Create an Environment The first step in configuring the Management Console is to describe your existing

Page 3: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

environments. An environment is loosely defined as a sysplex or non-sysplexed z/OS LPAR.

Note: If you have an environment already configured, go to the “Add an IMS Connect” section.1. Click Configure > Environments in the main navigation banner in the Management

Console. The Environments page displays.

2. Click Add Environment on the left panel. A form displays for you to define your environment.

3. Optionally, name and describe your environment. This would be the logical name of the system that users of the Management Console can identify.

Add an IMS Connect Next, identify the components that are present on the environment, starting with IMS Connect. Adding an IMS Connect provides the connectivity between the Management Console and IMS. IMS Connect must be configured to be a member of the IMSPlex.

1. Click + in the Components section and select IMS Connect. In the following graphic, the Environment is called EC03127. The right pane displays a panel for configuring IMS Connect.

Page 4: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

2. Enter the followingvalues:

1. Host name or IP address: EC03127.VMEC.SVL.IBM.COM

2. Port: 7777

3. IMSPlex name: PLEX1

Page 5: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

3. Click Validate to have the Management Console discover other IMSPlexes which are configured for this IMS Connect. The Components table is updated with the discovered

Page 6: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

IMSPlexes.

1. After validation, PLEX2, a second IMSPlex is discovered, select it and click +.

Discover Operations Manager Resources Discovery is a process the Management Console performs to find all IMS resources associated to the IMSPlex. This content is stored in a local cache that is later used to display various dashboards. If you do not discover IMS resources, the Management Console will run in LIVE mode and performance and operational cost will be higher. Also, the search function will not include any IMSPlex resources without having been discovered.

1. In the Components table, select PLEX1 and click Discover. When the discovery is complete, repeat this step for PLEX2.

Add an Additional IMS ConnectAdding additional IMS Connects provides the Management Console the ability to use another IMS Connect in the event one should fail. Default behavior is for the Management Console to use an IMS Connect that has been configured with SSL.

If you have more than one IMS Connect configured, you can stop a port and start it on another port in the IMS Connect dashboard. For example, if you stop the IMS Connect listening on 7777, the Management Console will dynamically choose port 9999 for connectivity to IMS.

Hovering over the icons next to the IMS Connect in the Components table, indicates which connections are active and in use.

Enterprise ViewIn the Enterprise View, you can see all of your configured environments. If you have created more than one environment, they will appear as an expandable tree. The enterprise tree when extended displays the IMSPlexes, IMS's and IMS Connects.

1. Click Resources. The left navigation displays the enterprise tree. Expand this entire tree.

Note: The first time the tree is expanded after a discovery, it could take a couple of seconds to display the enterprise tree.

After the IMSPlex is expanded, two IMS Connects (HWS1,

HWS2) and two IMS's (IMS1, IMS2) were discovered. These resources were found during the discovery process.

Page 8: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

Enterprise View - IMSPlex1. Click PLEX1. The IMSPlex members that are registered with Operations Manager

(OM) display. Each members attributes and aggregated status color display.

Enterprise View - IMSPlex: Resource type drop-downEach of the resources (Programs, Routing Codes, Transactions, Databases) are supported at the IMSPlex level. This means that if you click on an IMSPlex in the Enterprise View, you can see all of your resources that are part of the IMSPlex. For example, if program AUTPSB11 is in IMS1 and IMS2 under PLEX1, you will see two rows in this view where one entry will be for IMS1 and the other for IMS2.

1. From the Resource type drop-down field, select Programs. The following graphic shows the type of information that is displayed. You can try this for Databases, Routing codes and Transactions.

Page 9: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

2. Optionally, select the attributes icon. A window opens displaying numerous attributes for the selected resource. Choose which columns or attributes you would like to see.

FilteringMost resource views support filtering. Filtering allows you to choose any column and filter based on any number of conditions (equals, contains, starts with, etc...). Applying the filter replaces the grid with your filtering options. Additionally, you can stack filters such that you can have more than one filtering condition for any number of columns. This could be useful if you wish to find all resources matching a given name, that might have a particular status.

1. Click No filter applied. The Filter window displays.

2. Provide the following values in the filer conditions and click Filter.

Relationship viewsDouble-click a row to display its relationship view. Relationship views correlate resources which communicate with each other or are logically related. These relationship perspectives provide a unique way of identifying which resources are potentially problematic at a glance.

1. From the Resource type drop down, select Transactions.

2. Double-click EMHTX2 to view the transaction relationship perspective. The relationship perspective can be defined by:

▪ In the upper left corner, the transaction attributes display.

▪ In the top center pane, the related program for this transaction display.

▪ In the top right corner, the related routing code attributes display.

▪ Across the bottom, the databases related to this program and transaction

display. This is helpful when you are trying to diagnose what might seem like a problematic transaction when in fact it is a database error.

Page 11: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

3. Optionally, double-click the DEDB3301 database. The database view displays. The associated database attributes and related programs are listed.

4. Click the Related Programs icon to enable the related programs.

Note: If you had IMS Tools, those tools would dynamically appear next to the database attributes view and provide you with a holistic view for this resource.

Page 12: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

As you move throughout the tool, there is a bread crumb trail that serves as a quick navigation to link you back to where you came from. You should use this preferred way of navigating the Management Console.

ResourcesResources that support start/stop and connect/disconnect are identified by the icons in the pane with the attributes. Choose a resource whose status is represented by a green icon “normal” (circle with a check mark).

1. Click ADDPART.

2. Click the red square icon. The Stop Transaction screen displays.

3. Select the check boxes for Q and SCHD.

MessagesThe Management Console displays messages for various reasons. Messages appear in green, redor yellow at the top of a screen, indicating connectivity problems or messages returned by the operations manager as a result of an action you took. After submitting the stop status, a green message field displays with our command and indicates the update was successful. Initially, the message is collapsed, you can click on the bold text to expand it.

Page 13: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

Additional examples of messages that the Management Console can receive are shown in the following graphic.

Note: The OM message provided a link to read more about the return code and reason text.

HelpMost panels come with a form of help, indicated by the ? in the upper right corner. When clicked, a content pane from the right slides out and presents you with related help content.

When a status is red, yellow or green, you can click on the icon and the help panel will open. The help panel indicates the cause of the red, yellow or green icon to appear. Optionally, click the red icon next to the transaction to view the help.

Page 14: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

Command promptYou will find a small black command prompt icon on every panel. When you hover over this, you can see the IMS Command that was used to generate the data for a particular pane. The Management Console does not always obtain data from IMS, but it will always go to IMS for status and aggregate the data it has cached to increase performance and reduce overhead in IMS.

Command ConsoleThe Command Console provides the ability to send IMS Commands (Type1/2) from a browser,

display the results as text, a filterable grid, print and individual tabs for each command. Additionally, you can route the command to any Environment, IMSPlex and resource. Routing is dynamically and presented in the drop-down fields.

1. Double-click on any view that has a command prompt icon. Doing so, the command displayed by the icon will be filled in the Command Console along with the route path

Page 15: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

where the Command Console was activated from.

Note: Clicking Submit will execute your IMS command and Clear History will delete all of your commands that you have in your history.

2. Type a command into the command field and click Submit. Each command you enter is stored in the history which is accessible from the drop-down arrow in the command text box to the right. Also, you can clear the text box and begin typing and your history will automatically be searched.

When you type your command, the route field is highlighted in yellow. This is because a command was entered and it is telling you to notice that it has defaulted to ROUTE ALL. You might want to click the drop-down and change that.

3. Select the drop-down for Sysplex, IMSPlex or Route. The drop-downs are dynamic in that they are going to reflect the actual members and options at the current time.

Note: Each command executed displays results in a tab. This is useful if you want to compare the result of two commands.

Page 16: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

In this example I have run three commands:

1. QUERY TRAN NAME(*) SHOW(ALL)

2. QUERY PGM NAME(*) SHOW(ALL)

3. DIS OTMA

At the bottom of the panel, you can View Grid, View Text and Print Result. Command results are defaulted as text. If it is an IMS Type2 command, you have the option to click View Grid and the result will be presented as a grid with filtering options.

Optionally, you can click the green icon next to the text Message. A detailed message displays on a new pane with command statistics. This is referred to as an accordion pane because it can slide up and down. By clicking on it, the results are removed from view and the history is presented.

Page 17: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

Enterprise View - IMSClicking on an IMS in the enterprise tree provides you with an IMS dashboard where you are shown what resources are communicating with this IMS. The IMS attributes presented in this view are aggregated from various commands (Query IMS, Query Member and Query IMSPlex), the related resources are OTMA XCF Groups, Structures, ODBM, Dependent Regions and Recon Dataset.

1. Click IMS1 under PLEX1. Each pane displays the command result, provides help and supports disconnect/connect. There is also a maximize icon to the right of these panels that will expand the current view to show other attributes.

WARNING: Do not Connect/Disconnect connectivity for the ODBM during this shared lab. It will disrupt the lab for others and may even delay the lab while we try to recover resources.

The IMS view also supports graphical updating of attributes. Each of the resources can be graphically updated.

1. Click IMS from the enterprise tree and select Transactions as the resource type.

2. Select whichever transactions you want and click Single Edit to update a single

Page 18: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

resource or Batch Edit to update multiple resources with the same attribute. All of the attribute options display in a drop-down, limiting the options you can enter.

Enterprise View - IMS ConnectSimilar to the IMS dashboard, IMS Connect has similar support and displays related resources. The IMS Connect dashboard shows the IMS Connect properties, Datastores, Ports, IMSPlexes, ODBM's and Remote IMS Connects.

1. Click HWS1 under PLEX1. Review the resources and their options.

WARNING: Do not disconnect any resources in this view. It will disrupt the lab for others and may even delay the lab while we try to recover resources.

Searching the EnterpriseThe Management Console provides search capabilities for IMS Resources (Transactions,

Page 19: demo - Management Console for IMS and DB2 for z/OS - 4.26.2015

Programs, Routing codes and Databases) across the entire enterprise. You are not limited to an IMSPlex or environment, all configurations are searched.

1. In the search field, type EMHTX2. Begin by typing the letter E, then H and so on, you will notice that as you enter the resource name, the search narrows down the scope of the resource. Also notice that in the example below, EMHTX2 appears in many environments and IMSPlexes.

What do all the different icons mean? Each resource has its own icon. A transaction and program do not share the same icon as does start and stop when compared to connect and disconnect. The icons are noted below in the table.
