Demography
What is Demography?
Demography is the study of: 1.Populations2.Population density3.Historical Trends in Population Growth
Birth RateIt is not the number of births that matter but the relationship between the number of births and the size of population
Birth Rate (b) is the number of births for every 1000 people
In Canada this is 10 births for every 1000 people
Death Rate
The Death Rate (d) calculates the number of deaths per year for every 1000 peopleIn Canada this number is about 7 per year
for every 1000
The Rate of Natural Increase
The birth and death rate can be put into a useful measurement called the natural rate of increaseBirth rate (b) − death rate (d) =
rate of natural increase (r).
− = ⬆
Let’s Practice...Calculating Birth
Rate:
Country# of Births Per
year Population Birth Rate
Canada 330, 000 32, 207, 000
Russia 1,458,000144, 526,
000
Togo 191, 000 5, 429, 000A country’s birth rate is calculated by dividing the number of births in one year by the population and
then multiplying the results by 1000
Let’s Practice...Calculating Death
Rate:
Country# of Deaths per
yearPopulation
Death Rate
Canada 226 169 32 207 000
Russia 2 365 826 144 526 000
Togo 62 433 5 429 000
A country’s death rate is calculated by dividing the number of deaths in one year by the population and
then multiplying the results by 1000
Let’s Practice...Calculating the Natural Rate of
Increase:
CountryBirth Rate
Death Rate
Natural Rate of Increase
Canada 10/1000 7/1000
Russia 10/1000 16/1000
Togo 35/1000 11/1000
*Why is it important for a country to know what their Natural Rate of Increase is?
Net Migration RateImmigration and Emigration rates are
calculated in the same manner as birth and death rateNet Migration Rate = Immigration
Rate -Emigration rate
Let’s Practice...
Year Immigration Rate Emigration RateNet
Migration
2002 134282/31,372,600 x 1000
12,601/31,372,600x 1000
2003 104248/31,660,500 x 1000
12,663/ 31,660,500 x 1000
Statistics for Canada
*Remember Net Migration Rate is immigration rate - emigration rate
Population Growth Rate…is a measurement that combines both natural increase
and net migration to calculate the overall growth ofa country’s population.
To calculate: Population Growth Rate = natural increase rate +
net immigration rate/1000 x 100 (%)
Compounding
Doubling Time - is the time it would take for a country’s population to double at the country’s current rate of population growthRule of 70 - is when you divide 70
by the population growth rate to estimate how many years it will take for the country’s population to double
Let’s Practice...Calculate Doubling
Time:
Country70/population growth rate
Doubling Time
Canada 70 / 0.8%
Togo 70 / 2.4%
