) will execute a"stretch base" technique. This means he will take a short stretch step to the play side (stepright on a 22, left on a 33) and attempt to control the play side shoulder of the d-lineman.The purpose of the stretch step is to invite movement by the d-lineman, then immediatelyengage him.

Uncovered linemen (no d-lineman across from them) execute a "stretch double" technique.Stretch double also calls for a stretch step to play side. The uncovered lineman thenattacks the backside shoulder of the same d-lineman, creating double teams on most of thedefensive linemen.

NOTE: the linemen operate on a system that moves to play side, NOT toward the holecalled. On a 22 dive the play is called to the right guard, but the key is that it is a right sideplay. The right tackle's and right tight end's play side shoulders are their RIGHT shoulderseven though the play was called to the left of them. The 2 hole is to the right side of thecenter, so right is play side for everyone on the line.

In executing the stretch double technique, the uncovered lineman assists the covered

lineman to the play side; i.e., if a center and play side tackle are covered, the play sideguard executes the stretch double with the tackle, NOT the center. If side-by-side linemenare both covered, the play side lineman is "on his own," and executes a stretch base blockwithout double team help.

When executing the double team, both linemen follow what some coaches call a fourhands-four eyes technique. This means they have four hands on the defensive lineman andfour eyes on the linebacker in the area (their zone- which is where the name of the blockingcomes from). When that linebacker commits to attacking the LOS one of the linemen chipsoff the double team and blocks him. The other lineman must be in position by then to takeover the block on the lineman by himself. The linebacker is technically the responsibility of

the uncovered lineman, but in practice either lineman can chip off and take the linebacker, depending on their position.

The goal of the stretch and stretch double is to create a cutback lane for the running back. When executed correctly, the "stretched" defender has moved in the direction of the call, and the stretch double prevents him from reaching a running back that has "cut back"against the flow of the play. If the double team can prevent the down lineman from makingthe tackle, and the "chip off" block prevents the play side linebacker from doing the same, the play can quickly get into the secondary.

A very important block on an inside zone play is the backside seal block that allows therunning back to cut back all the way to the backside TE spot if the whole defense fights to

the play side. Depending on the formation used, the backside tackle, tight end, or runningback can be used to block the backside.

    Outside Zone Blocking

The offensive line blocks Outside Zone Rules. These are similar to Inside ZoneRules in that they use the covered/uncovered read and play side direction. Theblocking techniques, though, are different, as the plays are designed to get the

defense moving laterally across the field and create seams in their coverage. The covered lineman executes a "rip-reach" technique. He takes an angle step at

the play side shoulder of the defensive lineman and rips with his backside arm. Hisjob is to turn the defensive linemans shoulders and get him off-balance andprepared for his partner.

The uncovered lineman executes a "pull and overtake" technique. He takes ashallow pull step toward play side (sometimes called a bucket step) and works totake over the block of his partner.

The covered lineman wants to rip through his d-lineman to get to the linebacker,

while his uncovered partner takes over his original block. If the covered lineman isunable to rip through because the DL fights to the outside, then the coveredlineman stays with that block and the pull and overtake lineman pulls around thatblock and finds the linebacker.

Approach: This refers to where the motion back begins, and what speed he approaches theuarterback at. There is no magic as to where to start the motion man. We have had him start at

ht slot or be outside the numbers. We want the sweeper to aim one yard behind theuarterback. He is running fast to the mesh point, but he is not in a full sprint. I tell our guys, you

e in fourth gear which looks fast, but once you receive the ball, you have a little more speed toe. With reps, the players develop a comfortable speed to approach the quarterback. They coaching point is to make each approach look the same.Mesh: This refers to the quarterback taking the snap and turning 180 degrees so his back is toe defense and handing the ball to the sweeper. A key point is that the quarterback controls theap. Do not allow the sweeper to chop steps and try and time the mesh. If the timing is off, it isways the q u a r t e r b a c k s fault. Ideally, the quarterbacks body should hide the handoff from

e defense, creating deception. I let the quarterback turn in a way that is most comfortable to himreality, his turn takes him 12 to 18 inches away from the center. After handing the ball to the

weeper, he will run one of his paths.Slide step: The slide step is a critical component to being an effective sweeper. When the

weeper receives the ball or is faking, it is important that he pushes off his inside foot and movese body width away from the LOS. I have used ice skating or rollerblading as examples of the

pe of move it is. It is a subtle move, but it allows the sweeper to maintain speed around therner, or make an up field cut if that is necessary.Ball handling & faking: As the sweeper is slide stepping, he is securing the ball as any runninck would do. If he does not receive the ball, it is important that he pumps his inside arm andlds an imaginary football in his outside arm all the way around the corner. By doing this, the faks the potential to pull defenders to the sweeper.

    Sweeper QB Mechanics

Catch: The sweeper after slide stepping and securing the football, will try and catch the lead

ck. In teaching this, we put a running back in an off set position (i.e. split back, off set I, off set inone backset). This enables the back to be a lead blocker on a sweep. The sweeper wants to tage lead backs outside hip with his inside arm. As they turn up field, we want the sweeper closeough to touch the lead back. We use the analogy of being wingtip to wingtip like jet fighters. Thsition puts the sweeper in perfect position as he comes around the corner. If there is no leadck, he visualizes one and catches a phantom back.Set up the block: As the sweeper heads up field, we stress having a plan to make a move onfensive backs. Simply put, the sweeper attacks the defenders technique and cuts opposite of

e block. If the defensive back has outside leverage, he stretches and cuts up. If he has insideverage, sweeper attacks up field and cuts out. It is important that the sweeper works on theseoves and also works on making moves on defenders in space. The speed part of the offense ispplied by the sweep play. We tell our players it is the fastest play in football. T h e deception pathe offense is supplied by the quarterbacks back being to the defense effectively hiding the bal

addition, by mixing up paths run by a second back in a two back set, or the quarterback in a onck set, the defense will generally honor the fake. We take great pride in our faking. We stress

at there are two ways to move a defender. You can physically move them, which best case is ard or two, or you can move people by faking them, which often moves them five yards or more.
