Which pressure washer should I buy?

The facts:

Pressure washers fall into three main product categories, which determines the material qualiti es, the cost of manufacture and therefore the sales price asked in the market place.

1. Hobby machines: these are the cheapest on the market and can be determined by the use of aluminium cylinder heads, high speed motors and stainless steel pistons. They are designed as limited life machines which should only be used on a 60% duty cycle. This means that during a 1 hour period the machine should only be worked for 36 minutes in total. In practi ce this means that if you wash your car and put it away that’s OK. If you spend three hours washing everything in sight the machine will overheat and excess wear will occur shortening the life of the product. Petrol powered machines have lawnmower engines and are direct coupled to the engine. Hoses and lances are all plasti c and not very durable.

2. Commercial Machines: the next level up from hobby machines, they are bett er constructed with more features. Beware, some are high speed motors and some sti ll have aluminium cylinder heads. What you want at this level of product is a brass cylinder head and preferably ceramic pistons and 1450rpm motors. Commercial machines can be 2800rpm or 1450rpm. 2800rpm motors are 60% duty cycle and 1450rpm are 100% duty cycle. (100% duty cycle can be used conti nuously.) Petrol and diesel powered machines tend to have pumps running at 3000rpm or 3600rpm and are bett er than hobby class machines with some even having brass heads and ceramic pistons too. Don’t expect then to draw their own water, this may work for the fi rst couple of months but seal wear will soon cause the performance to drop dramati cally.

3. Professional Machines: this level is aimed at professional users who want machines to work reliably day aft er day. All professional machines have 1450rpm pumps and motors, they will all have brass cylinder heads and the hose and gun will be steel reinforced. All 1450rpm pumps are designed to be self priming and will draw their own water if fi tt ed with a suit-able fi lter. Petrol and diesel powered machines will all have an intermediate reducti on gearbox which allows the engine to rev to 2900rpm but the pump sti ll revs at 1450rpm.

So what category do Demon products fall into?

The answer to that questi on is fi rmly in the professional category. All our machines meet and exceed the defi niti on of pro-fessional machines. All have 1450rpm pumps, brass heads, sucti on fi lters, gearboxes, steel reinforced hoses, steel lances, steel chassis and top brand engines.

Demon products are 100% crankshaft pumps because they are simply bett er than wobble plate pumps. At Demon we be-lieve in going the extra mile to make our product range stand out from the good. Excellence comes as standard with every Demon. We lead where others merely follow.

I don’t need a professional machine, what can you off er?

We also sell the Kranzle range which off ers value for money but at a more aff ordable price. Ask for the Kranzle catalogue and you will see a range of pressure washers that off er outstanding value for money.

There are two main types of pump, wob-ble plate on the left and crankshaft on the right. Wobble plate pumps push the piston forward and a spring returns it. As pressure increases the fl ow will drop slightly. This allows for distorted perform-ance claims. Crankshaft pumps deliver the same fl ow regardless of pressure and will oft en feel more powerful that a wobble plate pump.

So you want to buy an electric cold water pressure washer?

What should you consider and why?

I am a homeowner who want’s to clean paths, pati o’s and my car.

If this is all you need it for and only expect to use the pressure washer for ½ hour once or twice a week then there is a large choice available from the large DIY chains that will fi ll your needs. Beware though, if you need these repairing or spare parts they are generally not available and they will mostly end up in a skip. If however, you want bett er value for money and more power to do the cleaning more effi ciently then look at the Kranzle range. We back this product range with off the shelf spares and the knowledge to repair them should you get a problem.

I am a small business who needs to keep a van and a couple of cars clean.

You could consider most of the Kranzle range from the 1150 through to the 145T as suitable, obviously the 1450rpm ma-chines will have a longer life or you could consider the Storm 1. Although this is a more expensive initi al purchase the quality is bett er and repair bill down the years will be smaller. We have some Storm 1 models working hard with hire companies that are over 10 years old, testi mony to the build strength and the use of a crankshaft pump.

I am an industrial user who needs to clean the workplace regularly.

You need a Storm 1! This machine with it’s crankshaft pump will work all day every day and if you fi t special seals to the pump you can even pump hot water from a ring main as high as 80°C without damage to the pump.

What do I need to know about petrol or diesel pressure washers?There are three main classes of petrol or diesel pressure washers:

1. Hobby - usually petrol driven, up to 5hp and use a verti cal crankshaft engine, like a lawnmower, and have a small wobble plate pump hung underneath the engine. Like your lawnmower these are designed to be used occasionally for short periods of ti me. They won’t suck their own water either.

2. Budget priced - look the same as professional equipment but all the corners have been cut. You can identi fy this type of pressure washer, as it will have no reducti on gearbox between the pump and engine. Reducti on gearboxes are expensive but allow the pump to turn much slower. This means that the pump is not designed to suck its own water. It may do when new for a few months but it is primarily designed to be fed from a hosepipe. Check with your water supplier to see if this is permitt ed. (Most do not)

3. Industrial - what you need if you earn a living from pressure washing, or use pressure washers for long periods of ti me. Characterised by having a reducti on gearbox which allows good sucti on and top of the range engines, designed to last, with quality fi lters and fi tti ngs.

Petrol or Diesel Power?

This is a straight cost issue. Petrol powered is cheaper to buy but more expensive to run. Diesel powered will last longer than a petrol driven pressure washer. If you buy fuel at a fuel stati on, then petrol is about 5% to10% cheaper than diesel, a diesel engine will use 10% to 20% less fuel to achieve the same work, then there is litt le cost diff erence to pay back the increased price of the diesel pressure washer.

However, if you buy your fuel from a fuel distributor and get agricultural diesel, it only costs about 25% of the cost ofroad fuel. When you use red diesel and you use your pressure washer for 50 litres worth, or four hours per day,fi ve days per week, for 48 weeks of the year, then your savings will be approximately £1500, at February 03 fuel prices.

The amount saved is more than the diff erence of the purchase price in the fi rst place. If you only use your pressure washer for one or two hours per week, the added cost of investi ng in diesel power, would not provide enough savings, to pay back the added cost of the investment.

EMIS®Complete Graffi ti Removal System

Designed to accurately dispense the new range of fi ne grade blast media such as Armex® to improve cleaning of diffi cult surfaces or where more agres-sive cleaning is required.

The EMIS® has a simple two valve control system. The valve from the hopper is partly opened to restrict the amount of media that is allowed to fall into the lower mixing chamber. The second valve controls the amount of vacuum in the pipe which in turn contols the amount of media sent to the blast nozzle.

Chewing Gum Removal Tool

Used with cold water at a pressure of 200 bar and 15 litres per minute the 18 ceramic micro jets grips gum and peels it off the fl oor. Although designed to work with cold water, hot water speeds up the removal process but is not a necessity.

Simple to use and effective in the fi ght against street litt er, the operator wheels the tool to the gum deposit as pulls the trigger. The 18 microjets peel away the gum in seconds. The wheels mean that all day operati on is possible with minimum operator fati gue.

Graffi ti Remover Gel - suitable for removal of graffi ti from most surfaces, including brick, stone and concrete PC Safe Graffi ti Remover - Removal of graffi ti from plasti c and polycarbonate surfaces such as bus shelters and street furniture. 28DEMOCLEAN GRAFFITI REMOVERSDemoclean graffi ti gel is used as a pre-treatment on areas of graffi ti , it helps to soft en and break down the graffi ti before using Armex through our EMIS for thorough cleaning. We have a complete range of graffi ti removers that work on most surfaces.

Due to the jet design it is possible to remove gum from tarmac sur-faces with only a minimal amout of damage to the substrate.

The design of the chewing gum tool protects the 18 ceramic noz-zles from damage as dropping the nozzle onto a hard surface could result in breakage of the microjet’s surface leading to less effective removal of the gum.

Demo

You need hot water and chemical to completely remove oil and grease and to prevent the oil and grease from reform-ing elsewhere on whatever you are cleaning. The hot water melts the oil or grease and the chemical emulsifi es the oil or grease so that it can be eff ecti vely rinsed away.

But I can remove oil and grease with my cold wash and chemical can’t I?

No, you can spread it around a bit and some will wash off but you will never remove the microscopic fi lm of oil left behind unless you wash it with hot water and chemical.

I have heard that you can pump hot water through a cold water pressure washer - I could do that rather than buy a hot water pressure washer can’t I?

Some pressure washers can do this, the Kranzle range of cold water pressure washers and our Demon range can happily pump hot water, provided it is pressure fed into the pump and it is below 60°C. This is bett er than cold water but not the same as a hot water pressure washer. It is also true that the Demon Storm 1 and 2 can have modifi ed seals fi tt ed to enable water to 80°C to be used. We have made a number of these modifi ed pumps and they are working reliably with the customers who bought them. With a hot water pressure washer cold water only fl ows through the pump. It is then heated by a very hot fl ame burning either diesel or kerosene via a heati ng coil to heat the water. This water leaves the machine at about 90°C to 95°C.

But I have got a “Steam Cleaner” which does 150°C - yours can’t match that sort of performance can it?

This is a popular misconcepti on. All hot water pressure washers use similar heati ng systems and burn similar amounts of fuel, through similar heati ng coils. We all get similar temperatures of hot water at the lance. The only way that you can increase the heat of the water, is to reduce the amount of water cooling the heati ng coil, by opening the “steam valve.” Most hot water pressure washers pump between 10 and 13 litres per minute, and burn about 1.5US gallons of fuel, so by reducing the water fl ow through the coil the operator see’s his “steam cleaner” in acti on. Using physics however, it is not possible for the water leaving the nozzle, to have a temperature in excess of 100°C. What you are seeing is very hot water, turning to a vapour and evaporati ng, causing people to believe that pure steam is coming out of the nozzle. There are no improvements in cleaning power, over water at a lower temperature, the extra heat merely evaporates the water quicker. All you have is a cloud of steam to fog up your safety glasses and you won’t be able to see a thing!

Should I burn diesel or kerosene in my machine?

Defi nitely kerosene because it is a fuel refi ned by the petrol companies to be burnt in a pressure jet burner. Red and white diesel, although they will both work adequately, without adjustment to a Demon machine, are primarily refi ned for use in diesel (compression igniti on) engines. The main advantage that kerosene has over diesel is that it is a thinner fuel than diesel. What this means to you, is that the water vapour in the air around the hot water pressure washer will get into the fuel tank, you will never stop it. With kerosene in the tank the water is far heavier and drops to the bott om of the tank, where you can see it, and you can drain the tank when the water content reaches an unacceptable level. With diesel being a heavier fuel the water, does not drop out as readily and mixes, due to more similar weights of the fuel and water, consequently it is pumped into the burner. Water blocks the paper fuel element and takes parti cles of dirt with it, which wears the fuel nozzle quickly, leading to poor atomisati on of the fuel, incomplete combusti on, damage to the boiler, intermitt ent igniti on and large repair bills. If you use kerosene it will cost you less in service and repair bills!

But where do you get kerosene from?

All fuel distributors sell kerosene in bulk. Invest in a 1200 litre tank and save money. It costs the same as red diesel but a fracti on of the cost of white diesel and will save extra service costs and on repair bills over the years. Need a tank? Demon can supply a bunded lockable tank with a semi-rotary pump to dispense the fuel - no problem.

Car Wash Pressure Washers

Most pressure washers are built in a frame to be easily moved around but this is not always required. Recently a car wash service required two pressure washers with the spec of the Storm 1 as they wanted to store them in a container on site. We adapted them to be placed on a plate with carry handles to move when required and longer power switches for outside of the container.

High Pressure V Twin Engine

This Tornado Bowser is manufactured with a Honda V Twin engine and built following a demand for a high pressure machine with its own water supply. This machine has a spec of 24 HP, 21 litres per minute. Demon have availability of these types of engines ranging from 3500-4000psi. While the idea for ARMEX® started with just plain baking soda, as the world’s leader in bicarbonate technology ARM & HAMMER® formulated more than a dozen unique medias to specially meet industry surface preparati on requirements. ARMEX Cleaning and Coati ng Removal Systems have become an eff ecti ve, economical and environmentally superior method for cleaning, depainti ng and degreasing across the country, and around the world.

Why Baking Soda?

It is granular - suitable for use in pressure pots, cabinet systems and as an additi ve for pressure washer systems. It is sharp - baking soda crystals delivered under relati vely low pressure but at high velocity will scour virtually any coati ng from any substrate.It is friable - meaning it fractures into smaller parti cles intensifying the cleaning acti on while soft ening the impact on substrates.It is relati vely soft - with a Moh’s hardness of 2.5, it will not damage most substrates. (Always test a small area fi rst)It is benign pH of 8.2 - provides a superior worker and environmental profi le, before, during, and aft er use.It is water soluble - dissolves in water for easier disposal and can even be washed down the sewer.

ARMEX® is not just baking soda. It is a specially formulated sodium bicarbonate.

ARMEX® comes in 3 diff erent parti cle sizes, simply put small, medium and large.

The largest parti cle is about 280 microns and is used in all ARMEX® formulas that have “XL” in the name as in extra large; Maintenance XL, Maintenance XL with SupraKleen, HydroFlex XL, Flow XL and Profi le XL. This large parti cle is excellent for coati ngs removal and heavy cleaning applicati ons.

The next medium sized parti cle, is about 180 microns and is found in Maintenance Formula, Maintenance Formula with Suprakleen, and Flow M.

The smallest parti cles about 60 microns are found in Anilox Roll Cleaning Formula, Electronics, Composite, and Turbine Formulas.

MOISTURE GUARD One of two types of fl ow aids are used in ARMEX® formulati ons. Most contain MoistureGuard™ 2 which makes the media about two ti mes more resistant to moisture than regular baking soda or other baking soda abrasives. Our advanced fl ow aid MoistureGuard™ 8 makes the media 8 ti mes more resistant to moisture than regular baking soda or other baking soda abrasives. These fl ow aids are very important in a blasti ng operati on to ensure that the media is running conti nuously and consistently through the orifi ce to the nozzle. Because the blast equipment runs on compressed air, clumping and clogging of media is a primary concern for blasti ng operati ons parti cularly when working in high humidity environments.

FLOW FORMULASFlow formulas contain MoistureGuard™ 8 and are the products to use in high humidity areas, where compressed air may be wett er than usual and cause clumping and clogging of the media. While fl ow formulas can remain dry even in water, following blasti ng the moisture resistant barrier is broken and the waste media is fully water soluble.

Hose reels prolong the life of your hose

Retractable Hose Reel A spring loaded and can accept 15 or 30m depending on the model, of 3/8” bore high pressure hose. They come complete with brackets which bolts to a suitable wall.
