DENGUE
WHAT IS DENGUE?
Dengue is a viral disease spread by the mosquito
TYPES OF DENGUE
It occurs in 3 forms:
Dengue Fever
Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever
Dengue Shock Syndrome
Dengue Fever is a severe,
flu-like illness
Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever,
a more severe form of the
disease, may be fatal
A person suspected of having Dengue must see a doctor at once
DENGUE TRANSMISSION
Dengue is transmitted by the infective bite of the
Aedes aegypti mosquito
The Aedes aegypti mosquito can
spread Dengue, Yellow fever,
Chikungunya and Zika fever
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes most
commonly feed at dusk and dawn,
indoors, in shady areas
Man develops the disease after
5-6 days of being bitten by an
infective mosquito
DENGUE TRANSMISSION
SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE FEVER
1. Sudden, high fever
2. Severe headaches
SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE FEVER
3. Pain behind the eyes
4. Joint &
muscle pain
SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE FEVER
5. Nausea
6. Vomiting
SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE FEVER
7. Skin rash
8. Mild bleeding
Person with Dengue becomes
infective to mosquitoes 6 to 12 hours
before the onset of the disease and
remains so up to 3 to 5 days.
Dengue CANNOT spread from person
to person without the vector
-the mosquito!
Laboratory Investigations can confirm the diagnosis of Dengue
DENGUE - TREATMENT
No drug or vaccine
is available for the
treatment of Dengue
Because dengue is caused by a
virus, there is no specific
medicine or antibiotic to treat it
Dengue management is purely concerned with relief of symptoms (symptomatic). Rest and fluid intake for adequate hydration is important.
DENGUE
Management
A platelet transfusion is
indicated in rare cases if the
platelet level drops significantly
or if there is significant bleeding.
PREVENTION
of
DENGUE
Remove water from coolers and
other small containers at least
once in a week
Use mosquito nets
Use mosquito repellents
especially during day time
Do not wear clothes that
expose arms and legs
The control of Aedes aegypti
mosquito is the only way
