Exercise Scenario: A mass causality incident that generates between 30 casualties and results in 5 fatalities.
This incident is caused by the explosion of a propane cylinder on the midway, located at food tent.
Event: 2015 Durham Fair
Time of Day: Saturday, April 25 , 2015
Weather: Cold and Windy the Temperature is 45 degrees
While working on replacing a leaking valve of a large stand up DOT 450 pound cylinder, the work crew accidentally knocks the tank to the ground and the valve breaks off, causing a leak. The escaping gas is ignited by a nearby grill The subsequent fire and explosion causes a variety of injuries and burns; and starts a fire in the several adjacent tents and a small wood building. There is also a structural collapse of tent structure, with entrapment of victims. This event also causes injury to several animals in the area.
