Demographic for Science Fiction
How I’m evaluating demographic:
One of the best resources we have for film audiences is that of ratings/reviews. We cannot of course monitor everyone that buys a movie, or visits the cinema to see it. But ratings due to the profiles that must be set up to review them serve as a valuable resource. By looking at the reviews for movies and the volumes thereof we can assess demographics.
Moon Ratings- 2009
The primary audience of Moon appears to be men aged 18-29 as just under 80,000 more men have seen the film than women and the largest group of men that have seen the film are aged 18-29
Star Trek Ratings-2009
This is an example of a movie that has a stigma of a mainly male audience however in practice we can see there is actually a larger female audience. This shows that science fiction can appeal to all ages and genders.
Children of men ratings- 2006
Children of men has the sort of audience ratings that you would expect from a gritty earthbound Sci-Fi. About 140,000 more men rated it than women giving it a higher rating indicating that this is the target audience of the film. Again the 18-29 year old is the group that has most watched it.
The Hunger Games-2012
The viewers for this are surprising as due to the fact that the protagonist is female and the fan base is from a novel- more readers being female. However the majority of viewers were male as a pose to female.
My overall analysis
• Overall Sci-Fi films seem to appeal more to a male audience aged 17-29 for this reason this will be the target audience for my product.
