Dementia + Recreation National Conference This opening conference presentation will shine a light on the innovative work being done at Life Care Aldinga Beach Court in South Australia. Rejecting “siloed staff roles” & task orientation, their Capability Model embraces international best practice including Montessori principles that focus on ability & reablement through the use of meaningful & purposeful ‘roles’ for residents. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Food to share, memories to brag about, a quick gardening quiz, a chat with a new mum and her baby, the seasons alive, a gentle stretch (we shan’t call it exercise), the dogs ‘in tow’ …. as an ‘activity’ this is clearly so much more than ‘a walk in the park’! Merridy Schofield, Bachelor of Social Science, Diploma of Business, Post Graduate Diploma in Dementia Studies (in progress); Residential Services Manager - Aldinga Beach Court, Life Care, SA. Brenda Wells, Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager, St Michaels Aged Care Facility, Vic. For almost a decade our presenter has been staging musical events that bring together 20 aged care services across Melbourne. This session is about connections, community, family … and a big dose of "can do” attitude. Paul Brophy, RN, Manager, Sambell Lodge, Vic. Do our residents still just want bingo, skittles, uninviting morning teas and boring guest speakers each week? What if we involved circus acts, art based activities such as felt making, creating a real pub within the facility or serving high teas with fine bone china listening to a string quartet as well as live in artists in the secure ward? So how do you get your staff and volunteers to come on board and think differently? This presentation is about the process of challenging staff to remove the boundaries, open that creative door and to think outside the square with future social care activities. Sue Atkinson, Social Care Manager, Island Care, Tasmania These unique & diverse ‘stories from the field’ are designed to engage, enlighten & motivate! From the session title, add a fourth “C” word of creativity and you have the essence of this session. Grounded in her passion & practical application of these key words, our presenter will take you on a memorable musical journey. We have decided that for 2016 & beyond, we will “write up” the conference in a mixture of styles – short or long, poetry or prose, maybe just key words or concepts … the idea is to ‘prick’ your interest, provide insight, explore ideas, highlight key words/phrases but most of all inspire you to attend!

Dementia + Recreation National Conference

The Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) is a Melbourne based not for profit organisation. One of the programs delivered by the BSL's Retirement and Ageing division is Banksia Services, which is located in the Melbourne (Vic.) seaside suburb of Frankston. Banksia Services delivers a range of person centred programs from a purpose built facility as well an innovative community and centre based programs for people with dementia in order to enable their carers to have a break. In July 2013, the BSL began to deliver a day program for people with Younger Onset Dementia. The program is grounded in a human development and enhancing capabilities approach. A unique component of this program is that the participants have been active in the research and program design. This presentation will provide insights into the program, the co-design process, outcomes achieved, lessons learnt & how this model may be utilised in a range of service settings.

A session to highlight happenings, promote programs and generally update on you on the other ‘stuff’ we couldn’t fit into the conference program.

Lisa Astete, Senior Manager, Day and Respite Programs, Brotherhood of St Laurence and Kylie Levett, Program Coordina-tor, Banksia Services, Brotherhood of St Laurence, Vic.

Wayne Woff, Manager, Total Aged Services; et al

When planning activity programs for people living with dementia - too often we find ourselves “sanitising” the content of the program of all the things that really give us a good old giggle! This session will give you some ideas for reminiscing with lingerie, sing along with some of the “naughty’ versions of favourite songs, and finding sometimes that it’s fun not to be totally politically correct! All the activities described have been “tried & tested” and the session will include ideas for people with both early and more advanced dementia.Sarah Yeates, Manager, Caladenia Dementia Care, Mooroolbark, Vic.

Focusing on storytelling, creating connections, building relationships and strengthening communication, this presentation will canvass the possibilities presented by social media in the provision of leisure/lifestyle services. A great chance to consider where you are currently at & where you can go into the future …. so many options & opportunities. The session will include practical ideas you can use today to grow your online community & support your work offline. Let’s have a conversation!Amanda Terranova, Marketing & Communications Director, Aged Care Channel; Non- Executive Director, Senior Rights Service

We offer the following words/phrases regarding this fitting finale to the conference - changing address, advocacy, inclusion, ‘why not’ mentality, community linkages, not doing it all ourselves, quality of life/leisure, liaison, new experiences, options, opportunities … “sorry can’t stop for a chat, I’m off sailing!”Allison Ferguson, Lifestyle Coordinator - Arcare Hope Island, Qld

This session will discuss the background, framework, introduction, ongoing management & future plans for the STARLife program. What’s it all about? - you’ll just have to come along & listen!Sue Nelmes, Quality and Risk Advisor, BlueCross Community and Residential Services

The Princeton View Art Exhibition is about far more than the works of art on display. The aims of the exhibition include:

Accompany our presenter as she takes you on a tour of the exhibition & its staging.Carine Newton, Leisure & Lifestyle Coordinator, Princeton View Aged Care, Vic.; Bachelor of Science in Health Studies & Introduction to Art as a Therapy Certificate, Queen Margaret University Edinburgh, Scotland
