I hope you have had a sound year of trading and control of overheads. We had a year of consolidation amid excellent sales of print books out of bookshops as well as the continued growth of sales of digital books.
Our continued positioning as the Australian book distributor seems to be the right positioning for the business as predominantly our content is not easily procured via overseas online businesses. And our books are not underpinned by the discount chains. The reality is that we seem to have book promotion launches and media everyday across Australia. Then again that has some communication demands – I look at our website almost daily to find out about the extent of the media.
I sent the reply back to the Publishers Association about Titlepage (TP). It won’t happen under the current constraints the owners of TP place over that search engine. As a business we could become members of that association if it allowed (as a consequence) our publishers get a free pass under our umbrella. But that is not the case.
Reader's Digest start with us this month as did Hinkler last month. I don’t believe either are members of the Publishers Association and I don’t wish to have to ask them to join that organisation for the purpose of TP listing. A contrary view would be to muster the non TP distributors and engage in another “industry” P&A database for those bookshops who don’t use distributors' sites. There are not many independent book distributors in Australia – I can count four others. If we did this it would be likely to have conjoined P&A from two overseas wholesalers as well. Interesting?
This week saw the departure of Martin Shaw from Readings Carlton. A farewell saw trade luminaries such as Henry from Scribe, Peter (ex MD of Wiley), and a host of others in attendance. Both Henry and Peter represent such rich and complex histories as they have contributed so much to the quality of the industry. Martin Shaw has been publicly acknowledged as a gate keeper and a person of profound engagement with books and authors to the benefit of readers. A function of size allows people like Martin to grow into a role which has had great benefit to his employer and again to the readers and authors who came under his stewardship.
I do remember one presentation to a group where Martin was present with a proposed book jacket which I had approved; it only took a look and some brief words from Martin to have me out of the room, onto the publisher and have the whole jacket redesigned overnight. Good luck to Martin in his next book role overseas. We all have people like Martin in our businesses who are our link people – where would we be without them?
The BEA / IDPF was again most helpful this year in terms of my continued belief in the globalisation of the book business. I recently wrote to Bill McCoy (Executive Director of IDPF) saying we were not destined to the Smithsonian of Digital Content because of our constant relationship with change and opportunity.
I have hopes we can properly make the “Solomon’s Noose” (Melbourne Books) available to the UK trade based on using the Print on Demand services of Lightning Source. We should have both paperback and jacketed hardback for the stores when author Steve Harris makes his promotional visit to Oxford shops in October this year. I have to say that reading Steve’s book made me think of the time I discovered Watkin Tench’s 1788 some years ago. Thank you to Petrarchs in Launceston for their opening order for this book.
Our second half books are amazing. For financial purposes I have to put a budget in to provide some reality to business ownership and it looks like our top books will create a higher level of sales than we achieved in the same period in 2014.
The biggest will be a November release “The Seekers Singing Just for You". This is written with the full cooperation of the members of that group and will be a book for 10’s of thousands of Australian readers.
On a closing note we welcome Andrew Farrell to the ownership group of the company. Andrew has bought a level of intellect and applied skills that has lifted the whole structure and ambit of the venture. Thank you Andrew.
As always, “read plenty and sell more”.

Money & Mindfulness
DO YOU HAVE BIG DREAMS AND BIG PLANS, BUT LACK THE RESOURCES TO PURSUE THEM? DO YOU FIND YOURSELF SAYING “IF ONLY I HAD THE MONEY…” ARE YOU TOO EMBARRASSED TO ASK OTHERS FOR HELP?
In her best‐selling book Daring & Disruptive and its sequel Life & Love, serial entrepreneur Lisa Messenger shared the business insights gathered in more than a decade of success across multiple industries, including how to identify your true purpose, pinpoint your passions and create the working life most only dream of. But, let’s be honest, you need the means to make it all happen. In her latest book, she tackles a topic with a stigma – money! What would you do if money was no object, how can anyone find profit in the impossible and – her personal bugbear ‐ when will “gunnas” stop using lack of money as an excuse for not stepping out of their comfort zone and pursuing their purpose?Mixing advice from mentors, experts and famous role models, with lessons learned in her own entrepreneurial journey, Lisa reveals how she built a global brand, and launched a magazine sold in 37 countries, without having to borrow a single cent from a bank. This is from a woman who, years before, could barely afford to buy toothpaste. In the self‐deprecating manner that has become her trademark style, Lisa shares her own journey, clearly stating she is not a guru when it comes to finances, but has used fresh thinking and creative ideas to fuel a burgeoning business. She will help you appreciate your real value,

Surviving cerebral catastrophe: a tale of the mind, mortality and modern medicine
On a trip to visit Pintubi friends in the remote western desert of central Australia, GP Dr Bill Williams wakes to a nightmare. Gisela, his wife, is felled by a thunderclap headache. What are the possibilities - migraine? neuralgia? or a burst blood vessel in her brain. They are 1500 kilometres from the nearest brain surgeon. Bill has to move fast, really fast.
Will the injury to memory, identity, language and consciousness be profound? Just how plastic is the human brain? Can it really be rewired? Bleed is a rollercoaster ride from dry riverbed to flying doctor, surgeon's knife to intensive care ward and way beyond.
Bill Williams explores the origins and challenges of scientific medicine in a gripping story of narrowly averted tragedy and miraculous endurance, a celebration of human ingenuity and love.

Author
What is the nature of human love? Burt enters his office one day to find a large handwritten folder marked "CONFIDENTIAL". The unexpected package has come from an old university mate: a charming, successful, and well‐loved Australian man named Ted Harris. Twenty‐five years post‐university, Ted seems to have it all: a partnership in a successful law firm, respect, wealth, and the perfect wife. However, as Burt delves deeper into these documents ‐ which turns out to be an intensely personal confessional ‐ he discovers that things are not what they seem, and that Ted harbours a dark and mysterious past relating to his first wife, peculiar Swiss biochemist Yvonne. In The Other Wife, Manfred Jurgensen uses his unique writing style and several narrative voices to examine the internal conflicts of disease, our responsibility for those we care for, and the very nature of this undefinable thing we call love.
The seemingly contradictory senses of menace and sensitivity exist in an uneasy ease in Manfred Jurgensen's writing. ‐Lily Brett
...complex and confident, ambitious, yet always assured as it explores our solitariness in the midst of social life. ‐The Canberra Times

There is a long and ancient historical legacy whereby human beings set out to create buildings that embody form, function, utility, beauty and, dare one say, meaning. Buildings tell us a great deal about how we see ourselves, our aspirations, or how we simply need to stop and gaze in wonder at human creativity. The built environment, as it is usually referred to by architects and urban designers, has always been shaped by the basic need for shelter, but also by other forces. Places of work, worship, education, entertainment, health care, buildings in which we commence and end journeys, shrines, monuments, temples are built for a purpose and require no explanation. With over 850 colour, black & white plates, architectural diagrams, and hand‐drawn illustrations, this book provides insights into the use of brick and block masonry in Australian contemporary architecture. As a collection of case studies, essays and technical articles, it explores the creative endeavour of both the individual and the collective. For the architect/designer: consider the achievement of your colleagues, but know that one, single case study or feature is part of a much wider body of work. For those open to ideas and different perspectives: draw inspiration for future projects. For those who inhabit places of learning: discover the inventive and artful in the use of brick and block masonry. For the general reader: this collection is a snapshot of Australian design that deserves recognition.

Serious beachcombing requires time, fitness and agility, a keen eye and a minimum amount of hiking gear to make the expedition enjoyable. For an all‐day hike, a large backpack with the requisite lunch, first aid kit, map, water, mobile, rain coat, pocket knife, etc. will all ensure that your efforts are made easier and that there is ample room to carry any booty which is found en route. For the serious and technically minded semi‐professional beachcomber add a hacksaw, a very sharp knife and even some cable ties to strap on your booty. A PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) can add a measure of safety and even a PFD lightweight yoke is not beyond reason. The more gear I take the more confident I am at going it alone and into remote places.
Herein lies a beachcomber's collection, amassed over many years, of some of the better examples of what the oceans have spat forth on many a desolate shoreline along the coastline of south eastern Australia. With five buoys in my collection having originated from Argentina, I can truly claim to have an international collection courtesy of the mighty Southern Ocean.

Comedy has been a perpetual part of Australian film, in which humour reflects Australia's adaptation in times of crisis, social change and technological advances. This was never more so than in the 1930s, when Australia produced more comedy feature films than in any other decade before 1970. These films of the 1930s embraced the new technology of sound, made local vaudeville performers into movie stars, offered escape from the Depression and revealed a diverse and international Australia. In these films, Australia moves further from Empire and the bush, forges the Digger legend, responds to cultural diversity and views itself as a modern, urban nation. Influenced by Hollywood, Australian comedies of the 1930s adapted international styles to local points of view. Based on research at the National Film and Sound Archive, Lesley Speed's book provides new insight into Australian comedy films of the 1930s and the extraordinary period of social change in which they were produced.

Sustaining a life long career in any part of the film industry anywhere in the world is hard, but sustaining one in the ever shifting realm of creative, independent, socially engaged, intellectually inspired, formally innovative practice in Australia is especially tough.John Cumming's superb book is not only about the prodigious, exploratory, challenging films, videos and TV programs made by John Hughes ‐ an underrated, canny maverick of our national scene; it is also about what it takes to keep moving and changing with the times, how to negotiate with institutions and collaborate with sympathetic minds from other art forms, how to research and teach and theorise on the spot. Only after that concerted effort can a big picture ‐ involving, in Hughes' case, a multi‐media aesthetic of collage design, and a long view of generations, conflicts and transmissions in social history ‐ be discerned. John Cumming elegantly gives us both this collective history and a fine appreciation by one artist of another ‐ both of them forever struggling in and with the conditions, limits and possibilities of their culture.

A Smile for Micky
From the horror of a prison camp on the Thai-Burma railway to a
tender act of remembrance in Hobart, A Smile for Micky is a true tale of friendship, endurance, suffering and tribute. Author, Desmond Jackson, was a prisoner of war for three and a half years under the Japanese. Twenty-five years later, he felt compelled to write about events he witnessed during that terrible time: events that no one there could forget. His fellow prisoner, artist and friend, Jack Chalker, painted the watercolours especially for the book.In his foreword to the book, Cameron Forbes, author of Hellfire: The Story of Australia, Japan and the Prisoners of War, says: "Desmond Jackson is a man of grace and strength, wrote this requiem for Micky Hallam some time ago. The publication of it is to be welcomed. A Smile for Micky is a small gem, beautifully illustrated."Intimately involved as the Medical Officer at the time, Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop said in a letter to the author: "I was deeply interested in your account of that shocking beat-up..."Published posthumously, this is a book with a message that endures from generation to generation: that war is brutal and futile. It epitomizes the cry: Lest We Forget.
A Smile for Micky is a small gem, beautifully illustrated by prisoner of war and artist Jack Chalker. It is an indictment of the behavior of the Japanese and a celebration of Micky Hallam, concluding with a poignant act of remembrance by his mates. ‐ Cameron Forbes

Life is full of choices. In this sequel to A Butterfly Landed An Eagle, D. Elizabeth Laine urges her family, next generation and generations to come, to remain positive. Instead of attributing blame to everything and everyone else, she challenges Christians and non‐Christians alike not to ask why, but, do something about the negative things in their lives. She highly recommends prayer and optimism.
The retired Nurse draws on her personal and spiritual experiences, first book and avid reading, to plead for three‐dimensional‐growth; body, mind and spirit. She hopes all her readers will listen and act. It is one way or the other. Presented boldly, she hopes her sequel inspires many to embrace the new spiritual concept she proposes, and also become…Eagles On The High Way

Author InformationElizabeth (Liz) Laine now D. Elizabeth Laine, is a retired Nurse (RPH, WASON, B.A.Sc. 1998), since 2004. She turned author to help others make informed decisions; when faced with mental illness and family dysfunctions. She writes from a mainly Christian ethos laced with psychology. Her perspective on mental illness has no match for the illness mentioned in the Bible.
Her first book, A Butterfly Landed An Eagle, published in 2010, recorded the mistakes she made. Her hindsight is invaluable as foresight, to protect from and prevent emotional damage; particularly of offspring with a mentally ill parent. The sequel addresses this damage in a psycho-spiritual context. Elizabeth resides in country WA, Australia with her husband.

Fainting with Freedom displays Ouyang Yu’s characteristic wrestlings with absurdity, the quotidian and the pain of history, while maintaining a distinctly different take on what constitutes ‘the self’. The poems shimmer with language-play - through slippages between English and Chinese, a more illuminating existential truth arises. - John Kinsella
‘Why,’ asks Ouyang Yu in this stunning new collection, is fame ‘never associated with failure?’ From the great consensus challenger of our age, Fainting with Freedom skewers all the truisms we have been forced by culture to hold too dear, its language abundant with the honesty, percipience and pith we know to expect from this major writer. - Nicholas Birns, Editor, Antipodes
Ouyang Yu has mellowed but is by no means tamed. Anger has given way to sadness, occasional bitterness, but also acceptance; his linguistic fireworks explode on the page. This collection cements Ouyang’s position as one of Australia’s most innovative poets. - Wenche Ommundsen

Ouyang Yu came to Australia at the age of 35. He has since published 75 books of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, literary translation and criticism in English and Chinese, including his award-winning novel, The Eastern Slope Chronicle (2002); his collection of English poetry, The Kingsbury Tales (2008); his collection of Chinese poetry, Poemnonpoem (2011); his book of creative non-fiction, On the Smell of an Oily Rag: Speaking English, Thinking Chinese and Living Australian (2008); his second novel, The English Class (2010), which won the 2011 New South Wales Premier’s Literary Award, and was shortlisted for a number of other state literary awards; his book of literary criticism, Chinese in Australian Fiction: 1888-1988 (2008); and his translation in Chinese, The Fatal Shore (2014), winner of the Translation Prize by the Australia-China Council in 2014.Ouyang is now professor of English and the Siyuan Scholar at Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, China.

Author
Heart Starter is John Tranter's twenty‐fourth book of poems. It is made up of three parts: some poems related to The Best of the Best American Poetry 2013, some poems related to The Open Door: One Hundred Poems, One Hundred Years of 'Poetry' Magazine, and thirty or so poems, mainly rhymed sonnets, written by Tranter in recent years. In the case of the first two parts, the author started with loose drafts which borrowed the end‐words of each line of some poems in each of the two books concerned. The poems engage in a typically oblique way with North American poetic culture, and with the world of poetry in general, and sometimes speak harshly about the nature of 'poetic insight'. The formal poems towards the end of the book take a bleak and sometimes humorous look at the contemporary world.
Author InformationJohn Ernest Tranter is an Australian poet, publisher and editor. He has published more than twenty books of poetry; devising, with Jan Garrett, the long running ABC radio program Books and Writing; and founding in 1997 the internet quarterly literary magazine Jacket which he published and edited until 2010, when he gave it to the University of Pennsylvania.
The Australia Council awarded him a Creative Arts Fellowship in 1990; some Australian poets "acknowledge his role as innovator and experimentalist"

Ground is a meditation on the evolution and nature of Australian spaces. The collection is governed by the tensions which characterise Langford’s work: between the way our spaces are projections of enlargement narratives, and the need to resist them by acknowledging the others with whom we interact. Enlargement narratives place the self at the centre of the world, and share an obsession with a point of arrival which is only meaningful in terms of the story from which it has arisen. Against them, Langford proposes the idea of the dance: by which he means any relationship with another in which neither is privileged—which is based on attention and respect, rather than on the relegation of the other in the face of one’s needs. Loosely chronological, the collection begins by locating us within the natural world, and continues with poems about our disjunctive attempts to rationalise the nature of settlement. There are sequences on the nature of Australian silences, on transitional periods in the nation’s interior life and on the cultural layering of our suburbs. One section explores ways in which Australia has been represented, and another explores what Langford nominates as seven of the Sydney seasons. The collection culminates in a title sequence in which our interactions are conceived as dances. Grounded in ideas, this is, nevertheless, a very lyrical poetry.
Profoundly generous and profoundly important poetry… a truly visionary poet.—Andy Kissane
Luminous, full of air and space, wonderfully paced and constructed… a poetry at once tough and musical, a voice assured in its rhythms, a language both exalted and plain, and a mind that can think to the point of revelation within its chosen figures or images.- Judith Beveridge
Here is a poet who convinces us that poetry matters. - Peter Kirkpatrick

Author
Anna Kerdijk Nicholson’s most recent book, Possession, won the Victorian Premier’s Prize for Poetry and the Wesley Michel Wright Prize and was shortlisted for the NSW and the ACT Premiers' Prizes for Poetry. Her first book, The Bundanon Cantos, was mentioned in the Sydney Morning Herald's Best Books of 2003. She was born in Yorkshire (England), emigrating to Australia after studying literature then, as a postgraduate, qualifying as a lawyer. She works as a solicitor in Sydney and has served on the committee of Poets Union Inc and as a director of Australian Poetry.
Everyday Epic is Kerdijk Nicholson's third full‐length collection. It honours the courage of our small C21st selves who battle on—in the face of prejudice, racism, the Intervention, Australia's immigration policy—despite our 'pathetic human‐ness'.
Comments on Kerdijk Nicholson's earlier collections:Skilled ... Writing of poise and flair. Her angles of view are out of the ordinary. - Peter Pierce
Full of sensual awareness and anachronistic leaps of imagery, abundant with things and ideas. - Philip Salom
The Bundanon Cantos is '... a rare and impressive work. - David McCooey

Author
The Ladder is Simon West’s third collection of poetry, and his first in four years. Many earlier preoccupations return—the natural environment, Italian art, the dimensions of place. There is a new focus on worldly and artistic responsibility, and finding that ‘certain poise’ of ‘being in between’. At the collection’s heart are the building blocks of language, along with the more literal ones of Rome, where some of these poems were written during a residency at the Whiting studio in 2012.
Author Information
Simon West lives in Melbourne. He is the author of First Names (Puncher & Wattmann 2006), shortlisted for the NSW Premiers’ Prize and winner of the William Baylebridge Memorial Prize; The Selected Poetry of Guido Cavalcanti (Troubador Publishing, 2009); and The Yellow Gum’s Conversion (Puncher & Wattmann 2011), shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Awards. He is represented in anthologies including Thirty Australian Poets (UQP) and Young Poets: An Australian Anthology (John Leonard Press).

The Hot Plate is an Australian cooking reality television series set to screen on the Nine Network in 2015. The show consists of state-based restaurants with teams travelling the country to dine in and score each other's restaurants. The restaurants will be judged by UK food writer and critic, Tom Parker Bowles and Melbourne restaurateur Scott Pickett. The upcoming cooking show pits six established suburban restaurants against each other all striving for a leg up in the industry — and an extra $100,000 in the bank, Sydney’s Guillaume Brahimi, The French-born chef, will appear as a special guest judge during all elimination episodes.[2]

Born in Melbourne in 1975, Scott appeared to be a talent from an early age and soon began working as an apprentice chef in various South Australian restaurants. Living on his family farm in a little town called Kangarilla, just outside the wine growing region of McLaren Vale, it was here that Scott first discovered his love of raising (and butchering) animals, growing vegetables, making olive oil and understanding the reality of ‘life on the farm’.At the age of 18, Scott entered the Salon Culinaire, at the time Australia’s largest culinary competition, securing three gold and recognition as ‘one to watch’ by Judge Bruno Cerdan. This helped secure Scott a position at restaurant Paul Bocuse with his mentor, Phillipe Mouchel.Scott followed Mouchel to Langton’s Restaurant and Wine Bar and then Brasserie by Phillipe Mouchel, before stints at Melbourne’s three-hatted restaurant Ondine working under Donovan Cooke. Not one to rest on his laurels Scott travelled to Europe to feed his hunger for classical cooking, spending three years in London as Junior Sous Chef to Philip Howard atinternationally-renowned, two Michelin star restaurant The Square. In 2005 Scott represented his country at the most prestigious cooking competition in the world, the Bocuse D’or, achieving Australia’s best ever result at the time 14th globally. These credentials and such experience placed Scott, a chef with true edge and fervour, at The Point Restaurant Albert Park. Four years later and The Point Restaurant was awarded Two Hats by The Age Good Food Guide 2011 and 2012 and awarded Victoria’s Best Steakhouse 2010 by Restaurant and Catering Australia. The Point was also awarded National honours in 2008 and 2011 by RCA, for its continued commitment to serving some of the country’s finest beef.Scott is ‘the meat man’ and for more than five years was Executive Chef at the helm of one of Australia’s most credited steak restaurants, while also managing to offer an extensive modern European menu enabled by his classical French training. Scott and his team at The Point won noteworthy Australian titles, the Australian Culinary Challenge 2007 and Scott also defended his title at the Fonterra Food Services Culinary Challenge 2010 and won, which saw top chefs from around the country competing for significant cash prizes and national recognition. In 2011 after an extremely successful tenure at The Point, Scott decided to realise his dream and opened his first restaurant venture, The Estelle in Northcote. Having received a coveted Chef’s Hat in The Age Good Food Guide in only its first year, while also being nominated for ‘Best New Restaurant’ the Estelle is definitely a valued addition to Melbourne’s vibrant and eclectic food scene. Two years on the Estelle is popular with locals and destination diners and has retained its One Chef’s Hat at 2014 AGFG.Pickett has recently launched new venture, Saint Crispin at 300 Smith Street, Collingwood in partnership with chef Joe Grbac who also trained at The Square with Philip Howard. At the 2014 Age Good Food Guide Awards Saint Crispin was awarded One Hat and Best New Restaurant 2014, and now Saint Crispin has secured Two Chef’s Hats in the 2015 awards.Scott was also nominated for Chef Of The Year by The Age Good Food Guide 2015, and his head chef of Estelle, Josh Pelham secured Young Chef Of The Year 2015.

Leaving behind a new wife and a baby on the way, he soon finds himself in the trenches of Gallipoli. Four horrific years later, Stephen is the only survivor of his platoon, shell‐shocked and disillusioned, and during the heat of battle on the blood‐stained fields of France, he mysteriously disappears.
Stephen's ultimate fate is still a mystery when more than eighty years later his grandson Patrick finds a diary that leads him to Britain and France on a journey to discover what really happened... and finds the truth about his grandfather's fate is even stranger and more shocking than he imagined.

HIGHLY COMMENDED FOR THE 2014 FELLOWSHIP OF AUSTRALIAN WRITERS (FAW) BARBARA RAMSDEN AWARD
From Johnny Fawkner's party landing on the Yarra in 1835, Melbourne had 55 years of rarely interrupted prosperity. It had come so easily few believed it would end.
But it did end, just as financier, philanthropist and sportsman, Mark Moss was building his testament to his and the city's success. Norwood.
This is a story of that house, its history and its people. But it is also more than that. This is a history of the settlement of Victoria and the rich background to the early formation of Melbourne.
An explosion of advanced cultural and political developments followed on from a remarkable gold rush and its rebellion, to a city, with impressive boulevards, beautiful parks, palatial public and commercial buildings and opulent homes, like Norwood.
Weaving the history of Norwood and its people with the story of Melbourne this is a rare insight into some of the people and events that shaped the early settlement and the growth of Victoria.
In particular it follows the story of Mark Moss and his building of Norwood - often referred to as Moss' folly - at the height of the boom. By tracing the evolution of the city of Melbourne through property acquisition, speculation and development cycles through to the mid 1900's much is revealed. Including the influence of Norwood in the creation of the National Trust (Victoria).
Of Norwood's legacy Robin Boyd said: It changed (the) city's face.
Author Information
The author lived in Norwood as a young man from 1947 to 1955. His great uncle owned Norwood from 1917 to 1953. On investigating the house's history he has found many surprises about its colourful past, and its connections with 'Marvellous Melbourne' and has woven these into the fabric of the story.
