Popular belief about Lucifer Many Christians believe that back

around the beginning of time, the devil was once named Lucifer. Lucifer was created by God, and was once a perfect and beautiful cherub or angel. He was created to serve and worship God, but he was created with the ability to have freedom of choice. Lucifer chose to serve himself instead of God. His heart became filled with pride because of his beauty, and he became rebellious (disobedient) against God. He believed he could be like God the most High. God then cast Lucifer out of heaven because of his sin…and he then set about tempting humanity to sin..

Close examination of Lucifer Lucifer is a Latin word

meaning “light-bearing” Most translations do

not use this word as it is ‘Latin’

The correct translation is “Day Star”

4

Morning Star - Venus Venus reaches its

maximum brightness shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset, for which reason it is often called the Morning Star or the Evening Star.

Page 5: Demystifying Lucifer

5

Morning Star - Venus Venus is always brighter than

any star (apart from the Sun). The orbit of Venus is inside

the orbit of Earth Venus "overtakes" the Earth

every 584 days as it orbits the Sun. As it does so, it changes from the

"Evening Star", visible after sunset, to the "Morning Star", visible before sunrise.

Page 6: Demystifying Lucifer

6

Evening Star The orbit of Venus is inside

the orbit of Earth. When Venus is on one side of

the Sun, it's trailing the Sun in the sky and brightens into view shortly after the Sun sets, when the sky is dark enough for it to be visible. When Venus is at its brightest, it becomes visible just minutes after the Sun goes down.

This is when Venus is seen as the Evening Star.

Page 7: Demystifying Lucifer

7

Morning Star – Announcing the arrival of Light

When Venus is on the other side of the Sun, it leads the Sun as it travels across the sky.

Venus will rise in the morning a few hours before the Sun.

Then as the Sun rises, the sky brightens and Venus fades away in the daytime sky.

This is Venus the Morning Star.

Significance of 'stars' in scriptures

The star was the ancient emblem of sovereignty I see him, but not now; I behold

him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth. [Numbers 24:17]

saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." [Matthew 2:2]

Significance of stars in scriptures

It is well known that sun, moon, and stars are emblems, in prophetic language, of rulers & kingdoms.

Stars represent lesser powers: And God made the two great lights--

the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night--and the stars. [Genesis 1:16]

Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, "Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me." [Genesis 37:9]

Page 10: Demystifying Lucifer

10

Stars represent lesser powers Then sang Deborah and Barak:

Jdg 5:2 "That the leaders took the lead in Israel, that the people offered themselves willingly, bless the LORD! ... Jdg 5:9 My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel who offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless the LORD. ... Jdg 5:14 From Ephraim their root they marched down into the valley, following you, Benjamin, with your kinsmen; from Machir marched down the commanders, and from Zebulun those who bear the lieutenant's staff; ... Jdg 5:15 the princes of Issachar came with Deborah, .. Jdg 5:20 From heaven the stars fought, from their courses they fought against Sisera.

The leaders who faught the battles are called stars

Stars represent lesser powers: Isa 13:1 The oracle concerning Babylon

which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw. Isa 13:9 Behold, the day of the LORD comes,

cruel, with wrath and fierce anger, to make the land a desolation and to destroy its sinners from it.

Isa 13:10 For the stars of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light; the sun will be dark at its rising, and the moon will not shed its light.

Isa 13:11 I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless.

Stars --> Powers in Egypt: Eze 32:2 "Son of man, raise a lamentation over

Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him: "You consider yourself a lion of the nations, but you are like a dragon in the seas; you burst forth in your rivers, trouble the waters with your feet, and foul their rivers.

Eze 32:7 When I blot you out, I will cover the heavens and make their stars dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give its light.

Eze 32:8 All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over you, and put darkness on your land, declares the Lord GOD.

Eze 32:9 "I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries that you have not known.

Jesus is A morning star as the morning star ushers in

the sun, so Jesus ushers the eternal glories

of the everlasting kingdom. "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to

testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star." [Revelation 22:16]

The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. [John 1:9]

Jesus is A morning star 2Pe 1:19 And we have

something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,

2Co 4:6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Background - The oracle concerning Babylon

Isa 13:1 The oracle concerning Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.

Isa 13:14 And like a hunted gazelle, or like sheep with none to gather them, each will turn to his own people, and each will flee to his own land.

Isa 13:16 Their infants will be dashed in pieces before their eyes; their houses will be plundered and their wives ravished.

Page 19: Demystifying Lucifer

19

The prediction of destruction Isa 13:17 Behold, I am stirring up

the Medes against them, who have no regard for silver and do not delight in gold.

Isa 13:18 Their bows will slaughter the young men; they will have no mercy on the fruit of the womb; their eyes will not pity children.

Isa 13:19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the splendor and pomp of the Chaldeans, will be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them.

Page 20: Demystifying Lucifer

Taunt against the king of Babylon – Ch 14 Isa 14:1 For the LORD

will have compassion on Jacob and will again choose Israel, and will set them in their own land,

Isa 14:4 you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon: "How the oppressor has ceased, the insolent fury ceased!

Taunting poetry Isa 14:9 Sheol beneath is stirred

up to meet you when you come; it rouses the shades to greet you, all who were leaders of the earth; it raises from their thrones all who were kings of the nations.

Isa 14:10 All of them will answer and say to you: 'You too have become as weak as we! You have become like us!'

Isa 14:11 Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, the sound of your harps; maggots are laid as a bed beneath you, and worms are your covers.

Eze 32:2 "Son of man, raise a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him

Eze 32:18 "Son of man, wail over the multitude of Egypt, and send them down, her and the daughters of majestic nations, to the world below, to those who have gone down to the pit:

Eze 32:21 The mighty chiefs shall speak of them, with their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: 'They have come down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.'

Taunting poetry Isa 34:2,3,4 For the LORD is

enraged against all the nations, and furious against all their host; he has devoted them to destruction, has given them over for slaughter. Their slain shall be cast out, and the stench of their corpses shall rise; the mountains shall flow with their blood. All the host of heaven shall rot away, and the skies roll up like a scroll. All their host shall fall, as leaves fall from the vine, like leaves falling from the fig tree.

Isa 14:12 "How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low!

rejoice at you, the cedars of Lebanon, saying, 'Since you were laid low, no woodcutter comes up against us.

Zec 11:2 Wail, O cypress, for the cedar has fallen, for the glorious trees are ruined! Wail, oaks of Bashan, for the thick forest has been felled!

The cedars and cypresses of Lebanon and the oaks of Bashan are simply figures denoting what is lofty, glorious, and powerful in the world of nature and humanity, and are only to be referred to persons so far as their lofty position in the state is concerned

if even the cedars (the highest in the state) are not spared, how much less the fir trees (the lowest)!

Eze 31:3 Behold, Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful branches and forest shade, and of towering height, its top among the clouds.

Symbolic language common in Bible

“Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth!” (Isaiah 1:2).

Is the prophet raising his voice to the clouds, addressing them as though they would be capable of hearing and responding ?

He explains: “Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers... give ear unto the law of our God, ye people” (v. 10).

Why is the king of Babylon referred as the Day star

How can Christ and the king of Babylon be referred as Lucifer or

daystar?

Page 28: Demystifying Lucifer

28

The role of Babylon in God’s plan – “King of Kings and the Day star”

Isa 13:19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the splendor and pomp of the Chaldeans,

Dan 2:37 You, O king, the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory,

Dan 2:38 and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell, the children of man, the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, making you rule over them all--you are the head of gold.

Page 29: Demystifying Lucifer

29

The role of Babylon in God’s plan – “My hammer”

Jer 25:8,9 "Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: Because you have not obeyed my words,

behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the LORD, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation.

Jer 51:7 Babylon was a golden cup in the LORD's hand, making all the earth drunken; the nations drank of her wine; therefore the nations went mad.

Jer 51:20 "You are my hammer and weapon of war: with you I break nations in pieces; with you I destroy kingdoms;

Babylon and its king could not see it was GOD who made him King of Kings. But they declared in the pride of their heart it was their OWN doing!

Page 30: Demystifying Lucifer

30

The role of Babylon in God’s plan – “God rules in the kingdom of men”

Dan 5:21 He was driven from among the children of mankind, and his mind was made like that of a beast, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. He was fed grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, until he knew that the Most High God rules the kingdom of mankind and sets over it whom he will.

Dan 5:22 And you his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,

Jer 25:12 Then after seventy years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the LORD, making the land an everlasting waste.

Page 31: Demystifying Lucifer

31

The role of Babylon in God’s plan – “God rules in the kingdom of men”

God used Babylon as his disciplinary rod.

He destroyed many nations and God’s temple – but God allowed this To discipline his chosen people To judge the wicked and proud

nations

God “allowed” it to happen and eventually Babylon was also judged for his wickedness

Jer 51:11 "Sharpen the arrows! Take up the shields! The LORD has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes, because his purpose concerning Babylon is to destroy it, for that is the vengeance of the LORD, the vengeance for his temple.

Jer 46:25, 26 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, said: "Behold, I am bringing punishment upon Amon of Thebes, and Pharaoh and Egypt and her gods and her kings, upon Pharaoh and those who trust in him. I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their life, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers.

Earth Actually Lucifer does not

even occur in the bible This study tried to show

popular teachings of Lucifer is a MYTH!

Translation of לֵליֵה as "Lucifer", as in the King James Version, has been abandoned in modern English translations of Isaiah 14:12. Present-day translations have "morning star" (New International Version, New Century Version, New American Standard Bible, Good News Translation, Holman Christian Standard Bible, Contemporary English Version, Common English Bible, Complete Jewish Bible), "daystar" (New Jerusalem Bible, English Standard Version, The Message), "shining one" (New Life Version) or "shining star" (New Living Translation).

Page 33: Demystifying Lucifer

33

Summary FALL OF Lucifer or daystar is

just a figure of speech for FALL of the king of babylon Isa 14:22 "I will rise up against

them," declares the LORD of hosts, "and will cut off from Babylon name and remnant, descendants and posterity," says the LORD.

Babylon was referred to as the golden city, so appropriately it was represented by the head of gold in the image. Babylon ruled the world from 606 - 538 B.C. Nebuchadnezzar had planned that his kingdom would last forever, but God gave this dream to show this would not be so. Babylon would dominate only the early portion of human affairs.

Is king of Tyre Lucifer?

Eze 28:14 You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God;

in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.

Understanding bible language Context

Eze 28:12 "Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord

Eze 28:13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; How could the king of Tyre be in the

garden of Eden?

Page 36: Demystifying Lucifer

36

Understanding bible language – “Eden” Eze 31:3 Behold,

Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon, with beautiful branches and forest shade, and of towering height, its top among the clouds.

Eze 31:8 The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it, nor the fir trees equal its boughs; neither were the plane trees like its branches; no tree in the garden of God was its equal in beauty.

Eze 31:9 I made it beautiful in the mass of its branches, and all the trees of Eden envied it, that were in the garden of God.

How can the trees in the garden of Eden “envy” a cedar in Lebanon?

Page 37: Demystifying Lucifer

37

Understanding bible language – ‘trees of Eden envied it’ Eze 31:8 The cedars

in the garden of God could not rival it,

The greatest kings in the whole world could not rival Assyria at the time

Assyria was the greatest kingdom

Even the kingdom of God (“Judah/Israel”) had no power like Assyria

Eze 31:8 nor the fir trees equal its boughs;

Lesser kings and princes are comparable to fir trees

Page 38: Demystifying Lucifer

38

Understanding bible language – ‘Eden’

Eden does not mean the literal paradise of God in which Adam and Eve lived

Eden in Ezekiel’s prophecies is used to “symbolize” a perfect place or kingdom on earth

Also from the prophecy writings it is clear that even the most perfect and beautiful places “Eden” on earth will end

Eze 31:18 "Whom are you thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? You shall be brought down with the trees of Eden to the world below. You shall lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword. "This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD."

Prince of Tyre v/s Nebuchadnezzar Eze 28:2 "Son of man,

say to the prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord GOD: "Because your heart is proud, and you have said, 'I am a god, I sit in the seat of the gods, in the heart of the seas,' yet you are but a man, and no god, though you make your heart like the heart of a god--

Dan 3:5 that when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, you are to fall down and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.

Dan 5:21 the Most High God rules the kingdom of mankind and sets over it whom he will.

“Anointed” “that covers” In allusion to the “glory

of the cherubim” over the mercy seat

Eze 28:4 With your wisdom and with your understanding

Eze 28:5 By your great wisdom and by your trade you have multiplied your riches,

God claims he chose the King of Tyre to prosper and endowed him with wisdom

Who trades? Fallen angel or Tyre

What Riches?

Perfect in your ways Eze 28:15 You were

perfect in your way. Implying that he was a

PERFECT king

“until iniquity was found in you” His wealth was his

downfall that led to violence and pride

Eze 28:5 your heart is lifted up because of your riches.

His iniquity like that of Belshazzar who did not acknowledge God for his great position

He like many of us think our action are responsible for our great wealth Eze 28:6 Therefore thus

saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God;

Page 42: Demystifying Lucifer

42

How could Tyre have known about the God of Israel? King David and

Solomon had positive influence on the kings of Tyre

Hiram, king of Tyre was very influential in building God’s temple

2Ch 2:5 And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.

1Ki_5:1-11; 1Ki_9:10-11; 2Ch_2:3-16

And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with me. Behold, I build an house to the name of the LORD my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the LORD our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel. [2 Chronicles 2:3-4]

Page 43: Demystifying Lucifer

43

Tyre had a relationship / covenant with Israel?

Amo 1:9 The LORD said: I will punish Phoenicia for countless crimes, and I won't change my mind. They broke their treaty and dragged off my people from town after town to sell them as slaves to the Edomites.

2Ch 2:12 Hiram also said, "Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who made heaven and earth, who has given King David a wise son, who has discretion and understanding, who will build a temple for the LORD and a royal palace for himself.

Tyre was a ally of Israel since David’s time

They were to be a guardian to Israel and God allowed them to prosper.

Once they became rich they had no respect for the true God of Israel and declared themselves as God and did wicked things

The friendly relations between Tyre and Israel (Solomon supplying grain and oil in return for Hiram's timber, metals, and workmen) were again renewed when Ahab married the Sidonian king Ethbaal's (or Ithobal king of Tyre, according to Menander, in Josephus Ant. 8:13, section 2) daughter.

Eze 28:5 by your great wisdom in your trade you have increased your wealth,

The commerce of the whole world was gathered into the warehouses of Tyre. “Tyrian merchants were the first who ventured to navigate the Mediterranean waters; and they founded their colonies on the coasts and neighbouring islands of the Aegean Sea, in Greece, on the northern coast of Africa, at Carthage and other places, in Sicily and Corsica, in Spain at Tartessus, and even beyond the pillars of Hercules at Gadeira

46

The fate of Lucifer Popular beliefs have it that

Lucifer was cast onto the earth (punished) to torment man (seems like a reward!)

But in v18 we are told that he was “destroyed” by fire and turned to “ashes”

So if you 'believe' in a Mr. Lucifer he was burned to ashes and does no longer exist "in the sight of all"

Eze 28:18 By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your trade you profaned your sanctuaries; so I brought fire out from your midst; it consumed you, and I turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all who saw you.

The fate of Tyre Alexander of Macedonia

occupies Damascus and, after a siege lasting seven months, destroys Tyre during which there is great carnage and the sale of the women and children into slavery.

Alexander ordered all but those who had fled to the temples to be put to death and the buildings to be set on fire.

Eze 28:18 By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your trade you profaned your sanctuaries; so I brought fire out from your midst; it consumed you, and I turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all who saw you.

Amo 1:10 So I will send a fire upon the wall of Tyre, and it shall devour her strongholds."

Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings.
