Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide commonly called "laughing gas" relieves pain and anxiety during dental cleaning. The only form of sedation where you may be able to drive yourself home after the procedure.

Recommended for anxious patients

Used at patient's request

Administration of pure Oxigen for 5 minutes after the use of N2O enables patients to return back to work and or drive right after treatment

Indications for Nitrous Oxide

Mildly apprehensive patient

The frightened child

To reduce awareness of time and fatigue

To reduce dental stress

To control gagging

When requested by the patient

Absolute contraindications to N2O

Nasal obstruction

Completely uncommunicative; either disability or language barrier

Increased intracranial pressure

As a substitute for local or general anesthesia

Patient refusal

Alcoholic or recovered alcoholic

Relative contraindications to N2O

Pulmonary disease

Respiratory infections

Pregnancy

Psychiatric patients

Immune compromised patient

Multiple sclerosis

Patient using marijuana or hallucinogenic drugs

Blocked middle ear

Very apprehensive patient

Repeated exposures less than one week apart
