Building GreenBuildings are a main contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and at times can be unhealthy for their occupants. The United States Green Building Council® (USGBC) is a non-profit organization with the goal to address these issues and reform the built environment. As part of this goal, they developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design™ (LEED®) program to encourage healthier buildings and efficient resource use. Every project is required to meet minimum standards and receives a final certification level based on the additional improvements made. AMLI has committed to designing all new construction to achieve LEED Silver or higher so that we can provide truly outstanding homes for our residents.

IntroductionAMLI’s mission is to create an outstanding living environment. A key part of this mission and our excellence in customer service is sustainability. We use LEED and ENERGY STAR programs to support our sustainability efforts and prove performance; however, we also offer additional programs and features to help our resident live a low-impact lifestyle at all of our communities.

Operating EfficientlyThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR Program was created to help consumers save energy. In addition, to certifying energy-efficient appliances and technology, the EPA certifies buildings that are in the top 25% of energy-efficient buildings. Our ENERGY STAR certified communities reduce energy, save money, and help protect the environment by generating fewer greenhouse gas emissions than typical multifamily communities.

Healthy LivingThe Best Ways to Improve Air Quality are:1. Keep out sources of air pollution2. Remove pollutants from the home3. Bring in clean, fresh air to reduce the impact of any remaining pollution

Keeping Out Sources of Air Pollution – Prohibiting smoking is one of the best ways to keep air fresh since it

prevents exposure to second-hand smoke. – Building materials such as paints, sealants, and flooring often contain

harmful ingredients known as volatile organic compounds (or VOCs). Choosing low VOC products keeps this irritant our of your home and supports fresh air.

– Some cleaning products can bother people with asthma or allergies. Green Seal, EcoLogo and EPA Safer Choice certifications are only awarded to products that meet health and environmental standards and are proven to work effectively as cleaners.

– Pests such as termites, ants, and rodents can damage the building and create irritants in the air. Common pesticides can compound the problem. Preventing pests in the first place can be better for your home.

Removing Pollutants – Participles in the air can irritate health problems such as asthma when

inhaled. Regular cleaning allows you to capture and remove small particles. – These particles can additionally be removed by including an air filter or air

purifier in your home. – Pets are great additions to the family, but their dander and saliva can be

an irritant to those with allergies. Cleaning up after your pets helps ensure everyone at the community is comfortable in their home.

Fresh Air – Every community has a different system for allowing you to bring fresh air

into your home. This ventilation can reduce the impact of any remaining pollutants inside your home.

Sources of Bad Indoor Air QualityA) Bathroom – Showers, plumbing leaks, household cleaners, wastebaskets,

drinking cups, damp carpeting and flooring, bacteria and viruses

B) Bedroom – Poor ventilation, dust and dust mites, bacteria and viruses, pet dander, dry cleaning

C) Living Area – Tobacco smoke, furniture, pets, hobby supplies (such as varnishes and glues)

D) Kitchen – Cooking gas, appliances, household cleaning agents, garbage pails, plumbing leaks

Page 6: DENVER · 2020. 6. 19. · – Turn off lights, fans, and water fixtures when they are not in use. – Unplug appliances you do not use often and use power strips to make it easier

Healthy Living

How AMLI Supports Health – AMLI has prohibited smoking in the common areas and outdoor

spaces of all our communities to eliminate one of the most harmful sources of indoor air pollution. AMLI’s Breatheasy program additionally prohibits smoking inside apartment units at select communities.

– All of our communities allow you to bring fresh air into your apartment. If you are at a LEED community, click here to learn more about the specific fresh air features in your home.

– During construction of our LEED communities, we also often take measures such as sealing cracks and placing screens over openings to help prevent pests from getting into your home.

What Can You Do?– Choosing cleaning products that are Green Seal, Ecologo, or EPA

Safer Choice certified allows you to avoid more toxic cleaners and keep containments out of your home. Opening your windows when you are cleaning also helps keep the air fresh.

– Turning on your bathroom exhaust fan when you are showering helps remove humid air from your home.

– These indoor plants can help purify air and absorb odor.

– Keeping your home dry and tidy will discourage pests and create a healthier environment.

– Cleaning up after your pets helps keep the community clean and healthy. Additionally pets are only allowed off-lease in designated dog-run or dog park areas.

RecyclingWhy is Our Recycling Approach Changing? The recycling industry in undergoing massive change. Many facilitiesthroughout the country (and the globe) no longer purchase or accept recycling. To help the industry get back on track it is important we take action.

Reduce and ReuseYou’ve heard Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, but did you know that the words are listed in that order for a reason? As great as it is to recycle waste, it is far better to never create it in the first place. Since the recycling industry is struggling to process the sheer volume of waste being created, reducingour waste stream and reusing items is more important than ever.

Recycle RightOne of the main reasons the country’s recycling is not always acceptedis that it is mixed with too much trash. Common recycling contamination includes anything from plastic bags and paper towels to even items likedirty diapers. One of the most common causes of contamination is “wish-cycling.” Trash is placed in the recycling bin in the hopes it can be recycled. Unfortunately, this does more harm than good, so learn what your waste hauler accepts and “when in doubt, throw it out.”

Continue RecyclingThe value of recycling rises and falls based on how well we recycle. By encouraging the right recycling practices we can improve the value of recycling and help the industry get back on track.

Specialty RecyclingWant to do more? While items like plastic bags or hazardous waste likebatteries can never be accepted in single-stream recycling, there are still ways to make sure they are recycled. Earth 911’s database shares moreinformation and where to go to keep hazardous waste and specialty recycling items like snack wrappers, Styrofoam, and plastic bags out of the landfill.

Fresh Air Features

Ventilation systems vary between each AMLI building, but every community has a system for bringing in fresh air. In a typical apartment residential units include operable windows to allow fresh air into the home. Additionally an exhaust fan in the bathroom is designed to remove moisture and contaminants.

LEED Upgrade– Fresh air is brought directly into the building

without you having to open a window. You may hear this system running even if the air conditioning is off.

– This fresh air is also designed to pass through a MERV 8 air filter to remove irritants such as pollen.

– A kitchen fan exhausts air directly outdoors. This removes contaminants and odors from your home.

Energy Efficiency

Heating and Cooling EquipmentLEED-certified buildings are designed to be 20 to 30 percent more efficient than national standards. This can translate into lower energy use and lower cost for residents.

Building ConstructionLEED focuses on improving the whole building performance in various ways. A few examples include:

– Upgraded insulation

– Energy-efficient windows

– Air sealing units to prevent air loss

Other Benefits of Energy Efficiency– Energy-efficient equipment is typically

higher quality and more reliable.

– When the building shell is well-sealed to air leaks, the temperature of the home will be more consistent and comfortable.

– Natural light can improve mood and productivity while also decreasing the need for energy use.

– Energy-efficient motors are often more quiet, reliable and controllable than their less efficient counterparts.

– Home insulation and high-efficiency windows not only keep the internal temperature comfortable, but also shield the home from outside noise.

– Energy efficiency reduces negative impacts on the environment.
