WELCOME
JACQUE DRISCOLL!!!
UNT Library Intern - DHS Library
I was born at Holoman AFB,
New Mexico. My father was in the Air Force
and we moved quite often, living in San Anto-
nio, Germany, and Arkansas before I was 12
years old. I attended Calhoun MS, Denton High,
and UNT. I’m a musician, singing in my church
choir and playing French Horn. I was even the
drum major here my senior year! I taught
5th/6th English and reading for 6 years before
moving to England with my Air Force hus-
band. After living there for four years, we
moved back to the DFW area. I’m currently a
Masters student at UNT, getting my degree in
School Librarianship. We have a 3 ½ year old
son named Jack, and two cats, Lucy and Voltron.
You’ll see me in the library a couple days a
week, and I’m happy to help you with whatever
you need.

BOOK REVIEW!
Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blank-
man
Publisher: Balzer & Bray, imprint of HarperCollins
Copyright: 2014
Genre: Historical Fiction
Gretchen Muller is a teen in 1930s Nazi Germany and
an “honorary niece” of Adolf Hitler. She has grown
up believing that her father sacrificed his life to save
that of Uncle Dolf during Hitler’s unsuccessful at-
tempt to overthrow the German government in 1923.
When a young Jewish journalist reaches out to her
questioning the events of that day, Gretchen begins to
doubt all she’s ever known about her father’s death,
her “Uncle Dolf,” and her life as a German. Her hon-
or and loyalty is severely tested as her relationship
with the journalist grows in this chilling account of
those days in early 1930s Germany. The author deftly
weaves German history and Hitler’s rise to power (as
well as his psychopathic nature) into her debut novel
and hints of a possible sequel. The strong female
protagonist and love story will draw teen girls, and
the historical information will appeal to boys.
BOOK REVIEW!
The Shadow Hero by Gene Luen Yang Illustrated by Sonny Liew
Publisher: First Second
Copyright: 2014
Genre: Graphic novel
Author Yang takes a little known 1940s comic hero tale
and updates it in this exciting superhero story. Based on
The Green Turtle, by Chu Hing, the graphic story is about
Hank Chu, a Chinese American teen in the 1930s, who
becomes a hero in his neighborhood thanks to his mom
and a wish-granting turtle spirit. Hank only desires to live
a quiet life helping his father run his shop. However, his
mom has bigger aspirations for him and makes him a su-
perhero costume. Hank goes along with it for a while, but
doesn’t believe he has what it takes. When his father is
killed by thugs demanding protection money, Hank
changes his mind. He works on his physical prowess and
is inhabited by a Chinese turtle spirit who grants him one
wish – to never be killed by a bullet. Yang takes a good
story and makes it great with his fabulous storytelling. Any young adult who loves good action, great plot, sympathetic
characters, and a bit of mysticism will really like this tale.
