You will forgive me if you sense an underlying excitementin the words that follow below. But this leader is beingwritten just a day or two before Demolition magazine(together with DemolitionNews.com and Demolition-Jobs.co.uk) embark on the latest phase of theirdevelopment. Starting 4 January 2015, all those titles (plus a handful ofother, non-industry publications) will be pulled togetherunder the banner of a single company called ChambersMedia at a new, dedicated office in Worthing. There are a number of reasons that this is exciting for usbut there is only one reason why this should be exciting foryou. And that reason is more. More news, morefeatures, more articles, more photos and more videos. Until now, all of the demolition-related titles mentionedabove have been generated by one person me in adesolate corner of my home which I laughingly refer to asDemolition News Towers. But thanks to our joint ventureagreement with Chambers Media, that will no longer bethe case. Starting in January, all of the advertising sales and

The High LifeFarming and demolition mightseem unlikely bedfellows. ButRichard McCulloch of ScottishDemolition Contractor Dem-Master not only has a foot inboth camps but manages tocombine the two profitably.

    Mark Anthony reports.

    6

My visit to the Dem-Master site at Tarfside Ovaltook place just a few days before the companyjoined forces with fellow Scottish contractorSafedem to fell three of the four blocks via acontrolled explosion.

Even though the exclusion zone had beenchecked and double-checked and extensiveprotective measures had been set in place, Dem-Masters Richard McCulloch was still organisinginnovative solutions to further isolateneighbouring houses from potential damagefrom falling debris. One of these solutionscame in the shape of a blast protection wall oflarge bales of hay summoned from the familysfarm.

But dont be fooled into thinking that Dem-Master is a farmer taking a stab at demolition.

  • The company is firmly established as one ofScotlands Big Four, has an enviabledemolition pedigree, and has a 72-metre tall aceup its sleeve too.

    Entrepreneurial Style

Richard McCullochs first encounter with thedemolition sector came in 1986. Keen to breakfrom the farm background, McCulloch alwayshad a desire to branch out on his own, heworked in specialist diamond drilling and sawingwith Holemasters, initially in the south ofEngland and then across his native Scotlandafter seizing the opportunity to purchase thewhole operation of Holemasters Scotland Ltd.

He says that his father-in-law, who runs a verysuccessful UK wide business, passed on a lot ofuseful knowledge in the early years. I wasntan achiever at school, he says. I left school

    9

with no qualifications and had no businessacumen but I have never been afraid of hardwork. The greatest piece of advice my father-in-law gave me was never let your ego get biggerthan your pocket. It is a rule I have lived byever since.

In typically entrepreneurial style, McCullochcame to demolition by seizing an opportunity. We were doing a lot of robotic demolition usingBrokks and working as a sub-contractor to someof the biggest demolition companies and maincontractors in the Scotland at the time, herecalls. By 1993, demolition made up morethan 50 percent of our annual turnover andcontractors were trusting us with larger andmore complex demolition works. So I decided toform Dem-Master Demolition Ltd, a stand-alonedemolition contracting company of my own.

  • At this point in the business, most demolitionmen would claim that it has been onward andupward ever since. But McCulloch readilyadmits that the company did encounter a majorobstacle on the one occasion when he wentagainst his father-in-laws advice and placed egoabove pocket.

We won a faade retention contract Edinburghin 2001. At the time, it was the largest schemeof its kind in the UK and looked really good onthe company portfolio. But it had huge designand technical challenges he recalls. Theindependent engineer underestimated thecriteria across the board so we had to redesignthe contract while the works are in progress .To make matters worse, the scheme called fortwo tower cranes and on the day the secondcrane was due to be installed, the crane hirecompany went out of business. We had roadclosures in place but we couldnt work. In theend, we lost about 16 weeks on that job. When we started, we had over a million poundsin the bank, McCulloch recalls. By the timewe finished, we were half a million in the red.

    Hard Graft

Through some more trademark hard graft, thecompany survived and ultimately prospered.

But there is no doubt that this experience hasleft McCulloch more cautious. Sometimes wehave to walk away from business. We havebeen offered work in London and the South Eastwith existing clients. We keep on top of our jobsand by watching other companies we know it isdifficult to sustain the requisite level of controlon a contract when working away from base.

Given that hard-earned caution, the companysdecision to invest the best part of 2 million onthe countrys largest high reach excavator mighthave been greeted with a degree of surprise andscepticism. We had just secured a place on afour-year Glasgow Housing Associationframework for the demolition of a number oftower blocks across Scotland. Safedem wasconsolidating the use of explosives so I knew we

needed an ultra-high reach that would set usapart and allow us to tackle some of thesebigger blocks, he explains. By the time weplaced the official order with Liebherr andKocurek, we had orders for over 2 millionpounds of demolition ahead of us waiting forthe machines arrival.

As it transpired, that delivery date was delayedby almost six weeks, leaving three tower blocksat Iona Court in Govan standing and leaving theCompany with some pretty serious schedulingissues. There were a few heated words at thetime but, in fairness, both Liebherr and Kocurekhave been extremely supportive ever since.

The machine based on a Liebherr 984C andcapable of reaching up to 72 metres weighs inat some 230 tonnes making it far and away the

largest high reach in the UK. It has recentlycompleted the demolition of the fourth towerblock at Tarfside Oval (which could not beimploded due to the proximity of neighbouringhomes) and has a strong forward order bookthat stretches well into next year, reaffirmingMcCullochs initial confidence.

    Engendering loyalty

Not that he is resting on his laurels. Thecompany has invested heavily in a recyclingoperation at Bathgate which helps the Dem-Master maintain a 97 percent recycling rate. The company also invests in its staff, andMcCulloch clearly believes that We know thatour staff are our biggest asset and we work hardto keep them with us. We have awarded theteam with two pay rises in the past seven

    14

months. If they do two hours of night-timeemergency work, we pay them for the wholenight as they have been good enough to get outof bed, he asserts.

Workloads are on the rise in Scotland and thereare a number of opportunities for goodoperators on road and motorway work. We tryto maintain our team by treating them well.

It is a philosophy that has clearly worked. There are 15 of the Dem-Master team are agedover 60, a sure sign of loyalty in action. Over70 percent of our work today is negotiated andwe have a list of clients that we work forrepeatedly, Richard McCulloch concludes. Ifour clients demonstrate their loyalty to us as acompany, then we must pass that on to ouremployees.

The company is firmly established asone of Scottish demolitions Big Four but it isclearly not without its quirks. How manydemolition contractors can claim to have fundedand hosted a school poetry and literarycompetition, for example? Listening back to therecording of my interview with the companysPat and Peter Reilly, most of my time with themwas spent laughing.

    Double Act

Brothers Pat and Peter Reilly work a lot like adouble-act; one feeding the other with lines thatare either well-rehearsed or the product ofsomething akin to comedy genius. But whenconversation turns to demolition, things get veryserious very quickly. The pair take issue with atender process that favours low price overquality or ability; the unbreakable bad habits ofsome demolition workers; and a generation ofCDM co-ordinators with formal qualifications tospare but who are sadly lacking in demolitionexperience. They also have plenty to say about abitterness that pervades the demolitionindustry, particularly at a time when competitionis fierce.

    17

  • R e g i o n a l r e v i e w

If a painter and decorator tenders for a job andmisses out, he will move onto the next job, PatReilly says. When that happens in demolition, the losing contractor spends ages complainingabout the company that won the job andquestioning their ability to do the work. Comparisons to builders and decorators is arecurring theme. The brothers use the sameanalogy to question how some demolitioncompanies win work by satisfying the clientsrequirement at tender stage only to change themethodology to suit their own skill sets (or lackthereof) once work commences.

If you employ a decorator at your home, youchoose them because they have demonstratedtheir ability to carry out the work to yoursatisfaction, Peter Reilly says. If they turnedup on day one with a different wallpaper thanthe one you had agreed, youd be pretty upset.

    18

    Weighting Bias

The companys primary gripe, however, is with atender process that remains skewed in favour oflow price over quality. We invest heavily intraining and the latest equipment. We workhard to ensure that our systems and proceduresare compliant. But all of that counts for nothingwhen the weighting of a tender is skewed 70percent in favour of price, Peter Reillycontinues. That weighting is biased towardscowboy contractors that are willing to cut costsand cut corners. There are some parts ofScotland where we can find ourselves competingwith a local farmer who is planning to usetractors running on heavy diesel to carry out thesite clearance works.

Thankfully, Reigart reports that most of its workthese days is negotiated and repeat business, afact that has allowed the company to carve itself

  • a lucrative niche and to concentrate on someother, somewhat unlikely outside interests. In many ways, we work below the parapet. We are not constantly seeking publicity but wedo what we do without fanfare, Pat Reillyexplains. For the past ten years we have workedin collaboration with North Lanarkshire Counciland the Youth Arts and Literacy Guild insponsoring a poetry competition to promotecreative writing and poetry throughout NorthLanarkshire. Also as a company they were themain sponsor of the Family Zone at the annualDumfries and Galloway country fair. We recently hired the high reach simulator fromthe NDTG to encourage children to consider a

career in the demolition sector proved to be aresounding success.

    Success but No Succession

It is the dream for most family businesses to setin place a succession plan that will see thelegacy passed from generation to generation.Reigart is not most family businesses. Reigart seems destined to be a single generationcompany, with little sign of succession by theoffspring of the current directors. But this doesnot appear to be a cause for concern for Peterand Pat Reilly. Although they clearly retain apassion for the business, both give a sense of adesire for a wider industry change.

    19

  • On a scale of one to 10, there are somedemolition workers that will never be more thana six. Regardless of training and experience, they will never be able to write a methodstatement or a risk assessment. But all toooften we see those guys that are a six working asan eight, Pat Reilly concludes. There are justsome elements of the industry that will neverchange. We can give them the best equipmentand the best training but they will still takeshort cuts. They seem to believe that justbecause they have done things a certain way for15 years with another company that this will beacceptable here. It isnt. We operate a twostrikes and youre out policy because, ultimately, our reputation and the safety of ourteam depends on it.

The use of the Italian-developedTop Down Way system to

demolish two Scottish towerblocks is not just a step forwardfor the demolition industry but a

cultural leap too, as MarkAnthony reports.

The sun is shining, the sky overhead is azureblue and I have just been handed an invigoratingyet tiny cup of genuine Italian espresso by a manstraight out of central casting for La Dolce Vita. But I am not in Milan, Sienna or Rome. I am inGlasgow. And, furthermore, I am severalhundred feet above the ground atop a towerblock that is being systematically demolishedfloor-by-floor directly beneath my feet.

Welcome to Top Down Way, a demolition systemdevised by world-leading demolition contractorDespe and used for the first time in the UK byDundee-based Safedem.

    Seeing is believing

I have written about Top Down Way a number oftimes since its official worldwide launch in2012, but this was the first time I had seen thesystem in the flesh. From the foot of theWhitevale tower (the system had alreadyreduced the neighbouring Bluevale tower to a

six-storey nub) the system looks exactly as ithad been described. The top of the block hadbeen encapsulated on all four sides by amodular steel cap which was clearly doing agood job of preventing ground level noise issues. But having ridden the mast climber to the floorbelow the Top Down Way, my traditional dontbelieve the hype cynicism dissipated and wasquickly replaced by a they have literally thoughtof everything sense of admiration.

Entrance to the working part of the Top DownWay is via a steel trap door hatch and ladder, both of which have been built to order and thatprovide a physical link from Scotland below toItaly above.

As this is only the second outing for the systemoutside of Italy, Despe has provided some of themanpower and equipment used within the TopDown Way. And that equipment includeseverything from reduced headroom excavators inthe familiar Despe white livery, through thechrome-finished espresso machine that providesthe workers with the daily caffeine fix, to thestraight-handled shovels used to keep the steelwalkways clear of debris.

The cultural divide does not end there. Theteam of Italian workers that spend their workingweek in the home of haggis and the deep-friedMars bar spend virtually every lunchtime at thenearby Coias Italian restaurant, an arrangementset in place by Safedem managing directorWilliam Sinclair to ensure that his Italian crewfeels at home for the duration of the works.

    Floor by Floor

The system itself is mounted on 12hydraulically-actuated support legs which sit ontop of the building. At the same time, the TopDown Way is clamped to the four sides of the

  • R e g i o n a l r e v i e w

building to provide a combination of edgeprotection and debris trap that keeps men, machines, dust and arisings firmly within theconfines of the modular system.

One of the most notable effects of theencapsulation system is the unspoken feeling ofsafety it engenders. Walking around thebalconies that once circled the blocks, thedizzying feeling of creeping acrophobia are ever-present. And even with a waist high wall andguard rail, there is the feeling that the buildingwould like nothing more than to force you off.Within the Top Down Way, all concept of heightis eliminated.

    24

Even though the system extends beyond theouter edge of the structure, there is always asolid steel floor beneath your feet. In addition, the outer walls of the system extend morethan a storey upwards. If you really wanted tofall out of the system, youd need to bring yourown ladder.

TopDownWay it is an auto-descending systemwith a hydraulic drive system and is controlledby an automated system that handles itsmovements and security systems. It can beadapted to suit individual buildings, it isinstalled on top of the structure and

encapsulates the top three storeys, allowing theremoval of the windows, the demolition of thefloors and the containment of the debris. As theworks proceed, the platform descends to thenext level by means of controlled modeoperations. The building is demolished storey bystorey using a pair of low-headroom eight tonneexcavators equipped variously with hydraulichammers and concrete crushers.

At Bluevale and Whitevale, that equipment andsystem combination whittled the towers at arate of a floor or more per week.

  • R e g i o n a l r e v i e w

Despite its modular construction, the Top DownWay system is not suitable for all buildingshapes and is not, by any means, the panacea ofall top down demolitions. But it is an enviableengineering feat that marks a giant leap forwardfor safety, containment and efficiency. Dont besurprised if the system makes anotherappearance on a tower block near you very soon.

Although we have spoken on the phone and viaemail, its a few years since I last met David Clarkeface-to-face. And, at first glance, very little seemsto have changed. The distinctive white hair andbeard combo that earned him the nickname thesilver fox is still very much in evidence. Thetanned features speak of a man with a continuingpassion for sailing and golf. The acerbic andcaustic manner that made him one of the NFDCstoughest presidents is undiminished. And whenhe says that people have started to mistake himfor new Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, it is clearthat the self-deprecating humour has not beendulled by the passage of time.

But David Clarke is a changed man. And he hasevery right to be. In 2008, following a disastrousand costly gasholder demolition contract, Clarkewas forced to shut down the company his fatherhad started. Bouncing back from that would havebeen hard enough.

But, just over a year ago, Clarke was diagnosedwith bowel cancer. While it was caught sufficientlyearly for an operation to provide an all-clearprognosis, it has clearly left Clarke relieved, chastened, reflective and oddly - grateful.

    Dented Pride

Clarkes multitude of trials and tribulationsbegan with the winning of a contract todemolish a redundant gasholder in Southport,Merseyside. The company had devised amethodology to tackle the works but was toldby the client that they were expected to use ahuge crawler crane that had been hired forthe duration of the contract. Unfortunately, high winds on the contract meant that thecrane didnt turn a wheel in five weekswhilst clocking up a hire rate of around5,000 per day.

We were literally haemorrhaging money butwe were tied in to a full-term hire from whichwe couldnt escape, Clarke recalls. Ultimately,we convinced the client to allow us to tackle thejob using the methods we had devised and we gotthe job done. The client was very understandingand it seemed likely that we would be able tonegotiate two further gasholder contracts as aresult of this first one. But I got a phone call tosay that the other two had to go out to tender. Irealised how exposed that left us and drove intoIpswich to find an insolvency practitioner thatafternoon. To add a bit of belated salt to thewound, those two gasholders have since beendemolished using the method we developed.

Clarke readily admits that effectively surrenderingthe business that his father had built and which hehimself had grown was extremely tough. I camevery close to leaving the demolition businessaltogether, he admits. I felt an obligation to myold man and, of course, I had a team of peoplearound me with whom I had worked for manyyears. I found it very difficult to admit that I hadfailed so I also had my own personal pride to dealwith.

That pride also coloured Clarkes temporarywithdrawal from the industry. I was determinedthat we would not go for a pre-packed CVA asthat sends entirely out the wrong signals and I feelis immoral, he recalls. I have always tried to behonourable in business and to act with integrity. Ithink that stood us in good stead as even ourcreditors treated us with sympathy and empathy.

    Bouncing Back

Chastened by the loss of his company and with hispride dented, Clarke effectively withdrew from thedemolition world for the best part of six months. There was a time when I genuinely didnt knowwhat I was going to do. I had offers ofemployment from a number of fellow demolitioncompanies but, with the benefit of hindsight, Idont think they would have wanted me as anemployee and I dont think I was really cut out towork for anyone else, he says. But I sat downwith what remained of the CDC team and weagreed that we wanted to start again.

The team said you andyour father supported us,now its our turn tosupport you. I could nothave even consideredcoming back without thatsupport.

Clients were equallywilling to overlook abriefly troubled past. Thefirst job we won after our returnwas a roadside row of houses demolition contractfor the Highways Agency. Quite rightly, theyasked about our ability to complete the works. Itold them that if we didnt finish the job, theywouldnt have to pay us, Clarke says.Thankfully, they were willing to work with us onthat basis. But we delivered the job and wehavent really looked back since.

    Demolition Diet

That return to the demolition fray happened in2009 and, despite a widespread recession, ClarkeDemolition Company has grown gradually. Butthen, just as Clarke would have been forgiven forthinking the worst was over, the worst landed in hislap.

In January this year, David Clarke was diagnosedwith Stage 2 bowel cancer. It was a bloodyshock. Men are so stupid, he asserts. I sawthe signs a good 12 weeks before I evenmentioned it to my wife, Jill. It was another eightweeks before I actually went to see the doctor. Iwas initially given the all-clear by my GP but, amonth later, I was still concerned and I sought asecond opinion. A week later, I was on theoperating table.

Thankfully, surgeons caught the cancer in time andthe prognosis was about as good as it could be.According to my oncologist, there is everylikelihood that I will die from cancer. But it wontbe this one.

Despite his stoicism, the operation and thesubsequent recuperation process was to take ahefty toll on Clarke. His post-op scar burst openand his weight plummeted from 12 stone 10 tonine stone two pounds. I looked like a skeleton,he recalls. I was stooped, slurring my speech. Iwas absolutely pathetic. But, thanks to thesurgeon and the support of my family, I haveslowly got back to something approaching a fullrecovery.

Having got so dangerously close to a pre-startmeeting with his maker, you would expect Clarketo be a paragon of healthy eating and nutrition. But Clarke has never been one to swim with thetide. Having lost so much weight, my doctortold me to avoid fruit, vegetables, pulses and fibreand to concentrate upon protein and stodge,David Clarke concludes. I owe a lot of myrecovery to KFC burritos and fries. This, surely, is the first time that the demolitiondiet has had genuine health benefits.

  • So when client joint venturecompany TaylorWoodrow/BAMNuttall (TWBN) -was awardedanother, similarstationimprovement andexpansion contract at the nearby Tottenham CourtRoad station, Micor was the obvious choice tospearhead the preparatory works.

    Ambitious Project

Tottenham Court Road on London UndergroundsNorthern Line is one of the busiest tube stationsin the capital. Not only does it serve the variousnearby theatres, restaurants and bars in TottenhamCourt Road itself, it also leads onto Oxford Street -the busiest retail street in Europe that attractshalf a million visitors each day.

In 2013, Essex-based Micor Limited was engagedto carry out above and below ground demolition tofacilitate the improvement and expansion of theworld-famous Victoria Station in the heart ofLondon. The companys innovative, on-time andon-budget solution to that logistical challengeearned Micor plaudits from its client and otherstakeholders.

Micor Limited has been calledupon to repeat its above and

below-ground demolitionsuccess at a second London

Underground station. And thistime, the company was requiredto innovate on an almost daily

    basis.

  • Tottenham Court Road is a key linkwithin the Crossrail scheme currently Europes largest civilengineering project - and with anestimated 1 billion contractvalue represents the biggesttransport investment in LondonsWest End for decades.

Built over 100 years ago as two separate tubestations, Tottenham Court Road was not designedto cope with the almost 150,000 passengerjourneys that are now made through the stationevery day.

With the expected rise in passenger numbersinterchanging between London Undergroundservices and Crossrail in 2018, the existing stationis being upgraded to meet the expected rise indemand for this key central London station foryears to come.

Alongside the upgrade of the existing tube station,Crossrail is building a new station the length ofthree football pitches four storeys underground.

A new street level ticket hall will be constructed atDean Street, with the station box continuing fivelevels below ground at a depth of around 25metres, providing access to the new Crossrailplatforms.

To facilitate these extensive works, a variety ofbuildings in the area bounded by Dean Street,Diadem Court, Great Chapel Street and OxfordStreet had to be demolished to make way for themodern looking ticket hall.

    Hit the Ground Running

The TWBN joint venture was named principalcontractor in 2013 and, based upon its success atVictoria Station, Micor was awarded the demolitionworks package in September 2014.

    35

  • Within days, the team assembled to tackle theVictoria Station contract was reassembled atTottenham Court Road.

According to Corridan, a key element of the workswas an expansion of the public spaces and arealignment of the escalators serving the station toaccommodate the anticipated increase in traffic. TWBN had already carried out some preliminaryinvestigation works and installed some temporaryworks, recalls Micor Limited principal MichaelCorridan. We were working to a strict 12-weekprogramme so we had to hit the ground running.

In simple terms, our job was to take the top offthe station and creating a void to allow TWBN tocarry out their expansion and improvement works. That relatively simple challenge was made moredifficult in several ways. For one thing, the rapiddeployment meant that there was no time for theMicor team to carry out its own investigationworks.

Furthermore, the station and the surrounding roadsand thoroughfares were to remain open throughoutthe works with no disruption to rail and car traffic, pedestrians and local businesses.Even though we had carried out a very similarcontract at Victoria Station, every day at TottenhamCourt Road was like a voyage of discovery,Corridan explains. Very early on, we discoveredthat the drawings we were working from wereinaccurate. Some structures were missing, somewere thicker and some were thinner thananticipated, and many joints were either in thewrong place or not there at all. Having discoveredthat inaccuracy, we took the decision to disregardthe supplied information and work purely on whatwe could see for ourselves.

  • Going Freestyle

Admirable and justified though that approachmight have been, it placed greater demands uponthe 12-strong site team who were required tofreestyle their approach.

Each day started with an analysis of the worksand, where required, additional and task-specifictraining was provided to ensure that we proceededsafely and efficiently while maintaining the tightcompletion schedule.

This system was backed by an early warningsystem in which all members of the Micor teamwere encouraged to report any and all specificchallenges, pinch points and potential hazards.

The companys on-site team and head officemanagement team could then adjust workplans and schedules and notify the clientwithout incurring delays.

Arisings from the works approximately1,200 tonnes of concrete and 150 tonnesof steel was removed via a 160 tonnecapacity crawler crane. The companyrecorded a 98 percent recycling rate tounderscore the environmental credentialsof the Crossrail project.

Equipment and materials were deliveredto the site and arisings removed usingMicors in-house Fleet Operator RecognitionScheme (FORS) Gold accredited vehicles.

These were managed through a systematiclogistics strategy that ensured seamless andefficient access/egress to the site at all times. The company also deployed suitably qualifiedtraffic marshals at the boundaries of the site.

    38

    o n s i t e

At the height of the works, Micor Limited had 10men on site including two black hat supervisorsworking side-by-side. In all, the company clockedup approximately 10,500 hours without a singleLost Time Injury (LTI) report.

  • When the smoke subsided, it was clear that thedamage to the 40 metre tall steel tower wascatastrophic.

Temperatures within the rubber-lined FGD4 vesselhad approached the melting point of steel, causingthe structure to buckle under its own weight and tosubside non symmetrically overall through thetower by approximately six metres (15 percent). That partial collapse had twisted, bent and brokena number of the pipes, ducts and access walkwaysleading to the absorber. The fire had alsodislodged much of the external cladding which wasnow being blown loose by the high windsexperienced in this exposed location.

On 31 July 2014, a fire brokeout in the FGD4 absorption unit

at the 2,000 MW FerrybridgeC power station in West

Yorkshire sending plumes ofblack smoke billowing into the

sky. It took 75 firefighters tobring the fire under control.

FGD4 was immediately shut down with emissionsfrom the coal-burning process diverted to theFGD3 unit just a few metres away for scrubbing anddesulphurisation before being dispersed harmlesslyinto the atmosphere.

    Stamped on by God

The scene that greeted J. Bryan (Victoria), thespecialist demolition company appointed todeconstruct the fire-damaged structure, was oneof devastation and uncertainty.

    40

    o n s i t e

    J. Bryan (Victori Unleashes Fire

  • The absorber looked like a giant Coca Cola canthat God had stamped on, recalls managingdirector Mark Bryan. It was clear that FGD4 hadpartially collapsed but it was impossible to tellwhat was holding it up or in which direction thestructure was collapsing.

With live power station infrastructure active besideand below and with 30,000 kVA overhead pylonsjust metres away, the first job facing the J. Bryanteam was to understand the collapse, to make thestructure safe and to engineer a dismantlingsequence that would not impact upon theoperational power station.

We knew that if we didnt get it right, we couldtake one of the UKs key sources of electricalenergy off-grid, Bryan says. In addition, withinvestigations into the cause of the fire ongoing,we had to retain and protect the inside of theabsorption unit for forensic testing.

The unique solution, devised in conjunction withour partners Mammoet and consulting engineersWYG, involved the erection of an externalexoskeleton to support the 300 tonne FGD4 andto provide a safe working environment for the J.Bryan team as the structure was deconstructed.

We have carried out several similarly complexprojects in the past and we knew that togetherwith Mammoet, the worlds largest heavy liftingcompany, we could devise an engineered solutionthat would get the absorber down safely withoutimpacting upon the operations of the powerstation.

    Engineered Solution

Before that exoskeleton could be installed, however, J. Bryan had to carry out some extensivesite investigation, civil engineering and enablingworks.

Our investigations revealed that some sections ofthe ground would be unsuitable to support the 500tonne crane needed to assemble the exoskeleton,Bryan says. We built a crane foundation andcrane pad to provide a stable base from which allthe necessary lifting operations would beconducted.

Over a period of three weeks, the crane was usedto assemble the exoskeleton; four 46-metre highlegs anchored by a strand jack tensioning systemlinked to hundreds of tonnes of steel ballast.

    41

    ia) Ltd. Power

  • This structure, which was designed off-site, wasbuilt to incredibly tight tolerances with justmillimetres to spare in some areas. Mounted ontop of this unique structure was a travellingoverhead crane that would be used to supportand lift heavy steel sections as they were cut fromthe absorber.

The steel of the FGD4 structure was all heavysteel and ranged in gauge from 15 to 25 mm sowe needed a safe and flexible way to supportthe individual sections as our team cut themaway using hotworks techniques, Bryanasserts.

To the best of our knowledge, this type oftemporary overhead crane has never beenused this way before but it worked perfectly. With the gantry crane in place, the absorptiontower just began to shrink before our eyes. Once the inside of the vessel was exposed, aspecialist team from Scottish and Southern Energycovered the base of the FGD4 with a 150 mm layerof glass filings to protect the forensic evidencecontained within.

    Trained to Succeed

At the height of activities on site, J. Bryan(Victoria) Ltd. had 18 demolition workers onsite, excluding the crane and heavy lift crews.

Each working day began with a toolbox talkand daily briefing. Those briefings weresupplemented by additional training thatincluded hotworks, confined space and workingat height together with task-specific briefingsprior to particularly challenging aspects of theworks.

Despite some delays experienced whenwind speeds exceeded the seven metres/secondlimit for conventional crane lifts, J. Bryan (Victoria)Ltd. kept the complex and challenging projecton schedule as the travelling overhead craneutilised for the dismantling could work in galeforce winds.

The buildings comprised a mixture of architecturalstyles, varying from a 19th century bay windowfour storey building, to a 1960s structure. One ofthe structures was previously the famous Frascatirestaurant, a popular haunt for Victorian Londonsaristocracy and elite.station.

    Scope of Works

As a result of such varying construction types -many originating in the 1920s - Eriths scope ofworks included the design and installation ofextensive facade retention schemes. The designof those temporary works was carried out by ErithGroup subsidiary, Swanton Consulting Ltd. These were based upon extensive investigationworks prior to the commencement of the project.

Those investigations informed a detailedtemporary works scheme - in collaboration withthe client team designed to ensure the stability ofthe structure, help reduce the project duration, andultimately to deliver optimum value to the client.

Other key challenges facing the Erith team was thediversion of electrical power utilities beneath thebuildings basement; temporary weatherproofing ofexposed party walls and floor slab over part of thePrimark store; extensive asbestos removal; andcomprehensive scaffold and site hoarding erection.

Back-propping to the floors was placed throughoutthe buildings prior to the demolition. This wascarried out with a combination of three tonne miniexcavators and hand tools for the upper levels, anda 13 tonne excavator at the lower levels.

All materials arising from the works were recycledexcept for asbestos, which was safely removedfrom site prior to the commencement of the maindemolition works.

By the completion of the main demolition works, some 000 tonnes of material had been removedfrom the site with an impressive 00 percent of allarising being recycled.

In addition, Erith assigned a number of dedicatedhealth and safety dedicated personnel on a fulltime basis. These included a full-time health andsafety manager, a visiting health and safety auditor, and an external specialist auditor to ensurecompliance was of the highest possible standards. All staff on site were required to undertake ErithsSeven Steps to Safety training which focuses onseven fundamental steps to creating a saferworking environment whilst simultaneouslychallenging practice and rewarding health andsafety innovation.

At the height of the works, there were as many as00 Erith Group workers and sub-contractorsworking on the Oriana site. All told, the 00-weekproject amassed 00000 man hours without a singlereportable health and safety incident.

Although the process of safely demolishing abuilding in the heart of Londons West Endshopping district was complex, perhaps the mostchallenging element of the project was ensuringthat neighbouring residents and businesses werekept informed and suffered minimal disturbancethroughout contract period.

To this end, Erith nominated a neighbourhoodliaison officer to host meetings with local residents, business owners and stakeholders and to act asthe intermediary between local people and themain contractor while demolition was in progress. It was a system that paid dividends.

While the work was still ongoing, Erith Groupreceived an unsolicited message from PrimarksPaul Richards: Just a courtesy email to say a bigthank you for your professionalism during thedemolition works on Oxford Street and the helpthat you have provided to myself and the storemanagement team over the past 13 months. • Rock below green lines requir-ing profiling back to grade.

The construcon of a new 30 story hotel at the juncon of 34th Street and 9th Ave in Manhaan required the excavaon of deep foundaons in very dicult rock condions. For obvious rea-sons, drill and blast is not an opon when exca-vang in Manhaan. As a result, contractors are forced to look at alternave methods to break rock.

With several years experience excavang in New York, there are few excavaon contractors with more experience in the area than the Red Hook Construcon Group. Using a mixture of drilling with chemical and mechanical rock spling tech-niques combined with hydraulic breakers, Red Hook excavated down to the required level.

Profiling the walls back to the site boundaries proved to be extremely dicult due the very hard nature of the rock. Regardless of the size of breaker employed, progress with profiling went at a very slow pace. The breaker was unable to break material o the wall surface because the chisel kept bouncing o the wall surface. In addi-on to slow progress, important components in the breakers were rapidly wearing out resulng in expensive maintenance costs.

    Site Condions

The boundary between two dierent rock types passed diagonally across the job site. On one side, the rock was a dark grey schist; hard but relavely easy to break and excavate. On the oth-er side was a light and dark, banded gneiss; ex-

    Production Results

The drum cutter was brought on site to see if it would accelerate progress in profiling the walls that had proved to be so difficult using breakers.

When this report was written, the ER 2000 drum cutter, installed on a Kobelco SK500 supplied by Com-pany Wrench, had spent 4 x 12 hour days working on these walls, In this time, it came close to completing the profiling work on the two walls, a task that the contractor had spent over 4 weeks trying to achieve.

In addition to profiling, the contractor carried out some tests using the ER 2000 drum cutter to do some floor excavation. Progress proved to be very slow in the hardest areas and it was decided to go back to using the drill and burst techniques.

    Pick Consumption

Before starting with the drum cutter, the contractor knew that pick consumption would be high. When using the drum cutter intensively, between 25 to 50 picks per being changed per day.

To reduce pick consumption, maximum oil flow was reduced to reduce rotation speed in free air. By reducing the speed when the drum cutter makes contact with the rock, we reduce the opportunity for the rock to wear the surface of the pick and extend pick life.

When evaluating the costs of replacing picks, this must be compared with the costs and results of alter-native methods.

    Conclusions

In such hard operang condions, no one expects miraculous producon rates. However everything is relave and compared to the costs and progress achieved with alternave profiling methods, the drum cuer provides an eec-ve profiling soluon. The high pick consumpon is not due to any poor design in the drum cuer but due to the very hard and abrasive rock characteriscs. These condions are responsible for the lack of progress and higher than average costs using more tradional excavang methods.

The designers at Terex Finlayhave been busy. Really busy.

As a result, the companysproduct range is bursting with

new products and will beboosted still further by severalnew innovations waiting in thewings. Demolition magazine

    reports.

If someone had thrown a net over the CatplantQuarry at the end of September, they wouldprobably have captured representatives of justabout every worthwhile aggregates, wastemanagement, construction and demolition wasterecycling company in the UK.

The great and the good of these disparateindustries descended upon the Doncaster quarryto check out the latest products from crushing andscreening equipment giant Terex Finlay. And theywould not have left disappointed. The companyhad put on an avowedly non-superstitious displayof 13 machines, several of which could bedescribed as new, and at least two that appearedunder the coming soon banner.

    The Shapeof Crushersto Come

  • Into the Jaws

The new Terex Finlay J-1170AS is a highperformance primary mobile jaw crusher builtaround an aggressive Terex 1,100 x 700 mm jawcrusher with a proven track record in recycling, aggregate production and mining applications. A key new feature of this model is the on-boarddetachable sizing screen

The jaw chamber provides excellent materialreduction and product sizing in the processing ofblasted quarry rock and ore material. The jawchamber is also available with optional hydraulicrelease, a useful feature when crushingconstruction and demolition debris. The hydraulicrelease option has an automatic overloadprotection system to prevent damage byuncrushable items in the feed material.

Hydrostatic transmission of the jaw chamber offers

operators reversible operation in the event of ablockage. The hydrostatic system also providesvariable chamber speed to suit given applications.

The crusher features hydraulic assist Chamber CSS

(Closed Side Setting) adjustment, and can bechanged in a matter of minutes.

The large 9.6m hopper has hydraulically folding

sides and an innovative hydraulic self-lockingmechanism to provide efficient and faster machine

set up and tear down times.

The J-1170AS with its onboard sizing screen will

enable operators to produce a specd productwithout the need for a secondary screen.

    65

  • The sizing screen can also be detached without theneed for additional lifting gear means that themachine can be used as straight J-1170 jawcrusher, giving the operator versatility forapplications that do not require sizing, says salesand marketing director Nigel Irvine. When youcombine these factors with the excellent crushingcapabilities and the ease with which the machinecan be transported ensures thedemands of owner operators andcrushing contractors are easily met.

    Cone Heads

Although the company was notgiving away too many details, attendees at the open day weretreated to a sneak preview of thelatest model in the companys line-up of track mounted cone crushers.

The C-1545 is built around a TerexTC-1150 cone crusher that provideshigh throughput levels and excellentproduct cubicity. The machinebenefits from fully hydraulic assist Closed Side Setting adjustment, and canbe changed in a matter of minutes.Powered by a Tier 4F/Stage IV Scaniadiesel engine developing 331 kW at arated 1,550 rpm, the C-1545 utilises adirect drive transmission through a wetclutch.

A metal detection system on the unitsfeed belt features an auto-top facilitythat protects the cone from tramp metal while a purge system ejectscontaminants from the machine.

  • In addition to the different demolition grapples, breakers and pulverisers, the demolition team alsomade impressive use of the HM 2000 hydraulicmagnet to demolish structures and sort demolitionwaste. There is now nothing to stop the wideningof the A 8 to 6 lanes or construction of the parallelhigh-speed Wendlingen-to-Ulm railway link.

"A logistical masterpiece," declares Jrg Hamann, spokesman for Deutsche Bahn Projekt StuttgartUlm GmbH, in praise of the meticulously plannedfeat of civil engineering.

Required to make way for planned infrastructureimprovements, demolition of the bridge, includingall ancillary tasks, was scheduled to be completedwithin just 14 hours. The contracted companyFischer Weilheim GmbH effortlessly finished thetask well within the given time frame. They used 8caterpillar excavators with an operative weight ofup to 50 tons to remove the 1,500-ton "BlaubeurerWeg" reinforced concrete bridge measuring 64metres long and 6 metres wide.

    74

    k i t ta l k

A reinforced concrete bridgeover the Autobahn 8 betweenMerklingen and Nellingen in

    Southern Germany wassuccessfully demolished

overnight due in no small partto the efficient, reliable

    performance of Atlas Copcohydraulic attachments.

    Bridge Falls to Atlas Copco

    Might

  • Even if the technical procedure for bridgedemolition is broadly similar every time,Schmid affirms that each project has itsown special character. "Each bridge is aunique piece." This particular overpassspanning the A 8 did not feature a centralsupport.

As a result, excavators could not operatefrom above, the usual approach, but from

down below only. It was therefore all the moreimportant that attachments could be appliedexactly where they were needed using precisely theright amount of force.

It was not only the time-tested grippers andbreakers which helped to dismantle the bridgesuccessfully; a HM 2000 Hydro Magnet also gavean impressive performance. As a rigid magnet forcarrier vehicles between 14 and 45 tons, it iseminently suitable for separating scrap metal fromother demolition waste. It ensures greater profitthanks to optimum use of scrap steel and alsoprovides fast, highly effective sorting and efficientrecycling. What's more, cleared construction sitesmean significantly less damage is sustained bymachines and equipment.

Now the bridge removal is complete, the DeutscheBahn project company is now starting to build anew overpass structure across the A 8 with anoverall length of around 87 metres and a height ofup to 6.4 metres. Costing around 600,000 euros, the replacement structure should be finished byJanuary 2017.

    76

    k i t ta l k

Several heavy-duty Atlas Copco grippers, breakersand concrete pulverisers weighing up to 4 tonswere used as attachments.

Joachim Schmid, the demolition company CEO, isimpressed by the capabilities of these state-of-the-art machines: "Such structures would have beendynamited in the past." Today's excavators andtheir attachments are so effective that such ademolition project can be completed in next to notime. "This was a construction job where comingback to finish the task the next day was not anoption," explains Schmid regarding the need forreliable machines and work processes.

Tasks were completed in quick succession on theconstruction site. As soon as roads were blockedoff, workers disassembled the crash barriers andcentral reservations and then lay down non-wovenfabric and gravel to protect the road surface. Next, the bridge railings were removed followed by thesolid concrete sections and the entiresuperstructure.

  • The JCB 155 SSL combines the key strengths ofJCBs conventional skid steer range with a packageof demolition specific features to make an idealsolution for the challenging demolitionenvironment.

The machine delivers unrivalled access todemolition sites performing soft strip tasks insideand ground clearance applications outside. Thelow operating weight ensures a light floor loadingand the JCB can be lifted to upper floors courtesyof four lifting eyes which have been specificallypositioned to minimise the possibility of machinedamage when the lifting chain constrains.

JCB has developed a purpose-built skid steer loader to meet

the specific and rigorousdemands of the demolition

    industry.

    JCB PutsDemolition on the Skids

JCBs unique PowerBoom design uses a singlearm, rather than the conventional two-arm skidsteer design, affording unrivalled visibility. Thisenables the use of a left side entry door - allowingthe operator to enter and exit the machine clear ofthe attachment and loader arm regardless of armposition. There is also a large emergency exit whichcan prove crucial in potentially hazardousapplications. These innovative elements combineto make the JCB models the industrys safest skidsteers.

The JCB 155 SSL boasts a range of features whichhave been introduced to improve serviceability. O-ring face seal hydraulic fittings and a simplifieddesign result in 38 percent fewer parts while a newtilting cab design gives technicians improvedaccess to the machines power train and hydrauliccomponents. The JCB skid steer also features alarge rear service door for easy access to theengine and daily checkpoints.
